Golf IV / Jetta IV :: Coolant Seems Like It Boils Out Of Control
Sep 10, 2014
I have a 24v vr6 and I have deleted my coolant ball (I should also mention this is a dry system, New motor and the rest of the system was dry). Now I have a moroso fill neck that i cut and 90, so it would fit in my upper hose. I'm using a spill free funnel that hooks to the top of the cap and allows me to have the fluid level above the motor . But when I run the motor the coolant looks like it boils out of control and makes a mess of everything. Plus my fans are not kicking.

Camry 2002 V6 SE.
I had my radiator changed about 2 weeks ago and ever since whenever I drive the car for longer than 30 mins the coolant reservoir boils over as soon as i stop. After much ado i decided to change my radiator cap to one with a higher rating (while my old cap had a 1.0 rating on it the new one has a 1.1 rating), the boiling over in the reservoir has stopped but the upper radiator hose is taut with tension every time and i'm afraid i might damage my engine eventually.

Okay so recently I was driving my 2000 Jetta and the coolant temp light came flashing on, when I went to check the coolant I was surprised to discover that it was like a mud brown color, almost looks like peanut butter. From everything I have read this can be from a few things, either rust build up that is gunking everything up and oil getting into the coolant somehow. I'm pretty sure its rust build up but I was wondering what everyone thinks about this, I was also not using G12 coolant which I'm told now is the premier brand for VW's.

I have a MK4 PD150 with the ARL engine and it's drinking coolant!
I'm no mechanic but I think I've narrowed it down seen as there is no visual leaks on the ground. EGR cooler or head gasket.
I've had the car about a month and the garage I bought it from said that it had been pressure tested so this makes me think that it would more likely be the EGR cooler? It's been sat on my drive for three weeks also as I've just passed my test after recently turning 17.

I have an old chevy that I ran G11 in (used to be a vw tech so I was able to get my hands on G11 all the time) so to take advantage of the freebies that's what I ended up putting in it.
being hard to get a hold of today, I am gonna swap to green as I can get my hands on that now for free.
is it ok for these two to partially mix?? I won't be flushing the system, just draining and filling so I might not get every drop of the blue G11 out of the engine.

So it was like -10 here today, and I've had a coolant leak which could be the crack pipe? It's coming from the center of the motor and covering the oil filter housing. Anyway I've been adding distilled water until I could get coolant. So today I went out and the coolant reservoir was slushy ice. So I open the drain and drained a bunch out then added some coolant while it was draining to work along with running the engine a short time with the drain open and that got it flowing out. So I drained just about all fluid and put the half gallon I had leftover of g13 . Tomorrow I will go get more coolant. So the question is did I ruin my motor? Crack the block or heads? Should I fill the rest with 50/50 mix? When I ran the car it held operating temp just fine but the fan wasn't blowing warm.

I know this is a common problem, it sounded like the coolant resevoir was the place to start so I replaced it today and I still have the low coolant light blinking, I don't know what else to do.

Bought a MkIV for the fiancee 2 weeks ago (04.5 GLI 1.8T Automatic).. Great driving car, needs some minor love (really dirty, burnt out lights, etc)
After the first week, the coolant light came on
Had some G12 handy, topped it off (like 8-10 oz)
All good
2 days later, it came on again, added about the same amount
4 days later, it came on again, added the same amount
1 day later, it came on again, added the same amount
I am adding 50/50 mix, but haven't seen a puddle anywhere, Nothing looks wet, but then again its hard to see around the plastic cover ...

When my 2000 GTI VR6 sits for a week or two the coolant will run low. There are no leaks that I can find. No coolant in the oil. The crack pipe looks dry. Nothing from the thermostat hosing that I can see. The carpet by the heater core is dry. Nothing that I can see. The thing that is funny is I can drive the car with it 100 degrees outside in Georgia and have no problems with the coolant getting low, or any signs of a leak, smoke or smell. The head gasket and every gasket except the oil cooler and oil stand gasket were replaced about two years ago. The heater core was also replaced at the time. I gave the front pulled loose so I can pressure test the system and look more today.

so i had a huge coolant leak, changed the coolant flange, filled and ran while clearing air out of the system plus a 20 minute drive = NO leaks
once it hit the highway, coolant gone, smoke everywhere...
no visible leaks

I got an 02 gti automatic. My low coolant light has been coming on often lately. I checked my coolant level and it was real low. I added coolant and the light didn't come back on. After a few weeks the light came back on. Again I had to add a lot of coolant..I have no leaks though. Where could all this coolant I add be going? I am not over heating or anything. Its like my car is literally drinking this and peeing it out, I have to add some almost every week now for the light to stay off.

Mk4 Jetta Gli 1.8t , car was over heating only when sitting 5+ minutes at idle, mechanic said the big fan needed replaced so he replaced it. Car still over heated so i replaced the coolant with G13. It hasn't over heated yet but got in the car this morning and the coolant light started flashing and car was telling me to STOP the car. Checked out the coolant and it was on the low side. What it may be? Leak somewhere? Bad thermostat or water pump gone bad? Timing belt and water pump were done when i bought the car when it had less than 50k miles, car now has 99k miles on it.

02 Jetta 2.0L that I changed the thermostat. o-ring, and cover on when I first got the car about a year and a half ago.
I see dry g12 coming out from behind the cover and my coolant bulb had dipped quite a bit in recent weeks requiring a refill. What is most likely the problem here in such a short period of time? I've only put like 10k miles on the car in that period. O-ring couldn't have seated wrong because wouldn't the problem have been apparent immediately back when I did the job? Maybe I need to re-torque the cover? Cracked cover?

My car has been leaking coolant as soon as you put it in from it looks like the transmission area. Today I filled the car with water and drove it on the interstate to work. The car started getting jerky like it was losing power. So I pulled over and when I did the car shut off. There was excessive smoke under the hood and after removing the oil cap, smoke coming from there also. Tried restarting and it sounds like it just spins. No start. Looked at the timing belt, it's still intact. Put a wrench on the crank pulley and it's turning. What's wrong? Is it a goner?

So I was late getting ready to go somewhere and knew that my coolant was low and asked my dad to fill it up for me and he accidentally put the coolant in my power steering pump. I don't think it will really effect it.

I noticed today when I was in a drive thru that ,y Jetta was smoking a little.... Went home ate my food and came out and looked underneath the Jetta and found a substantial coolant leak..... My heater core is bad I know this already... Would this cause coolant to leak outside the car or the carpet only??? I jacked up the car and checked for leaks... There is coolant all over the rear engine mount... And the driver side corner of the engine is pretty soaked in coolant....I can't pin point the leak..... There is a connection coming out of the side of the head that's got a little pinky crusty stuff on it but I can't see anywhere around it...

I have a MK4 2.0L 8v 5 speed and recently I started making trips out to the country that last a bout 25 minutes one way and I usually drive pretty spirited the whole way.
I recently noticed that after each trip my coolant reservoir drops significantly, about 1/2" or 3/4". The oil level never changes and the engine never passes 90C on the gauge.
The outside temperature is about -10C most of the time and I always have it at operating temps before I really get into it.
I can't decide if this is normal because the engine isn't overheating (as far as the gauge says) or a problem because it's using a lot of coolant. I've never been to a track with this or any other car so I'm not sure about the effects from hard driving.
The engine revs to 6.2k RPM and I never go over 5k.

I am leaking coolant at a slow drip but over a couple days my coolant light will come on due to low levels. I climbed under the car and I'm leaking right where the o2 sensors are on the exhaust. The coolant is dripping down from the exhaust shield which was just hanging there when I got under the car.

My 2004 1.8T GTI is having a weird issue. It's had 3 coolant leaks in the past 3 months. Every time I get one leak fixed it goes leak free for a couple weeks, but then a new leak pops up in a new place.
First leak was a cracked coolant bottle. Second was a flange near the bottle on passenger side. The newest leak is on the driver side. Car hasn't ever overheated.

Just purchased a 01 golf 1.8t 5spd and noticed it has a small coolant leak.. Left parking over 2 days in the same spot and it builds up a little puddle.. It's dripping down off of my oil pan and I haven't been able to trace it back to where the leak is coming from..
I've been told it could be my water pump? The car has 92k miles.
