My 2002 Jetta GLS 2.0 is misfiring only when it rains out. I go to start the car and the car idles extremely rough and seems like it wants to die. I checked out the codes for the check engine light and I got misfire codes p0304 and p0300. Which is a general misfire detected, and misfire on cylinder 4. I noticed that when I misted the alternator during the day around 70 degrees with the car running the car would misfire and almost die out. I know you are not supposed to get the alternator wet, but keep in mind i did not soak it I misted water on it. I misted the coil pack and nothing happened. I replaced the spark plugs and wires a few days ago. But as soon as it rains my car does not idle right and the check engine light flashes.

This morning i went to start my car and threw a flashing engine light. common sense says its a misfire. i know it's probably smart to check my spark plugs first but here's my dilemma. if it isn't the plugs and turns out to be my ignition coil, where the hell is that even located? I have an 04 Jetta 2.slow engine

So my gf's check engine light on her 01 Golf flashes once in a while, and it misfires. But the thing is, it doesn't stay on, and it's once in a while (like once or twice a week). She has new spark plugs, and new wires. I have a feeling it's the coil pack, but I really don't know if it needs to be replaced until the check engine light actually stays on.

Just a few days ago I was driving and I noticed as I went over 35 mph my car would stutter and the check engine light would start flashing. And when I slowed back down the car drove fine. I'm wondering what the problem could be? Feels like the car is losing power. Car is currently at 119k miles.

2002 Jetta 2.0.... car was jerking when accelerating and check engine light was flashing, severe loss of power and when stopped at lights it would shake and the rpms would drop and go back up... took it in and was told to get the coil pack replaced. One week later new coil pack - check engine light is back on and yesterday same problem (car was idling rough, and severe jerking/flashing check engine light happened again). Took it to autozone to read the code it is giving P0420.... The shop said i might need new plugs and wires, which were replaced with bosch parts one year ago. Any chances these went bad so quickly?

Last night I was driving in my 2003 jetta on the intersate at 65mph with the cruise control on. As I came into a turn I had to tap the brakes. As soon as I did the check engine light came on. The car was doing fine so I drove home from school. Today I drove the car to work which is a five minute drive, and back with no problem. I later went to grab lunch and bring it home and then I noticed the check engine light started flashing. I then felt the engine start to stutter, as if it was misfiring. We had the windshield defrost when we started to smell a rotten egg smell. Luckily we were pulling into our drive when we smelled the odor. I immediately turned off the car and got out. I couldn't smell the rotten egg smell, but I did smell burning plastic. I didn't see any smoke and could not pinpoint the cause of the smell.

Here's my question. Recently my muffler fell off the back of my car and was dragging on the ground. The front bracket had snapped off and so had the pipe right where it comes out of the front of the muffler. I want to replace with the stock oem muffler but i can't afford it right now. My question is can i just take the muffler off for the time being so it wont drag on the ground? Will this harm the engine or be completely absurdly loud? Is this even legal....

I have a 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8 5Speed. With issues.
The problem that I first had (and have always had since): While driving under 30mph but at random times, my ASR / ESP light and engine light will come on and my car will lurch and lose power (I can't go above 20mp at that point this is the limp mode that traction control puts you in I think). I have to pull over and restart my car. And then the ASR / ESP light is gone and the engine light stays on for a day or so. After restarting my car everything seems to function fine.
My car would also chug a bit if I didn't let it warm up in the morning it acted as though it would die. After sitting for a minute it would be fine.
My mechanic initially thought there might be an air flow issue. He found a hose that was cracked at the end but said I didn't really need to replace it. He taped it up and used a clamp to keep in place. I have no (ok little) doubt that it is air tight.
When the problem continued he thought it might be my MAF sensor. He had a used one and replaced mine with it. It seemed to work, I didn't have the problem again for some time. But it eventually came back.
Also, I started to find that when I came to a stop light my car would idle roughly. If I put the car in park it was perfectly fine. Later, I had an even more serious problem. My car needed to warm up for about 10 minutes before it would shift out first. After plenty of internet searches on sites like this, everything pointed to the N92 solenoid. I purchased all 9 solenoids online and had someone replace them. That seems to have fixed my shifting out of first problem.
I still had the ASR / ESP issue though. So I bought a new MAF and replaced that myself (very easy). I was positive that would be then end of my problems. But nope no change.
Recently I also find that if I slow down quickly, sometimes my car just strait up dies. After restarting all is well.
So if this isn't a MAF issue, what are the other likely culprits? Vacuum leak somewhere? How much would you expect to pay to have that diagnosed (I think they have machines that can test everything and locate points of failure)? Air-flow meter? Transmission control unit? I have heard that they are relatively cheap to replace Engine control unit?

I was driving around and I got a low oil light flashing and it turned off straight away.
So I checked my oil. When I first removed the dipstick it shows full, wiped it clean and put it back and it showed empty.
I put have a bottle (small one can't remember size) of oil in. I drove around parked waited a bit, and it does this same thing.

So a few days ago my engine developed a misfire, flashing MIL light etc...long story short it was cylinder 5's ignition coil. When we scanned it, we picked up a misfire on cylinder 5, and a slight misfire on cylinder 1. Replaced the coil, as well as new spark plugs, cleared the codes, and everything was peachy.
NOW, driving home today.....once again. Misfire, MIL light etc. I'm not a mechanic so I am wondering if it is common for all the coils to go around the same time, or if this is probably just cylinder 1 now going. I'm going to once again get it scanned, but before then...is there anything that could cause ignition coils to just start going bad, other than age.

2000 VW GOLF 2.0L, manual, ~190k miles
Driving down the highway my CEL started flashing and the engine power dropped at the same time. I drove two miles to my destination and the idle was very rough and the power was still very low. The codes were P0300, 0301 and 0304.
The coil was replaced about 2 years ago. The plugs have never been replaced. About 2 weeks ago I had a solid CEL with the codes P1255 and P0422... I purchased a new ECT Sensor but did not yet make time to install it.
Could everything be related to the ECT? Or do you think there are multiple issues?

The check engine light came on in my 2000 Jetta and the engine power suddenly decreased noticeably. Got worse quickly and was idling rough, like it was about to stall out (but didn't). Took it to dealership, they said spark plugs were the problem and replaced. All seemed normal driving home, but after 10 minutes, same problem: check engine flashing, weak engine (trouble on hills), and a rough idle.
Two questions: what could it be?
and is it safe to drive back to dealership (~10 miles) or might that cause further damage?

The past two days when I went to warm up my car, when I got back in it to leave I noticed the engine coolant light flashing. I checked the book and it just says if its flashing to contact the dealer. I have already done so for my next maintenance anyway. It has been around 10 degrees out both times when i started it. 2012 GTI with 9300 miles. Also, if you turn the car off, and start it back up, it does not come back on..

My 2003 MC SS has been acting up, the check engine light starts flashing at me and the car starts shaking when I turn the AC/Heat on. I know nothing about cars and before I take this to a mechanic, what might be the issue, I do not want to go somewhere and get totally ripped off.

Today I was driving and all of a sudden the car started to seem like it wasnt responding well when giving the gas. then the check engine light came on flashing. I pulled over to check in my manual and it says there is a malfunction with the CAT, it started to smell like eggs. now i remember reading once that the smell of eggs is a burnt cat, is this the problem or could it be only the sensor ? How much a new one goes for ? how about the cat, how much does that go for ? if it is my cat how does putting in a high flow cat sound? good or bad ?

My check engine light just appeared like an hour ago. In idle, it sounds like a big flicking V8 Supercharged (I actually feel the car vibrating) and I need to give it a LOT of gas to start in 1st. When I turn the key, it takes a while to start. It is flicking weird. I am dropping my car first thing in the morning, but somebody got that so far?! And the last thing I did before getting the light is reversing in a parking lot and parking my car. I have my car since december.

I replaced the coilpack from the dealer last Summer. It got better as it wouldn't even start for a while after it finished raining. However it has still been finicky even after replacing it. Which brings me to the realization that water runs down the fender panel and ends up on the ground cable located under and to the right of the battery. Am I correct that this would cause the same symptom as a bad coil pack? It seems simple...move the cable right? However should water be doing that? Cause this little sucker is not stopping anything. Just need validation I guess...get new hood insert?

Okay so recently I was driving my 2000 Jetta and the coolant temp light came flashing on, when I went to check the coolant I was surprised to discover that it was like a mud brown color, almost looks like peanut butter. From everything I have read this can be from a few things, either rust build up that is gunking everything up and oil getting into the coolant somehow. I'm pretty sure its rust build up but I was wondering what everyone thinks about this, I was also not using G12 coolant which I'm told now is the premier brand for VW's.

Ok on the way the my 1997 f150 4.6 L 180,000 check engine light started flashing and running rough and then the light went off, Also we took the Aftermarket Dynomax muffler off of it earlier today if that makes any difference, it still has the Cat Converter, New Plugs and Napa Wires.....
