View 10 RepliesSo i was trying to adjust my freinds shift linkage on his o2j and i got a little ahead of myself and forgot to put the shift tower in the home position before making the adjustment. after i realized you can't shift into second ( either that or 2nd and 4th are extremely close together now and feel like the same gear ). I try to get it in home position even with the cables off ( did this for experimentation) and still wouldn't go into home position...meh. still have all the other gears including reverse .
View 4 RepliesI have an 01 Jetta, 2.0L, 5 Speed manual transmission.
The issue seems to be that the shifter wont shift the transmission "all the way" into 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear. When I shift into the gears that are forward on the shifter, it will go into gear, but then the shifter (in the car) moves back toward neutral a little. I can drive in 1st no problem, but in 3rd and 5th some weird stuff happens...
While driving, when I shift from second to third I have to keep my hand on the shifter otherwise I get kicked out of gear. Also, when I drive on the highway, I periodically get kicked out of 5th gear if I don't keep my hand on the shifter (usually, when I let off the gas).
Anyway, being that I've fixed many problems on many cars by searching forums and google, I spent the last few days trying to figure out the problem by looking through the forums, but I have yet to find a solution. I tried adjusting the shift linkage using the method described in the dieselgeek video on youtube [URL] ...., but it didn't work. I'm pretty certain it's not the shifter bushings because i have almost no play in the shifter in neutral.
I had someone cycle through the gears while I watched under the hood, and its clear that the cable that controls the forward and back part of the shifting is not pulling back far enough on the counterweight on the transmission. (When shifting into 1st, 3rd, and 5th.) When the shifter puts the tranny into these gears I can still move the counterweight on the tranny further than the shifter will pull in in the same direction.I tried adjusting the linkage to compensate for this, but the cable is as far into the cable end as it will go...
Have a question when I shift slow from 2nd to 3rd my o2j tranny doesn't grind but when I shift fast from 2nd to 3rd it grinds it happens starting at 3000 Rpms thru 6000 Rpms. It also doesn't happen when I shift from 4th to 3rd. Have performed a tranny fluid change. Along with replacing the clutch at 1500 miles ago. The engine is AWP.
View 4 RepliesGot a 2001 Jetta 2L automatic 200k miles with gremlins. possibly multiple unrelated problems. First problem that presented is that the transmission will occasionally not shift into 4th gear. I discovered that if I stop the engine, then restart it, it will again return to normal operation, hence the thought that it is electrical. After a year or so of this, second problem pops up: the engine will die while the car is driving, or some times idling at a light. I've also noticed that the interior lights flicker somewhat in intensity when on and the engine is operating, so there could definitely be a grounding issue somewhere. I have heard that the ECU/ECM connectors could become corroded, but haven't yet dug into it to look. Any guesses as to where to begin?
View 2 RepliesI have an 04 jetty with an auto Transmission. It doesn't seem to shift after the first time when speeding up. What might cause this?
View 5 RepliesBought a 2003 golf gti 1.8t as kind of a project. Car had no interior no exhaust and some shifting issues. To fix the shifting issues rather than replacing solenoids I just got a rebuilt valve body. After installation the car still doesn't shift from 1st to second properly and now I don't have reverse. (It's an 09a transmission)
View 1 RepliesSo I changed transmission fluid on my 1.8t GLS because I was having difficulty shifting out of gears on cold starts. It seemed to work fine for a few days and now I'm back to square one, it still doesn't want to shift correctly!
View 14 RepliesI just recently bought a 03 Jetta and it doesn't shift until it is warmed up, once warmed up it runs great. I was told it needed a transmission change but when taking it to Aamco they said it needed a valve body. I read that it could be the solenoids that are causing the issue. Should I replace the whole valve body or just the solenoids? What is the main components in the valve body?
View 2 RepliesMy 03 Gli 24v manual transmission has been acting up lately. First it started to get a little difficult to shift into gears about a week ago. Then tonight i was driving through a parking lot in 2nd, and after i came to a stop i tried to put it back in to first and it would not go into gear. As i was trying to get it into 1st i could tell it was grabbing a little bit and the car was inching forward.
I got it to a parking spot and starting reading about other peoples issues, one i read said they were able to get it to move after pumping the clutch some. After trying that i was able to get it into gear and drive it to my parents. Looked at my brake fluid and its full. Took it for a test drive around the neighborhood and it was shifting fine at first then started getting a little difficult to shift again. I tried taking off in 6th and it stalled. I tried going from 1st around 3k-4k rmps to 6th and it was still driving with very little lugging. My clutch feels and is still stiff, not loose at all. I do have to go all the way to the floor with the clutch before im able to shift
Finally to my questions. Could my clutch be going bad? Could my cables need adjusting? Something I read about a pressure plate maybe?
Just bought this car yesterday. test drive went fine with no issues. Started driving it home and the check engine light came on ( no big deal i thought car runs great). I go to advance auto and their scanner won't hook up to it. So i start looking at the fuses and everything was good except it was missing the the number 7 fuse ( reverse lights/speedometer sensor), so i replaced the fuse. i get home and i decide to take it down the road one more time and it all went down hill quick. EPC light came on, the car wont shift out of first gear (automatic). so i let it sit over night with the number 7 fuse out and the battery disconnected. CEL never disappeared this morning and its do the same thing. It looks like the MAF was just replaced and the brake light switch looks like the newer green version. Im going to replace the brake light switch this afternoon and i already cleaned the MAF. Another thing that i noticed that is very strange is now the Foot symbol by the shifter has gone out. The one on the dash still is working properly but the one at the shifter does not light up at all now.
View 1 RepliesI bought a 2003 Jetta automatic w/ triptronic.
When the engine is cold in the morning(when i go to work) engine light(CEL) comes on and the car remains stuck in 2nd shift for 5-10 min(happens 1-2 times a week).
When I get back from work car goes well and the CEL is off.
I went to a shop and I found 4 codes:
00300- transmission fluid temperature sensor(G93). not a plausible signal-intermittent
00526- brake light switch- F short with power-intermittent
00652- gear monitoring not a plausible signal- intermittent
01045-tiptronic switch (F189) not a plausible signal- intermittent
I was thinking that it's possibly a transmission control module gone bad, but I'm not sure.
Car specs:
- 2003 VW GTI VR6 24v
- 100,000 miles
- Clutch replaced at about 80,000 miles
A few weeks ago, I noticed a very slight noise coming from my shift boot. The noise wasn't a grinding or clanking noise; it was more of a noise that sounded like keys jingling or coins rattling (the best description I could come up with).
Anyways, it would only occur on acceleration. When the car is in neutral or shifting between gears, there is no noise. It lasts generally for about 3-5 miles, and then goes away. I haven't had any change or problems in shifting.
Not sure if something is loose in my boot, or if the linkage may be off, or if I should maybe change out the gear oil (since the noise goes away after the car is warmed up).
This is on my 7.3PSD. I've observed that the 1-2 gear shift drops about 1,000 RPMs and takes a good half second or longer to do so when given a lot of accelerator pedal input. And then the 2-3 shift is a very quick and harsh shift.
If I am accelerating gently the 2-3 shift is as unnoticeable as the 1-2 shift is quick. Is the slow 1-2 shift causing the trans to protect itself and affecting the 2-3 shift? And if so, what do I do to resolve all of this? I changed the trans fluid a week ago and there is no change.
Long time listener first time poster. My wife has a 2009 Vw jetta 2.5 with a manual transmission that is very hard to shift. It has 80,000 on it and has had the clutch replaced once. She told me that she never had any problems shifting until she let it sit for two weeks while she went to cape cod. I have driven it myself and can confirm that there is an issue. Sometimes it just will not go into gear. No grinding noise at all and very very stiff when moving the stick shift laterally from first to fifth. Not actually shifting from 1-5 just moving the stick across the range it feels like cement. I have already changed the transmission fluid and used the Vw oem oil. I also removed the shift boot and lubed all the moving parts with a high quality grease. Tomorrow I am going to bleed the clutch slave and have a good look at the shift linkage. Is their something I am missing?
View 5 RepliesI went on vacation for a week and left my car at my parents house. I came back and now it has become extremely difficult to shift between gears. It's nearly impossible to get the car into reverse, extremely difficult to get it into first, makes a thud when pulling it out of first, is semi difficult to get into 2nd, but only a mild nuisance to get into 3rd through 6th.
For more information, the car is a 2012 Volkswagen GLI with just shy of 40,000 miles. The car ran just fine before I went on vacation and the car was not moved while I was on vacation. I did notice that a little ticking kind of sound when I had the car in neutral with no clutch. So the throw out bearing was starting to wear, but it was a very slight. But I haven't had any other problems.
I have an 01 gti vr6 5speed... All of the sudden, i cant get the car to shift into 2nd and 4th and neutral still sits in the middle, but way back, almost where 4th should be. It seems like everything is out of alignment somehow. I parked the car, went into the store, came out of the store and drive away and the problem started. Just like that, no warning.
View 3 Replies4 cylinder Sonata with 177k miles on it. When I first get in the car and drive away the transmission doesn't want to shift up. I have a manu matic type shifter so I usually just shift up as the RPMS reach the normal shift point. Eventually the transmission starts working but sometimes it acts up and I'm back to shifting myself. Sometimes it shifts hard or double shifts. I'm getting conflicting info from different mechanics. Some say change the transmission fluid and that should fix it. Others say don't because it could open up a bigger can of worms and I will be buying a new transmission shortly after. What should I do?? I can't afford a new car nor can I afford to buy a new transmission.
View 2 RepliesI had the transmission in a 2003 Honda V6 rebuilt in Nov. 2014. It is slow to change when starting off and slow to change into the next gear. Sounds like it is hung up for a while. Is this normal for a recently rebiult Transmission?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2002 Golf GLS. About a week ago I was driving around like a raped ape and spilled some soda down the gear shifter. I cleaned it up and didn't think anything of it. Recently, now that it's been getting colder out I found that my car doesn't want to shift out of park when I turn it on. No worries, just did the ("Step on the brake pedal five times,
hold the brake pedal down, start the car, shut off the car, turn the key a quarter turn, move the shift lever between neutral & drive, start the car and then you can move it into drive.") and shifted into gear fine.

So i was driving and I went to shift and my clutch never came back up. Long story short after searching the forums i think it might be my slave cylinder and throwout bearing. There was a puddle of fluid under the car.
I was planning on using this DIY : [URL] ....
Just wondering if all i have to do is follow this up to step 48 and replace the throwout bearing and slave cylinder.
