Golf/GTI VII :: Sunroof Rattle At Low Speed
Dec 14, 2014
I was getting a low speed rattle and isolated it to the sunroof. Basically if I slightly lift it the rattle goes away.

View 13 RepliesI have a 2011 corolla S with 32.5k on it, so my 3yr/36k warranty is running up in a few months. my car from day one (that I had it, at 17k)has had an annoying rattle in the headliner ahead of the sunroof, near the overhead lights. If I press up, even slightly on the lip of the headliner around the front of the sunroof cutout, it goes away. Dealer thinks its normal and says repairs wouldn't be covered under warranty.
The second is a new one, when I go over a bump in the road at highway speeds, there is a squeak coming from the center of the dashboard, at first I thought it was a strut, but after driving back and forth on the same stretch of road for half an hour, I found it to be coming from somewhere behind the radio. Dealer says, squeaks will happen as a car ages.
Do I need to take it to a new dealer (about an hour away) or can I fix this myself?
I have a few different rattles going on that I am not sure how to fix. I did a quick search and didn't find exactly what I was looking for.
1) Sunroof sunshade - about a week ago, the sunshade on the sunroof has started to rattle when the sunroof is open. If I lightly push up on the sunshade the rattle stops. The rattle goes away when the sunroof is closed.
2) Armrest - I get a rattle when driving over anything but super smooth roads if the armrest is any position but all the way down and pushed in. When armrest is extended, if I put any weight on it, the rattle pretty much goes away.
3) Driver side dash vent - again over anything but super smooth roads, the driver's side vent on the dash (next to the top of the drivers door) will rattle. If I push on the vent, the rattle is reduced but doesn't go away completely.
Have a sunroof that rattles when closed while going over bumps? I use my fingers to lift up on it and its barely budging, also floors are soaked....
View 3 RepliesSo I'm approaching my first service interval and I'm wanting the dealer to check out a few minor issues I've been having with my GTI. Namely, a squeaky sunroof when it's cold out, slight vent fan rattle, and the occasional "fish bite" from the engine. I've already talked to the dealer and told them of the issues and they seemed reluctant to give me a loaner if the car takes longer than a day.
View 6 RepliesSo I cant figure out where this is coming from. It only happens when the car is in low RPM. Like starting from a stop or going slow in very low RPM I hear plastic rattling constantly. I went in the back and the only thing that is making similar noise is when I tap on the plastic cover of the rear hatch under the window.
View 3 RepliesSo my 2000 1.8t is about to go into its 7th year and for the most part is doing very well. I have a rattle in my sunroof that is driving me crazy lately and I want to get it fixed. It looks like something with the plastic off to the sides. Nothing appears to be loose or out of place.

View 8 RepliesI've owned my 2004 GX since last November and it has a had an issue with the sunroof in the last couple months.
The problem is my sunroof rattles when it is closed and I have already taken into my local dealership. The first attempt was to lube up the gasket, which worked temporarily. The most recent attempt was to remove the sunroof and realign it as they said it was higher toward the rear of the car.
It seemed to have worked, but now the rattle started up again slight and it will probably progress to get louder. If I push up the sunroof, there is a slight play toward the front of the car. The rattle when driving seems to be coming from the between the front and rear seats so what is actually causing the noise. There is a slight rattle whenever i close the driver or passenger side door.
The service manager said that the GX's have this common problem and that there will also be a slight rattling from the chassis flex. At its worst, I could clearly hear the rattle driving in a straight line, while slightly steering left and right. I know the GX is a truck and not a unibody chassis design, but I would think Lexus could make quite sunroof for this luxury vehicle.
First real cold day here in Connecticut and I noticed a rattle which seems to come from sunroof area.( when I push up agains sunroof, it seems to lessen or go away. I had my radio off and it was very annoying
View 3 RepliesSunroof developing rattles? It is more noticeable with the sunroof open. Have had the car 9 months and it has just started rattling on any bumps- very annoying.
View 16 RepliesI have a rattle in my 2004 Lariat crew cab with sunroof. The sound seemed to come from the rear seat, but I finally tracked it down to to roof of the cab. The back dome light (and interior roof) has sagged some and I guess it's the dome light or wires are rattling when driving.
View 1 RepliesTook vehicle in for two things last week and they said both were normal for the vehicle.
1. Sunroof rattles. I can physically push up on the sunroof and feel a little play in it. It doesn't leak or anything, but does rattle on certain roads. Dealer say it's tightened to standards and within normal expected specs for the age of the vehicle (2007), but after feeling the sunroof in my other car that has no play in it whatsoever, I'm a little skeptical.
2. Under certain conditions, the tranny seems to slip/pause and then grab a gear. It happens on off-ramps usually. I let off the gas to slow down and the give it gas to carry me through the off-ramp. It feels like a clunk or the tranny slipping trying to find a gear and then it finds one and noticably clunks in. Dealer hooked up a computer to it and it says it's operating noramlly and the clunk is just a product of the way I drive and the electronic shifting computer. I've had my drive shaft replaced thinking this was the problem, but it's still there.
Maybe a week or so ago my F's sunroof at high speeds (65-80) has started rattling. Sounds like there is something loose, and it is clanking on another part. I will be taking it to a dealership or auto shop to have it repaired, or fixing it myself if it is something minor. And its not just a one off rattle, it is constant when at those speeds. Had a two hour drive yesterday and it was driving me crazy.
View 12 RepliesHave noticed since I had my car that I have a mild sunroof rattle. If I push on the rear right corner of the sunroof glass I have feel a little bit of play. This play is causing rattling on bumpy roads. I had the same issue on my 07 GS350 because it was slammed ( rode pretty ruff like the ISF), but I cant remember what they did to fix the issue. I am assuming it needs some insulation or tightening. Pretty sure with the way the ISF rides and the number of members we have with lowered ISF that I am surely not the only member with this rattle.
View 14 RepliesA rattle has developed coming from the headliner behind the sunroof, I hear it when driving over rough roads. It seems most noticeable on the passenger side. I can replicate it if I thump on the headliner in the backseat behind the sunroof. I can make it stop if I push up against the headliner when sitting in the back seat. And I am pretty sure its not coming from the sunroof which has its own set of noises.
View 3 RepliesI recently bought a Nissan Altima and noticed that the sunroof area rattles when I go over a bumpy patch of road or a manhole cover. The sound is definitely a rattle and not a squeaking sound. I can replicate the sound by smacking the roof from the inside of the car and it's contained mostly to right above where my head is near the bottom left corner of the sunroof.
When I got the car I removed the wind deflector that's attached to the roof because I really don't like how they look. I also removed the wind deflector arm since the plastic connector to it broke when I removed the deflector. I'm guessing the sun cooked the plastic parts and it just snapped. I doubt the rattle is due to the arm being removed but I added it in just in case. This weekend I removed part of the trim on the inside of the roof and blew compressed air to get debris out but the rattle is still there.
How to get this annoying problem to just go away?
OK, I thought I saw where people were lubing certain areas for a clunk but it was a squeek.
Seems like over rougher terrain my 11 sunroof tends to clunk. However the painful part is I can't reproduce it on demand, clunk or a rattle. Its deeper in tone for sure and not a squeak.
Nothing is more annoying to me than constant rattles and noises in a vehicle. My 2012 Limited Elantra makes a couple of noises that are really annoying. The first is a constant light rattle the seems to come from the dome light area or the sunroof. I haven't been able to pinpoint it, but it drives me nuts. The other noise comes from the back doors area, or maybe the pillars. It happens on both sides, but mostly on the drivers side, and it only happens when the car goes over certain bumps, or when I take a curve a certain way. It almost sounds like a cracking noise. I've heard of glove compartment rattles, but that doesn't seem to happen with my car.
View 87 RepliesSo randomly my sunroof has begun to rattle terribly when driving at 70+. It only rattles when closed, if I have it in the "up" position there is no rattle but obv then u get road noise.
I looked as well as I could down into the tracks and felt around and couldn't see or feel any loose screws or anything so I'm stumped.
Starter driving this morning and heard what one could describe as a metallic rattle from somewhere at the front end: like a stone tossed in a can. Stopped and did a brief visual inspection but did not see anything. Shifted to N and revved the engine all quiet. Started driving faster, the sound went away. Found some old threads about brake pads rattling. could that be it?
