I've had this car for awhile now and it's always had this weird whining sound coming from the engine.I had the transmission serviced thinking maybe that was the sound and it wasn't. I've taken off the serpentine belt and spun all the pulleys. I can't figure it out, I'm thinking maybe timing chain but I'm not sure.
View 12 RepliesI have an 03 Santa Fe, 2.7 l AWD. Recently I've begun to notice a whining almost electric motor like sound coming from the rear of the engine. It get more noticeable the longer the trip. The weird thing is that it seems to respond to throttle input more than speed. If I'm cruising at say 65 I can ease off the throttle, reapply the throttle enough to increase RPM but not speed and hear it. I've had the differential, brakes, bearings checked. My mechanic has had it in the air 4 times and has spent atleast 4 hours on two occasions trying to find it. He can hear it. My thoughts are that it could be the Fuel Pump, or the exhaust.
View 11 RepliesOver the past week I've observed a whining sound. I've been trying to narrow it down and here is what I've got:
- It is speed related but not RPM related.
- It is not louder at any particular speed.
- It happens when coasting in neutral (manual transmission).
- The volume does not change based on whether turning or going straight.
- The pitch is mid/high, very similar to the whining from a too tight timing belt. And it gets lower and higher based on speed.
- As best as I can tell it is coming from the front driver's side.
- It is intermittent, although it's there more often than not.
- No uneven wear on front tires or other signs.
It's worth mentioning that another sound came soon after this whining. It's a sort of fluttering click sound. It becomes a lot louder when accelerating uphill. This also is speed related but not RPM related, in that the flutter/click increases in speed as the vehicle increases in speed.
I purchased a 2001 Jetta and it ran alright for a few days then all these problems started arising. The engine would not idle correctly and then a week later my EPC light started coming on. After all of that I have replaced the Throttle body ( Bosch) the MAF ( after market) and gas pedal ( after market). It ran fine for a day and then same issues. I had a mechanic relearn the throttle which had the Engine light go away for about a day. Now all the issues have came back. Here are the main problems.
1. Randomly lose throttle ( up hill, down hill, highway does not matter)
2. I randomly get stuck in park and cannot shift at all.
This is extremely troublesome since every time I lose throttle i have to put the car in park, shut her off and turn her back on to be able to drive. I keep getting the Throttle and MAF codes. I also checked on the recalled parts and they have already been replaced. I have read many reasons as to what would cause this but even the mechanic doesn't even know and I cant pay for him to check the electric. Also when driving if it is raining my car will not start or when it does it chugs. I was running through a puddle and after the water splashed the car basically would no longer run.
I own a 2001 Jetta 1.8t with Gti front end. So I was driving downtown the other day and I bottomed out really hard and cracked my oil pan. I didn't realize it was cracked and leaking so I drove it home, drove fine with no issues at all. When I got home I parked it and went inside and in the morning I came out and tuned it on for maybe ten seconds. It made a really loud ticking sound that was constant and oil pressure was almost all the way down. So I shut it off and looked and saw the oil pan. I fixed the oil pan yesterday and started it up and it sounded really good and drives fine. But I've been hearing a pretty decently loud ticking sound when everything's up to temp and warmed up. The ticking is only at an idle and it drives like it use to just sounds bad at an idle. Some people think it's my oil pump and tensioner, some people thing I ruined the turbo and possibly internals.
View 4 RepliesThis might just be car engine in general regardless of make or model, but upon a cold start, my GTI engine whines or buzzes for approximately 1 second before it stops. I had a 2009 Toyota Corolla that also did this, but I had it fixed with a TSB due to the oil not reaching the VVT-I gears or something in time. It's not the same noise in my GTI, but I was wondering about same sound almost every time upon a cold start?
View 13 RepliesSo I started getting this metallic/harmonic whining sound from my GTI's engine a few weeks ago. It was barely noticeable then, but has now gotten louder and more consistent. The sound occurs once the engine has warmed up and can be reproduced by holding the revs constant anywhere above 2k. The sound does not change in pitch with engine speed. It doesn't matter if the car is parked or moving.
I've attached a video... The sound can heard starting at 00:23 and becomes constant after a few seconds. Its hard to hear at first, but if you listen carefully its definitely there.
I have an appointment with the dealer tomorrow and will update with their findings. In the meantime, any clue as to what this could be? I can't really pinpoint where its coming from, seems loudest near where the oil filter is? By the way I'm 100% stock.
It's come to my attention that I have a thumping sound coming from my lower front end. It only happens on low rpm's and I can hear it best when it's in neutral, if I give the brakes a little push I can hear it louder, more profound, and can also feel it on my feet a little, but I don't only hear it while I have the pedal depressed. So..what it could be?
View 1 RepliesEver since I bought my 2000 mk4 golf I've had this super loud hissing noise coming from the bottom of the car. Almost like someone is spraying compressed air when your foot is on the throttle. Sound gets louder the more you depress the pedal. Had a catalytic converter code so after a few months I bought a new cat, welded it on, and the sound fairly went away. Still present, now months later the sound is now a bit louder but It's gotten on my last nerve, I want to fix it but I can't seem to figure out what that noise is.
Almost sounds like my car is a classic beetle by the way it accelerate at times. The car is sort of sluggish than normal at times, no codes, no lights, sometimes peeling out in 1st gear the car hesitates like I have regular power, then I have this sudden burst of 1 second power then back to normal until I shift then I never feel it again until I'm back in 1st and WOT it. Car does smell like gas a little sometimes, not too prevalent but nonetheless noticeable especially going in reverse. My gas meter seemed to fluctuate at times, I may have a bad pump maybe, not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I have a 2005 jetta 2.0l sedan manual transmission. I recently replaced the front shocks/struts and coil springs. I so replaced the passenger side tie rod end and the passenger side drive shaft or cv axle (not sure what its called). Everything went fine or so I thought. There is a metallic whirring sound coming from the front end and idk how to fix it. I don't even know whats wrong. I went over everything multiple times visually and could find nothing wrong. I tried three different cv axles thinking that was the cause for it and the noise remains. The first two were brand new from autozone and the last one which is still on the car is a good used oem cv axle. I took two videos of the noise....
View 3 RepliesRecently my GTI has been ticking, but it is only between 1 and 2 thousand rpm. After 2k it runs fine and doesn't make the sound. Local tuner suggested an oil pressure problem (not using the proper oil) but I am using the proper oil. It has been like this for over a month now and nothing has come of it. It is coming from the belt side of the motor and sounds like plastic ticking. Could it be a belt?
View 7 RepliesMy 01 Jetta 2.0 recently started making a grinding sound on start up! had the crank sensor and the starter changed about a month ago and everything was fine but yesterday, for absolutely no reason it would make a horrible grinding sound on start up.Not the typical one where the engine starts and 2 seconds later it screeches (I searched) but while the engine is turning over it grinds. Once it didn't turn over at all just grinding sound. It's not all the time tho either?

About a year ago I had a shop replace the strut bearings while it was in for some other things. After I picked it up my alignment was jacked and there was a binding sound coming from the front end. The shop said the sound was just the springs settling in. It did go away after a while. Still don't understand why the alignment was off but I aligned it myself and all was good for a while.
About two weeks ago I myself replaced:
Lower control arms (stock VW) and ball joints (FEQ or Lemforder, not sure which) with R32 rear bushings and poly front (I HATE poly bushings but that's for another time)
Tie rod ends (FEQ)
Front brakes & rotors (stock VW)
I also threw in a oem Audi lower stress brace while I was under there but I don't think that has anything to do with my problem. Then I took it to a shop to have an alignment done on it. Everything is now within spec except that the caster is 6.6 degrees on the left front and 6.2 degrees on the right front. How does this happen?
So now my problem: There is a fairly loud binding sound coming from the front of the car randomly. It sounds like the coil spring is binding but maybe it is something else? it mostly does it when I reverse for a bit and then put it in first and drive forward or forward then reverse so something is shifting front to back. Steering doesn't really seem to have any noticeable effect.
A few days ago I was driving on the freeway for about 20 minutes and started hearing a subtle whining sound coming somewhere from outside the car. To quickly narrow it down to the engine, a wheel or the drive train, I pushed the clutch in, took it out of 5th and waited for the RPMs to drop. Then I hit some noisy rough asphalt and couldn't tell. Oh, well.
Here's the first big clue. When I shifted back into 5th, the gear shifter went into gear with no problem, but the clutch would not re-engage despite the pedal returning to its normal position.
Here's the second clue. Since I couldn't get the clutch to re-engage I decided to try one more data-gathering action. I turned the engine off (still coasting at 70 mph) and tried to restart. It would not restart, exactly as if I had not depressed the clutch pedal. So, I coasted for as long as I could and then walked the remaining 1.5 miles.
Here's the third clue. When I got back to my car about an hour later I tried to start it again. No joy, but then I heard a click underneath the car when I released the clutch pedal. I tried once again and it started. I drove the remaining 1.5 miles to the exit and started to notice the clutch appearing to stick for a second and then suddenly release. When I got to the gas station where I was before, it was done, just like on the freeway. Again, the gear shifter and the clutch pedal operated totally fine, but it seemed that the business end of the clutch would not re-engage until it cooled off. After it cools off, everything seems to work just fine.

What should I check?
Just installed raxle on my driver side. All clicking sounds are fixed but I noticed if I take right turns sometimes you can hear a constant clunking sound coming from the driver side wheel. It doesn't happen all the time, you kinda have to turn and hit a certain angle of the steering wheel. Also, only happens when driving low, if I raise the car just a little bit its gone. Never had issues with my oem axle binding so Im not sure how exactly does the binding sound?
View 24 RepliesI have an 03 Elantra and before joining this I have never paid much attention to the sound coming from the engine but now that ive seen a few videos and looked at some threads I think the engine in my Elantra knocks a bit.

It sort of sounds like this but a little less intense. Its definitely knocking but not as loud as the video. It does it all the time, not only when its cold but when its warm too... Its always sounded like that but I haven't ever paid any attention to it.
Anyways... after a whole day of reading about gas and octane and all that fun stuff I am not sure whether to try midgrade or primium gas...
So im trying to diagnose my girlfriends issue with her car. When she starts it, the car will make a very loud rattling sound, not really grinding, but like metal on metal contact. Sometimes the sound goes away, but when the car is cold it is a guarantee. The battery light is also on, which was not the case when the rattle first started. I first thought (and hoped) it was perhaps the serpentine belt tensioner as I researched that when it fails it can make a loud rattle sound.
Once replaced, the same issues occurred. So I went ahead and put the old one back on since it was not the issue. Note that the old one and new one both shared the same tension applied to the belt and the pulley was still smooth without issues.
Using a stethoscope to try to determine the location of the rattle a bit more precisely I found the noise to be coming more from the alternator. Weird because I recently replaced it within the last year. I went ahead and removed the tension from the belt and played with the alternator for a bit. The clutch felt good when i used a screw driver to hold the fan and tried to move the pulley. One direction moved with ease while the other direction refused to budge, perfectly normal as I researched. The thing that I noticed that I thought was unusual was the fact that the shaft of the alternator had some play (Video below).
The belt has plenty of tension on it so i do not believe that it is slipping on the alternator. I push the belt with the tensioner engaged and the tensioner does not budge.
I decided to measure the voltage coming off the alternator with the car running and it was at 10.95 which im pretty sure is very low for these cars.
I test drove a new 2012 Prius Three today and heard an odd whining sound coming from the car. Seemed to be from the front area, but I'm not sure. The salesman said it was "sonar," which was added to the latest models so that pedestrians, particularly those who are hard of hearing will know you are coming.
View 16 RepliesI got my 2.0 turbo project up and running. no CEL but i did have a bad o2 code but it was erased and didn't come back.
Not only is it rough idle and smoking out the exhaust but i am also getting smoke out of my catch can vent.
The smoke looks black coming out of the tailpipe but little blue after it gets out a ways from the car. Where to look??
I did just replace a piston and install a head gasket spacer. I don't know if that could be causing it some and it will go away with some driving or what?
I have not taken it out on the road as I have some brake work to finish. so mostly it idled.

2001 Chevy impala with 2 problems. First, I get a whining sound that lasts about 1 min after the car has run for about 5 min, and as soon as the noise starts the engine temp goes up (high, but not in the red). It's not the accessory belt, revving the engine doesn't do anything and either does putting the car in neutral. I can get the tone to slightly change by turning the a/c on and off, but it doesn't stop the whining. It sounds like it is coming from the radiator fan and when I tapped the one fan the other day, the noise stopped, not sure if it was just a coincidence. Second, I get a popping noise coming from the front of the car when accelerating. I don't think it's the shocks because I compressed the shocks by bouncing on the hood and got no noise.
View 3 RepliesI just got a 2001 Jetta 1.8t 100k miles, and had some repairs done - timing belt - K03S Turbo - Forge Tip - 2.5 Turboback Exhaust. I bought the car without a working turbo, yesterday I got the car back from the shop and it was a night and day difference..... but to my point, today I had some CEL's pop - Charge Pressure control positive deviation, Pressure drop between turbo and throttle valve, and secondary Air injection system incorrect flow detected. Now I have never owned a turbocharged car before, but when my windows are rolled up and im accelerating, I can hear what I am guessing is the turbo starting to spin over by my passenger side(2k ish rpms+) except it doesn't have clean spin sounds, kinda sounds like bearings are goofed or something. This noise only happens when I am accelerating or cruising? I also have felt really no change is boost or power!!
