Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Lost All Power Steering - Should Replace Pump?
Mar 30, 2015
I've lost all power steering about a week ago. I checked all the lines the return is bring fluid up from the pump and the res is flowing into the pump.
A) should I replace pump?
B) look into other things that could be causing the issue?

So I was late getting ready to go somewhere and knew that my coolant was low and asked my dad to fill it up for me and he accidentally put the coolant in my power steering pump. I don't think it will really effect it.

A few days ago I had a big PS fluid leak. Turned out the return line had been sliced a bit. I had to drive it for a couple days before I could get around to fixing it. The steering is still stiff and the pump whines. Is this an indicator that I need to replace the pump?

So, I'm replacing the Steering Box today and read an article that said you should replace the pump at the same time. what do you all think?? I have clear access to it now and they are not all that expensive?? Or are the ford one's bullet proof and leave it alone???
I don't have any leaks and it feels ok I guess..just pushing close to 200K on it.

Driving home from movies tonight, I lost power steering and power brakes and the pump started growling. Looked in the reservoir and it was all foamed up. Within the last 20k mi I have flushed the system and refilled with power steering fluid. No apparent leaks at this time. And happened like someone flipped a switch. Fine one turn, nothing the next. What are the chances this is a fluid issue and not a mechanical one? Start with flushing system and adding Mercon V? Or is it likely pump is damaged?

Across Internet is lot of examples of using pump, usually drill pump or vacuum. It seam to me that drill pump would work good for that job. Pump that attach to battery have limited amount of power and vacuum pump is manual. Look like a excellent device for transmission fluid change. Clearly no drain screw at pan. I do not think I'm fan of disconnecting return line and live empty tranny.

So the other day I replaced my N75 valve and upgraded my DV to the Forge 007. For some reason the turbo doesn't spool like it did before, it's lost it's pep.
I've tried the Yellow and Green springs, also I tried them with the shim too. No luck. The car got turbo back exhaust, intake, and stage one program.

My friend's Jetta was running fine. One day about to drive out of the driveway it started doing 2 things:
1. Felt like it lost power braking, just stopping by manual effort by pushing down pedal hard.
2. Engine stalling unless you keep the gas pedal depressed and holding the engine to about 3,000.
Car currently sidelined until this is fixed... Having the brakes go like that at the same time is strange so where to start. Brake fluid level is fine.

2000 jetta 1.8t ... Yesterday driving home from work (1.5 hr drive and it was 25+ degrees) my car died on the highway just before I made it home. Just lost power all of a sudden with no warning signs before and no overheating. No lights came on I just felt sudden loss of power and pulled over and turned the ignition off and it wouldn't start again. Just makes a high pitched whining noise and won't crank over. I just found out the other day that both O2 sensors need replacing but I can't see that being the reason.

So after a long trip from my vacation I ended up running over a dead deer on my 2004 VW Jetta GLI 1.8T AWP. As soon as I hit the car turned off. I was looking around to see what the damage was and everything looked intact but my car still wouldn't turn on. I checked some things and came to the conclusion that there was no fuel running to the engine (whenever the key would be on the "ON" position the fuel pump didn't make the usual "whirring" sound meaning it was on).
So I checked the fuel pump fuse, that was good but when I checked if there was current in the fuse, there wasn't. Then I disconnected the fuel pump to see if there was current going through the connector and there wasn't. This led me to check the fuel pump relay. Relay looked good and when I checked to see if there was current going through to the relay, there wasn't. So my issue is that the car is not turning on because there is no current going through to the fuel pump and no current to the relay and fuse.

Over the past week its been pretty cold here in IL (hovering around 30 degrees). Car makes a binding noise when its cold, but only when its cold. Noise is VERY similar to this:
Is this my PS pump going out, the rack itself, or something suspension related? Fluid level is up to the Max and there are no leaks....

Long story short, my car died on me shortly after pulling out of the driveway a few weeks ago. Initially I thought it was my fuel pump because it wasn't priming when I had the key turned to the "ON" position. Here's what I know for sure:
The fuel pump works. It was tested and is not the issue. The relay is good.
The fuse from number 28 is good. There isn't any power at the fuse. The shop has been tracing wires and looking at diagrams and cannot find any breaks in any wires.
The ECU has been swapped for another one. When I turn the key to the "ON" position, the check engine light and EPC light come on, then turn off after about 3 seconds. They do not stay on.
What else could it be? Car in question is an 01 Jetta 1.8T AWD motor code.

I have a 2005 Volkswagen GTI with 80k miles. Just yesterday I went to school and the car drove fine. But when I came back and tried to start my car, it stalled out after a few seconds. Now I thought this was a bad fuel pump until I checked it and found that the fuel pump wasn't receiving any power. I checked the fuse and it was intact. So then I went to check the relay and found that if I unplug the relay and plug it back in, the fuel pump momentarily receives power for about 2 seconds then nothing. Any clue what the interference could be?

I have a 2001 Jetta 2.0 5 speed. Some months ago I was driving in a little snow and turned my wheel at just about full lock, in reverse. All of a sudden I hear a gushing sound coming from around the steering wheel/floorboard. Power steering officially ceased to work. Ive drove with it like that for a while now. To the point where the rubber around my steering wheel is all falling off. But it's getting old.
I've replaced the pump four separate times. Nothing. Can't hear the pump try to work. Fluid comes in to the drivers floorboard. My whole carpet is soaked with it. Also, I refill the reservoir to keep the pump lubed and everything, but for some reason if I turn my AC on it makes the pump instantly burn out. Complete with smoke and the pulley snapping off. Ive looked for leaks, loose hoses etc.

So I'm not sure if this thread goes here or not, but I thought I'd throw this out there to see if I could get a definitive answer: I started to hear some whining from the steering when I turn, checked the PS reservoir, and it was a bit low, so I added some fluid (the correct type, too). The whining hasn't stopped, but I'm not getting any leaking anywhere. I've done some searching on Vortex and other sites but can't come up with any useful information regarding the use of Lucas Power Steering additive (or any other additive) with VW steering systems.
