I have a 2003 Jetta Wagon with 49000 miles on it. I noticed that when turning at slow speeds (like taking turns in a parking lot) I hear a klunk coming from the area of the left front wheel, and I think I feel it through the steering wheel. Yesterday I was going around a hairpin turn at a shopping mall and heard two clunks. Driving straight it doesn't happen.

It only happens when I'm turning hard left and going slow. it may happen only when I'm going slow because it's the only time i turn the wheel that much. it's not too loud and sounds like it's coming from the right front wheel well, somewhere around there.
It started about 3 days ago and is getting much more frequent in the last day. It now is happening every time i turn the wheel hard left, and occasionally when I turn right.I have a loose bumper right front also. it's going into the body shop next week to further diagnose by elimination.
QUESTION: is the car safe to drive if there's the possibility of a loose strut mount? i don't know too much about the suspension assembly.
I have a 2012 gti with 29k miles. Now I changed to coil overs for a shot amount of time however I shortly went back to stock for comfort. For the past few thousand miles I have been getting this creaking sound when turning left parked or slow speeds. I thought it might be strut mounts but its only left and isn't a clunking. I have three videos of the sounds so you can see what I'm talking about. I have heard of the infamous cv boot problem but if you look at the last video you can see the Cv boot looks in good shape..

Noticed my 5 week old MK7 GTI is making squeaky noises on the driver's side when turning left at slow speeds. What this could be? Occurs intermittently, not all the time. This is a leased vehicle, would this be covered by warranty?
View 7 RepliesSo... Took my car into a tire shop (tire pros) to get a screw pulled out of my front left tire... And after they finish the job - the guy comes up to me and says "your front brakes don't have much life left." I said, "I know I'm planning to change them in the next couple of weeks"...
He then said, "well I think your sensor just went off, when I pulled the car around.." I said "okay", got in the car and drove off - no brake light what so ever.
Anyways, A few hours later when pulling my car around the corner on the way home - I noticed that I am all of the sudden getting a random scraping sound from the front-right rotor anytime I turn the well all the way to the left at slow speeds...
I'm not too worried about it - just want to make sure these guys aren't trying to sabotage my car! The only thing that kills me, is that I didn't have the sound before and no all of the sudden I do? I'm assuming they somehow slightly moved the pad, causing it to somehow squeal - I'm just not exactly sure what they did...
My front left tire is rubbing to the point where I can feel it in the steering wheel slightly slowing the car down. This happens only going over about 40-50 and only when i turn the steering wheel like an inch to the left. To better clarify it doesn't rub while turning left going down a slope.

Could this be a tie rod, ball joint, or what? How can I be sure before just replacing parts? I need to have this fixed before I get my alignment, which has to happen before I get my rims.

I have been noticing a sqeak/creaking noise coming from the front end usually at slow speeds and going over small bumps or even bad backroads. I can simply push down on the front of the car and hear it and it sounds just terrible. I took it to my local tire shop and they said it could be my sway bay links and bushings, but they look brand new and show no signs of deterioration. My struts and shocks are fine. Could it be ball joints or control arms?

Some people at work stated it could be the CV bolt? Not sure if that is correct, or something else. I am 117K miles, never have replaced anything suspension related.
View 11 RepliesJust purchased a brand new 2012 GTI Autobahn. I can't notice the AFS headlights swivel left to right at slow speeds but at start up seems to work when I turn on the headlights. Is this normal? I had the dealer check it and they said it works fine. They tested it through their laptop and it works but I can't seem to notice the swivel when I steer the wheel.
View 11 RepliesI have started hearing a noise with my brakes. First thing in the morning when I back up and apply the brakes, I get a clunk or pop noise from the left front wheel. It will pop again once I move forward and hit the brakes. It only does the noise one time when I first apply the brakes in either direction. Once the brakes have been used out on the road and are warm, there is no noise when changing directions. I've had this noise in another car I used to have and it was caused by the aftermarket brake pads not being exactly large enough and there was slight pad shifting in the caliper. Being this is a new car and has the OEM pads, I would hope there would be no pad shifting or movement in the calipers.
View 17 RepliesWhen driving at slow speeds and when I go over a bump in the road, I'll hear something like the metal part of the wheel scraping something as its turning. Only comes from the front drivers side wheel. It's audible enough that people usually turn to look when I'm in a parking lot.
Took it to the dealer, they 'test drove' it. Said they couldn't hear anything. Then said that whatever I'm hearing is 'normal suspension noise'. So after leaving it a full day at the dealer, nothing has changed. Since when is ANY suspension noise normal? But I don't think its the suspension. What to do? Take it back? Take it to another dealer?
I have a mystery noise coming from the left front wheel.
I have a 2002 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder, SE Model, 150,000 miles
It sounds like metal on metal. It only happens at low speeds (less than 20mph). Only happens when I turn the steering wheel right. While I am driving straight, the noise is not there.
Here is what I have changed on my car in the last 3 months:
-New Brake rotors
-New Brake Pads
-New sway bar link
-New sway bar bushing
-New outer tie rod end
-New lower ball joint
More Observations:
-CV joint is not leaking
-Checked the struts for proper movement
-The strut seems properly seated in the bearing plated, nothing broken (under the hood)
-I confirmed that the disc brake shield is not in contact with anything
Am I missing anything? What else could be causing this?
I have an 02 Jetta 1.8t automatic with about 140k miles. It has always been a great car. Last week, I was taking off from being stopped at a light and I heard a loud beep and saw that my oil pressure warning light was blinking! It blinked 3 times and then was gone, now last week temperatures were very low for my area. Today was actually pretty warm and sunny. I was stuck in gridlock traffic, it took me 25 minutes to go 1/4 mile. Idle, Idle, creep forward... Idle, Idle, creep forward...etc.
I noticed that the temp gauge read over 200, not in the red, but too close for my liking. Then a moment later when it was time for me to move up a bit, there was a beep and then that low oil pressure light again, 3 blinks and gone. I was panicked. I shut my engine off while I waited for traffic to move and when I would move forward it was the same thing. I finally pulled over, as I was stuck in traffic about 1000 feet from a friends house. I stayed there for 4 hours and then decided to fire her up again. Totally normal.
40 Minutes later as I rolled into my driveway, boom there was that light blink again... I am really concerned but confused by the light not staying on continuously and not having the check engine or any other warning light ever come on. It's weird to me that when this happens I am either taking off or coming to a stop, never going more than 5mph.
My '98 Honda CRV with 190k miles has begun to make a curious sort of noise. I noticed a sort of humming noise coming from in front and somewhat to the left of the steering wheel a couple weeks ago, but could never get it to happen while I had the hood up in my driveway. The other day I rolled down the window and drove slowly around my neighborhood to figure out what made the noise happen.
First thing I learned is that it is much louder than I initially thought. And it sounds like a sort of screeching metal on metal sound, with a sort of humming. It always starts when I am moving slowly, such as when starting from a stop at a stop light, or going very slowly around the neighborhood. Turning the steering wheel seems to aggravate it, and make it more likely to start screeching. It will begin while driving straight, however. Once the noise begins, it stays until I come back to a complete stop.
I even tried stopping it by putting it in neutral and using the parking brake, and no difference, so nothing to do with the brakes. The brake rotors were also turned by the previous owner before selling it. My first guess would be a CV joint, because the boot on that wheel is not sealed properly. But my father, in his experience, says bad CV joints could make the steering feel more loose, and when starting and stopping you could feel some slop, neither of which he could detect when driving it. Steering feels tight, there is no play, and I have not been able to detect any other deficiency besides that awful noise.
So, is this a CV joint? A wheel bearing? Is it something else I have not thought of? And, how difficult are these to replace yourself with a good set of tools?
In July I noticed there was knocking in the front left wheel when that wheel was turning either left or right AND went over slight/heavy bumps..it sounded like some metal knocking....i had my mechanic put the car on the lift to check for any VISUAL problems, and he didnt find anything wrong...said it was probably the bushings inside...so yesterday the knocking got much worse and the ride sucked...so i put the car up again and found out that the left axle needed replacing, which i did..so the harsh ride went away but the left wheel knocking is still there...WHAT COULD THIS BE?? Im thinking that maybe it was this problem that caused my axle to break... [IMG] [URL].....

I've read several people in the forum who has encountered this. I read different remedies but the most common one is to have the CV boots lubricated.
I have a 2014 Wolfsburg with almost 5k miles. I am really now worrying about my water pump crapping out on me but I heard this grinding sound yesterday.

Pretty much every time I back up and turn, I hear one loud, single pop from the front end. Occasionally, it will happen when I start forward from a stop (if turning) but that's it. It never happens at any other time. I can't decide if it's suspension or steering related. Where could this be coming from?
I have gone through the front end thoroughly and the only issue I find is my passenger inner CV boot has begun to crack and has lost some grease. I would expect a CV failure to click anytime I'm moving and turning. Again, I never hear this noise under any other circumstances.
Installed a new OEM CV axle on my 05 GTI the other day because I had been having a lot of issues with off brands and then today (I'm a delivery driver) on a run I was turning into traffic from a stop and I heard a clunk and then no power. The engine was still running flawlessly, but no power driver to the wheels.
I'm not going to be able to get a good picture until we get there but I'll upload pics when I get them. The bracket looked completely f'd. I could only find two of the 6 bolts that hold the CV axle in place and one was snapped in half.
Over the past few months I'd noticed an intermittent grinding noise coming from my left front wheel at low speeds. I took it in once but it refused to play along so I finally managed to catch it on camera and let the dealership listen to it. They booked me for today, saying it sounded like a wheel bearing (to which I agreed) and I dropped her off around ten, not expecting it to cooperate for the second time.
I got a call from the dealer around 2 PM saying that they were able to duplicate the noise and that when they took the left front wheel off and ran the car on the lift with the rest of the wheels off the ground, the noise went away. Even stranger still, when they put the wheel on the tire balancing machine and spun it, gronch, gronch...gronch, gronch....gronch, gronch. It was coming from inside the wheel! I gave them permission to dismount the tire from the wheel and about ten minutes later I got another call saying they'd found a handful of tiny hard rubber balls inside the mounted wheel/tire assembly that were rolling down the inside of the wheel and causing the grumbling at low speed.
Here's the kicker: they were in all four wheels! The tech even saved them for me so I could take a look and they don't look like anything mass-produced; some are larger than others, some are round and some are oval-shaped but when I dropped one on the glass advisor desk, it made a very clear 'Clink!'.
