Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 - At Start Up Coolant / Warning Light Comes On
Nov 20, 2015
Car: 2003 Jetta VR6 GLX 24V
Sometimes when I start up my car ( I want to say when cold, but I haven't tried after its warm yet), the coolant light and warning come up. I obviously checked the coolant, and it is a little low. But it's been where it is since I bought the car, and I haven't noticed any leaks. After I turn the car off then on again the light goes away.
The car is running perfectly fine, it's not running hot or cold. Another thing I have noticed is that my fans don't seem to be working. ( I know it's a common problem). But I'm thinking this could be the fact that it's below 0 today.
I haven't gotten it scanned yet, but what's going on; i.e., Thermostat, sensors, fans etc..

Before I go buy a Bentley manual to dig around, when should my radiator fans kick on. I had the car idling for 10 minutes, no ac or heat on, and my coolant warning light came on, it overheated. It already has a new fan switch in the radiator, and the fuses are good.

Okay so recently I was driving my 2000 Jetta and the coolant temp light came flashing on, when I went to check the coolant I was surprised to discover that it was like a mud brown color, almost looks like peanut butter. From everything I have read this can be from a few things, either rust build up that is gunking everything up and oil getting into the coolant somehow. I'm pretty sure its rust build up but I was wondering what everyone thinks about this, I was also not using G12 coolant which I'm told now is the premier brand for VW's.

My Daughters jetta will at time no start after it has been locked then unlocked. She told me that if the car doesn't beep when locked she sometimes has the problem.
The dash will light but no crank at all. Could this be an alarm issue or something else? I

About a month ago I noticed the coolant level looked a little low. I attributed it to the fact that the engine was warm after driving. Tonight the coolant light illuminated and the mfd states the level is low. Sure enough it's quite low.Is this normal for the R? I know my MK5 GTI burned oil like crazy. Should I be concerned?

Had my low coolant warning light and message come on while driving home from work. My car is 1 year old with 30k on it, motor is hot right now and coolant is a good bit below the minimum line (will post a pic soon). I do my service intervals at 7500 miles at most and regularly keep an eye on my oil and coolant levels.
I just checked the coolant last week after an oil change and noticed it was at the bottom minimum line, it's fairly below that now. Does this call for a ride to the dealership? I've seen where people have had pumps/hoses replaced already due to leaks. Nothing on the ground from what I can tell and nothing seems to be leaking under the hood.

After about an hour of driving, the coolant temperature light on my 2010 GTI started blinking. The gauge never showed a temperature higher than the usual 190, including traffic and idling. Having reached my destination, I shut the car off and then back on, happy to see no warning lights at all. One dinner and some three hours later, I started back for home. 20 minutes into the drive, the car sounded three tones and the blinking light came on again.
Like before, the car drove without incident for the rest of the drive, and the light was no longer present once the car had been shut off and then on again. The owner's manual said that the coolant level might be too low, or the temperature too high, but neither of these seem to be the case. The car is equipped with GIAC stage I software and an Audi S3 intercooler.

I know this is a common problem, it sounded like the coolant resevoir was the place to start so I replaced it today and I still have the low coolant light blinking, I don't know what else to do.

I got an 02 gti automatic. My low coolant light has been coming on often lately. I checked my coolant level and it was real low. I added coolant and the light didn't come back on. After a few weeks the light came back on. Again I had to add a lot of coolant..I have no leaks though. Where could all this coolant I add be going? I am not over heating or anything. Its like my car is literally drinking this and peeing it out, I have to add some almost every week now for the light to stay off.

Mk4 Jetta Gli 1.8t , car was over heating only when sitting 5+ minutes at idle, mechanic said the big fan needed replaced so he replaced it. Car still over heated so i replaced the coolant with G13. It hasn't over heated yet but got in the car this morning and the coolant light started flashing and car was telling me to STOP the car. Checked out the coolant and it was on the low side. What it may be? Leak somewhere? Bad thermostat or water pump gone bad? Timing belt and water pump were done when i bought the car when it had less than 50k miles, car now has 99k miles on it.

So this weekend my Y-fitting for the coolant hose (coming out of the reservoir) broke, literally after arriving at my friends house about 50 miles from home.
I "mended" it, and decided to try to take it home, as it is my daily. Temperature would get high, but not into the red, and drop back down. On the final rise, it got a bit too close to red for comfort. I drove about 25 miles, and my coolant light was on the majority of the time. The last 3-5 miles, my oil light came on. When I went to pull off the road, I pushed in my clutch and my car died. My first assumption was a head gasket (as I have been there before.
I open the hood and coolant is pouring out of my "mended" y-fitting. I check under the car - no oil, just coolant. The oil didn't seem to be "milky," but there seemed to be some sort of condensation on the filler cap. I checked the dipstick - not milky, just liquidy. I added some oil to the car, and had a friend bring some distilled water, and did a little bit better job of mending my fitting. I poured the distilled water in, and it started boiling almost immediately. I let the car cool for a couple hours and tried to start it, but nothing.
There's no white smoke, but the car just "puts" for a few cranks, and then it goes back to cranking. Looking around the engine housing, there doesn't seem to be any oil; but my car has a lot of grease on the block, so it's hard to say.
I did some searching, and it seems that it could be the oil cooler? I don't have the tools for a compression test, and the car was towed to a gas station, which is about 30 mins from my house.
The car is a 2004 Jetta, 1.8T Manual with the 5-speed.

Today I had planned on replacing coil No. 5 to rid myself of the rough idling and drive I've been experiencing the past couple weeks. Car is running smooth now, however, I've noticed again that coolant continues to leak at a fast pace on hot summer days.
I've always had a slight leak, about the size of a hockey puck or so if I let it sit over night. But once temps reach in the mid 80s-90s, like today in PA, the leak gets even worse. Pictured below is the amount of coolant that had dropped in about an hour span. I have attached an image and video of where I can see it dripping from. It looks like it may be a hose, but I can't tell if the coolant is just dripping on there initially from somewhere else, and then onto my driveway. I don't have a jack that I can get it high enough to check.

We have a significant coolant leak. The attached pic is of a coolant pipe which runs down from the rear of the head at the firewall. This was taken from the underside looking up.

So I'm having some problems with the oil pressure warning light beeping at me. First time it came on I stopped immeadietly, checked the oil and it was fine. (I just changed it when I got it) so I started it up again and it was fine for a few days. Then it came on again Real quick then went off. Now it comes on once or twice every trIp. I've replaced the switch already but it was still coming on so I installed an oil pressure gauge and I've confirmed my suspicions that the engine is indeed not loosing pressure. It sits at about 30ish at idle and goes up to aboit 50to 60 while driving 2-3k rpm. Yet the Damn oil light keeps blIbking. I'm assuming it has a wiring problem. Is there a way to shut this up or do I have to trace wires til I find the prob

Today was the first time my wagon has stranded me due to a mechanical issue. During city driving my coolant temp light came on so I pulled over to check it out. The fans appeared to be working, the coolant was a fair bit above the normal mark, but I'm not sure the water pump was running. I couldn't feel anything when I squeezed the top radiator hose. This is an '03 with about 50k miles on it.
I'll be taking it in Monday morning so I was curious what people's thoughts were. If it's the water pump is there anything else I should consider getting replaced while I'm at it? I'm still on the original timing belt, a change I've been delaying a long time since I drive so little so it might be time to bite the bullet and do it.

not sure if this is normal or not. usually ONLY comes when I turn my car on for the first time of the day. (cold start obviously, keep in mind its cold where i live at this time of year), there is a weird whistling like sound. goes away when the rpm gauge hits 10/ after 1 minute of the engine running. at odd times it will come on again after leaving the car off for a few hours, after work for example. I was told it because I'm using the wrong coolant??

Every now and then I get the amber light with the triangle surrounded by a circle. Then the trans starts shifting real hard. When I restart the car it goes away, but comes back every now and then. Especially when I am in traffic after a long trip.

Whilst about half way into an 8 hour drive to NYC my engine temp warning light goes off.
Blast the heater and pull over at the next closest rest stop.
No leak to be found. Looks as though the coolant level is okay Burk can't tell since the car hasn't cooled down yet. Engine bay doesn't seem crazy good. No strange smells.
Turn the car off then on and the warning turns off. I let the car cool for 20 min then back on the road. Warning comes on again on the highway.
What it could be? Possibly the thermostat? Could this fix itself?

I have a mk4 Jetta 1.8t. Problem started last night. After I drive for about 15-20 minutes the oil pressure warning light comes on. It doesn't feel any different and my oil is full. Could my pump be going bad? I hear a slight tick near the bottom of the engine on the passenger side. But the car idles fine and drives fine too.
