I know this is a common problem, it sounded like the coolant resevoir was the place to start so I replaced it today and I still have the low coolant light blinking, I don't know what else to do.
View 6 RepliesJust put a side post battery with top post adapters on. I drive to town the battery light was flickering with every little bump finally it turned off. Got to the house car shut off tried to turn it on and nothing no click nothing. The dash lit up half way the radio flickered on and off constantly and and the ebrake light flashed with a beep. I'm at wits end. Just bought a tire and battery and filled the tank and now this happens. 2000 jetta 2.0 GL.....
View 1 RepliesOkay so recently I was driving my 2000 Jetta and the coolant temp light came flashing on, when I went to check the coolant I was surprised to discover that it was like a mud brown color, almost looks like peanut butter. From everything I have read this can be from a few things, either rust build up that is gunking everything up and oil getting into the coolant somehow. I'm pretty sure its rust build up but I was wondering what everyone thinks about this, I was also not using G12 coolant which I'm told now is the premier brand for VW's.
View 3 RepliesI got an 02 gti automatic. My low coolant light has been coming on often lately. I checked my coolant level and it was real low. I added coolant and the light didn't come back on. After a few weeks the light came back on. Again I had to add a lot of coolant..I have no leaks though. Where could all this coolant I add be going? I am not over heating or anything. Its like my car is literally drinking this and peeing it out, I have to add some almost every week now for the light to stay off.
View 24 RepliesMk4 Jetta Gli 1.8t , car was over heating only when sitting 5+ minutes at idle, mechanic said the big fan needed replaced so he replaced it. Car still over heated so i replaced the coolant with G13. It hasn't over heated yet but got in the car this morning and the coolant light started flashing and car was telling me to STOP the car. Checked out the coolant and it was on the low side. What it may be? Leak somewhere? Bad thermostat or water pump gone bad? Timing belt and water pump were done when i bought the car when it had less than 50k miles, car now has 99k miles on it.
View 7 RepliesToday was the first time my wagon has stranded me due to a mechanical issue. During city driving my coolant temp light came on so I pulled over to check it out. The fans appeared to be working, the coolant was a fair bit above the normal mark, but I'm not sure the water pump was running. I couldn't feel anything when I squeezed the top radiator hose. This is an '03 with about 50k miles on it.
I'll be taking it in Monday morning so I was curious what people's thoughts were. If it's the water pump is there anything else I should consider getting replaced while I'm at it? I'm still on the original timing belt, a change I've been delaying a long time since I drive so little so it might be time to bite the bullet and do it.
I have an 03 Golf VR6 and only has 76k on it. Ive only had it a week but I have come to notice a couple peculiarities. So first off at night regardless of speed or RPMs, ALL OF MY LIGHTS have a slight flicker. Its not a huge difference, but its definitely noticeable. Engine runs fine. No battery light. Additionally, twice when I go to start it in the morning, after starting the alternator workshop light will kick on. after giving it a tiny bit of gas it goes away and doesn't come back. Everything else seems fine. no check engine lights, no trip meter resetting, and the flickering seems to be sporadically. Tonight I tested the battery and alternator and both tested good. My only thought is that it might be a loose ground. Tomorrow I plan on taking a look at the ground under the battery. I've tried searching the threads here, but Im having trouble finding any relevant info. Also, is the voltage regulator inside the alternator, a separate piece, or in the ecm?

Sometimes when I start up my car ( I want to say when cold, but I haven't tried after its warm yet), the coolant light and warning come up. I obviously checked the coolant, and it is a little low. But it's been where it is since I bought the car, and I haven't noticed any leaks. After I turn the car off then on again the light goes away.
The car is running perfectly fine, it's not running hot or cold. Another thing I have noticed is that my fans don't seem to be working. ( I know it's a common problem). But I'm thinking this could be the fact that it's below 0 today.
I haven't gotten it scanned yet, but what's going on; i.e., Thermostat, sensors, fans etc..
I've got some problems going on with my 2001 VR6 Jetta. I was driving home from my way to work this evening and all of a sudden the indicator light came on and told me to stop and check the coolant level. Within about three minutes the car was already up to about 200. I pulled over to a gas station and the coolant reservoir was completely empty. So I began to pour coolant in the reservoir and fill it up I notice I was pouring a lot of coolant so I went to the hood looked on the driver side below the bumper and water/cool was pouring out everywhere. I inspected as many radiator hoses as I could and did not find any cracks. The water seem to be pouring out from around the thermostat housing. My question would be since I don't know whole lot about cars would they crack thermostat housing because you need to have this problem?

I have searched in the forums and read that its likely a coolant sensor and requires replacing the coolant tank. I am wondering if there are other possible causes as I want to drive it for another 3k before replacing tank (as I will be having timing belt replacement and coolant flush at that time). Previous owner had universal (green) coolant in and it will be replaced with proper coolant when the flush is done.
The indicator comes on within a minute of starting the car. The thermostat seems to operate just fine and car is not overheating. I have topped off with diluted water, it definitely has proper level.
Safe to ignore as long as I watch coolant level and temp?
On a separate issue: I tried to use code reader but it would not connect to my car (had successfully connected at some point prior), I believe it may be because I have an aftermarket radio (the K-wire issue?). If that is true, should it resolve if I swap the stock radio back in? I need to be able to connect to the car eventually when it is time to renew registration (for state emissions control testing).
I have an automatic (ugh) 2002 Jetta 1.8T that is displaying some fun stuff. My kneejerk reaction is that the ECU is croaking but wanted to run it by some people with more experience/smarts.
Here's the deal. I don't get any codes, ever. Sometimes, when I turn the ignition to on (Before starting) all of my warning lights are dim and will flicker, and the gear indicator at the bottom of the cluster rapidly switches between each gear. If I start the car like this, I can hear the shift lock randomly engaging and disengaging. If I actually try to drive, it'll shift hard into reverse, shift normally into drive, and then drive in limp mode. I only drove this way three times before figuring out the next bit. Each time, either the traction control or air bag warning lights came on and stayed on.
I've noticed that if I turn the ignition to "on" and it's acting up, all I have to do is leave it on for a few seconds, turn the ignition back off, and turn it back on; sometimes it'll take 2-3 tries but it always seems to work. Then the warning lights come on bright and steady, the car starts like normal, and drives great.
So, is it the ECU? Is it demons?
I've been experiencing power loss at random times while driving, idling, With almost always flickering headlights on my mkiv 1.8t gti. Also on what always seems like the exact same spot on the freeway I'm losing all power to the wheels and it feels as if my plugs aren't firing for about 10 seconds Which causes me to bog down. At which point I down shift and play the throttle until my motor then begins running normally again.
I've semi recently replaced my battery and terminals, due to corroded terminals and worn out battery. Is is possible a ecu reset could solve this problem?
Also when the power surges during driving my traction control and hand-brake lights on the tachometer will flash and the car will beep three or four times (same as when the hand-brake on beep).

So here's the deal. I first purchased the car about 2 months ago. Aside from preventative maint (plugs, coils, new fluids, oil, filters, etc.) no problems with the car whatsoever. However, I noticed at night with the lights on, the instrument cluster and every now and then the lights will "flicker". Not knowing when the original owner replaced the battery, if ever (it was an OEM battery so I wasn't positive), I figured maybe its a sign the battery was going.
So I replaced with an OEM VW battery a couple weeks ago (less than 1000 miles on it) and it appeared the problem was corrected. The instrument panel and even headlights, seemed brighter too and no flickering! Then last night, I noticed it was happening again. There is no problem with the car, except for the flickering, and I'm wondering if its not the battery, is it the alternator? What are some other problems I might expect to see if it was? Do I just get a voltmeter and test? Is there an electrical wiring issue somewhere?
Not sure if it matters but I did do a search and noticed some people have had problems after a rain storm. Im in NC and it rains almost every day or every other day, most of which I'm not driving the car but it sits outside. It did rain the other day when I noticed it happening (not while driving just prior to me driving). ALso, no CEL or Alternator Workshop.
I have a MK4 PD150 with the ARL engine and it's drinking coolant!
I'm no mechanic but I think I've narrowed it down seen as there is no visual leaks on the ground. EGR cooler or head gasket.
I've had the car about a month and the garage I bought it from said that it had been pressure tested so this makes me think that it would more likely be the EGR cooler? It's been sat on my drive for three weeks also as I've just passed my test after recently turning 17.
I have an old chevy that I ran G11 in (used to be a vw tech so I was able to get my hands on G11 all the time) so to take advantage of the freebies that's what I ended up putting in it.
being hard to get a hold of today, I am gonna swap to green as I can get my hands on that now for free.
is it ok for these two to partially mix?? I won't be flushing the system, just draining and filling so I might not get every drop of the blue G11 out of the engine.
So it was like -10 here today, and I've had a coolant leak which could be the crack pipe? It's coming from the center of the motor and covering the oil filter housing. Anyway I've been adding distilled water until I could get coolant. So today I went out and the coolant reservoir was slushy ice. So I open the drain and drained a bunch out then added some coolant while it was draining to work along with running the engine a short time with the drain open and that got it flowing out. So I drained just about all fluid and put the half gallon I had leftover of g13 . Tomorrow I will go get more coolant. So the question is did I ruin my motor? Crack the block or heads? Should I fill the rest with 50/50 mix? When I ran the car it held operating temp just fine but the fan wasn't blowing warm.
View 4 RepliesI have a 24v vr6 and I have deleted my coolant ball (I should also mention this is a dry system, New motor and the rest of the system was dry). Now I have a moroso fill neck that i cut and 90, so it would fit in my upper hose. I'm using a spill free funnel that hooks to the top of the cap and allows me to have the fluid level above the motor . But when I run the motor the coolant looks like it boils out of control and makes a mess of everything. Plus my fans are not kicking.

After the first week, the coolant light came on
Had some G12 handy, topped it off (like 8-10 oz)
All good
2 days later, it came on again, added about the same amount
4 days later, it came on again, added the same amount
1 day later, it came on again, added the same amount
I am adding 50/50 mix, but haven't seen a puddle anywhere, Nothing looks wet, but then again its hard to see around the plastic cover ...
When my 2000 GTI VR6 sits for a week or two the coolant will run low. There are no leaks that I can find. No coolant in the oil. The crack pipe looks dry. Nothing from the thermostat hosing that I can see. The carpet by the heater core is dry. Nothing that I can see. The thing that is funny is I can drive the car with it 100 degrees outside in Georgia and have no problems with the coolant getting low, or any signs of a leak, smoke or smell. The head gasket and every gasket except the oil cooler and oil stand gasket were replaced about two years ago. The heater core was also replaced at the time. I gave the front pulled loose so I can pressure test the system and look more today.
