Automatic 1998 Golf 4 1.8L 20V shakes so badly to a point where the engine stops totally when I put it on reverse,and on drive sometimes. What might be causing this.. I recently replaced the gearbox oil with a new one..the car was fine before this change of gear box oil

I took off the linkage from the engine bay and can only manually get the car to go into reverse ... Feels like it can't change "levels" ... Don't think it's clutch since because the car won't engage a gear even with the car off ...
Tried searching and no luck ... Thinking shift forks but hoping not since don't want to drop the transmission and it could be something else ...
I'm just having a mis-alignment for my gearing reverse is replaced as first and I have no second gear not reverse only 1-3-4-5 gears are being entered what can I do to fix this...
View 2 RepliesSo I just replaced my clutch. I have a 2001 Gti vr6. It has roughly 120,000 miles and the clutch went out. I ordered a stage 1 clutch and put it in. Everything went smoothly and now I am stumped as to why I can't shift into first, third, and reverse? Second, Fourth, Fifth all work. Why this happened?
View 8 RepliesDrove my 02 VW golf GL to the airport, it sat there for 4 days, drove it back home. Next day I noticed that my 1st gear and reverse are very hard to get into. So I kept messing around with it and noticed that if I tried to put it slowly into first gear that there was no way in hell it would go, it felt like the gear was closed.
But if I put it into second gear and push it from second gear into first gear it goes back into first gear about 70% of the time. And it will also go into first gear if I push my stick down as if I'm attempting to go into reverse, and slowly move it into 1st gear.
The reverse is also very hard to get into it feels just like the 1st gear does when you try to do it slowly, it's like it's closed off/blocked. Latest work that was done to the car, replaced the clutch about 4-5 months ago.
I have an 04 Jetta 1.8T that I recently acquired and have a problem with a noisy manual tranny. Reverse is a bit noisy (more than usual) and when I get on it in 1st and 2nd gear it sounds like an awful whining noise. I have been told it could be either a bad throw out bearing or input bearing? BTW this thing shift perfect, like butter, no grinding at all.
View 4 RepliesI started my car the other day and found that it only drives the first gear and I can also put it in reverse. VCDS gave me a 00281 code saying no signal from Vehicle Speed Sensor G68. I replaced the sensor, but it still doesn't go into gear beyond 1st.
VCDS gives me the following codes after replacing G68.
2 Faults Found:
00652 - Gear Monitoring
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
00281 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (G68)
03-00 - No Signal
I came across TSB 01-99-02 which says something about the codes being incorrect. It seemed a little vague about whether it is actually G38 or G22. I don't want to buy more sensors only to have it be something else. The speedometer and tach work fine so G22 doesn't seem likely to me.
The VCDS site says it could be several things including bad G68 or G38 sensor, low fluid & bad valve body. Was it the G38 sensor?
98 Jetta TDI hydraulic system ... We just received this vehicle from my mother in law, who is not driving any more. It's a cream puff--79,000 miles, beautiful condition. Problem is the clutch engages lower and lower to the floor, and eventually the shifter gets stuck in gear. The brake pedal slowly sinks to the floor when at stops on hills. Our mechanic tells us these two are connected because both the clutch and brake run off the same hydraulic system.
1st time he said the fluid was filthy, and he emptied the system and put in clean fluid. Worked for a little while and then we were back where we started. Second time he replaced a couple parts on the clutch, replaced this fluid, and this time it ran like a dream for a little over a month. Then the problem just returned. Again he says the fluid is filthy, and now we are looking at replacing the master cylinder and again changing the fluid. The theory behind why this is happening is that my mother in law let the car sit for half a year before passing it on to us. She didn't do much driving the 6 months before that either. I've done research, and this doesn't appear to be a common problem by any means on these cars.
I have a problem with that, when i'm in a low height with my car, i turn right and the hole car vibrates, like rubbing in the axle, its no heating the frame, both sides are new, i change because of that, check everything, also change engine mount, top mounts are camber plates, running bags over coil, and all suspension its new. only part thats original are the front bearings, can be the bearings?

View 1 RepliesI have a Golf GTI IV 1.8T Tiptronic and having this problem when the car is Idling i can feel the engine vibrations trough the seat and are anything but soft, especially if the trany is neutral and less if leave it in D.
I've changed the dog bone recently, wich was very bad, but the vibrations didn't smooth they remain the same but the driving improved, so the dog did replacement was good.
The next step would change the engine mounts, but they look goof and I don't want to start change parts just in case. Where I live car parts aren't cheap and some times new ones are just crap.
I have a problem with my 1998 Chevrolet Blazer. It won't go in reverse, but will go into gear going forward. I don't know whats wrong or what the cause is.

I know you probably thinking its the driver. I've owned the car since 2012 and have only put on 46000 kms.
The rotors vibrate and have that weird stop and go hesitation when braking.
Is it simply OEM or nothing?
I have a issue with my golf 1.9tdi when i start the engine it shakes really bad and feels very rough when sitting in the cab steering wheel vibrates really Bad and engine looks like its going to fly out of the car but when i apply throttle the vibrations go only happens when idling.
What it could be i have done a Diesel Purge, changed the fuel filter, cleaner the EGR Valve, changed the coolant temp sensor, checked the injector loom for continuity and resistance everything was fine, checked resistance on injectors readings was all the same, flywheel seems fine when running (no movement) and no change when i dip the clutch, engine mounts i changed the right hand side one all the rest are fine and not penetrated.
I drive a 2005 Jetta IV 1.8T R-line. The engine shakes/vibrates at Idle and when I drive.
Also when if I drive at high speeds when I stopped the engine just switches off when idling.
What could be the cause?
I got a 99' Jetta gls 5 spd. I just replaced the transmission and now the car won't engage reverse from inside the cockpit. Reverse can be engage from inside the engine bay, but when the shift knob is depressed nothing happens. Linkag cables are in the correct spots.
View 6 RepliesI am looking over a 1998 Ford Ranger. Very low miles for its age (67,000) and kept in very good shape. When I took it for a drive, I noted an issue.
- there's a whining sound in first gear and reverse that varies according to the engine RPMs. I thought it might be the power steering pump, as that whined when I turned the wheel.
However, the noise went away when I shifted to the higher gears. Been a while since I drove a stick - my Bug back in 2003, IIRC.
What I might be getting into? I really like this machine, aside from that issue, and I would like to nail the problem down ASAP...
93000 miles 5 speed manual transmission only lets me use 2,3 and reverse gear. I took good care of that car and dont think transmission should go out that soon/
View 7 RepliesI have a '98 Saturn SL2(?) and it's loud. My dad bought it for me at an auction 2 years ago and I haven't had any major problems with the car minus the loudness. The only thing that's been replaced is the radiator but the car was loud before that. And by "loud" I mean that the engine runs pretty loud. One of my older brothers told me before that my car sounds like a tank. It does get quieter as I drive the car more but still overall pretty loud. Also, my car vibrates sometimes- varying from a small vibrating noise to vibrations strong enough to vibrate my rear view mirror.
Now I haven't had any major problems with the car (as I mentioned before) and I'm wondering if I'm just used to my parents having quiet cars and the loudness is no big deal. I might need this car for a fairly long drive soon and hope that maybe my car is just meant to be louder than most.

The problem: Very hard to get a smooth shift from gear to gear. Trust me, I know how to drive, but I can always feel the car shifting into a different gear if you know what I'm saying. On my friend's bone stock Jetta, I just let the clutch out without gas in between shifts and you don't feel a thing.
On my car, you feel EVERYTHING. People have told me the light flywheel will make the ride more uncomfortable in many ways, especially since the RPMs drop much quicker in between shifts than stock.
So this morning before the days driving event for work, myself along with a few other people were doing laps on our course trying to get the best time. I messed up two launches and didn't think much of it (except for being terrible at launching). Later on after participants started showing up we put our cars away. I tried to back into my spot and my car wont go into reverse now. I can push the gear lever down and move it over to reverse but the transmission wont go into reverse.
