Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Mk4 Running Choppy And CEL Is Flashing In Cold And Foggy Weather
Dec 15, 2014
Just bought my 2004 Jetta GLS from a dealership last week. 2.0 Engine. Has 140K miles on it. 2 hour drive from the dealership to home was cold and foggy but it ran fine. In town stop and go traffic in foggy conditions since last Thursday and it has run fine. Got a downpour this morning and all of a sudden it is running choppy and the CEL is flashing at me.
I have a 96 MK3 as well that would run badly in the rain until I changed out the Electronic Coil. Got so I would carry spares with me.
Is it the same fix for the MK4 2.0? I've also read about using epoxy or JB Weld to coat the coils and keep the water out. Does that work for the MK4 Ignition coil?

1999.5 Jetta 2.0 Lit, engine 186000 miles, bough it few months ago and this issue is driving me crazy.
Engine Light "ON" and "OFF" depending on weather conditions.
On my , No Engine Light in Cold and humid weather. When weather is hot the light goes ON.
I was thinking on changing the O2 sensor(the one after the catalytic) I do not know if this will solve my problem,
I will like to change the oil, it is using regular 10/30 SAE what grade and kind will be suggested?.

I've got a 1.8T 2004 automatic and the problem I'm having is the shifter is harder to move since the weather's been colder. It shifts very well and is responsive, it's just that I have to pull it harder to select P, R, N and D. D is especially hard (no pun intended you sick minds! ) to select, the shifter kind of stays in neutral but shifts after a bit. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Side question: is the rear defrost supposed to turn off after a certain period of time? My 2002 golf does it but the jetta doesn't.

Today was the worst weather ever since the Tiguan left the factory, it was -10˚C and it was parked outside.
When I turned the car on, the coolant light was flashing with a beeping sound. The indicator was acting normally and it stopped in the middle as usual when I drove about 8KM.
I then stopped and turned the car OFF and then ON after a few minutes and it was gone.
I searched and many people said something about topping up the coolant fluid. To me, this doesn't make sense because it only happened to them and I when the weather was cold.
Is there anything to worry about? the car is still new with 12,xxxKM.

I just got my wagon (2002 used) and noticed that the chrome detailing around the back windows of my wagon were getting really foggy in the super humid weather. What is the solution? Wait for winter? I assume the high humidity is just causing condensation in the plastic/chrome or whatever and when I press my fingers hard to it it goes away (consistent with moisture). Can this be fixed? She is so adorable without these clouds!

2004 passat 1.8T with 190K miles. Very well taken care of drove great a few days ago and i did notice a few hiccups during acceleration from stop or just accelerating from say 30mph. Nothing major figured something in the spark system
Today I was driving and it got alot worse. If I use 3/4 throttle or more the acceleration is so choppy that the car wont go anywhere until I ease out of it. now the Check engine light started flashing when this happens. Only thing different about today is that its colder
From the search and my moderate knowledge of cars the possible culprits are (in no order):
fuel filter
spark system (coils, wires, plugs)
plugged cat converter
Ignition module?? (not coils)
MAF sensor
Vac line/s
Pcv valve
190K miles. She idles great no a single hiccup. I am thinking pcv valve and fuel filter?

So my temp light comes on in my 2002 gti 1.8t. The light comes on with the engine cold and not running, just keys in. I replaced the temp sender and the fan switch. I already checked the fuses, still good. The only thing i can think of now is the relay. There is plenty of coolant in the system as well. And I am not getting any CEL.

I have a 2001 Toyota Sienna xle that started running rough when the weather turned cold. When started, the car idles very high and will not shift properly until it was been running for around 5 minutes. After that it will run well for about 10-15 minutes and then begin to run rough or poorly. The problem is very noticeable at low speeds and when stopped. It never actually kills, but it feels like it is going to. At high speeds it is less noticeable but occasionally you will feel it jerk or chug like the transmission is slipping or a belt or something.
I took it to a mechanic who checked the codes and found that the ignition coils were supposedly bad. I say supposedly because they replace three of the ignition coils and the problem still persists. I then took it back to the mechanic who then told me it was the oxygen sensor. The o2 sensor was replaced and the problem is still there with no noticeable improvement. I again to it back to the mechanic who tells me that they scratching their heads.
I have done some looking around on the internet and have found some discussions that seem to have some promising leeds and actually last weeks car talk show had a caller who described a similar problem. The guys told him it could be a oxygen sensor but they thought a better possibility would be EGR valve or a vacuum leak. Not sure if this sienna has an EGR, but I plan to suggest looking into it to the mechanic. Also, I found some discussions talking about the idle control valve and the engine control module.

My 120,000 mile 2003 VW Jetta will not start in cold weather. It starts fine when the temperatures are in the 30s, sporadically in the 20s and not at all in the teens and single digits. When I turn the key, the engine does nothing; it does not crank. Three mechanics have not been able to figure out the problem.

My 2003 VW Jetta TDI has a major problem. The engine has likely been damaged by an oil leak that was not discovered until the oil ran out. I now have much reduced compression (340lbs or less) and the car doesn't like to start in cold weather and when it does it smokes much. I need to know if it is worth rebuilding and, if so, where I might have this work done.

Our 2006 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with 227,000 miles, recently started to fog up inside everytime we drive it. The dealership cleaned the sunroof drains thinking that was likely the cause (although, the car is always garage parked). That did not resolve the issue. We have to have the defrost on full blast to be able to see out the windows, and still we need to roll back windows down to wipe condensation to see out of them when making a turn.

In cold weather, I hear a periodic whining sound from inside the car, any speed, disappearing after about 5-10 minutes when the car is completely warm. It seems to come from the driver's side dash or foot well. It is getting worse with time. Car is very new, only 2500 miles with no other problems. It is not the heater. It is not from the engine bay...I think. Very weird. Only happens when the weather is cold and disappears when the car is warm.

In the cold weather I found I had what sounded like ticking noise at idle on the R. It doesn't do it when first started and I didn't remember it in the warmer weather either. My research indicated it could be the DI injectors or the N80 valve. But what got me concerned was that I could hear the ticking inside the cabin, somewhere in the front passenger footwell area. And at times over normal radio volume. This was not the case in any of those other threads on the issue as they noted the sound only outside the car.
So I took the car into the dealer this morning to see what they would say. Had a good tech check out the car and try a few things. Turns out the tech found it was the fuel line underneath the car rattling. He said this was a common issue in the MK V cars and there is a service bulletin out on it, but he had never seen it on a MK VI car.

We had light snow here in Boston tonight, and its a little chilly, nothing crazy. I get into my car after finishing work, start the car as normal and clear the snow off the windows.
Get back in the car, select 'R' and the car doesn't roll back like usual... I apply some gas and... nothing. I try 'D' and again the engine just revs - its just totally failing to get any gears. Engine oil levels are good.

Recently my 2005 VW golf has not been starting in hot weather. The radio, lights, and every other electronic will start when i turn the key. I will push the clutch in and try to start the car and the engine will not even try to turn over. I hear the starter kicking in so I know its not the starter. I had multiple mechanical tests done and no results came up. No warning lights are on. I brought it to a mechanic and he replaced the clutch relay... and that didn't work. If i leave the car windows open for about an hour after the interior of my car gets too hot the car will start. So I am thinking if it has to do with a relay in the cab of the car. What this will be or what I should try?

My 2000 F-250 6.8L V10 has a choppy idle during the first 30 or so seconds after a cold start up in the morning then it smooths out and drives perfectly. If I were to place the truck in gear during the choppy idle, it would not die and throttle response would be fine.
I cleaned the MAF sensor and checked the PCV elbow for cracks (no cracks). It idles at about a 1000 rpm during a cold startup then drops to about 750 rpm according to the dash tachometer. The truck has 187,000 miles on it.

My daughter bought BIL's jetta and loves it. Already had to replace the seal on the oil cooler which wasn't too bad to do. But now she's out of town with the car and it won't start. Said it did start and run for a bit, long enough to get half way down the driveway and then die. Won't start again for her. Called BIL and he said it had done that to his daughter also during high humidity times. Well we have been foggy all day, guess that counts for high humidity .Could this malady be from condensation under the cap or is it something more sinister?

I'm planning to mention this to the dealer when I get my first oil change, but I've been wondering if this is normal for the 2.0T. When stopping at a red light for example and the car downshifts through 2nd and to 1st, it gets very choppy - almost jumpy as it comes to a stop. Seems like I really have to concentrate to make a perfectly smooth stop.

My car has 130k miles and has recently developed a worrying noise. It makes an extra whirring sound, like another set of gears spinning, but I don't think I would describe it as a grinding noise. I live in VT and I thought maybe it was my (studless) snow tires making more noise in the warm weather because I noticed it about a month and a half ago when it warmed up. Now that I have my all season tires on, it's still making the noise. The tire guys didn't notice anything wrong when the swap happened (but they only do tires there and I didn't ask them to look for anything).
As far as I can tell it is dependent on wheel speed, not engine speed. It starts at about 20-25mph and gets louder the faster I go. At about 65 the normal road noise is louder than the new noise. If I turn the wheel to the right to any degree the noise goes away. I can't tell if it is completely gone, but it seems like it is. There is no real change if I turn the wheel to the left, though it might get slightly worse. When the noise is going I can feel a vibration in the floorboard that matches the sound. The sound seems like it is coming from in front of me, but I can't really tell if it is left, right, or center. As far as I can tell that is the only new noise, no clicking/griding when I turn the wheel etc.
I'm taking it in for normal 130k maintenance in a week....

The R has 48K miles on it. The other day i realized after driving it, a choppy noise coming from almost directly under the spark plugs. As the car was cooling down while still on the noise stopped for a few seconds and then started again. Any clue of what this might be?
