I would really want to know what is causing this sound as it has become louder.

The noise is coming from the area of the pulleys, and can be perfectly heard behind the passenger side front wheel.
The car is an AWD 1.8T Golf 2002 model.
I own a MK4 Golf GTI which has recently started making a rattling noise when I first start the car (Perhaps cold weather?). It will continue for roughly a minute despite load (A/C, acceleration) before It stops and It won't happen again until the car has cooled down hours later. It's quite an unsettling noise and I would like to be set in the right direction.
After a couple hours online I'm leaning towards perhaps the belt tensioner being to blame? I haven't delved too deep into the noise but do believe it is from the left side of the motor. Can likely clarify on the weekend.
Is there anything to worry about? If so, where do I start? I myself was trying to fiddle around and see if the noise would happen at higher revs, which it seems to. [URL] .....
I have a 2003 1.8t jetta. I got it in the fall and never really needed to turn on my AC until this week. It works, fans work at all speeds, blows ice cold air.
But i noticed today that my fans can be on and nothing. But when I hit the AC button there's a loud rattling sound. Everything works. It's just making noise when the AC is on. Whenever I turn it off the noise goes away.
I tried looking it up and couldn't find anything.
I'm new to the VW family as a couple weeks ago I purchased a 2003 VR6 Jetta. So far I LOVE it and it's been by far my favorite car I've driven. About a week ago, I was visiting my parents back home (I'm a college student) and when I went to turn on my car to go back to school I received the alternator workshop message. I didn't want to take the risk so I took my sister's car back to school and my dad took my car into a local mechanic during the week.
Unfortunately, the mechanic we took the car too does not specialize in European cars (They're just a general mechanic/Ford dealership), but we didn't want to take the risk of driving a car with a potentially failing alternator to the closest VW mechanic (About 40 minutes away). The car was repaired and a new alternator added. All was going well, but I began to notice a slight "clunking" noise when first accelerating/lifting my foot off the brakes. I didn't think too much of it and it wasn't very loud nor severe. To me, it sounded like the interior plastic shifting when I moved.
Anyway, here I am a week later and I'm noticing a lot of noises that didn't exist before, including the clunk I just mentioned. I took a few audio recordings. (For the record, there is NO CEL or any dash lights currently on, thus why I'm not as concerned).

In this link, I'm driving the car around the parking lot in which I park my car here at school. It's mostly bumping gravel, but at the time of the recording I was driving very slow. You can hear a squeaking noise.

In this link, I'm revving the car while parked. Something I've noticed that it didn't used to do is rattle while idling ever so slightly (It's not audible in the recording), but in the recording you are able to hear a slight clunking noise.
I did my pads and rotors this weekend. On the fronts I had some difficulty with the passengers side retaining clip. It was stuck in on the bottom. I wound up bending it out of place trying to get it off, and eventually just removed the caliper without it.
I took it out for it's first regular drive today and there is a rattling noise when the passenger's side goes over bumps (could be front or back, hard to say). I have theorized that the clip is deformed enough that when it gets jostled, it bumps out onto the rim which makes it go twang (which would be consistent, it's a relatively high pitched rattle. I'm going to look at it tomorrow, but I'm not sure what I should actually do. Can I just clip it off? What purpose does it serve? I might be able to get it out with WD40 and bend it in to shape.
Mk4 12v vr6 afp. 170k ish. No real mods except a cleaned up bay. Was death knocking LONG before I started the bay. Probably 6k miles. My car knocks/rattles bad in low rpm but promptly stops all noise at 4k and up. Makes the noise in any gear but only when throttle is applied. Even does it when revved up in neutral. No CEL other than one explained later.
Suspecting wrist pins as con rod bearings are brand new (replaced for no reason they were fine) and i removed head and no problems were found. Lifters tick a bit but that's all. Cleaned and put back with new headgasket. Shined up the pistons of course. Timing chains also done. <10k miles on oil pump. I even tried taking the shifter rod completely out and driving to verify if that was the rattle and no change. What could be left mechanically?
I was afraid the noise was preignition because I was getting codes for knock sensor out of range, so I replaced the knock sensors multiple times each, coil pack, wires, new ngk bkr5e plugs gapped correctly, fuel filter and pump. Have ran multiple tanks of premium 94 from different stations as well.
The ecu pulls timing back to 0 btdc and it is still knocking so I just decided that the knock sensors are picking up a mechanical knock rather than pinging. Only thing left is wrist pins or piston slap. Maybe injectors causing a lean condition?

My 99 Jetta is rattling. The noise comes from the front center of the underside of the car. It started out only when I was accelerating and would disappear when in neutral or after reaching 40mph. Now its when its idling and driving at any speeds under 40mph (I think it just gets drowned out above that speed). I looked under the car and saw that there might be a piece causing the noise but I can't figure out what it is. It seems to be in-line with the exhaust system and its a metal, cylinder looking piece that has uniform holes in it. I'm just trying to figure out what is causing the noise, if I can fix it easily or if this is going to be a pretty expensive fix. (It has 165k miles on it, is a 2.1 gas engine with the new body type).
View 1 Replieswhen I bought my 2003 gti 1.8t it had a small exhaust leak, I decided to investigate today and found that the downpipe flange and turbo flange was rattling around, there's almost 1/16" of play and it's making a rattling noise. I can't tighten the nuts on the studs any more but that might just be from them being seized in place. I'm getting a new gasket and studs and nuts and hopefully that will fix it?
View 3 RepliesJust today i was driving along in my 2.0L golf when I started hearing a rattling coming from under the front end, its a hollow sound that only really is loud when i step off the gas after accelerating, and a faint little rattle when I am idled. I wasn't too bad at first but now its to the pint where i get no exhaust sound coming out of my muffler, currently I have a 2.25" Magnaflow cat-back exhaust system, so I am pretty certain it has to do with probably the resonator or the catalytic converter. Where I can start?
View 2 RepliesI have this rattling noise. i have gotten under the car, and resecured the heat shield its starting to rust around the mounting points but that's not the issue, on the driver side near one of the large rubber plugs i hit around it with a hammer and there is something inside of it that is rattling starts around 1900rpm and stops around 2500 rpm how do I get in there to get the damn thing out? Its not the cat nor the exhaust etc.
View 3 RepliesOk so lately I noticed a horrific rattling coming from the rear of my car. It happens mostly when I'm in a high gear going slow with a load on the gear. It's sort of like the rattle that comes from the exhaust with the same gear load but it's much looser and rattley sounding, and it doesn't always do it. It almost sounds like a piece of sheet metal in my spare tire well rattling when there's a gear load and the exhaust rattles. But I checked in there and it seems tight.
View 5 RepliesMy exhaust on my 01 was rattling. It was coming from the catalytic converter, I assumed it was the heat shield. Put it up on the lift and lo and behold it was something in the cat that was rattling. I was popping a code for the cat anyways so figured I'd just swap it out. Fast forward to tonight. I get the car back up on the lift and I wiggle the cat but no rattling? I go farther back to the first muffler/resonator now it's rattling. It's not a hanger or a heat shield or metal to metal on the outside, there is obviously something of substantial mass inside of it I can almost feel where it is by wiggling around. I chose to wait and cut the exhaust up a different night because I plan on taking that section out as well now, hoping to get out whatever is rattling. If not I'll just have some spare pipe on hand to replace it.
View 6 RepliesMKIV Jetta wagon 2004. Bought used last year. Four previous owners with 125K on it.
Problem: After oil change where I previously had 5W-30 with valvoline dino, I changed with a different brand 5W-30 (Peak brand). Ticking noise started immediately from engine area usually only after it got up to temperature. Also using different oil filter. Initially not sure if it was injector or lifter tick. It ended up being lifter tick, and the give away was when going down a small hill and the engine downshifting, the increase RPM caused the tick to increase at the same rate. So here is the path I went down.
1. Swapped out oil filter - no change. I thought this might work because I was using a fram tough guard.
2. Added some rislone with ZDDP additive. Quieted down the valvetrain quite a bit, but did not solve the problem
3. Added rislone engine treatment. Got better, but still not totally solved.
4. Tried to "drive it out" and get some mileage on the rislone . Didn't work. Definitely better though
Finally, after all that I figured let's give my baby some of the thick sauce. So I pulled out a quart from the diptube with my suction device and put in a quart of 10W-40. Almost immediately PROBLEM GONE. So either that crappy peak oil doesn't have the viscosity that it advertises, or the valve train is just getting old and needs a little bit thicker oil in the summer. Probably both. I will also keep using a small dose of the ZDDP additive to extend the life of the valvetrain, as it sounds really good with that stuff in the system.
So im trying to diagnose my girlfriends issue with her car. When she starts it, the car will make a very loud rattling sound, not really grinding, but like metal on metal contact. Sometimes the sound goes away, but when the car is cold it is a guarantee. The battery light is also on, which was not the case when the rattle first started. I first thought (and hoped) it was perhaps the serpentine belt tensioner as I researched that when it fails it can make a loud rattle sound.
Once replaced, the same issues occurred. So I went ahead and put the old one back on since it was not the issue. Note that the old one and new one both shared the same tension applied to the belt and the pulley was still smooth without issues.
Using a stethoscope to try to determine the location of the rattle a bit more precisely I found the noise to be coming more from the alternator. Weird because I recently replaced it within the last year. I went ahead and removed the tension from the belt and played with the alternator for a bit. The clutch felt good when i used a screw driver to hold the fan and tried to move the pulley. One direction moved with ease while the other direction refused to budge, perfectly normal as I researched. The thing that I noticed that I thought was unusual was the fact that the shaft of the alternator had some play (Video below).
The belt has plenty of tension on it so i do not believe that it is slipping on the alternator. I push the belt with the tensioner engaged and the tensioner does not budge.
I decided to measure the voltage coming off the alternator with the car running and it was at 10.95 which im pretty sure is very low for these cars.
Sometimes (most of the time) whenever i turn on my car, there's sort of like a clicking noise (really loud, if you get out of the car you can still hear it), push the clutch in and its gone. The other times when it doesn't start right away, the car warms up and the noise is present. I don't know if its normal for Volkswagens to do that, But i didnt notice it when i got the car. Im not sure if its the engine, trans or clutch. At first i thought it was my A/C because whenever i would turn it off the noise would go away.
It wasn't the A/C, it started to go out, don't have money to replace it, so now i always leave it off. the noise stopped for a little while but eventually came back. It only happens when the car is idling, start to accelerate, it goes away until i come to a stop again.
It's a 2000 Golf 1.8t 5 speed manual.
2005 Jetta. The car makes a loud deep humming noise once I hit about 75mph, and goes away once I get to about 82 or so. I've taken it out of gear and matched the rpm I get at those speeds, and I don't hear the noise at all. It's only when I'm in gear. What this could be?
View 4 RepliesJust wanted to make sure this isn't a problem? Sometimes after a drive, usually longer ones, when the engine has heated up and running for around 20ish minutes, I hear a harsh bubbling noise coming from the engine.
I popped the hood and wanted to see where it was coming from, I touched around and felt the dipstick (oil) vibrating, but then I felt the oil pan and couldn't feel any bubbling in there.
Also I disconnected the battery as the bubbling was going on, and as soon a I did that, it had stopped.
I have an 03 GTI, and recently the engine has been very loud at speeds over 25mph. There isn't any rattling, ticking or chugging sounds. It just sounds like my rpm is at 7000, when it's actually 2000.
I'll try to upload a video tonight of driving around.
It happens mostly after the engine warms up. When I accelerate, I hear a weird cranking noise coming from under the hood (sometimes it doesn't happen). I popped the hood to see if there was anything wrong, but i didn't find anything major (there were 3 loose screws that I tightened because I thought they were causing the vibration but the noise persisted).
I doesn't make the sound when I rev the engine, only when I am was driving. It happens roughly between 1500 and 3000 RPM. I read some of the archives to get a few ideas, but the noises people are describing are not like the one I am hearing from my car. The closest thing I found this: [URL] ....

2005 jetta. On the highway when I hit about 75mph I hear this loud humming coming from either the engine or the exhaust, I'm not sure. It disappears immediately once I cross about 82mph. What could this be? Why such a specific range?
View 2 RepliesI have an 03 2.0 jetta manual shifter. Never had issues before this morning. Got in car and sounded like it wanted to turn but wouldnt turn over. After a few attempts the turning sound stopped and I heard an electric pop. Now engine won't even try turning when I turn key it just clicks and engine makes a high pitch noise. Took starter and battery out got both tested and they are fine...
