Golf/GTI VII :: Slight Engine Oil Overfill
May 18, 2015
I have a 3 1/2 month old GTI with 1800 miles on the clock. I check the oil regularly and noticed that the level was 1/3 down on the dipstick in the add/don't add range of the stick. My last car (a Honda S2000) had a graduated dipstick with "X"s denoting 1/10 of a liter, adding up to a full liter. It was very simple to know how much oil should be added.
As the level was down a 1/3 of the range on the stick, I conservatively added 200ml slowly and checked the stick. To my surprise, the level shows just above the"full" mark. I checked the oil on a level surface with a cold engine. I read in the manual that VW says to measure a few minutes after shut-off after oil has gone back to the pan, but I have always done an oil check on a cold engine. I understand oil cavitation and what it can do, but I'm thinking that such a small amount over will not be a problem- 200ml is equal to 0.2 qts. I considered making a tool with a turkey baster and some fish tank air hose to pull the oil out from the top. I could also jack the car up, loosen the oil drain plug, and let some oil out.

I put 4 qts Mobil 1 motor oil in, with a new Mobil filter. Drove 400 miles no problem. Parked car a week. Drove car to find CEL on. Can overfull oil cause this? (I heard it can cause lower gas mileage.)

Wrecked my 2005 and bought 2006 with 65,000k. Dealer had just changed oil and it is well above last dimple. Dealers have been quoted as saying no harm to engine by overfilling' At first I started out at 51 mpg and after first trip or two it is down to c.47mpg. Will overfill cause loss of fuel...

I went to a local oil change place on Tuesday morning for an oil change. Had them change the air filter (engine and cabin) at the same time. The odometer is at about 165k on my 2006 base model Prius. When the job was completed and I pushed the power button, Christmas tree. Giant red triangle of death, check engine, and the display picture with the "!" in the middle. Can't put it into gear. Engine runs briefly and cuts out. Maybe they tripped a wire when they changed the filter? Nope, all was good there. Silly little tech put it on his code reading machine to no avail.
I called the local Toyota dealership that I hate and don't use and they gave the oil change guy instructions to jump it. No dice. So I leave it in the bay and call a tow truck. Towing guy figures out how to get it into neutral and puts it on his truck to take to local hated dealership (mistake). Long day of fighting with oil change place, followed by super star service from larger dealership in Austin (60 miles away) with the service rep I always use. He diagnosed the likely problem over the phone. I didn't even let local hated dealership do the diagnostics. I put that little Prius baby on a flatbed and took her to Austin.
Well, the codes pulled were P0A0F (engine failed to start) and P3190 (poor engine power). Well, that is the magic combination along with the experience of my service rep and tech to confirm that too much oil was added. It's was about a half of a quart. Crazy, right? Well, they cleaned the throttle body, interior of intake manifold of oil residue and all is well again. The big battery was completely dead so the dealership charged it up for me.
Next morning I pick it up and big battery is charged about halfway. Not sure if they completely charged it the night before. However, by the time I got to work (maybe 5 miles), battery indicator was full (green). I had an oddity when I had a longer stop light idle later that afternoon where the battery went from 4 blue bars down to purple, but drove the 60 miles back home and today the charge seems to be fine (4-5 blue bars). I have a sneaking suspicion that there may be more issues, but for now all is well. I'm going to get the 12V battery changed soon because we're still riding on the original.

I have just checked my oil and it would seem that the garage who serviced it last have overfilled it with oil (idiots). This was performed 3000 miles ago before I bought it, not by my specialist, its a 3.2. The dip stick has a hatched area and I would say the level is about half and inch above that, above the bent bit. There is (misleadingly) a line running across the dipstick at that point and that has maybe mislead a mechanic.
I'm intending to drain off the excess before I drive it again but am worried as it's been like this for some time. Has it done any damage, the engine seems ok, is there anything I can check?

Our Honda Accord had motor oil in the radiator overfill. Our mechanic thought it needed a new head gasket; it was repaired about three weeks ago. The problem is still the same. The dip stick is down on oil about 2 quarts and is clear. The overflow is mixed with oil.

Had the oil changed in 2006 forester. They put 6 qts of oil in. The car was driven for 1 day, less than 50 miles and was blowing white smoke. Had the oil changed again with the right amount. The dealer is saying the car needs a head gasket. Did the oil overfill cause this?

Replace this when they got a code p0440? If so, which way did you go about replacing? if so, did u have to drop the tank or from cutting from underneath the seat? Is this the same location as from the 1st gen is300?

I have noticed a slight stutter in the acceleration when pushing it hard. Seems to be most noticeable 4th gear around 4500-5500 rpm. Is that because I dont have a HPFP? I also notice the fluttery whistle sound that was discussed at length in another thread...doesn't bother me one bit but it seems to coincide the stuttery acceleration. Also, I noticed it upon the very first drive after getting flashed - currently at 2500km.

I recently was driving down my road in an ice storm from work and slid sideways into what I think was a depressed storm drain. (Lots of snow as well so unable to tell what exactly what it was) I hit the right front tire/rim into it. It was the loudest thud, one where you would think the tire came off. Nothing apparent visually, but on the highway it did create a slight vibration so i had both front tires re-balanced. Again, still a vibration about 35mph and up. Rebalanced again and still the same exact vibration.
It's not like hand numbing on the steering wheel but annoying and when you know you car in and out you know what vibrations are supposed to be there and which ones aren't. The tire place said the rim was not bent. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I was thinking of switching that right front tire to the back to maybe see if that worked with the vibe. Next step would be an alignment but the tire place insisted that wasn't the problem since I had one in November when the snows went on.

Noticed A Slight Hesitation On Take off?

I have a 2010 with about 166k miles. I am getting a slight hesitation at slight acceleration or constant speed. It does not matter if it's on highway or freeway speeds. Now I am not sure if this in junction with me changing the PCV valve, cleaning the EGR pipe, or cleaning the TB for carbon recently. It started happening a week after it though.

2005 Escape 3.0 with 160k miles. Slight miss under cruise, goes away under slight throttle. No service history known about vehicle. Best to replace spark plugs and coils with Motorcraft parts? And the intake gaskets too? Suggestions for correct plugs?

Just hit a fantastic Minnesota pot hole. Have a slight shimmy now at higher speeds, feels like its from the rear. Don't see any obvious dents in the rim, what else could I have bent back there? I'm wondering if this is psychosomatic and our roads just suck right now or if I really damaged something.

Just noticed today that I have a slight drop in boost. Normal boost is 1.5 bar but today it is running slightly lower boost and does not have the same pull through all the gears.

In the last week i have noticed a slight vibration and click in the 6mt on my 2010.
It happens when i have the car in gear, and was accelerating but then lifted off the gas without taking the car out of gear. what happens is about a half a second after lifting, the gear shift gets a little shake for a tenth of a second, which comes right with a faint click (like a solenoid clicking) which is from right about mid right thigh in the middle console. it also is louder and more vibration in the lower gears, almost unnoticeable in 6th
I never noticed this before, its rather annoying in traffic. Thinking I want to take the car in to see if something needs work.

Driving home from work today I hit the largest pothole in my life (seriously). I had a slight vibration between 40-50mph after the impact. Got home took the wheel off and it bent it partially and bubbled the sidewall of the tire. No worries I have the VW wheel/tire protection and can get it repaired and get a new tire. What really concerns me is the right side axle. It clearly hit the frame of the car and is indented slightly. As I turn the axle by hand I can tell it's slightly off on one side. My question is do I need a new axle? Or do you think the indent is throwing me off when I spin it making it look unbalanced?

I've had my GTI for 2 months but just tonight I noticed some slight distortion in the passenger side of my windshield glass. It almost makes things like slightly "wavy". It would be hard to notice unless I pointed it out, but it's there. Now here's the funny thing, it can only be seen from the driver's side of the car. I sat in the passenger side and it looked totally fine. I also noticed that only the windshield is made by Vitro based in Mexico, the rest of the glass has Sekurit stamps, based (made?) in Germany. I'm wondering if this is considered normal or at least acceptable.

So yesterday in traffic my R went up 1 tick on the temp gauge while in traffic. It took about 30 minutes in traffic for it to go up that one tick. I know that there is some test you can do to check if the low speed fan is coming on. What is that test?
This morning in traffic for 45 minutes and no overheating of any kind, temp didn't move from full vertical... That being said, when i got to my office, I popped the hood and tossed the AC on while parked, only 1 fan (pass side) was running, aren't they both supposed to be going with the AC on?
