Golf/GTI VII :: Faint Thump Noise When Changing Gears From 1st To 2nd And 2nd To 3rd
Jan 9, 2015
2015 GTI, 6sp, Coupe, 3000km.
When changing gears from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, I get this faint THUMP thump noise coming from what seems to be the driver side foot well area, on the other side of the firewall.
Other ways to replicate is by simply clutching in as if changing gears, but not actually shifting. It can be prevented by shifting/accelerating very slowly (not practical).
Nothing can be felt in the clutch pedal OR the shifter. Can't be replicated in neutral, or by simply letting off the gas under boost. ONLY when the clutch is engaged about 2.5k RPM in 1st, and 2nd.
What it could be. Dogbone bushings? Engine mount? Gerbils? Also, went to dealer and they said it wasn't "enough" for them to start pulling stuff apart. Was told to wait until it gets worse.

Last year, July, replaced Trans.modulator..All went well. Now..sloppy shifting, occasion heavy thump changing gears when slowing. Trans. people say All good according to their programs.....but they also feel the same problems. Its an internal problem, they say, too expensive to tear down.Drive it until it dies. ( 161 K on the odometer.....otherwise is perfect. I want to do a flush, then drop the pan, change the screens, tighten the bands and replace Trans. fluid.

I first noticed this recently as my wife was pulling out of the driveway into the street... The car wasn't cold, as it had been running for a bit over 5 minutes, warming up. My driveway slopes a bit towards the street and also has a dip/hump at the end of it. As she pulled out in R from P, I heard a thump. I also hear a noise which sounds like the brakes engaging. So in order, brakes engaging, shift from P to R, the thump then as it backs up and turns into the street, there's a slight, faint grind noise.
As the car stops to go from R to D, it thumps again. But as it goes into drive and pulls away..smooth as butter and quiet. I've heard and read that it's possible motor mounts. I'm wondering if the light grinding is the actuator...or perhaps dried out bushings in the control arms... Also read the possibility of the trans going bad, which I highly doubt, but who knows. My plan is to call Lexus in the morning and see if I can be squeezed in.

I own a 2000 Jetta auto with 200k on it. I have the same problem. It wouldn't change gears till 4000 rpm i scanned it. And got the cods g38 and g68. So I changed both. It was working fine then again same thing it works then stop works. So scanned it again and got same codes changed them again worked fine then stopped working so I took it to vw and they told me same thing same sensors and the wire harness so I changed them again got the parts from VW this time. It was working then stopped. And when I turn on the car and drive my gear box display goes all black for at least 10 min driving then goes back to normal. But sill doesn't change gears. Now not even after 4000 rpm. Ps. When I do it manual 1st gear 2 and changes fine once I put it on drive doesn't not change gears.

I have a 2011 Tiguan 125TSI with the 7 speed DSG. When it starts cold, you can hear a noise that sounds like a bad gear change when going from 3th to 4th, and 4th to 5th. It almost sounds like changing gears in a manual car without clutch completely depressed. It has been there since I got the car brand new, but recently it seems to be getting worse.
Once the engine gets warm, the sound goes away and gear changes are smooth.
I've asked the VW dealer about the sound and they tell me it is normal. Is this right? The problem is it is very hard to demonstrate to VW the issue since it may happen only once when the engine is cold. I've left it with the dealer overnight and they were able to reproduce it in the morning... but again, they tell me this is normal.

Got a 02 Jetta 1.8T 5spd auto tiptronic with 100k miles. Having issues with shifting. Trying to determine if its electronic or mechanical. Had a short in solenoid 10 N283 which melted the TCM. Put in a used N283 to see if the trans is still ok mechanically. Plan is if its ok to put new fluids and solenoid pack. What do the experts think does is need a full rebuild or will new electronics do the job?
After putting the used N283 solenoid the trans works but not correct. The problem is in the shifting only. Feels like its out of time. When you start moving from a stopped position from 1st to 2nd the car takes off good but when changing gears it reves and feels like its slipping then it hits hard into 2nd. Then 2nd-3rd is a fast shift and not hard. 3rd-4th slips and revs a little then changes gears 4th-5th is fine. all down shifts are fine. Does not mater if the car is hot or cold its the same.
If I disconnect the MAF 1st to 2nd shifts fine with no problems. 2nd-3rd little rough but not bad. Problem with disconnected MAF when going in Drive at 30-40mph all of a sudden it jumped into 1st gear and felt like I was slamming on the brakes.
With the MAF connected and I shift manually in tiptronic mode each gear runs real good with no slipping at all. But same problem happens when switching gears. I can drive it smooth if i accelerate to 3000 rpm and then left off the gas a little and it shifts fine.. Same with the other gears.
I got a used TCM to rule that out and the problem is close to the same. It tries to shift at lower rpm but still does about the same problem. I did recently had a MAF go out. Put in a new bosch and no change. Did my VCDS scan and only codes I get is "17840 secondary air". I can get operational data on some solenoids but not sure what parameters to look for.

My car has an intermittent crackling noise when changing gears from park to reverse, park to drive, and vice versa. It also starts squeaking (coming from the engine) when backing up. The crackling noise almost sounds like sparks.
Having that issue in their generation 2 Prius? I was told by the service adviser that it was the brakes. I think it sounds like a bad issue, although I was told it was completely normal, and maybe they can clean something. Is this pretty commonplace?

So I changed transmission fluid on my 1.8t GLS because I was having difficulty shifting out of gears on cold starts. It seemed to work fine for a few days and now I'm back to square one, it still doesn't want to shift correctly!

Noticed this a few times. 2004 V10 and when it changes down to first gear it does it with a thump. almost feels like the car has stalled. Doesn't do it all the time but now I am looking for it I find it.

I've had my car for less than a week and have noticed something, I want to check with you all here to see if it is common or not.
When in 2nd gear with my foot off the gas between 1-2K RPM, I hear a faint whining sound that gets lower in pitch as the RPMs drop. An example of when this would happen is if I were coming up to a stop sign in a residential area in 2nd gear, coasting to the stop sign. The sound starts a little under 2K RPM.
I don't remember hearing this in 3rd gear and I haven't tried in 1st.

My wife and I have a 2002 Golf, Manual transmission, 2.0L, L4, 8V with 178xxx ODO.
About a year ago I started hearing a very faint squeal that would always squeal, regardless of A/C use, no power loss is felt, in fact, the A/C works great and the car runs perfectly. But after a year of driving and 1 big road trip, the sound is now unbearable.
I recently replaced the alternator, belt tensioner, and threw on a new belt, but still, the squeal persists. After holding a rubber hose to my ear and moving through each accessory pulley with the other end of the hose, like a ghetto stethoscope, I know that it is definitely coming from the A/C compressor pulley.
I found a video on the Youtube that perfectly catches the same squeal (not my car, not my video) [URL]....
Since the A/C compressor has a clutch, and the outer pulley is constantly spinning with the serpentine and there is no noticeable difference in the noise whether I am using the A/C or not, I think that the outer bearings on that clutch need to be replaced.
Should I just replace the whole clutch and any good DIY threads on this? I've looked but all I can find is a DIY for a TDI, which I don't know if it's the same compressor or not.

So I have an odd whistle noise, when I give it a little gas it makes a faint whistle noise. Only happens on acceleration with a little gas, I don't think it's the turbo.

Started a few days ago, There is a faint whistle noise when I am open throttle around 2500rpms. It lasts for about a second and does not occur at any other time. It does not occur under gradual acceleration, or when the car is parked/in neutral and just revving. I tried searching the forums *a little* bit, but my keywords just may have not been right.
My first inkling is that it may be related to flapper, since the rpms seem right and sounds vacuum related to me. But, the unit is completely disconnected (have borla cat-back) and the hose is ziptied, so is this possible? I will try to get a video of the noise later today.

I drive a 2010 Golf Wagon/JSW, and when I'm going at speeds around +60 mph/90 kmph and lift off the accelerator a faint high pitched whirling noise comes on. As soon as I tap the gas pedal it goes away. What this could be?
It's been a week now since I've noticed this, I guess I've never noticed it before or it's getting louder..i don't know?

I have an early model year 2004 Touareg which has lately developed what appears to be a slipping problem when changing gears from 5th to 4th when decelerating or the same when accelerating strongly and downshifting. When switching over to tiptronic mode, its not clear if that apparent slipping goes away or changes. It definitely isn't as severe but that could be due to perception or the RPMs where the shifting is occurring.
The only real interesting characteristic of this clunk and lurch that is experienced is that it only happens when the car is warm -- I've been watching the transmission oil temperature, and it appears to start happening as it passes through 200 degrees. When it starts, the lurch/clunk is small and not too bad. As the car reaches temperature, it reaches if full lurch/clunk potential.
I have taken it to the dealer once and they have "upgraded software" that was supposed to clear up the problem, but did not.

About twice a year I am noting a too soon change of gears on automatic mode. This may be the fourth time it happens is just coming and going by itself.
I notice that when driving on constant traffic and going about 40mph I'm doing 5th gear so when traffic clears up I have to really step on the gas so car downgrades to catch up with traffic. What may be happening?

I have a squeak when I change gears, especially from 1st to 2nd. I have a twm short shifter with bronze cable bushings. My first thought was that the bronze bushings were causing the squeak, but I eventually narrowed it down to the shaft that comes out of the back of the transmission with the weight bolted on it (not sure what it's called). I took out the intake filter box so I could get at it and confirm that it was where the squeaking was coming from. That's definitely where it was coming from so I pulled back the boot seal and greased the shaft with some white lithium grease. That has worked a bit, but the squeak is still there.

My wife always chastises me for not coming to a complete stop from backing up before I shift the car into drive. I do not shift when the car is still moving more than 1-2 MPH, in fact it is barely moving when I change gears. My wife insists that I come to a complete stop and wait 1-2 seconds before shifting from reverse to drive. She is convinced that I am doing damage to the transmission the way I shift. I insist that no damage is being done and point out that with over 100,000 miles there have been no transmission problems with the car. Am I damaging the transmission by shifting before I come to a complete stop in reverse?

I drive a 1998 B5 1.8T passat. This happens when i go up a hill, i mean i can go up the hill fine but then when I go straight my rpms go crazy before changing gears, idk if this is normal but I doubt it.

I have a 2002 Impreza Outback Sport. Since moving to Tucson, AZ, from Flagstaff, AZ, the car jumps when changing gears (I have a manual) as if I was back in the day of learning how to drive a stick shift. This only happens in the summer, when temperatures get up to 110. Also, the idle is very rough and the car almost stalls when stopping quickly (this is infrequent). What's happening with my car?

My 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan transmission suddenly does not changing in gear This happened when I was driving. The engine light came one and transmission seems to stuck in a gear. Acceleration is fine but the van slows down quickly if I let go the gas pedal. Seems like it stuck in a gear. How to I troubleshoot and is there anything I can do at home?
