Golf/GTI VII :: Clunk When Upshifting And Downshifting - Constant Vibration In Front
Jul 4, 2015
After 11 VWs, I finally have one that I would love to drive over a cliff. My 2015 Golf TSI Sport is a miserable car for me. I have had it back to the dealer four times for the infamous "shimmy" and shift problem with the automatic transmission. It has the standard automatic. The transmission has no idea which gear to use, it shifts like a bowling ball in a barrel.
Clunks upshifting and downshifting. The other problem is the shimmy/wobble. I have it in spades. The car always feels like it is hitting small strips in the road with a constant vibration in the front. The dealer cannot find the problem even though VW is trying to figure it out. (I have a feeling this isn't the first time). It is the worst driving car I have ever owned. Would much rather drive my 04 GTI with 100,000 miles and worn tires.

When I am going about 55 my transmission sometimes starts downshifting and then up shifting again for no reason.

I recently replaced my clutch and I've noticed that occasionally, while downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, I hear a clunk sound that comes from beneath the back seats. Especially if my throttle bliping is not aggressive enough. What this could be?

I bought this 2010 f150 from the company I work for, front diff was shot, front drive shaft was in the bed, that's all I knew about the truck so I bought a complete front diff from a used place, it only has 58000km on it, good diff... So I installed the diff and the old front drive shaft, which doesn't seem to be in the best condition, now when 4 wheel drive is engaged I'm getting a constant clunk/binding noise from the front driveshaft area. Where to start looking.

I have a 2000 Jetta with the 2.0 automatic and just like the title states, I have recently developed a engine vibration that is felt at all times. It is much worse when the car is in gear. I only seem to feel it in the gas and brake pedals. It does not seem to depend on speed nor does it only occur at certain rpms. It feels like someone zip tied a vibrating back messager to my pedals. I want to find out what it is because on long commutes my foot begins to feel like its falling asleep. I can visually see the engine vibrating with the car in gear. I am leaning towards motor mounts.

I have this annoying vibration that starts at 85-90 mph and stays relatively constant above that, but doesn't get super intense or feel like the car is going to fall apart. Its a light vibration that I can feel at 9 and 3 on the steering wheel.
Background: So about 6 months ago I realized my CV boot was torn. I tried to replace CV joint, but they sent wrong joint(Meyle) so we ended up trying to force it onto the CV shaft for like an hour before giving up. I remember one of my BMW Technician buddies literally smashing the joint onto the shaft with a plastic mallet but it just wouldn't go over the circlip.
We ended up just replacing the boot and putting the old CV joint back on, but we didn't have any extra grease to put in it because we had already put it into the new joint that wouldn't fit. Since then I've basically tried everything I can think of, including:
-Balanced and Road Forced
-Laser Alignment
-Replaced all 4 tires
-Fixed bent rims
-Refreshed suspension/steering:
-All new F+R LCA bushings
-New inner/outer tie rods
-New ball joints
-New sway bar bushings
-New strut top mounts
So what the hell is keeping her from being smooth as butter over 90? Did we screw up the shaft by beating on it? Or is it just vibrating from the lack of grease/damage from torn boot? Was I supposed to align the shaft when putting it back on or something?

Heard a clunk and then have the car feel like something from the inside is trying to stop it when using the paddle shifters in manual mode. Specifically when downshifting from 2 to 1. By the way I did a slight throttle blip, I have done this before with very smooth results but this time it really scared me, I though the transmission broke for a second; when the car did what it did.

I have a 07 Ls460. When downshifting from second to first there is a click that is sometimes a clunk. Lexus has replaced the trans with no change. They have cleaned and lubricated rear suspension bolts and replaced the rear shocks and springs and the differential mount. Again, no change.
This started at about 80k and continues at 123k. They have checked motor mounts, transmission mount and repacked the driveshaft spline. When the car is lifted into the air and the weight is off the suspension the noise will go away for a few days.
This noise has also been heard occasionally when rolling off the gas between 20/30 mph and then reapplying throttle. Lexus mechanics and area reps are at a loss to diagnosis. I have driven a 2008 loaner and it had the same noise.

I just heard that the auto transmission is acting up it won't go into high gear, and is sluggish at shifting in the lower gears. It all started with a clunk noise when downshifting at a light. Sensor failure? Band failure?

38k and 15 months old. Runs fine except...
Can be in cruise or not, tow/haul or not, but need to be pulling a decent hill with 7k+ trailer. Running level with air bags. Regardless of speed, cruising at 50, 58, or 65, beginning incline and turbo boost builds normally to maintain speed to the point when it needs to downshift. BAM!!, not just a clunk, 90% of the time- scares the hell out of me. I can make it do it on an incline empty, but it it difficult. If because initial speed is 50ish, a second downshift to 4th may be needed. A bang only 50% of the time.
No codes.
Regardless of the degree incline, (toughest in the NC/KY areas is 6-7% grade, can avoid harsh shift by backing off on throttle and manually downshifting to 5th or 4th, depending upon speed.
Can "make" it do it on level terrain with 7k trailer if I slowly back off throttle and slow from 65 to 50 or so and punch it, but not too hard. Too hard and it goes to 4th, usually with just a modest clunk. Just right and I get 5th with a loud, and I mean loud BAM. Even the tech was impressed.
Afraid to hook up my 17k 5er and take off for the next 3 months, which is the reason I bought the truck to replace my 11...
Carrier bearing has grease coming out of it (400k on various duallies and never seen this), but dealer says not an issue.
Ford told dealer that it had no idea, and advised tech to do a lot of pin point electrical testing and everything checks out. Next stop is the inner workings of transmission.
I have been without it and work for 3 days because of backlog. Running two day load tomorrow, then back in for tranny work.

When upshifting into 5th gear there is a slight hesitation before actually going into gear? I do not have this issue with any other gears!

I've noticed a bit of noise when the R is in manual mode, upshifting from 1st to 2nd. It can hear a bit of a clunk with the windows up or down (obviously a bit more pronounced windows down). It never makes the noise in "D", and maybe 50% of the time in "M".
No other noises that I can tell, from upshifts to downshifts in any other gear. Just the manual 1st to 2nd shift. Trans seems smooth, already had a Mech replacement.
Should I be concerned, or even take it to the dealer? I'd take a video, but I dont' think the mic on my phone would even pick up the sound. It's definitely there though...

I just installed Neuspeed Springs and my car is taking a "clunk" in the front spring, I went back and I replaced the strut bearing mount and the noise still continues.

I just finished my suspension refresh and I notice a noise coming from the front end. I really think that my end-links are the source of the noise. When I push the car up and down from the center, no noise. When I shake the car from right to left, I can ear a clunk coming from my end-links.

I have been hearing/feeling an occasional noise from my front end. Not a low-freq "thud" more like something sticky. Usually at very slow speeds, when turning the wheel, going over uneven pavement, or pulling away from stop. It sounds and feels to me like a steering rack issue, but maybe CV joints? 40k miles, 6-spd manual no mods.

I was driving my car and forgot to turn esp off, hit boost in 2nd gear and the traction control did it's thing. didn't notice anything while driving so I didn't think anything of it. once I got home to back into my driveway, I noticed that when I turn the wheel sharply (at a standstill or very low speed) there's a clunking coming from what seems like the passenger front. I'm hoping it's not the inner cv. What it could be? I know for a fact it started right after the traction control kicked on so that's what caused it.

So I've always had a clunk coming from the front end of my car since I bought it last year. It happens almost every time the suspension flexes. I'm pretty sure my steering is okay as I can turn the wheel quickly and/or forcefully back and forth with the car either on or off and there is no noise; the steering feels solid.
Here is the list of things I have done so far:
-Poly sway bar bushings
-Poly end link bushings
-Poly dog bone bushings
-Cup kit (Springs and shocks)Upper strut mounts & bearings
-Ball joints
-Raxles
After a quick look at my Bentley manual, it seems the only things left to do are control arm bushings (most likely in my mind) and sub frame bushings (less likely). Is there anything else I should check for possible causes that I'm missing?

My R's only got 5,400 miles on it and I just lowered it Saturday on H&R Springs and when I turn my steering wheel like 3/4 either way it makes like a clunk noise at lower speeds only....any other part besides strut top mounts and bearings? It sounds like its coming from the right front.

I have a 24v gti, but this deals with the front suspension. I replaced my stock suspension with a set of coils and also my drivers side axle with a raxle. Even have new strut mounts, bearings and R32 rear control arm bushings.
When I drive slowly like coming out of the drive way I can hear a continuous clunk happening 1/2 second to 1 sec apart coming from the front suspension, but after I drive a min or 2 it goes away??

So after a few months of having these springs on the car I noticed that as of recently there is a loud CLUNK coming from the front shock area. This specifically occurs in the morning while backing up out of the driveway, after the car has been sitting for a long time. This happens at low speed as soon as i turn the wheel to align with the street. To make matters worst, there seems to be a more persistent noise coming from the rear whenever i go over any sort of rough surface, almost as if something is loose . I took it to my local VW to see if they could replicate the noises and they did. I did not mention I had springs on the car (VWR), should I have ? What could be causing these issues?

I've got a "clunk" in my front passenger side suspension. I'm running stock struts with H&R sport springs that I put in about 10,000-15,000kms ago. The clunk is inconsistent and seems to only happen in the parking lot when I'm backing out of a stall. When I pull forward, I get a couple clunks coming from that side? Could this be tie-rod?
