Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Wires Torn And Hanging From The Underside
Aug 17, 2016
After a bit of a crunch to the underside, i've noticed some circular metal covering broke back and some wires are torn and exposed just behind the front passenger wheel on the bottom.

So I bought this truck a year ago and the guy had his fog lights re wired to another switch under the dash and had a brake controller wired in (that's what I think it's called) the fog lights worked for a month then just stopped working there's a rats nest of wires under the hood for the fog lights too. The brake controller never worked.
My main question is what are the wires that are hanging down under my dash that look like someone snipped ....there's a random green wire attached to one and just hanging

I was driving home and suddenly the underside of my car *popped* and it sounded like my muffler came loose. Very loud exhaust/turbo whistle.
Luckily I was very close to home and was able to pull in when it completely fell off and started dragging on the street. What part of my exhaust is this and what should I do to repair it?
I just finished fixing a ton of stuff on her and now she does this ?

My 99 Jetta is rattling. The noise comes from the front center of the underside of the car. It started out only when I was accelerating and would disappear when in neutral or after reaching 40mph. Now its when its idling and driving at any speeds under 40mph (I think it just gets drowned out above that speed). I looked under the car and saw that there might be a piece causing the noise but I can't figure out what it is. It seems to be in-line with the exhaust system and its a metal, cylinder looking piece that has uniform holes in it. I'm just trying to figure out what is causing the noise, if I can fix it easily or if this is going to be a pretty expensive fix. (It has 165k miles on it, is a 2.1 gas engine with the new body type).

I'm upgrading my head lights and added a euro switch. I need to splice into some wires. I want it to look clean and waterproof. I'm looking into t taps or a quick splicing terminals that go directly over the wire when closed it splices into wire leaving male end to hook the new wire up too.

Some how my aux water pump wires got ripped out and I'm not sure if they shorted out. I pig tailed the wires on the pump and ran the car up to temp and turned car off and pump was not running. If the wires did or can short out what would I look for to replace (ie fuse, relay). Also I'm not sure which wire goes to what pin as the plug got ripped off. Wires are black red, and brown black.

2001 MK4 GTI VR6 put brand new coil pack, wires and plugs in the car because it was misfiring. Was fine for about a week than I got a clogged cat code and could feel the affects. I now have no cat, no resonator, and no muffler. The car is finally driving good and then the check engine light came back. It says only a misfire in Cylinder #3 and when accelerate hard to speed up my check engine light starts to blink until I stop accelerating hard. So my guess is the clogged cat caused that cylinder to misfire but I do not know the actual solution to this. My EVAP hose is semi-pinched and when u squeeze it you can almost kill the engine. The weirdest thing of all is this: driving normal I shift in between 2000 and 3000 RPM and once i get into 4th gear about 2000 RPM......my car starts shaking badly and i feel like my engine is going to fall out. I have searched and the only thing i can think of is a bad injector...

Had the "G" in the driveway and noticed a very small wet spot (definitely oil) on the garage floor today. Looked underneath and can see a wet spot (not very wet) on the underside the engine, but without a lift... can't get a good look to see the exact source of the leak.
With that said --- it's headed to the shop Monday morning. Oil level is good... so it's not a huge leak by any means.

I drive my golf maybe 180-250Km everyday, and there are countless areas where something could occur but for about a month now I am hearing a strange sound coming from where I suppose the suspension would be, (I don't know for sure because I am in the car when I hear it) but its happening when i go over speed bumps, even going less than 10kph.... and when ever i hit a crappy road with a lot of potholes and bumps. it sounds like a scraping noise of like maybe the shock absorber or something along those lines. I would go to VW but the dealer in my area likes to void warranties, and is very difficult in giving away things for free/cheap. it getting consistently louder and is starting to worry me. should i be worried or is it a simple fix?

The underside coating is peeled off where the vehicle lifter makes contact. Is this normal or does this indicate the dealer lifted the vehicle incorrectly?
I went only to dear so far. It was done by the dealer. The bright metal is exposed. I did not notice rust yet.
I happened to notice the peel off while I was installing mud flaps myself.

My '10 Golf TDI started leaking gasoline this morning, found smallish puddle in the garage. Looked underneath and there was definitely fuel on the underside of the tank. Moved the car into the driveway so the leaking fuel can evaporate.
Not sure what happened. I did hit something on the highway yesterday, a piece of tire from a semi went underneath the car. Of course it's been really hot 100+ deg lately. Maybe a fitting has come loose?
I'm not going to risk driving it, but can't do anything about it until monday. I'll call the shop and see what they recommend, tow or drive.

Whilst driving on the motorway at the weekend I noticed a very load high pitched noise which seemed to be coming from the rear/centre underside of the car. It lasted for about 30 seconds and then went. It has happened before about two months ago and after the first instance I had the haldex and rear diff oil changed. On both occasions it has been very wet on roads with torrentian rain.

So, I have discovered my first rattle in my GTI (8500 miles). Seems to be from the underside, sounds like a heat shield rattling, certainly sounds metallic. Did some spirited driving yesterday and hear the rattle today. Any target areas to check when I take a look under it?

After driving in heavy snow I noticed a cable hanging loose in a loop under the car in the mid section. What could this be ?

My friend and I both have the MK4 R32. He had a bunch of stuff replaced in the engine. (a bunch of plastic parts that are super expense, the timing chain, something related to the guide, basically the plastics that holds the engine cushion/absorb) Anyways, his engine sounds great and quiet at the same time with a little high pitch noise when the RPM is hanging in between 1K and 2K.
Our cars were in the garage and I did the same thing and it sounded NOT quiet, a lot more noise than his. There was an obvious difference in noise coming from the engine with the hood open. I do have cams and a light weight pulley. Can that have an affect on the engine noise? If I am not making sense, then i should probably video record the sound or take it to the dealership for a check up. Also, I am at 93K.

A month ago, when I got into my car I saw that my rear view mirror was hanging freely with the tension of the rain sensor cables. My windshield was changed last winter. The thing is insurance company didn't change it with the original factory version. So I think they removed the rain sensor from the old one and tried to stick it to the new one. And the whether was so hot at that time so the glue just came off. The only part of the mirror that didn't came off was a black sticker kind of thing with a hole for the rain sensor in the middle of it. Then I tried to stick it back using super glue. Well it worked for a month but yesterday my mirror fell of again. So I cleaned the residue of the super glue from windshield using acetone and left it like that.
I'm thinking of taking the car to service now. Oh and btw the rain sensor part is a bit bumpy right now. I mean it doesn't stay in a fixed position. It stays a little bit in front of the hole it should stay in so gluing the mirror back is possible only if I apply the glue to the rain sensor.

So i have an exhaust leak that melted the wires on o2 sensor bank 1 sensor one. This put o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 into lean mode and i found this out last week. Made the appointment. Was gonna run some test and replace the o2s if needed. But this morning i go to leave for work and my coolant light comes on 50 feet up the road. I pull over look at my coolant. There was about an inch of coolant left in the tank. Roll back down the street turn the car off and leave it. Im thinking i blew my head gasket running lean. When i get back from work the coolants in the same spot so i jack the car up to see if i can find the coolant leak and i dont see anything. Drop the car back down and the coolant levels back to normal so im alittle lost on whats going on here.
Also after work before coolant level returned to normal i reved it up it blew a little white smoke then black. Nothing really dark. It was quite faint. And also the coolant in the tank would bubble from the back under rev when it was low. Nothing at idle. When coolant level returned. I didn't see any smoke at all and i was unable to check coolant.

has run the 4th wires from the taillight plugs to the control module. Which route did you take from the rear to the front of the car? I assume you took both down the driver's side.

So I got my new GTI yesterday. There were 3 problems with this car that are going to be easy fixes but don't breathe an air of confidence in the assembly of this car. I don't have pics of everything due to Christmas madness but here are the three things I've found wrong with the car so far.
1) right daytime running headlight doesn't work.
2) there is no mirror light drivers side. Only a hole.
3) there are exposed wires on the front collision sensor.
Like I said these are simple fixes but disappointing on a brand new car.

My 2006 GX was purchased with a torn second row, middle shoulder belt. The replacement belt just came in the mail today. I plan to tear into it this weekend, but before I do I was just wondering if any of you have any words of wisdom? It's kind of a weird, isolated problem, but you never know.

I just bought a 2005 GX470 with 107k miles. Very happy with my purchase. The truck is in great condition, very well maintained, super clean, with lots of service records. Previous original owner did not skip any of the recommended items when it came to service, including T-belt, water pump, etc.
However, while inspecting the SUV today, i found one problem. On the driver side, the inner CV boot is torn and it is spraying some gray looking grease around. The passenger side, looks fine.
My question is... how hard is to replace the torn CV boot on these trucks? Do i need any special tools? Should i just replace the boot(s) or do the whole CV axle?
I've replaced CV boots on Nissan Maxima and old Audi in the past and it was a doable but time consuming task. Both times, i wished i replaced the entire axle vs dealing with fixing individual CV boots.
