So I drove my car (2000 vw golf tdi auto) to work fine. When I started it to drive home, it squealed and then all of a sudden stopped squealing so I popped my hood and looked and the belt can fit 2 fingers under it. Is there anything I can check diagnose this? I hear it could b a tensioner pulley.

Belt squeal but when I have clutch pushed in no noticeable noise.Abs kicks in at low speed stops. I sprayed the belts with dressing noise went away momentarily actually sounded like it could have killed it almost. Right now I have the and fuse pulled to just get me by.
I have a mkiv and before I got to work in the morning, I warm up my car for about 10 min. When I start it up the belt squeals. I do believe that it only does it in the morning. Should I have it checked out? i put belt dressing on it last night but it squealed when i started it up this morning so I don't think that worked......
View 10 RepliesI have a 2014 2.0T and have noticed that my car is making a noise that sounds like a belt squealing. I thought the sound was being produced by the brakes. I only notice when I drive the car from a cold start.
View 1 RepliesI have an 05 Jetta Wagon GLS 2.0 which has been amazingly resilient. I had the 100k check up done recently and everything still came up positive; the battery conked out at 120k; and I just recently replaced the stock head and tail lights out of proactiveness rather than them going out. But, I think I've run into an issue now. When I drive through a puddle (or otherwise get water significantly on the underside of the car) if I am running the AC at the same time the engine makes a squealing noise as though a belt is slipping due to the water. I presume is the case that a belt is slipping--and I imagine that is part of the reason it idles noisier than when it was new, but before my wife and I make a budget I'd see whether there are other options. As it is there are 130k miles on the car, it's a 5spd standard, and other than oil changes and the checks at 30, 60, and then 100k no real service has been done.

Driving on the highway and thought I heard a belt squeal. Looked at temp gauge, overheating in the red. Stopped car. Antifreeze on passenger side sprayed around, hard to tell from where.
Waiting a while, put a good amount of water in it as there seemed to be no anti-freeze left. Drove a bit more and it started going up on temp gauge. Pulled off highway on an exit, temp gauge went back down before I could pull over.
So I continued on the highway. The temp gauge would go back up to 3/4, then I'd put it in neutral to cost to a better place to stop, and the gauge would go back to halfway.. continued this for several miles to get home. Never overheated again, but kept getting "hot"(3/4) and dropping back down to normal (1/2)...
So I have a 2002 GTI VR6 with the 24v BDF Engine. I have been having a problem with my belt squealing. It started after I replaced my water pump and crack pipe. While I was at it I replaced the belt tensioner and belt with a kit from ECS than had an aftermarket tensioner and a Conti drive belt(has 6 ribs). When starting the car up for the first time after doing the water pump I noticed the belt was squealing. It would only squeal when I gave it some good throttle.
After a few minutes it stopped squealing so I figured it was some coolant or something on the belt. Well its been a few weeks and it continues to squeal when I give it throttle, but only if the ac is on and it will only do it for a few minutes. After a few minutes of the car running or driving down the road it doesn't squeal anymore. I did make a long drive in the rain very shortly after replacing the belt and it was a really heavy rain storm. There was a lot of water on the road and my belt was squealing pretty much the whole drive if I had the ac on. I had to alternate ac on and off so I could keep the windows defogged.
After that experience I put on a set of engine splash guards from ECS. (note these guards were the ECS branded ones and were a terrible fit. Holes didn't line up with studs on bottom of frame and ended up taking the middle belly pan section out as it would hang down way too low even with the side covers connected to it.) That seemed to keep it from squealing while driving in the rain but it still squeals after first starting the cold engine with ac on.
My daughter has a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero with 120,000 miles on it. She tells me it is making a squealing sound which I suspect is a loose serpentine belt. But I'm 18 hours away and can't diagnose it for her.

About a year ago I started hearing a very faint squeal that would always squeal, regardless of A/C use, no power loss is felt, in fact, the A/C works great and the car runs perfectly. But after a year of driving and 1 big road trip, the sound is now unbearable.
I recently replaced the alternator, belt tensioner, and threw on a new belt, but still, the squeal persists. After holding a rubber hose to my ear and moving through each accessory pulley with the other end of the hose, like a ghetto stethoscope, I know that it is definitely coming from the A/C compressor pulley.

Since the A/C compressor has a clutch, and the outer pulley is constantly spinning with the serpentine and there is no noticeable difference in the noise whether I am using the A/C or not, I think that the outer bearings on that clutch need to be replaced.
Should I just replace the whole clutch and any good DIY threads on this? I've looked but all I can find is a DIY for a TDI, which I don't know if it's the same compressor or not.
My 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T just started doing this... I am not hearing the normal Turbo whistling noise when I give it a lot of gas, however I now hear a squealing noise. Sounds similar to a loose belt kinda whining/squealing. I do not hear this at any other time, only when accelerating quickly.

Luckily I was very close to home and was able to pull in when it completely fell off and started dragging on the street. What part of my exhaust is this and what should I do to repair it?

when I bought my 2003 gti 1.8t it had a small exhaust leak, I decided to investigate today and found that the downpipe flange and turbo flange was rattling around, there's almost 1/16" of play and it's making a rattling noise. I can't tighten the nuts on the studs any more but that might just be from them being seized in place. I'm getting a new gasket and studs and nuts and hopefully that will fix it?
View 3 RepliesMy daughters 96 cav has a bad squeal coming from serpintine belt. I tried belt dressing and it threw the belt. I didn't notice any cracks/dry rotting on belt. I put the belt back on but it is still squealing.
View 1 RepliesA noise has been coming from my Serp belt for awhile. My serpentine belt doesn't have any wear. At least It doesn't look like it. Will this noise go away by replacing it? or is it something else? Is it the tensioner? I've noticed when car warms up the noise goes away. I do not know the last time it was replaced.

Car - 2001 Jetta TDI with 230k miles.
There has been a noise coming from the serpentine belt area for some times now, and I thought when I get to work on the belt I will get it fixed.
Last night, I replaced the alternator with a brand new one from idpart with a clutch pulley (the original pulley was plastic). I also replaced the tensioner and serpentine belt with this kit from ECS: [URL] .....
Everything was put back tight and nicely. Turned on the engine: the noise is still there.
For sure there is one pulley on its way out, but with one?

It's a 2.0 AVH Jetta.
The part that appears in the pic I have attached to this post has been making a lot of noise lately - ping, bang, knock etc... but the car has driven fine for a few months like that. but today it seized up causing the belt to smoke and make a squealing noise - I was stuck in a parking lot so I just cut the belt off and drove home - now the car runs great - it no longer makes noise and I was watching the gauges and seems like no difference at all during my 5 mile trip home.
So my question to you car pros is - how important is that part? I'm low income in a ghetto apartment so money is tight and getting money for car repairs is hard right now - I assume that part is an oil pump and don't oil pumps just circulate oil just to clean it through the filter or is there something I am missing? Can I safely run the car without that part?
Actually above + an interesting mystery.. Late last spring I began hearing a noise of constant pitch (sounding like someone sanding wood) when the engine was cold---Louder when it was colder/cooler. As the engine warmed up the noise went away. Throughout the summer,No Noise. n. Late summer broken water pump replaced along with hoses/belts. No noise until, temps in AM in the 40's.
Now that same damn noise is back.Only LOUDER! Same pattern>>as engine warms noise softens and goes away. My ear suggests noise is coming from the tensioner pulley (But, I've been fooled before)As to the question above, Do I tighten the belt on 'This vehicle' using the tensioner pulley or do I have to use the "Pry the Alternator forward" method.? One last thing, while the noise is occurring it does get louder with acceleration but is soon blocked out by normal engine noise.
I hear a loud screeching noise (like a loose belt) when the 2009 Corolla starts cold. It disappears and when the car gets a little warmer, it's gone. I had the belt replaced, made no difference. Car runs fine, otherwise.

Problem : I have a strange grinding noise coming from the front of the car. I can only hear it if all the windows are shut. The noise starts when the car starts moving, Doesn't matter if its in neutral or not, clutch pressed or depressed. The noise is there even if I switch off the engine whilst the car is still moving. It goes away when the car stops.
Yesterday I noticed that if I move the gear stick from left to right OR right to left in the neutral position (while the car is still moving), the noise increases!! What could be the potential problem? is it related to transmission? brakes? or wheel bearings?
2 days ago I changed my driver side wheel bearing and put in a new cv shaft
The axle nut may have been somewhat over torqued but nothing crazy over the spec.
Everything else is as per spec.
My problem is that every time I turn left slow fast sharp not sharp it's making this good awful noise.
It is not a constant squealing. It's every rotation. On off on off on off. No bearing humming or anything when driving straight or turning right. Just left. I'm pretty good at solving pretty well anything with my gti but this one has me stumped
