Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 1.8t Turbo - Hissing Sound When Accelerating
Dec 9, 2015
There's this 1.8t gti I'm buying this week from a family member and we've been trying to solve an issue that we ran into. When accelerating the car there is a hissing noise, safe to say that it is air. Then when accelerating a little harder and you feel the turbo pulling you everything seems fine. But a second or so after , the turbo dies off and so does the hissing noise. Then I can let go of the gas and repeat the process and it happens again.
My issue is that I cant figure it out since I Need to be driving to hear the hissing and the turbo cut off. I looked around the threads but nothing really seems to match my issue. No codes either. On top of that I've never owned a 1.8t and don't know much about its turbo.

2004 Jetta GLI - I am getting a hissing sound when accelerating. Could it be the Turbo?

I have a 2005 F250 with 186K miles. I do minor work on my vehicles but have little experience working on my diesel. I was accelerating when I heard a pop and a hiss similar to disconnecting an air hose from an air compressor. Total loss of turbo power. No turbo reading on the turbo gauge on dash. No loss of oil. No smoke. Oil and coolant look fine. Took off turbo and everything appeared to operate like it should (according to YouTube videos). Inspected lines and rubber boots.
Rubber has some cracks but not certain if they are holes. How small/large of a hole would cause total loss? Was originally scared to take it to a shop knowing they could name their price. Not opposed to taking it somewhere now knowing the turbo works but obviously would rather save the money. Any tips on troubleshooting? I'm not opposed to proactively replacing parts/sensors as the truck has given me 186k and I plan to keep it as long as possible.

yesterday my r began making a new buzzing sound when accelerating. ive researched and i guess it does somewhat sound like a quick blow into a harmonica. I am pretty aware of the sounds my car makes and am sure that this is completely new. the noise only occurs under load around 2800-3000 when boost comes on and then things go back to normal.
i have been tuned UM stage 1 since july and have never experienced this noise before yesterday.

Ever since I bought my 2000 mk4 golf I've had this super loud hissing noise coming from the bottom of the car. Almost like someone is spraying compressed air when your foot is on the throttle. Sound gets louder the more you depress the pedal. Had a catalytic converter code so after a few months I bought a new cat, welded it on, and the sound fairly went away. Still present, now months later the sound is now a bit louder but It's gotten on my last nerve, I want to fix it but I can't seem to figure out what that noise is.
Almost sounds like my car is a classic beetle by the way it accelerate at times. The car is sort of sluggish than normal at times, no codes, no lights, sometimes peeling out in 1st gear the car hesitates like I have regular power, then I have this sudden burst of 1 second power then back to normal until I shift then I never feel it again until I'm back in 1st and WOT it. Car does smell like gas a little sometimes, not too prevalent but nonetheless noticeable especially going in reverse. My gas meter seemed to fluctuate at times, I may have a bad pump maybe, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

So, I have a 2005 gti 1.8t, has 110k on it, just did a 3" straight pipe, and while a buddy and I were installing my new pipe, and straight pipe, he said my turbo seals were going bad. I could get the k04 cause it handles better, or get a rebuild kit. Well, today when I give it throttle, it almost makes a knocking sound from the turbo? Not from the front of the car, but at the end of straight pipe, you can hear it in that constant spool. What could this be? Time for the k04. Car has unitronic stage 2, so it gets ran hard sometimes.

I've been noticing over the past few weeks that in the 1,5-3k RPM range, usually more under load (e.g. going up a hill, in traffic) that the turbo sounds like its venting boost more/earlier. It's normal acceleration too, not WOT!
Now, I might not have recognized normally, but my girlfriend's MKIV 1,8t just exhibited the same sound (more noticeable), and it turned out to be the hose to the "pancake pipe"/intercooler came loose. It's kind of the same "hissing" that you would hear if a DV/hooter valve is bad.
I know what the normal "pssst" when taking the foot off the gas should sound like. And that happens at highway speeds and normal acceleration.
So, before I bring it in - is something like this normal on the MKVI 2,0? Is it supposed to be venting to atmosphere during that higher-load acceleration, like going up a hill? Once we got her 1,8t fixed, it doesn't make a sound other than normal turbo pressure release at expected times.

My car is Stage 2+ (mods are in signature). I noticed today a hissing noise coming from the rear of the car when my music was turned off. The sound is very similar to turbo spool but I'm 100% positive it is coming from the rear of the car not the bay. The noise does not show up until I hit 3rd gear and from then up it only makes noise when I'm accelerating. Under any load the noise stays the same. I can accelerate slow or accelerate a little harder and the hissing noise remains constant. The only two things that I can think of are the flapper valve on the SPM exhaust and the rear diff. However, I don't see why the flapper valve on SPM's exhaust would be affected by a certain gear.

So my 2001 SF GLS (220,000 km) has developed a quiet hiss on the RHS that's only present when I go above above about 2000 rpm while accelerating. Starts and stops instantly with the gas pedal. Maybe some crap in the fuel line? It doesn't seem to affect performance, but it could be a sign of something developing.

I was driving down the road tonight and have been hearing a hissing sound when accelerating and when I went out to get it audio of it to send to the VW dealer, I heard a loud noise, and now it sounds like I don't have an exhaust, the rpms aren't raising no where near what they should be, and have a gaseous smell.

I just got a 2001 Jetta 1.8t 100k miles, and had some repairs done - timing belt - K03S Turbo - Forge Tip - 2.5 Turboback Exhaust. I bought the car without a working turbo, yesterday I got the car back from the shop and it was a night and day difference..... but to my point, today I had some CEL's pop - Charge Pressure control positive deviation, Pressure drop between turbo and throttle valve, and secondary Air injection system incorrect flow detected. Now I have never owned a turbocharged car before, but when my windows are rolled up and im accelerating, I can hear what I am guessing is the turbo starting to spin over by my passenger side(2k ish rpms+) except it doesn't have clean spin sounds, kinda sounds like bearings are goofed or something. This noise only happens when I am accelerating or cruising? I also have felt really no change is boost or power!!

Quick q recently just got a gli and I've noticed a knocking sound when accelerating and shifting from stops could this be my motor mounts ? I was thinking my tranny or clutch but everything runs smooth and goes into gear fine...

Have a Whistling or hissing sound while accelerating? My 2015 6.2 seems to make this sound while under load. I took to dealer and they claim its the throttle plates not closing all the way. Claims this is normal, but to me it is annoying. Just would like to know what others think.

A clunk sound coming from the front end. Drivers side and Passenger side. Not really a metal on metal sound. The problem started after coilover install. The sound occurs while braking and accelerating over bumps. So what I've replaced:
-Strut Mounts and Bearings
-Lower control arm bushings (R32 bushings)
-Drivers Side CV axle
What I've checked:
-Tie rod ends have no play
-Ball joints have no play.
-I have no sway bar, so not the sway bar bushings.
-Its not the axle hitting the frame.
Could possibly be the dog bone mount but when I installed the 1' motor mounts I saw no issue but could possibly be the bushing. feel the clunk in my foot as well.

I got my R flashed about a month ago and decided to do a little run 2 days ago at my local track (BYW I am APR stage 1+) Because I thought the software removed the speed limiter of 125 MPH, I was suprised when car got to 135 and completely stopped accelerating. When I slowed down, it was like the car had no turbo. I would press on the gas and it would barely move.
Idk if it was the turbo or the software. When I stopped I turned off the car and turned it right back on and BOOM, it was back to normal. So yesterday, the same thing happened at 110 MPH and I restarted it and everything was back to normal but now the Engine Malfunction Light is on but everything is working fine.

2002 Jetta 2.0 4-speed auto - 151,xxx miles.
Symptom: when driving, occasionally there is what I can only describe as a fairly loud (but not overwhelming - radio easily drowns it out) hissing+buzzing noise. It's a bit like listening to a small plastic gear grind at a very high speed with a bit of a hissing as a backdrop. It only happens occasionally, and I haven't identified any glaring rhyme or reason to when it happens.
What I can say is I've observed it around shifts on fairly strong acceleration, I've observed it climbing long hills, and I've observed it when cruising ~60mph on the freeway. It SEEMS like it is sensitive to the gas pedal - when I hear it, if I depress the pedal more and accelerate I tend to move beyond it, but if I let the pedal off and decelerate (thinking of the 60 mph freeway case here) I can bring the sound back. And if I continue to decelerate we move past the noise.
So, I can't really tell if it is RPMs, or speed, or engine load, or...
A little about my history with the car: I bought it only 2,000 miles ago, so I can't say much about what is "normal" or has been going on for how long.
A little about the transmission - I know they have a very bad rep. I had the trans fluid changed with the correct type right after purchase. It generally shifts ok. There are occasional delays going from reverse into D, and sometimes shifts on acceleration are less elegant than you'd hope, but it seems to generally function as a 4-speed transmission ought to.
This noise is something failing, and given that seems to relate in some way to speeds/loads/possibly shifts I hope this isn't a sign the transmission is going to suddenly give out.

My car has been making a hissing sound when I turn it off for the past few weeks, I checked the hoses around the intake manifold and they all look to be attached fine.
I took a video and discovered a flex in the rear of my manifold..is this normal? What would be the common issue?
Look at the rear of the barcode label

I'm hearing a weird mix of hissing and ticking sounds.
I captured ONE loop of the sound on video, the sound loops and loops and loops at idle.
My car has just under 40k miles on it. I was wondering if this sound is normal at idle? Or if I should get it checked out.

I have a 2002 Jetta GLS 2.0 4-speed automatic, 151,xxx miles... I have only owned it a couple of thousand miles, so I can't offer much on what is "normal"...
The issue I am having is as follows: I sometimes get a strange buzzing/hissing noise that sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment ~45 degrees to my right while driving. It's very hard to describe - the best I can say is it sounds a bit like a little plastic gear is spinning/grinding at high rpms, yielding a buzzing noise, and there is a hissing-like sound as a backdrop.
The sound happens only occasionally (but seems to be happening much more frequently, which is worrisome). I have heard the sound in different driving scenarios, so I can't say "it only happens when...". However, it DOES seem to be sensitive to throttle and driving conditions in some way. I have heard it while a shift is taking place, I have heard it under load on a long incline, and I tend to hear it right around 60mph. Interestingly, in the 60mph example, can make the sound go away by accelerating past 65, or by decelerating down to ~50... it seems like there is some kind of transition taking place at 60 that fosters the sound?
The transmission is generally functional - I had the fluid changed right after buying it (with the correct fluid), and it generally shifts ok. It does have some of the quirky behavior the transmission is known for: occasionally hesitates to go from R to D, sometimes shifts while driving are less subtle than they should be. But I'd say as a whole it operates as a 4-speed transmission would be expected to.
However, since this strange noise is getting worse, and seems to be related to shifts/load/andor speed in some way... I am worried about trans health. What to check? Because it is intermittent, and doesn't exist at idle and rarely appears when going around the block good luck getting a mechanic to observe it...

I installed a usp test pipe a while back and I noticed a hissing sound coming out from my cluster right after the install. I have seemed to ignore the sound but now its getting to me.
