I want to clean up my bay a little bit. How and where can I relocate the power steering reservoir?

View 15 RepliesI have an '01 GTI VR6 and I was driving a couple weeks ago when my coolant light came on. I popped the hood and the reservoir was basically empty. I filled it up with 50/50 g12 and water but it was all gone in about a week. I put water in the car and ran it to see where coolant was leaking from and the only thing I noticed was some brownish colored water dripping off that black ball near the oil pan(I'm guessing it was dripping onto it and not from it). What can I do to find out for sure what's causing the leak and what needs to be replaced? One person told me that my water pump and radiator could be rusted.
View 4 RepliesI lost a hose in the driver side front wheel well this morning while pulling RV to a campground. By the time I got there and got the RV disconnected, I lost all power steering. I reconnected the hose using a zip tie and have a friend bringing me fluid to refill reservoir.
Is my pump toast now? Can I refill the reservoir and prime the lines and be good to go?
So it was like -10 here today, and I've had a coolant leak which could be the crack pipe? It's coming from the center of the motor and covering the oil filter housing. Anyway I've been adding distilled water until I could get coolant. So today I went out and the coolant reservoir was slushy ice. So I open the drain and drained a bunch out then added some coolant while it was draining to work along with running the engine a short time with the drain open and that got it flowing out. So I drained just about all fluid and put the half gallon I had leftover of g13 . Tomorrow I will go get more coolant. So the question is did I ruin my motor? Crack the block or heads? Should I fill the rest with 50/50 mix? When I ran the car it held operating temp just fine but the fan wasn't blowing warm.
View 4 RepliesI lost my power steering on the way home from work today (40 mile commute). Stopped at a gas station half way. About 5 miles after noticing the problem. Lifted the hood and noticed fluid along the line towards the radiator. Reservoir was empty. So I added a quart just purchased from the station and noticed the fluid level immediately began to drop. Decided to finish commute home. Stopped after 10 more miles, reservoir was empty so I added another quart and finished the drive home.
My camry has 150k miles so I am not surprised. So I parked it at my house and looked under the hood/car, I definitely have one hose leaking in the engine area. It is the hose located near the radiator on the passenger side that comes from the reservoir. The "U" portion is metal and has corroded away. It spits fluid when the steering wheel is turned. The pump actually is pretty clean with no leaks from it.
But when I was underneath the car, there is a hose completely severed. Roughly 2inches of exposed hose before it disappears into a manufactured hole in the car floor with a rubber gasket around it to hold in place. Where this hose is supposed to connect too. It drips P/S fluid, but nothing changed when turning the steering wheel.
I have a MK4 2.0L 8v 5 speed and recently I started making trips out to the country that last a bout 25 minutes one way and I usually drive pretty spirited the whole way.
I recently noticed that after each trip my coolant reservoir drops significantly, about 1/2" or 3/4". The oil level never changes and the engine never passes 90C on the gauge.
The outside temperature is about -10C most of the time and I always have it at operating temps before I really get into it.
I can't decide if this is normal because the engine isn't overheating (as far as the gauge says) or a problem because it's using a lot of coolant. I've never been to a track with this or any other car so I'm not sure about the effects from hard driving.
The engine revs to 6.2k RPM and I never go over 5k.
So I've been noticing my power steering in the reservoir has been going down for quite some time. Now its more noticeable than ever. Just about a month ago I topped off the tank to the "max" line and now its at the "min" line. I also notice the fluid on the garage floor. I've always had a lot of grease (I assume the fluid) all around the body and under the reservoir under the hood. It seems to be leaking from the hose where it connects to the actual reservoir. Maybe the clamp is bad or something.
View 14 RepliesMy power steering fluid reservoir is a little low. Which type or brand of power steering fluid should I fill it up with?
I know that I should use Dextron III, but does the brand matter? Or can I mix the OEM fluid with an aftermarket fluid.
I think I blew a power steering hose. I lost all my fluid and lost power steering. I'm at work. Is it safe to drive 3 miles home with no fluid?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2001 Jetta 2.0 5 speed. Some months ago I was driving in a little snow and turned my wheel at just about full lock, in reverse. All of a sudden I hear a gushing sound coming from around the steering wheel/floorboard. Power steering officially ceased to work. Ive drove with it like that for a while now. To the point where the rubber around my steering wheel is all falling off. But it's getting old.
I've replaced the pump four separate times. Nothing. Can't hear the pump try to work. Fluid comes in to the drivers floorboard. My whole carpet is soaked with it. Also, I refill the reservoir to keep the pump lubed and everything, but for some reason if I turn my AC on it makes the pump instantly burn out. Complete with smoke and the pulley snapping off. Ive looked for leaks, loose hoses etc.
So I noticed some grinding noises in my Mk IV VR6 the other day... checked my PS Reservoir and it was empty. Topped it up with some Pentosin, then 3 days later it was dry again. Looked underneath the car and the steering racks were drenched...
View 10 RepliesSo this weekend my Y-fitting for the coolant hose (coming out of the reservoir) broke, literally after arriving at my friends house about 50 miles from home.
I "mended" it, and decided to try to take it home, as it is my daily. Temperature would get high, but not into the red, and drop back down. On the final rise, it got a bit too close to red for comfort. I drove about 25 miles, and my coolant light was on the majority of the time. The last 3-5 miles, my oil light came on. When I went to pull off the road, I pushed in my clutch and my car died. My first assumption was a head gasket (as I have been there before.
I open the hood and coolant is pouring out of my "mended" y-fitting. I check under the car - no oil, just coolant. The oil didn't seem to be "milky," but there seemed to be some sort of condensation on the filler cap. I checked the dipstick - not milky, just liquidy. I added some oil to the car, and had a friend bring some distilled water, and did a little bit better job of mending my fitting. I poured the distilled water in, and it started boiling almost immediately. I let the car cool for a couple hours and tried to start it, but nothing.
There's no white smoke, but the car just "puts" for a few cranks, and then it goes back to cranking. Looking around the engine housing, there doesn't seem to be any oil; but my car has a lot of grease on the block, so it's hard to say.
I did some searching, and it seems that it could be the oil cooler? I don't have the tools for a compression test, and the car was towed to a gas station, which is about 30 mins from my house.
The car is a 2004 Jetta, 1.8T Manual with the 5-speed.
I have a 94 Celica 2.2. I'm having issues with power steering fluid leaking from reservoir cap. I replaced the cap due to the old ones seal had dry rotted and dip stick was broke off, also replaced the 2 small short hoses and new clamps. The return hose is working right and the high pressure hose seems to be working right. None of the hoses are leaking but pressure is building up and pushing fluid out the reservoir cap. What else could be the problem to cause this??
View 14 RepliesI've a problem with my 2000 Nissan Maxima GLE. Recently I started hearing noise from Passenger side of the car, and I noticed that the Power Steering Fluid Reservoir is almost empty. Looking more closely, I see some kind of leak. Could this problem indicate something wrong with the Rack and Pinion or the Pump itself.
I went to autozone today, and bought a Power Steering Fluid with Stop Leak. I added the liquid, and turned Steering Wheel to the right and the left. After doing this, I checked the reservoir again, and I saw the reservoir level was very low again. I repeated the above steps until I reached the point where the reservoir level was to the high point.
I would drive for couple of days and see if the reservoir level goes down again which point to leak still existing. While waiting on this test, thinking what could have gone wrong here that is causing the Power Steering fluid to leak. I've also attached the picture which point to suspected point of leak.
So I was late getting ready to go somewhere and knew that my coolant was low and asked my dad to fill it up for me and he accidentally put the coolant in my power steering pump. I don't think it will really effect it.
View 9 RepliesSo I'm not sure if this thread goes here or not, but I thought I'd throw this out there to see if I could get a definitive answer: I started to hear some whining from the steering when I turn, checked the PS reservoir, and it was a bit low, so I added some fluid (the correct type, too). The whining hasn't stopped, but I'm not getting any leaking anywhere. I've done some searching on Vortex and other sites but can't come up with any useful information regarding the use of Lucas Power Steering additive (or any other additive) with VW steering systems.
View 2 RepliesI have an 06 Jetta VR6 and it's making a lot of power steering noise (humming and howling). Is steering pump failure common in these cars?
View 4 RepliesWhy my 2002 Jetta 1.8t does this?
After I drive for a while I have to [slowly] open the overflow cap and relieve pressure in order to not lose coolant while the car sits. It steams for a bit when I open the cap and then the coolant rises in the reservoir then I close it.
If I don't do this then the car loses coolant but I don't see any leaks visible under the car.
I own a 2009 Corolla. Cannot locate where the power steering fluid reservoir is. I googled and also looked under the hood, no luck.
View 6 RepliesSo the big rubber hose attached to my power steering reservoir is leaking and my mechanic told me to replace it. I went to a couple of different Autozone stores and they both couldn't identify the correct dimensions of it. They told me to take it out and then bring it to them. This is very hard for me since this is my only car and how to pull the bottom bit of the hose out from whatever it's attached to.
I've measured the length to be about 2.4 feet but I'm not sure on how thick it is. I've taken a pic of the hose here:
I have an issue with my 2004 GLS 3.5 L w/ 68000 miles. After the SUV warms up for a few minutes I can hear a whine or rattle on the passenger side. I noticed a little power steering fluid leaked out the top of the reservoir (a few little bubbles in the oil). Then reading on the HMA website it says the filter in the reservoir can get clogged and restrict the flow. I took the reservoir off and flushed it out then replaced with new oil.
Unfortunately this did not fix the issue the noise is still there. It's most prevalent when you turn but the noise also picks up a little when you hit the gas. I have checked for hose leaks but cannot find one. My next step is to have the steering pump changed out. While the mechanics in there I am going to have him check the hoses/pulleys really close and look around for another leaks anywhere. Noise is annoying but the steering works fine.
