The whirring noise from the back of the car, like a servo motor maybe. Often happens several times after parking and shutting down engine.

View 7 Replies2006 Ford Focus with an ongoing wheel bearing issue. Earlier this year I heard a repetitive whirring noise from the back right, figured it was a bearing, brought the car in for repair. The shop confirmed and replaced the bearing.
3 months later, I heard the same noise. I brought the car to a different shop (I had moved since) and they confirmed that it was the same wheel bearing that had just been replaced. They said it may have been faulty. They attempted to repair it, but the noise persisted. They actually ended up putting the new bearing on the driver's side rear and swapping out the old bearing that was on the driver's side with old one on the passenger's, which is the only way they could get the noise to stop entirely. (This confused me)
Fast forward two months and the noise is back on the same side - passenger's rear. The shop is telling me that it is unrelated since the new bearing was technically put on the other side, however, I am thinking that the same thing keeps happening whenever any bearing is put in the same spot (passenger rear). My question is as follows - what could be happening in the passenger rear that would cause bearings to continually fail?
My fiance drives a 2006 Escapse XLT v6 AWD. It's really a great car.
She noticed an issue when she filled the fuel tank the last time. It took about 8 miles of driving for the gauge to read full after being filled from empty. She also told me there was a "whirring" noise when shutting off the car and turning it back on. I checked it out and found the fuel gauge is making a noise. Whenever you shut it off or turn it on and the needle moves there is a distinct whirring noise that sounds like dirty plastic gears meshing, which is what I'm assuming is the issue.
I've done a search and came up with 0 results. Can the cluster be disassembled and possibly just clean the gears?
2011, GTI MKVI, 36000 Miles. A whirring noise began to occur at about 33,000. I took it into a dealership. They concluded that it was tire noise. So I lived with it for a little while, then replaced all 4 tires with Nitto Motivo (so not an overly aggressive tread). Got the car out on the highway and I'm getting the same noise. Took it in to another dealership, they thought tire noise, but I had informed them that all 4 tires were replaced two days before. Now they are scratching their heads. When I brake between the speeds that the noise occurs I get a slight vibration in the brake pedal. You can feel it in the floor boards, but not in the steering wheel. The noise is coming from the front passenger side.
Fortunately I took it in before exceeding 36k miles, so they kept the ticket open until this is solved. I have read in other threads that people have had similar problems, but they generally have gone away after replacing tires. Could it be a wheel bearing?
I got a 2015 GTI Autobahn, DSG, 5 door. Took delivery in early June. Love the car, has been amazing so far. Coming from an MKV GTI, a nice bump in power. One issue I've had is that I hear a noise coming when accelerating. It's almost like a 'whirring' noise. Not sure if this is what the new EA888 sounds like. I didn't notice this from the old MKV. I don't think it's a turbo whistle...I'm not going very fast. The car is in D when it happens. anything faster than 60km/h (40mph), I don't hear the noise, just 'normal' engine noise.
Is this how just MKVII's sound? I bought the car without test driving it...so not sure if this is an expected sound?
Have a whirring/wheel bearing metallic rubbing noise at 70-80 mph, 6th gear (manual transmission). It's hard to pinpoint the location but it's from the engine area! I heard about water pump failures but thought I'd hear that all the time not just at speed... MKVI GTI ...
View 15 RepliesI heard this noise on my mkIV GTI as well. When I unlock and open the car in the AM I hear a strange "whirring" sound. It sounds like a cell phone vibrating on a hard surface. I don't think anything is broken since it has done this on two different cars. I just want to know what it is. The sound happens as soon as I open the driver-side door.
View 4 RepliesAbout a week ago I noticed this weird noise that sounds like it's coming from inside of the center vents area/console.
The noise definitely only occurs when moving, or at least it seems that way. At idle there is no sound. The sound seems to get a little louder the faster I go.
It's kind of a "whirring" sound. It's not really loud and if someone that had never been in the car were driving they probably wouldn't even notice it. It almost sounds as if I have the heating/ac fan turned up high but I don't. The sound appears even if I have the heat/ac fan off.The heat/ac works fine.
It may have nothing to do with the heat/ac but I'm wondering if something could have got stuck in the vents from outside?
What I have happening is clunking that can be felt in the pedals and dead pedal at random time. Bad vibration can be felt through the cabin but this is hard to quantify since I already had VF mounts, I'm lowered on PSS9's, have camber plates, etc etc. It just seems to me that the vibration has gotten worse than the "normal" vibration these mods would introduce. Whirring/rotational noise that comes and goes and seems to be right in front of the the driver's seat. It also sometimes seems to go away if I am cruising down the road and I push the clutch in.
Crunching noise (almost like a CV joint which is shot) but this noise appears randomly at various speeds and when driving straight. All of this is pointing me more and more towards a tranny problem which is not what I want to hear but I also don't want to keep driving my car without knowing what is wrong with it. One note is I did install the trans shim, replaced black cap on end of trans in Feb and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary at that time
I have pulled the driver's axle 3 times in the last month and can find nothing wrong with it. I have pulled the suspension apart on the entire front end and found/see nothing. I have pulled, twisted, shaken, etc everything looking for bad or worn parts/bushings and can find nothing.
My car has ~2500km on it now and I've noticed a whirring / knocking noise from the left side of the car Mk6 GTI. It's not loud (in fact, hardly audible at times) but it's there. It's most noticeable when I am driving slowly (~30km/h) at low rpms (1500rpm).
It's only when the car is in motion that I can hear the noise. I revved the engine in neutral and could not re-produce the noise.
I've tried adjusting the tire pressure but that didn't seem to work. It was at 38 psi and now at 40 psi. No diff in the noise level.
It sounds like a knocking (like two plastic tubes hitting each other) /whirring noise but I cannot pinpoint the source...or whether it's even under the car or the engine...but it's definitely the left side.

I have a new issue developing on the clutch of my car. When I fully press the clutch pedal to change gear, I hear cacophony of grinding, hissing and whirring noise, probably coming from gearbox. When I take my foot off of the clutch pedal completely, the noise is gone. half clutch has reduced amount of these noises. I had this symptom briefly one night two weeks ago and when I topped up oil, this was gone. Tonight, it is back.
Went down to my garage after the Prius had been off for at least 5 hours and heard a whirring kind of like a fan in the back half of the vehicle. I had never heard this before and it went on for at least 5 minutes then quit. My garage was probably around 60 degrees for most of that time, fwiw. Seems like the area of the battery fan but why would that need to run?
View 2 RepliesHearing a clicking noise as the needles sleep back after their start up dance. Dealer claiming it is normal ..
View 2 RepliesHearing a definite (and quite annoying) clicking sound as the needles sweep back from the start up. Dealer says it is normal. How difficult is it to turn it off?
View 7 RepliesIs it normal to have this rattle noise that is coming from the CAI which i never noticed before? This only happened after installing a turbo back and car runs fine. It just sounded like marble got sucked in the intake or 2 thick plates banging. I am pretty sure its not the heat shield for the filter also because i tried holding that and looked at that part. Went under the car too but i cant pinpoint where its coming from but maybe inside the engine?
[URL] ....
I also got a pronounce rattling at 2000 rpm when I let go of the gas that's located maybe at the bottom passenger side. I am thinking fuel lines?
Was just driving home from a little weekend trip in the R, and all of a sudden this horrible screeching noise started from what sounded like the back passenger side tire, we stopped and looked and nothing seemed to be stuck in there dragging, a few miles later it just stopped...
View 3 RepliesMy 2010 GTI, which I bought in April of this year, has begun to rattle, mainly coming from the back part of the vehicle. I have taken it twice to the local dealer and of course this rattle mytsteriously goes away when they take it out on a road test.
One rattle area seems to be coming from the sunglass holder (sidenote: why the hell would they design them so bloody small? I mean, they barely hold any kind of sunglasses), but the main rattle is definitely coming from the back, possibly trunk area.
This is my first VW and I have been told the nature of a VW in the winter is that it rattles.
The other day, I had the wipers going, every time when they went back down to the "rest" position, they made this weird movement with loud noises, JUST want to make sure that it is normal, seeking some feedback before going to the dealer.
View 14 RepliesCar has been making da da da da da noise from the rear for the past week or 2. The noise is consistent with the wheel speed and I can heard it clearly when I am next to barrier or a truck or something the sound will pounce off it. I drop the car off, later they told me the drive shaft is vibrating a lot and it might go.
View 8 RepliesMy girlfriends 2010 Golf 2.5 is worrying me. We went on a weekend vacation to Boston so the car sat for 3 days. I go to turn it on tonight and it just immediately stalls. I was like okay thats weird so I turn it back on and instead of stalling, the RMP gauge keeps dipping and then going back up and theres a strange knocking noise, so I turn it off and then decide to try again. Same thing happens so I go to open the hood and the noise is pretty loud. I noticed a strange smell outside the car while the motor was running, but I can't really explain it. So I turn it off for about 2 minutes and then start it again and its just back to normal, I'm so confused. I drove it about 5 miles and it seems fine, aside from idling slightly rougher than normal. What this could be?
View 11 RepliesI have a set of ST that were put on a year ago. I raised them up in October for the winter. This past Saturday I lowered the car back down. As soon as I did I have the loud noise coming from the front passenger side.
I know it's not the top hats because I had that issue and replaced it and not the same noise. It is not the clunk that people associate with springs.
The noise seems to happen when spring/strut expand and retract.
Called ST today and they said if I had the car all the way down it is my fault. WTF? Why would you make a coil that is adjustable and the customer is able to go all the way down and then say it's my fault IF strut is blown?
The car drives straight and smooth so I dunno if it is blown. Could it be because of a build up of crap between the springs over winter (I saw some.)
