View 4 RepliesI have a 04 jetta 1.8t that just randomly started having some overheating issues. I just got the car two days ago, and the first day I had it I replaces the coolant temp sensor due to a check engine light. Drove 50 miles and the light shut off. Just yesterday I was sitting in traffic and noticed the temp going above 190 (which it hadn't done in the 200 miles id driven it so far). I brought it home and once I was out of traffic and moving along the temp went right back down to 190. The only time it tries to overheat is when its sitting still or at idle (after reaching operating temp). which is weird.
I was parked in my driveway and let it sit at idle for a few minutes until the temp started significantly rising. i revved it to 2000 rpm (thinking it would rise even more), but to my surprise it instantly went down to 190 again. my big fan isnt running either, but my friend said he doesn't run fans in his and that it shouldn't overheat because of the fan. also, my top hose is warm to the touch, but the bottom isn't. I know your thinking thermostat, but if that was the problem it would :
1: always overheat, or
2: never overheat.
The temp wouldn't fluctuate the way it is.
I swapped transmissions in an 01 vr6 glx automatic car. The car will start and run perfectly until it reaches operating temperature. Once it hits 190 f it shuts down and will only start again if u wait a few minutes. It has me stumped. I have unpluged the coolant temp sensor, and Have checked for vacuum leaks and loose connections but no luck.
View 1 RepliesI have a 01 1.8T and I'm looking for a little more rumble and idle noise currently my set up is a 3 inch downpipe cat less and a resanator delete into a stock muffler with modified tips, I had the downturn cut out and ran it straight out the back. Anyways my question is what muffler would you recommend that gives a nice idle and aggressive acceleration with my current set up ( the 3 inch downpipe and res delete).
View 3 RepliesJust bought a 2.0l 2001 golf four door. the previous owner had the car for only a short time. They claimed the CEL came on and the code was for the MAF. He cleaned it and when I test drove the car there was no light or sign of any issues with how the car ran. Today while figuring out why the alarm kept going off(battery died in key fob and i replaced them), it began idling rough. It had just started to rain as well. From what i could find from older thread is it could still be the MAF, TCV/ISV, or O2 sensor. Is there any good way to diagnose without a vag-com cable. Mine wont update its firmware and i'm screwed at the moment in terms of gathering info on the problem.
View 9 RepliesI have a 01 vw bora 1.8t and recently I let it sit for one day and now it has trouble starting when it's cold and when it does start it has a very rough idle and often stalls out of you try and press the gas. Once it has warmed up she runs fine. My check engine light is on but I have no way to take her down to a shop to get the codes read. What is wrong with my car? One of my friends told me it could be a cool pack or a sensor.
View 1 RepliesI have a problem I can't seem to figure out. My car has a misfire at idle. It has stumbled every once in a while at idle before while at Red lights. Now it does it all the time. Check engine light is on and I got 5 codes. P0300, p0301, p0302, p0303, p0340, and p0012. The last two are for cam position sensor. I took it outo and looked at it. Looks fine. I reinstalled it and hand cranked the motor with a meter hooked up and I am reading about 10 volts when it senses the metal ring going around. So I think that is good. I sprayed brake cleaner on all the hoses to see if the motor reved to hopefully find a vacuum leak. Nothing. I also noticed today that my cooling fans or my ac don't work. Now I have another issue to deal with. I checked all my plugs and wiring and coils also.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2004 Santa Fe, 2.7, 150,000 miles. Have had the car for a month or so. I notice that at times I am getting a strong fuel odor when sitting at idle with the windows down. Why the odor, what should I look at, and is this normal? I don't always smell it, does not have to be a full tank to smell it. No fuel leak that I can see . . . I would think the canister would capture the odor?
View 1 RepliesOnce warmed up, while sitting at a stop in Drive, there is what feels like an engine stumble every so often. Good guess is every 45-60 seconds, so it only happens once, maybe twice at long stops. There is a sudden change in pitch the engine, and the car - for lack of a better term - shudders. The thing I have noticed is that when it does this there is no indication anything has happened with the tachometer - RPMs hold perfectly steady. Additionally, there is no shudder when sitting in park or neutral, only drive.
I initially thought it might be an ignition fault, so when I replaced the balance shaft belt I also replaced the crank sensor. No change in behavior. I did some googling, which suggested the issue might be related to the EGR not closing properly. I changed all the vacuum hoses and removed the switching solenoid to test - it seems to be doing its job. I have not removed or inspected the EGR valve itself. However, because there is no symptom in engine speed and the sensation doesn't happen in park or neutral and only happens when warm, I am starting to suspect the transmission itself is the culprit - I can imagine if the torque converter quickly engaged and disengaged - and a little power made it to the wheels - the same result would happen.
There is nothing else odd about the engine or transmission. No codes. Runs like a top. Transmission always shifts perfectly. Fluid was changed two years ago, about 15,000 miles. What came out looked good as well. I'm okay with replacing EGR components, but I don't want to throw money at the problem unnecessarily. Maybe try driving around with the EGR vacuum hose pinched off or disconnected?
I recently bought a 2004 Hyundai santa fe 2.4l with 94k miles. when sitting at a idle it has a slight vibration in the cabin, feels like a slightly rough idle, when you drive the vibration is gone. I also had it throw misfire codes for cyl 2 and 4. I put in new plugs and changed the wires, coils are on the way. When the car is in drive and I put the parking brake on and walk up to the motor it sounds like it has a exhaust manifold leak, but I only hear it when in drive. I guess my question is, could this exhaust leak be causing the rough idle or will this be fixed once the new coils are on?
View 18 RepliesMy girlfriend's mk4 Jetta is having some sort of electrical issue and she's about ready to sell it. It keeps going dead after sitting. We got her a new battery a few months ago after she bought the car because it kept going dead. So it ran fine for a bit then started doing it again. Tested alternator, checks out, tested battery, bad battery, took it to local vw specialist, they confirmed bad battery, so two weeks ago, we had a new battery put in. Ran fine for a week then started going dead again. All lights turn on, just a weird clicking noise coming from inside the cabin. She also has an hid kit in it that was just redone by a different shop here. 1.8t motor.
View 2 RepliesI purchased a 2001 Jetta and it ran alright for a few days then all these problems started arising. The engine would not idle correctly and then a week later my EPC light started coming on. After all of that I have replaced the Throttle body ( Bosch) the MAF ( after market) and gas pedal ( after market). It ran fine for a day and then same issues. I had a mechanic relearn the throttle which had the Engine light go away for about a day. Now all the issues have came back. Here are the main problems.
1. Randomly lose throttle ( up hill, down hill, highway does not matter)
2. I randomly get stuck in park and cannot shift at all.
This is extremely troublesome since every time I lose throttle i have to put the car in park, shut her off and turn her back on to be able to drive. I keep getting the Throttle and MAF codes. I also checked on the recalled parts and they have already been replaced. I have read many reasons as to what would cause this but even the mechanic doesn't even know and I cant pay for him to check the electric. Also when driving if it is raining my car will not start or when it does it chugs. I was running through a puddle and after the water splashed the car basically would no longer run.
2001 VW Jetta 1.8t automatic.
Transmission has a hard time going into 1st and reverse. Also some times hits hard going into third. I have a CEL for a vehicle speed sensor? Was wondering if it's not the VSS but maybe one of the other tranny sensors?
Separate question. Same car has a rough idle issue. Occasionally stalls but intermittently runs normal always has a low idle around 600 rpm. I have a code for an injector on cylinder three.
VSS code : P0725 - engine speed sensor circuit malfunction
Injector code : P0203 - injector circuit open cyl 3
I've searched but can't find what my problem is , ON idle when clutch is not depressed loud ticking noise , but when I push the clutch in it goes away . Also the ticking noise will get louder if I accelerate . ONLY Im first gear will I hear a loud grinding noise which means I have to quickly switch into second . Sound similar to something being dragged along a fence . Again the grinding sound I'm first will only happen if I'm giving it gas. Car has 325,000 km . Something with the transmission ?
View 1 RepliesI got my 2.0 turbo project up and running. no CEL but i did have a bad o2 code but it was erased and didn't come back.
Not only is it rough idle and smoking out the exhaust but i am also getting smoke out of my catch can vent.
The smoke looks black coming out of the tailpipe but little blue after it gets out a ways from the car. Where to look??
I did just replace a piston and install a head gasket spacer. I don't know if that could be causing it some and it will go away with some driving or what?
I have not taken it out on the road as I have some brake work to finish. so mostly it idled.

Its a 01 engine code....
To start off I have replaced the MAF sensor in this car 3 times now, and have all new oxygen sensors and a new fuel pump. The most recent MAF sensor I have put in the vehichle was 2 months ago and I did it because The car would die while idling, however the mass air flow code did not show up on the cars diagnostic trouble codes. Yet this did solve the problem. The previous MAF sensor had been installed a year ago and failed on me, it was under warrantee. Now that I have installed this newest MAF sensor the car has been running fine until last month.
Since then It runs especially rough at idle and has a tendency to die when sitting for more than a minute in idle. This problem is on and off however, it can run fine one day and as soon as i start it up the next day the problem will reoccur. Now I am getting the DTC for the throttle position sensor, evaporative emission control valve, and throttle position sensor. And more recently, today the problem occurred again, the first time in a week, and now I am getting gray smoke out of the tailpipe. I would like to know if I should again, try to replace the MAF sensor, or if there is some other problem that the Sentra is prone to that I am unaware of.
When my R32 is sitting at idle with the A/C on, I occasionally get what I can only describe as a high frequency "hum" or "moan". I've tracked the noise down to what looks like a sensor or valve on the A/C system, located in the rear of the engine compartment near the left (passenger) shock tower. Turing the A/C off, blipping the throttle, or putting the A/C in "ECON" mode will make the noise go away for the most part.
Is this the thermal expansion valve? And what the heck is causing the noise? Faulty TPV? Or low A/C refrigerant charge? It's annoying as heck and scares the crap out of people near the car.
So to start off, I own a 2000 golf gls 2.0 it's got 182000 miles on it ... My rpm gauge does some thing weird intermittently. I have an exhaust on it so that's how I know this is happening.
I'll be sitting in traffic, idling, and all of a sudden my rpms go from ~900 to ~700. I start going and I shift into second and as I'm shifting the rpms fall really quickly and if I let it fall all the way it doesn't stop falling at 900 like it usually does. It goes all the way down to ~300rpms and bounces back up to 700. When it gets down to 300 the car starts shaking like it's going to stall and it barely catches itself.
My 2000 GTI VR6 has been sitting around for a while (since Oct/Nov 2013). Now the car wont turn on. Dash lights up, and no clicking noise of dead battery (actually just put in a new battery). Makes those noises when turning on, but engine never gets going.
What should I check? Battery terminals seem fine. Coilpack? Corroded terminals somewhere else?
I own a 2001 Jetta 1.8t with Gti front end. So I was driving downtown the other day and I bottomed out really hard and cracked my oil pan. I didn't realize it was cracked and leaking so I drove it home, drove fine with no issues at all. When I got home I parked it and went inside and in the morning I came out and tuned it on for maybe ten seconds. It made a really loud ticking sound that was constant and oil pressure was almost all the way down. So I shut it off and looked and saw the oil pan. I fixed the oil pan yesterday and started it up and it sounded really good and drives fine. But I've been hearing a pretty decently loud ticking sound when everything's up to temp and warmed up. The ticking is only at an idle and it drives like it use to just sounds bad at an idle. Some people think it's my oil pump and tensioner, some people thing I ruined the turbo and possibly internals.
View 4 RepliesI started noticing a strange idle when stopping or sitting at a red light. Upon stopping the car idles at around 600, then all of a sudden it jumps to around 1000-1100, and sits there as if I was giving it gas. As I drive off the car drives fine, once I stop again, the same thing repeats. This happen to me 2-3 times already within the past month, I mostly drive on the highway, so that might be a reason I don't notice it often.
