Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2001 - VR6 Won't Take Gas
Sep 6, 2016
Long story short, bought a 2001 GTI VR about a month ago and have been doing little fixes to get it up to snuff. Went to put gas in the other day and it took about two gallons before spitting gas back out the filler hole. Car has no codes or lights on, so I'm thinking this is a potential clogged vent tube, as the car was sitting for a few months (has spider webs all over the passenger rear wheel well). I've searched and can't find anything except for TDI related stuff.

I recently picked up an 01 jetta and the day after i bought it the check engine light came on with a 3 codes. i erased the codes and than after a day of driving the light came back on with code p0171.
I did some research and figured i should get a new air filter and clean the MAF but i was waiting until pay day.
Today, about a week later, the ASR light came on and won't come off so i ran the obd again and now there is codes P0171, P0102 so i cleared them again to see if the ASR would should off. the check engine light is off for now but the ASR came right back on when i started the car.

Decided to re use a thread I no longer needed, the problem. Was driving my 01 Jetta, cel and epc came on, would drive kind of rough (typical "replace your cool pack" question) but parked at home and when I went to drive again not a problem for two days then today no epc but the cel was flashing?.. Then again 20 mins later after parking the car it drove fine?.. I'm confused wouldn't a bad coil pack be consistent with the cel or rough idle/ driving? Would swapping around the coils work for this? Or should I try find the specific bad one and just replace it?

I have a 2001 GTI 1.8T, and it's refusing to start. It turns over and all power accessories work, so I've ruled out that the battery is dead. From the bit of research I've done, I wonder if it's a fuel issue or something to do with the coil packs. The only thing to be mentioned is that about 3 days before this occurred, I left the headlights on while I was away from the car. A quick boost and that problem was solved. I wonder if this could be related at all.

I just bought a 2001 Jetta with a VR6 with water in the gas. So far I've drained the tank (got probably 20oz of water out of the 3gal of gas) and put in fresh gas, replaced the fuel pump and the spark plugs. When I disconnect the return line I'm now getting nice clean gas but it will not fire. Although it will fire on ether. Anything else i should do? I have the full version of VCDS and am not getting any codes.

I have a '01 Jetta VR6 that wont start. Turn the ignition, all lights/radio work, 12.2 volts at battery 11.4 volts at solenoid and it doesnt even click. Replaced the starter, same thing. Have checked all fuses, everything looks good. Jumper from the solenoid to the battery and the car starts. Thoughts?

I have an 01 gti vr6 5speed... All of the sudden, i cant get the car to shift into 2nd and 4th and neutral still sits in the middle, but way back, almost where 4th should be. It seems like everything is out of alignment somehow. I parked the car, went into the store, came out of the store and drive away and the problem started. Just like that, no warning.

I have a 2001 jetta mk4 and I was thinking about getting some halo lights for it. But then I thought it would be useless because the headlights are always on regardless. So is it normal for the headlights to be on all the time? And if it is, is there a way to bypass the headlights so if I did,get halo lights, only the halos would light up?

My girlfriend recently picked up a 2.0 Jetta, had her dad drive it 800 miles with no issues except a code for needing a new thermostat. A few weeks ago, we were out for a drive getting on the freeway and all of a sudden the gas just cut out on her. Then on a separate occasion, did the same thing except this time the power steering was gone and the brakes wouldn't depress. I told her to click it into neutral and then back to drive next time it happens, so she did and then it was like nothing ever happened. Weird, right? I don't really have any leads on where this could be coming from, since it's so intermittent.

I have a standard 2001 model VW Golf 1.6L automatic. For the size of the engine it has it is pretty noisy.

I have a 2001 1.8t beetle and doing some research to buy parts I came across two different engine codes. My trunk says I have a AWV engine but the cylinder head says AWM. This is really confusing as looking them up I get three entirely different options for this car.

Even when the key is off this light is on. The rear defrosters are not getting hot, and when you turn the car on and use the defrosters the light will brighten. It happened to my car while it was sitting in the school parking lot.
The cause of this problem I assume is a short in the wires going from the c pillar to the hatch.
[URL]................
I just put the rubber cover back on them and the light turned off. Insulation on some of the wires was cracked and falling off. I will fix the wires with either electrical tape or new wires depending on the condition when I am able to do further inspection

This has been happening for awhile now, but whenever the gas gets to 1/4 tank and below (about 2 ticks from the red tick on the gauge) the car will stall for about 3 seconds then come back to life. If it happens while I'm stopped it will completely die and I'll have to restart it.

To start I was driving home the other night, car just stalled out and would not start back up, at all. Just cranks over and over. Things I have checked
- I am getting a spark from the plugs
- Fuel pump primes when key is turned on
- Fuel comes out of lines, even more so when key is switched over so pressure should be ok, I have not checked exact pressure due to not having a gauge.
- I have checked all relays under the steering wheel (just visual) some had brownish on the connectors and I cleaned all that off.
- All fuses are good and not blown (voltage meter also showed power coming to a few key fuses I checked.
I am down to a few things that I have read could be possible causes
- Camshaft Position Sensor
- Crankshaft Position Sensor
- Not sure what else to really check

New to the VW world but I am not out of my element for I am a Porsche guy. So I feel right at home. Last night I picked up a 2001 wolfy Jetta with a 1.8t on the cheap with a misfire on cylinder 4.
I have verified I have no spark on 4. I have confirmed the issue is not the spark plug, coil pack by swap and see method. My coil pack and plug work fine on another cylinder. I reset my cels and here are the new ones that pop up:
a 121 - gas pedal position sensor- doubt this would give me a no spark
a 304- Misfire on 4, (duh, like I needed to hear that)
a 030- bank one 02 -Doubt this would also give me a no spark condition)
In my testing:
I have good system voltage on the coil pack
I have good ground ohms
My signal wire is not shorted high or low
When I take V and ohm readings on the coil pack connection, either with the ign on or off they are all in line with the other sensors. So I don't think I have a wire issue.
The PO had the ECU replaced at a local dealer. I looked at the old ECU and it appears it had got wet at one point.
Im wondering if the same thing hasn't happened to the new one. however after they replaced the ECU they gave him the car back still broken. So it never ran even with the new ECU.
1 Where is the ECU?
2 What tells the ECU to fire the coil packs at the right time?

My 01 gti VR6 just started shaking pretty hard under acceleration on the front end. I'm guessing I snapped something or loosened something on launch. It was running fine on the way to the hardware store. Then I took off quickly because of oncoming traffic and suddenly it started shaking on the whole front end. I can feel it and see it from the wheel to the dashboard. It happens around 30 Mph. I picked up the car put it on jack stands and when the load is off the tires it doesn't seem to shake. Being that it happened so suddenly I am not leaning towards a bent rim or alignment. I don't see much wear to the dog mount underneath and the engine doesn't seem to rock much when revving or putting in gear so I'm not thinking much for broken engine mounts.

So I just replaced my clutch. I have a 2001 Gti vr6. It has roughly 120,000 miles and the clutch went out. I ordered a stage 1 clutch and put it in. Everything went smoothly and now I am stumped as to why I can't shift into first, third, and reverse? Second, Fourth, Fifth all work. Why this happened?

Not sure whats going on with it, but just today i checked my oil and it was bone dry so i put some in, then I noticed it leaking off the oil pan. I don't know if its coming from the oi pan or if from somewhere else. Also I've lost power had a lot of codes for too lean of air and misfires in 3 cylinders. When I accelerate I hear what sounds like a lot of air either being sucked in or let out. Also I replaced the maf cause, I saw that a lot of people fixed similar issues by changing or cleaning the maf.

I have a 2001 Golf GLS that normally starts on a dime.
It's already had replaced:
New Starter - 11/2/12Ignition Coil / Plugs - 5/22/13Rebuilt Alternator - 5/9/14New Battery - July 2015
The other day, nothing happened when trying to start her, no cranking or anything. The lights work, battery is good.
Yesterday, I depressed the clutch all way to the floor and it started.
Not sure if it's related, but I'd like to trouble shoot before I take it to a shop who's going to want to replace everything.
Car has 154,445 miles. Not original owner, so don't know how they drove it. We got it with 150k
