Started out of the blue. I stopped for gas and when I got back in the car, every little light in my instrument cluster came on and has remained on for weeks. Car runs fine - everything feels normal. Ignition switch, maybe?

I recently purchased my first car/jetta. When i switch the knob to turn on the instrument lights on my 2000 jetta the headlights don't come on. But when i turn the knob off the auto headlights turn on. Any insight on this? when i first got the car everything was working fine. It only started to happen after I replaced the radiator.
View 6 RepliesI have an oil pressure warning light on my 03' GTI 1.8t. It started as a sporadic issue, it would beep and flash for about 1-2 minutes than go away for about 20 minutes and return and repeat. I drove 130 miles on it due to an important meeting for work.
-I than changed the oil pressure sensor ( i found the old sensor housing full of oil ) and than the light stayed on after the car warmed up.
-I changed the oil pump with an OEM unit. Also changed the oil pick up- Issue still exists.
The light only comes on after 2-5 minutes of the car running. So I'm wondering if the oil is heating up and becoming less viscous than not allowing the pump to pump it as well or the sensor not picking it up.
I have oil and am not leaking it. I'm confused on what it could now be. I'm having it towed to my buddy's shop for him to take a gander when he gets a chance.I'm wondering if the cluster itself is bad.
I have an automatic (ugh) 2002 Jetta 1.8T that is displaying some fun stuff. My kneejerk reaction is that the ECU is croaking but wanted to run it by some people with more experience/smarts.
Here's the deal. I don't get any codes, ever. Sometimes, when I turn the ignition to on (Before starting) all of my warning lights are dim and will flicker, and the gear indicator at the bottom of the cluster rapidly switches between each gear. If I start the car like this, I can hear the shift lock randomly engaging and disengaging. If I actually try to drive, it'll shift hard into reverse, shift normally into drive, and then drive in limp mode. I only drove this way three times before figuring out the next bit. Each time, either the traction control or air bag warning lights came on and stayed on.
I've noticed that if I turn the ignition to "on" and it's acting up, all I have to do is leave it on for a few seconds, turn the ignition back off, and turn it back on; sometimes it'll take 2-3 tries but it always seems to work. Then the warning lights come on bright and steady, the car starts like normal, and drives great.
So, is it the ECU? Is it demons?
Just started happening today. Dash cluster beeps, all warning lights flash, then gauges and lights go dead while under acceleration or cruising. Upon stop and return to idle the dash starts to operate properly until I take my foot off the brake pedal and start to accelerate. Tried searching and didn't find anything. What are the possible causes?
View 6 RepliesPutting a magnaflow muffler on the 99.5 2.0 slow jetta on Wednesday and I realized I don't have a rear GLI lip. Any single turn down extension off a muffler ? Or just run a straight pipe off the muffler ? Clearance with the rear lip issues ?
View 4 Replies2000 jetta 1.8t ... Yesterday driving home from work (1.5 hr drive and it was 25+ degrees) my car died on the highway just before I made it home. Just lost power all of a sudden with no warning signs before and no overheating. No lights came on I just felt sudden loss of power and pulled over and turned the ignition off and it wouldn't start again. Just makes a high pitched whining noise and won't crank over. I just found out the other day that both O2 sensors need replacing but I can't see that being the reason.

Pretty much every time I back up and turn, I hear one loud, single pop from the front end. Occasionally, it will happen when I start forward from a stop (if turning) but that's it. It never happens at any other time. I can't decide if it's suspension or steering related. Where could this be coming from?
I have gone through the front end thoroughly and the only issue I find is my passenger inner CV boot has begun to crack and has lost some grease. I would expect a CV failure to click anytime I'm moving and turning. Again, I never hear this noise under any other circumstances.
Our Daughter has added a 3rd Jetta to the family, A 2002 2.0 5 Sp with 123K. Runs like a top...looks great and figured a deal @ $2300... The man used it as a daily driver with about 3 mile run to work.... Oil was black, a little low, and the white sludge on the cap....Oil changed with synthetic (not sure what he was using) added thermostat and temp sensor to fix the cold running codes...and 2000K miles without a flaw.....
Until her oil light flashes and chimes....and she is 2 qts low....
Not a single indication of a leak found, overflow tank is clean, no smoke and the exhaust pipe appears normal, so I'm scratching my head now....
12v vr6 in my 2000 jetta. 174,000 miles, just recently got it, has cel and couple other lights, and the obd2 scanner I have will not work on it. Car wants to die after a big rev, and sometimes while driving. Not sure what the problem could be.
Will be taking it to autozone to see if the scanner works.
Both left and right tail lights don't work but brake lights and reverse work fine. Fuses look good and bulbs are fine. Could it be related to the 'circuit board' type housing that the bulbs are in? If it is, are they in series meaning if one goes bad the other side won't work either?
View 1 RepliesSo I drove my car about a mile to a friend's house and when I went to start it back up 10 minutes later, I got no start and no crank. Just a single loud relay click from the engine compartment. Tow truck tried jumping it and then thwacking the starter solenoid to try and get it going. No dice. Battery seems all good.
Had some interesting things go wrong the day before which may be related to it. First, I was tracking my MPG and fuel trim on a highway trip and the trim and fuel consumption data just stopped coming in. Speedo and RPM data was still coming down the OBDII but I just assumed that my reader took a ****. Later that night I noticed that the lights on my climate control (the manual kind) went out. Tapped on it and it came back on, but only briefly. The bulb looks shot.
No engine strangeness on the drive over or earlier in the day. I drive it most every day. Has 215,000 miles on it.
I'm guessing either a short or bad starter. FWIW, I've also been experiencing the typical starter whine after starting. Was meaning to take it off and grease it. Not sure that has anything to do with it. I also tried rotating the crankshaft to make sure the engine wasn't locked up and it does turn, albeit not incredibly easily. It does have oil on the dipstick.
I've noticed that my turn signals/hazard indicators don't flash on my car when I release the trunk or lock and unlock the doors. I have 2 friends, one with a 2000 like mine and one with a 99.5 that do, and all the newer models I encountered at the car lot I used to work at did as well. I always figured it was a mid run model revision until I noticed my one friend's doing it, then I noticed the other.
View 9 RepliesTwice now in the past week, my 2001 Jetta has become possessed. While driving along, the radio turns off. Then the warning lights all come on. If I use the turn signal the radio springs back to life and other weird electrical things happen. Eventually the car stalls. When I try to restart it, the warning lights all come on and the dashboard makes a click-click-clicking sound, and that's it. The first time, my mechanic said the alternator wasn't working correctly, but that he revved the engine and it kicked in. He then tested the alternator and battery and said both were ok. Is this an alternator problem? Something else?

View 3 RepliesSo I'm having some problems with the oil pressure warning light beeping at me. First time it came on I stopped immeadietly, checked the oil and it was fine. (I just changed it when I got it) so I started it up again and it was fine for a few days. Then it came on again Real quick then went off. Now it comes on once or twice every trIp. I've replaced the switch already but it was still coming on so I installed an oil pressure gauge and I've confirmed my suspicions that the engine is indeed not loosing pressure. It sits at about 30ish at idle and goes up to aboit 50to 60 while driving 2-3k rpm. Yet the Damn oil light keeps blIbking. I'm assuming it has a wiring problem. Is there a way to shut this up or do I have to trace wires til I find the prob
View 4 RepliesOn New Years day the water pump on my Golf MK4 broke and all coolant leaked out. I had that replaced together with the cam belt. When I got the car back, the next day when the car was starting from cold I noticed it was very rough when idle, car about to stall then RPM jumps, drops and jumps up again. I drove for a minute and when stopped at some lights, the car juddered and "Emissions Workshop" warning came up along with 'ECU / engine warning light' and 'Brake system / brake fluid warning light'. Drove a couple more minutes and all warnings disappeared. Was fine for rest of the day.
Same thing happened the next morning. Once warmed up it is fine for the rest of the day unless the car is left undriven long enough for it to be completely cold. I know nothing about cars so have relied on my local garage. I was told the diagnostics reported a fault with the coil pack so had that changed along with plugs and leads. The next morning the same problem was still there. Then told could be coolant temperature sensor so had that replaced too. Still same problem.
The warning buzzer to indicate the lights are on when the car is off is not working. I assume there is a switch in the key ignition. Is that the likely part to fail?
View 4 RepliesEvery now and then I get the amber light with the triangle surrounded by a circle. Then the trans starts shifting real hard. When I restart the car it goes away, but comes back every now and then. Especially when I am in traffic after a long trip.

But just a few days ago it started making a tone when I leave the lights on. Is there some way to turn that feature on and off, or was something wrong that mysteriously healed itself?
View 3 RepliesFlashed to 1.5 v8.1 91 and had no issues with flash. Then tried to start car and all warning lights on and no start. Flashed back to Performance Pack stock version and again no issues with flash, but same problem, warning lights and dead car. Disconnected battery and reconnected without any change.
