Recently the dealer damaged the leather on my steering wheel and is having a guy repair it. Work obligations have made it very difficult to get time to take the car in and I would have to really squeeze to get the car in to them at the moment.
View 10 RepliesI dropped off my 2006 Mercury Milan at a local Ford dealer this morning to have an AC temperature chip replaced because my air was not cold and prior diagnostics determined the chip no longer functioned. This turned out to be quite a costly repair. I was told it took 9 hours of labor requiring the entire dashboard to be removed. After picking up my car, I started driving home and immediately noticed the steering wheel was angled about 45 degrees to the right while I was driving straight. I have never seen something like this (and my car has been out of alignment before). I took it back to Ford to tell them that the steering wheel was crooked while the tires were straight and the manager said she didn't know how this could have happened because they never even lifted the vehicle. What might be wrong? Silver lining...the AC works now.
View 13 RepliesI have a 2006 VW Golf with 140,000 miles. Last week took it to the shop to have a wheel bearing replaced. Mechanic also replaced the wheel hub. When I left the shop I discovered a new problem that had not previously been there. Now the Anti-lock brakes are kicking in at the very end of a soft stop on smooth, dry roads and even in my garage. This happens about 20% of the time, but never during a hard stop. I took it back to the shop on Monday and mechanic could not find anything and was perplexed. The question is whether the ABS sensor could have been damaged during repairs and is the car safe to drive?
View 14 RepliesI have a bad wheel bearing but on the highway my steering wheel shakes. It is only on the highway not down residential streets. I'm pretty sure it is the driver's side wheel bearing. I already balanced my wheels and everything.
View 5 RepliesNoisy steering wheel. It doesn't matter where I position the wheel, I'm hearing clatter when going over bumps or when putting pressure on the wheel. It has no effect on steering. I think it's coming from somewhere inside the adjustment mechanism. I figure the dealer will need to take a look.
View 7 Replies My R32 which has around 45k was running fine until I went to leave work. As soon as I got in and went to back up I noticed, I had a red steering wheel warning light lit and I had no power steering. It ran fine at lunch and had been sitting for several hours at this point.
I only have two other known issues with my car. One the starter motor is squealing and has been for a while. When the dealer looked at it, he said it would probably fail one day, but it wasn't something I needed to take care of now. I have yet to have a single issue actually starting the car. I figured I would hold off until I found a local mechanic I liked since it was out of warranty. The other issue is during two especially hot days my fuel gauge fluctuated and I would get the low fuel warning even though I had more than half a tank. They also looked at that and said it was just the sending unit which failed to respond several times during their tests. It hasn't happened since but it was on the to do list.
Is it common for the power steering to just fail like that? I have read that a low or dying battery will give off weird electrical errors so I am hoping it might be something simple like that or possibly a fuse which I couldn't check tonight.
If it is not something simple like that, what I might be looking at as far as fixing it goes? Of course it had to happen on a Thursday night so I don't even know if I will be able to find somewhere to look at it and I don't have a scanner. Also without power steering I don't really trust trying to drive it anywhere.
So I was replacing a wheel stud and while taking the caliper out, I accidentally unscrewed the brake fluid bolt and it drained a little bit of fluid out. I had to decompress the caliper to put the brake pads in.
Everything was placed back the correct way, now the brake feels too spongy and I have to press the pedal all the way to stop the car. not feeling safe.
I'm not sure what needs to be done here.. did I somehow get air in the system? the brake fluid cap was on the whole time.
Recently, my wife starting hearing scratching around in the steering column when turning. It sounded like wires being twisted around. Eventually, several things stopped working:
1) the horn,
2) the cruise control, and
3) the airbag (the light came on).
It seems safe to assume that the wire/scratching sound is connected. My question is whether it is possible for me, a layman, to open the steering column to attempt to repair it myself...?
Is there some common issue with this? Purchased the vehicle new in 2008, and in 2011 we have had to have the car in for this issue at least once a year. They replace one, then the other, then back to the first one, and now it appears the second is not working again. Each winter we run into this. The dealer will only warranty for a year, so I am paying each time.
View 1 Replies have an 04 f150 that is starting to show some rust in the rear wheel wells. Right now there is just a bit of rust where the painted panel is seamed to the inner panel around the arch, but I can see small spots where the paint is starting to bubble about an inch out on the outside of the panel. I want to keep this thing looking nice for a few more years; what should I do?
I'm a very good welder, can hold my own when turning wrenches, have done lots of metal fabrication as well as painting with a cup gun, but I have very little autobody experience.
I am thinking there is rust between the inner and outer panels and that removing the surface rust and repainting would be a very temporary repair, correct? Could I cover it up with some sort of wheel well liner? If so, how to I slow the existing rust? Is there any sort of partial preformed steel panel/well that allow you to cut off the rusty stuff and weld new stuff on? I'm a little leary of the last thought- I could do the fabbing, but not sure how I'd do getting it back to 'smooth'
Every R32 I test drove - had the wheel off center / Top Center about at 11:00 while driving on straight roads. Small issue but drives me nuts. Used to be a DSM for Subaru years ago, and all Sub's came as straight as an arrow.....this was actually a big deal for them.
Maybe this is like the Driver's side wiper - all the same.
The steering wheel of my new 2010 GTI rests about 5-10 degrees left of center when traveling in a straight line on the level surface with properly inflated tires. When requested to investigate this matter, Pignataro Volkswagen of Everett, Washington responded that their mechanic was unable to see any misalignment of the steering wheel during his test-drive and that any post-delivery wheel alignment issues are not covered under the 3yr/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty.
This may seem like a very minor issue, but I don't think it's too much to ask that a brand-new automobile have a steering wheel that is indexed in a properly centered position when traveling in a straight line on a level road without any "crown" to its surface.
I just noticed today that when I let of the gas my steering wheel will shake a little bit and when I let off the brake after I come to a stop light my steering wheel would shake. Why the could be happening. Could it be from a bad axle, alignment, something wrong with the brakes, bent wheel, balancing, or something.
View 3 RepliesI have had the O.Z.s balanced about # more times since. The front end is fine, new bearings, new control arm bushings. I have the necessary parts (aftermarket conical bolts and hubcentric rings). There are no noticeable bends or dents in the rims and it's starting to get annoying..so, should I get rid of them or maybe there is something that I'm missing here. Could the wheels just be bad.
View 24 RepliesI have a 2010 GTI 2 door. I noticed that my steering wheel is not aligned and is slightly cocked to the left and it is driving me crazy! I had the car to dealer twice and they did a front end alignment but I still has not fixed the problem. I am thinking someone on the assembly line put the steering wheel on a few degrees off on the shaft spline. I also have a 4 door 2010 GTI 4 door and it is perfect.

View 7 RepliesI have a 2011 GTI and lately I've been running into an issue with my steering wheel buttons and the RNS-315.
Issue #1: When I use the left button to toggle left/right between my radio presets (does it on both FM and Sirius), if I hit "right" it will go left. If I hit "left" it goes right...but only 3 times. On the fourth time it will jump to some random station. This happens all the time.
Issue #2: When using MDI connected to an ipod, the left button lets me switch through the songs just fine. but every once in a while (for example it has only happened once this month) it will freeze up and the left buttons will no longer function (e.g. let me toggle between songs). When this happens I switch to radio and the same deal, buttons are frozen. turning the radio off and back on again lets me switch once, then it's frozen again. If I turn the car off and on, it's back to normal.
I'm having the same issue that I had on my previous Mkv car. Around 55-80mph the steering wheel will wobble back and forth at about a quarter of an inch very quickly. It's an identical shake to my last Mkv. I had the wheels balanced and checked for bends and the car aligned. Didn't work. Went to various shops spent too much on balancing. One shop showed me that one of my tires was slightly out of round. So I bought 4 new tires and had them road forced shop said everything was great. Hopped on the freeway and the same wobble was still there. Car is at 52k miles and I've been battling this problem for about 5k miles now.
I've had the entire car checked. One tech told me that the axels could have gone bad so it is going in under warranty to get new axels on Tuesday, then going back in for an alignment. My last Mkv had the same issue around the same mileage and I spent so much on trying to figure it out I eventually got sick of it and traded it in on this GTI. My girl friend just bought an 09 Jetta and it seems to be having early signs of the same vibration. I'm starting to think its an issue with the generation. My mk3 with 200k miles drives smoother than this thing. I love the car but me driving on the freeway so often really kills the enjoyment.
I've got 66,000 miles on my R32 and I notice that on certain highway surfaces my steering wheel is beginning to vibrate at around 70mph.
View 8 RepliesWas caught in traffic last night and noticed the steering wheel is not concentric to the hump in the dash over the speedo and tachometer. I need to drive a few other cars to see if this is common.......Or did VW overlook one of the little things during the design stages.
View 14 RepliesI now have 14500 miles on my R and took it to the dealer Monday because the brakes are shaking the steering wheel again. After I had my R for 3 months and a little over 2000 miles it was taken in with this problem and the dealer turned the rotors. Everything was fine for about 3 more months and now had 5000 miles the brakes started to shake and grind real bad. I took it in again and this time the rotors were replaced. It was good till a month ago and they started to screach when I stopped and shake the steering wheel when I touched the brakes. So this is the 3rd time I have had brake problems and 2nd time the rotors need to be replaced. They can't tell me why this is happening. I was asked if I do a lot of hard driving, and I told them that I average almost 25 mpg and you don't get that driving super hard. I drive 76 miles round trip to work and all but 4 miles is highway with only 3 stop signs so it is easy to average that. I don't know how long the warranty will keep covering rotors if they can't find the cause. I love my R but I am not going to pay $700 - 800 or more for new rotors every 8000 miles.
