Sometimes when the brakes are really wet. As in for one example a steady highway cruise, having not touched the brakes in a while (so they're about as wet as they'll get), and then coming to a stop sign at the end of an off-ramp.
Rotors are "OEM slotted" from ECS, pads are Porterfield R4-S. This at both ends of the car. I'd think the slots would in fact work for the situation. But again, I can't remember having this elsewhere..
I have a 1997 F150, 4X4. My mechanic says its time for new brakes and was curious if it would be worth possibly converting from drum brakes to disc brakes??
My mechanic has quoted me $300 to do the rear brakes, would it be worth the extra money to convert??? I really don't care for drum brakes. I have done a search on the internet and every time it brings up the issue with the parking brake.
Well I've had it with the low mph squealing of my brakes. I'm currently running the brembo 2bk 4 piston set up. I'm assuming it has race pads since it only squeals at low speeds. The pads are still good btw.
I do not track the car so I was thinking something in the middle pad wise. I was looking at the hawk hps street pads(they seem great with no noise) or the stoptech brake pads(pretty much the same as the hawks). They both will fit my brake setup.
Alright so my brakes squeak a lotttt and its really annoying and embarrassing. They feel fine stopping power wise, i dont get vibrations and the car doesnt pull to either side, I looked at my pads and it looks like i have a 1/4in left on them which im pretty sure is good. I really want this to go away... do we have electronic sensors telling us we need new pads? Untill then ill be partially using my hand brake to reduce the embarrassment.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2013 2.5L Golf (Highline from Canada) that every morning when I go to work and every afternoon when I leave work, the brakes squeak for the first 2 to 3 stops.
It doesn't seem weather dependent, just cold dependent (now that it is cold in Canada).
Is this normal for a set of stock Golf pads? I am pretty sure its coming from the rears.
Out of all the cars I have owned (1973 BMW E3 Bavaria, 88 E28 535is, 01 E39 540i), none have ever made this much noise in the morning, no matter what the conditions were like.
If this is normal for stock pads, I will probably put a set of aftermarket ones.
Today i took my wheels off and installed the anti rattle caliper clips. They were missing and my brakes were making a ton of noise so my tech recommended it. I have them installed properly from the instruction i was given, and all the sudden my brakes hardly work, and the pedal goes to the floor. Im not leaking brake fluid anywhere, and everything is hooked up and fastened properly.

View 2 RepliesNow that cold weather is upon us in the Chicagoland area, I'm reminded of how irritating the brake squeal is on my car. While it's true it goes away as the brakes warm up, my drive to and from work is only ~15 minutes so the majority of my driving during the winter months is afflicted by the high pitched squeal.
I have a 2012 R with an OEM brake setup and the pads are close to being due for replacement. Need to getting rid brake squeal with any combo of rotors/pads/anti-squeal paste etc. I've searched this and other forums for an answer and all I've been able to find can be summed up as "that's what high performance VW brakes do, get used to it."
My R is a DD and doesn't get tracked so I don't need track caliper brakes. Basically I'm willing to trade performance in my quest to find a quiet brake setup.

40K miles on it, and the rear brakes are squeaking.
I have some new rotors and pads picked out, but i dont know if i have the Bosch or the Girling rear calipers...
My brakes will not stop squealing and it is driving me nuts. I have the stock pads / rotors with 12k miles and three track days. To try and get ride of the noise I have:
- pulled wheels and cleaned all dust from wheels and calipers
- I have the TyrolSport caliper stiffening kit and pulled and greased front bolts
- re-bed in the pads and rotors
- when I had the wheels off and working on caliper bolts the pads looked like there was plenty of material left
I know people have complained about stock setup making noise in cold weather, but that cannot be the case here. It lonely happens at low speeds. What am I missing to get rid of the noise?
So I'm at the dealership because my brakes have been squeaking at low speeds for the last two months. They measured the rotor thickness and checked the pads and calipers. Their response is that this is a common problem in Texas humidity with the type of brake pads that are used. Apparently almost everyone is dealing with this.
New pads or to shave my rotors are not covered under warranty.
I replaced my rear pads on Sunday and the car drives and brakes great. This morning I noticed when I backed into my parking spot at work that the brakes were engaging to the point where I was on a small incline and the car didn't roll at all when I let off the brake pedal.
This was my first time doing the rear pads on my MKVI and my first time doing brakes on a VW. Is there some extra step required that I'm missing? I know the piston was a PITA, definitely not used to having to turn a piston while compressing.
Yesterday I had my front end jacked up to adjust my coil-over's via spanner wrenches. After I had everything back on I lowered the car down and torqued the lug nuts. I got in to perform a test drive and maybe my parking brake was stuck, or my brakes were dragging. When I put it in reverse (Manual transmission) something was fighting me from moving. I applied the parking brake and then released it again. No luck, so I gave it some rev's and the car moved.
Now when going on sharper turns I hear a odd rubbing noise. It isn't from the wheels or tires. Today I checked my fender liners, because that is what it sounds like, they are ok. I though maybe somehow they were mis-aligned and it was causing the car the tire to rub. I sounds like it is coming from the right side. The car only has 500 miles on it and this problem started exactly after I lowered it down and the parking brake or a caliper was stuck.
I bought new brakes for the R, Hawks HPS pads with ECS tuning 2 peice rotors.
Me and a friend installed them in June. I went threw the break in procedure written on the box that came with the pads. The brakes work fantastic, they stop the car so much better than stock but the problem I have now is that loud squeak when braking normally. If I do a hard braking no squeak but I can't do that all the time, my passengers are going to hate me hehe. The squeak sounds almost like metal on metal grinding. When I inspect the rotors everything looks fine.
When installing them I used the paste that came with the pads and installed the metal backing that came with them too. I can't seem to figure out what I did wrong. Haven't really had time to take everything apart again either but I think I might do that this weekend but before I do that is there anything I should have on hand?
What would cause this? The brakes work fine until you get into that range of brake pressure in which the abs wants to kick in. The brakes then lock up(may be only front driver), the pedal sinks to the floor, and don't disengage until the car is at a complete stop. It does this with esp on or off.
The previous owner changed a front wheel sensor and bled the brakes. The abs module fuse under the battery cover was melted but not blown.
VCDS shows no codes. I did not do output test on pump, didn't have my laptop with me.

I bought this car 2 weeks ago and the previous owner failed to let me know about the problem and it happened to me a mile down the road after purchasing the car. I started to notice a lot more because of the rain and snow recently. It's definitely an uneasy feeling. I really don't wanna drive the car till it's sorted.
So since I bought the car several months ago, I have been noticing something about the braking. Every time I get in the car the brakes are ROCK hard until I start the car, this seems abnormal to me, I never experienced this. That is not the only problem, when I am driving down the road and go to apply the brakes there is a hesitation which causes me to press harder and then the brake kind of slam on. I know its under warranty but I hate taking my car to the dealership so I'd like to know first that its a legitimate problem before I take it to VW. I know about the Hill assist, this isnt part of the issue.
View 24 RepliesI've had this problem a couple times now. I start the car in the garage, take the parking brake off and try to move forward. Car does not move, but inches forward like I still have had the parking brake on. I double check, it's off. And to state the obvious, I do not have my foot on the brake.
I think maybe it's hill assist, though my garage barely has an incline that probably wouldn't trigger hill assist. I try to put it in different gears and attempt to accelerate in reverse, same thing.
So, that leads me to believe, are my brakes stuck? I steadily accelerate and the car finally budges. I hear a loud "POP-TWANG!!" under the car like I just popped the parking brake. The car lurches forward and I drive out of the garage normally.
I don't hear or see any other performance issues after this under normal city driving. This was after the car was not used and was in the garage overnight or longer. I did drive a few hundred miles the day before but not under significant load or stress on the car.
My AM radio has terrible reception. There is humming noise that goes away when I apply the brakes. I will bring it to the dealer, but I know what they will say, "cannot duplicate problem" or "radio operation found to be normal".
View 14 RepliesTrying to figure out the best option to remedy some braking issues. One is the squishy pedal feel. It does not happen all the time, but sometimes I will notice that the pedal is "sagging" for lack of a better term, and when I let up on the pedal and press again, the point of action/effect seems to be much higher.
As for the pads, I'm also curious if new ones will work with the grab I've been feeling after leaving the car outside for a few days. I have completely stopped using my e-brake because if it rains or is wet to begin with, the pads seem to stick (I believe) to the rotors and I have to practically to a low rpm launch to get them unstuck. Then I hear a sort of bumpy feel like there is pad material stuck to the rotors. It usually fades after some highway driving and decent braking. I could have sworn it happened the other day with NO e-brake engaged though, so I really don't know what is going on.
Can the 2008 R's brakes fit under the factory steelies? What's the smallest wheel that can fit on an .: R?

It seems that every time I hit the brakes and come to a complete stop my brakes scream with this annoying squeaky sound ... My car has a little over 800 miles haven't driven hard, or dogged the car just been taking it nice and smooth for a proper break in.
