Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2004 - Tink Sound From The Turn Signals
Dec 8, 2014
'04 Jetta Wagon TDI I just bought for my brother and his family. The car is in unbelievable condition even with 206k on it. I have met my match in automotive anal-retentiveness as there's not even a door ding on it. The tech who did the pre-purchase inspection wanted to buy it from me before I'd even paid for it!
The Hubster drove the car home after paying up and found that the "tink-tink-tink" sound from the turn signals continues on after the signal has been turned off. It's much worse when using the right turn signal than the left. It often does it for no logical reason, like when driving on the highway.
I owned a '00 VR6 GTI for 12 1/2 years (bought new) and never had this problem so I'm at a loss. We want to give the family a trouble-free car and are hoping this is an easy and inexpensive fix, not one of those really expensive .

My mk4 jetta is causing me a hell of a fuss right now. The rear turn signals and the signals in the fenders are working but the front signals are both out. The signals blink fast as if it's a bulb but both bulbs and all fuses are good. When the hazards are on, they blink normal speed but the front lights are still out.

When I turn on the turn signal it blinks once or twice and stops, but my emergency signal works! Could it be relay??

The issue I am now experiencing is my passenger headlight would only turn on once in a while . The driver side headlight would work just fine both high beam light also . Today I opened my hood I verified the cable had a poor ground to the headlight I noticed a burnt smell after checking the cables . I turned on my high beams both sides turn on . Then out of no where my turn signals both (Left - right - back and front stopped working. Including the Hazard lights both front and back). The cluster would not show neither turn signals turning on ( left-right ) I noticed that my headlight turn signal on the passenger side would turn on but not blink it would stay dim only when . I pushed the hazard light button . My cluster would show the right turn signal ( no clicking no flashing arrow ). The driver side would not work either. What can I do to fix the problem? I know that I will not be able to drive the car due to the issue.

Last weekend my headlights, wipers, turn signals, AC, and horn stopped working. Through searching and another post I narrowed the issue down to my ignition switch. After taking apart my steering column and getting the switch out, I found this...
The house which is connected to the switch, with the one of the red wires obvious fried....
So I'm hoping this problem and I'm wondering who else has had this happen. When I took apart the ignition switch itself, nothing appeared to be damaged. No burns no broken pieces, etc. the metal post on the outside corresponding to the fried wire on the housing was corroded, but that was it.
I think I need to replace the housing since all that plastic melted and I chipped it away to get to the connector. I can't seem to get the connectors on the wire off of the metal connectors that are supposed to be in the housing.

Yesterday my 2003 VW Golf TDI turn signals stopped working. The hazard/emergency lights do work. Also, when I push the signal lever forward the brights don't engage. Does this sound like a bad relay or blown fuse?

Got in the car this morning and my headlights, windshield wipers, and turn signals would all not turn on or work.
I'm not sure if the this is a problem with the stalks on the steering column or possibly a relay.
When i pull the left stalk my high beams will come on but only when i do that.
The windshield wipers would not turn on at all and the windshield wash would not even spray as well.
I also noticed that my AC/Heat controls wouldnt respond either. Any clue as to what it might be.

My Jetta has had an off-and-on clicky turn signal sound without turn signals or hazard lights actually blinking. I put up with it for a while, but recently it's been more clicky than not. I'm aware this is a common problem. I had already tried the cleaner spray "trick" which made the problem worse if anything. Today, I removed my signal stalk as described here and gave it a cleaning. After re-assembling, the clicky problem didn't go away, and now the high beams are always on (even with the key out of the ignition, and the car isn't running). I temporarily dealt with this by pulling fuses 18 and 19 for high beams. It's an ok short-term workaround. Low beams still work fine.
I'm considering replacing the hazard signal relay, but a while ago I messed up while trying to use ghetto removal keys to pull my radio.

Today I noticed that the "click" sound on my turn signals was gone. I had someone watch the front and rear signals and none of them lit up if the clicking/dash light didn't either. Sometimes it would come on for 2-3 clicks, then stop. I could sorta force the issue by flipping the level back and forth, but it only worked for about half of the times I flipped the lever.
I tried the hazard switch. In this situation, the lights stay on (blinking), but they have an irregular cadence, like a heart murmur (just in signal form!). Click-a, click-a, cli-cli-cli-cka...etc.

A few weeks ago, I went out to my car & the remote opener would not work. So I opened the door with the key. I went to start the car & it would not start. I got absolutely nothing. I also then could not get the key back out of the ignition. It would not even turn back to the original position. My father get the car started with a jump, but since then my car radio does not work. I also do not hear any noise when using the turn signals. They work, but no "blinking" sound. I tried to research this thinking maybe you have to "reset" the radio after a power "outage" but have been unable to find anything on how to do this. My husband recently passed away and I'm feeling a little lost when it comes to issues with my car. Where I can find some info?

My 2003 Jetta GLI was making a terrible grinding/knocking noise when i would turn and occasionally make this "Bong" sound especially when reversing. I took it to my local shop and they say my spring in the front left is "either broken or unattached" and that i need spings/struts. I have like 150k miles on this car so the timing is probably right. So my question is, how much should they charge for this? Also, what should i have them order and install? Im not trying to lower or anything like that, OEM or a slight upgrade is what im looking for....

Ok, I can't seem to get straight info anywhere. I want to replace my turn signals (front) with LEDs because one went out (gives me an excuse). I can't seem to figure out exactly which bulbs to buy nor can I figure out if I need to get anything additional to make them work. I see things on a few websites, which say I may need the resistor (or whatever) to make it blink. But I can't figure out what, exactly, I need.

I noticed today that though the small single LED visible to the driver flashes when you signal, the apparent row of lights on the back of the mirror does not. Is the clear stripe across the back of the mirror that most cars have to augment the directional signal just decoration on the GTI? Or does it only light up on SE and Autobahn models?

I just noticed this driving home tonight and I have no idea when they stopped working. I have a few guesses.
1 : I installed puddle lamps and either didn't plug something in OR when they were coded something went wrong.
2 : I have colored side markers with no bulbs and they are somehow connected.

2004 Prius here. The turn signals and hazard lights stopped working a few days ago. I found a disconnection in the grounding and repaired it. Also replaced the fuse and the flasher switch. Now the lights work, and I can hear the flasher switch clicking, but they don't blink!

So after a pretty harsh storm last night I was driving today and my wipers came on. Went to turn them off and nothing. My headlights and turn signals won't work either. When I pull the stalk to turn my high beams on my wipers go off. Parked the car and the dash lights stay on without my key and the wipers randomly go on and off. The blinkers in the rear remain lit with the car off as well. At work right now so nothing came up when I searched briefly but do any of you have any insight as to why my car is possessed? Going to check grounds when I get home.

I had a strange experience this week. Monday afternoon I discovered that my turn signals and 4-way flashers weren't working. I booked a repair appt at my Toyota dealer for Friday.
Wednesday evening I had to make a very sharp turn (270 degrees, roughly) and then discovered that my signals were working again. So I canceled my repair appt; the dealer speculates that there's a short circuit somewhere, which certainly sounds reasonable.

A few days ago my speedometer stopped working. Then yesterday all of my gauges stopped working, as well as my turn signals. If this is a fuse issue then which fuse it is?
