It's come to my attention that I have a thumping sound coming from my lower front end. It only happens on low rpm's and I can hear it best when it's in neutral, if I give the brakes a little push I can hear it louder, more profound, and can also feel it on my feet a little, but I don't only hear it while I have the pedal depressed. So..what it could be?
View 1 RepliesIn the last few days I have been hearing like a thumping sound coming from the front of my car. It is happening when i going through a turn with some bumps, slightly aggressive, but not crazy. Haven't been in the canyon since it started so I am not sure how it will react pushing the car to about 7/10. Which is about as close to the limit as I will get off track. The sound has come at about say 4/10. just off ramps and stuff. It sounds very similar to a car with very tight coilovers. Could it be the XDS working? It isn't a clicking like a traditional diff, and I don't expect that it is. But obviously I don't have a lot of driving experience with an electronic diff like the XDS. I will take the car to VW as soon as i have time.
View 2 RepliesWhen being driven my '66 Stang makes a clunking sound in the front end which seems to be coming from the front toward the passenger side.
I've had the car in to my mechanic twice in the last 30 days for this issue. He took the wheels off, repacked the brakes on one side, but hasn't found the problem. During the test drives the car did not reproduce the noise.
Lately, I've noticed that when I really hear the clunking noise is after I've made a sharp turn, like when driving slowly in a parking lot, and have returned the steering to a straight position. We didn't make any sharp turns during the test drives.
I just picked up my car after having a shop install ball joints, tie rod ends, and end links and there is a thumping sound coming from I'm guessing the right front tire that is consistent with speed. I had an alignment done today as well. Is it possible that my newish tires are already worn unevenly and the alignment is showing that now?
Either that or the wheel is not seated completely. I'll call the guy back tomorrow when they open and let him know what I hear.
Only reason I didn't so it myself is because its cold out now and he did everything including alignment.
I have a 2005 jetta 2.0l sedan manual transmission. I recently replaced the front shocks/struts and coil springs. I so replaced the passenger side tie rod end and the passenger side drive shaft or cv axle (not sure what its called). Everything went fine or so I thought. There is a metallic whirring sound coming from the front end and idk how to fix it. I don't even know whats wrong. I went over everything multiple times visually and could find nothing wrong. I tried three different cv axles thinking that was the cause for it and the noise remains. The first two were brand new from autozone and the last one which is still on the car is a good used oem cv axle. I took two videos of the noise....

About a year ago I had a shop replace the strut bearings while it was in for some other things. After I picked it up my alignment was jacked and there was a binding sound coming from the front end. The shop said the sound was just the springs settling in. It did go away after a while. Still don't understand why the alignment was off but I aligned it myself and all was good for a while.
About two weeks ago I myself replaced:
Lower control arms (stock VW) and ball joints (FEQ or Lemforder, not sure which) with R32 rear bushings and poly front (I HATE poly bushings but that's for another time)
Tie rod ends (FEQ)
Front brakes & rotors (stock VW)
I also threw in a oem Audi lower stress brace while I was under there but I don't think that has anything to do with my problem. Then I took it to a shop to have an alignment done on it. Everything is now within spec except that the caster is 6.6 degrees on the left front and 6.2 degrees on the right front. How does this happen?
So now my problem: There is a fairly loud binding sound coming from the front of the car randomly. It sounds like the coil spring is binding but maybe it is something else? it mostly does it when I reverse for a bit and then put it in first and drive forward or forward then reverse so something is shifting front to back. Steering doesn't really seem to have any noticeable effect.
I have a really small leak coming from the lower end of my power steering hose, it's super small, I was wondering if I could fix this by wiping it down really well and dry, and then layering it with plasti-dip. I think the leak is small/slow enough for me to get in a few good layers. Would this be an okay fix, or would the plasti-dip separate fast?
View 2 RepliesA months or so ago, after turning off my car I noticed a loud buzzing noise coming from the drivers-side lower firewall area. I cranked the car up and the buzzing stopped immediately. The problem began as intermittent but now within 2 minutes of turning my car the buzzing noise always starts, and runs my battery dead! I have taken my car to 2 local shops that have good reputations and they both began guessing and throwing parts at the problem to no avail my last resort is a dealership but it is 100 miles away and I'm not sure if they would do any better. I feel like this is something simple that an expert should have no problem diagnosing.
I have been searching around the internet and never seem to find someone with the exact same problem - until today!

Our 2009 Santa Fe has a knocking sound coming from the undercarriage of the vehicle. It cannot be heard when parked or when coasting. If I gently depress the gas pedal enough to rev the engine to 1500-2000 rpm when traveling at speeds of 35mph or greater it can be heard. The rate of the knocking / thumping appears to be related to vehicle speed, i.e., the faster we move, the higher the knocking rate.
Yesterday I emptied the vehicle of all contents and was still able to produce the sound upon demand.
When I drive over 55 i have a shaking through the car after driving for a while if you put it in reverse it feels like it is binding up and when you put it in park you can hear a thumping sound coming from the drive train i have replaced both cv shafts in the front (they were bad) and the passenger side hub. I am going to replace the ball joints with after market ones because it pulls to the right and the stock ones do not have a camfer adjustment is the binding a differential problem or a transfer case problem also if while the engine is off if you shift to neutral you can feel it release the tension on the drive train.

I didn't notice it when I test drove it but now I'm hearing a knocking/thumping sound from the front end that goes to the speed of the wheels at slow speeds (10-30mph). I can also feel it pulse when I use the brakes at slow speeds. What this might be?
View 3 RepliesI replaced my struts and shocks a few weeks ago and i installed lowering springs H&R. Yesterday i started hearing this knocking thumping noise coming from the right front of the car me and my uncle took the wheel off today and looked around and everything was nice and tight we proceed to both push down on the right corner of the car to have it bounce up and down and we heard the same knocking sound coming from the right front area it sounds almost as if the strut blew out in the front right would the symptoms i described concur with the front strut being blown out, and on a side note the struts are only a few weeks old is this even possible since the struts are so new? I do have 20" rims on the car with low profile tires could i have hit a pothole hard enough to cause the strut to blow out? Iam planning on taking a trip to the dealer tomorrow and have them check it out.

View 2 RepliesMy friend has a 2005 Subaru Impreza RS (2.5 L) that just (today) started making what amounts to a clicking or thumping sound once the car reaches about 30 mph. I'm sure it does it at slower speeds, but I was unable to hear it. It is definitely in the front end. And seems to be coming from the drivers side. I asked if she had hit any large potholes recently, and the answer was no. Around three weeks ago she had studded snow tired mounted on the car. I don't think the tires are the issue. But perhaps the installation process may have played a part since the care was placed on a lift.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2005 Camry XLE. Since past few months I have started hearing a strange grinding / thumping noise from the front passenger side wheel. It can be clearly heard at slow speed and almost sounds like the wheel is lopsided and is rubbing against something. As the car picks up speed, the frequency picks up and the sounds disappears eventually.
So, I figured it must have been because the car had hit a curb few months ago and must have bent the rim. I had the wheels looked at while getting rotation and balancing done and was told that there is no rim damage. The sound went down a little after rotating the wheels but is still there. The mechanic doesn't think that it is the bearing because the sound disappears after moderate speeds. So, trying to figure out what could be causing the noise?
Looking for a diagram that breaks down the front axle components of a 1997 mercury mountaineer? I believe my drivers side ball joint is shot because it makes a thumping sound whenever it goes down the road and the wheel has a lot of play in it.
View 2 RepliesWhen driving I hear, not feel, a slight thumping noise that if I had to guess would say is coming from the passenger side front. When I let off the gas the noise becmes more prominent and you can feel the thumping. Also when I apply the brakes heavily the sound/feel goes back to the same as if I was driving. I'm thinking CV joint/axles or spindle bearings, but I cant understand why the condition is at it's worst when I'm coasting. Has this "noise while coasting" problem.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2003 Explorer 4.0l 4x4 auto. Yesterday day the passenger rear tire got a flat, so I put the full size spare on, and went about my business. About 2 miles up the road is a stop sign, so I start slowing down, and while slowing down I can hear a whining thumping sound from the front of the vehicle. It wasn't doing this before the flat, but right after I put the spare on it starts to do this. It only happens when slowing down, not under acceleration.

I've taken off the serpentine belt and spun all the pulleys. I can't figure it out, I'm thinking maybe timing chain but I'm not sure.
