Golf/GTI VII :: 2015 - Strut Pucks On?
Jun 22, 2014
What's the deal with these stupid strut pucks on the '15 GTI's. I mean I have been reading on these forums so much about these strut pucks. I would figure if volkswagen would be get their mechanics who inspect the vehicles would at least have the decency to thoroughly jack up the vehicle, carefully find the pucks inside the struts and take them out before the car is delivered to any customer. there is no reason why the customer who just bought a MK7 GTI drive it home and they have to jack up the vehicle themselves to find these strut pucks. it doesn't make any sense. Hopefully VW won't have these darn things in 2015 or 2016.

I was looking for something to cover the four holes in the bed that my fifth wheel hitch fits into. The hole size is 2 inches. What is the diameter of the ford OEM pucks that come with the fifth wheel prep package. By the way I really like my new 18K pull-rite super glide hitch worked great my first trip with new fifth wheel. Pulled about 13000 lb trailer on 1200 mile from central California up to Grants Pass, Oregon and back down the coast. I used 93 gallons and got an average of 12.3 mile per gallon. Truck worked like a charm. No issues.

So I just picked up this mk4 it had D2 coilovers I believe and I'm putting racelands but I'm having trouble actually fitting the strut to the beam it doesn't want to go in because it's too small? So how would I open it up ?

Hear struts on rough surfaces in parking lots or other rough surfaces at low speeds? It is something that I started noticing and I'm not sure if it is a standard VW thing or if it indicating some sort of premature failure. My previous car didn't do that (wrx) but I know every car manufacturer is a bit different.
Having gone through dealerships in the past for sounds that were not that loud I don't feel it is worthy of a dealership trip unless it gets more audible. They usually just say they heard nothing and everyone tells me I am ...
I want to get VWR springs but if I can hear the struts now it makes me wonder if it will accelerate failure. As stated above, I don't notice it at any normal driving speed, just slow maneuvering on rougher surfaces.

The strut is lose, I can spin it hardly but I can't get the rotor to go down far enough, already disassembled the control arm but it didn't do much considering I couldn't move it forward or backward so the rotor still sits on a corner or the arm. I did the drivers side already.

Are the bolt and nut holding the strut to the wheel bearing housing the only things that need to be replaced when removing the strut? Anything else I should change while I'm in there? So far I'm just doing 034 strut mounts and bearings.

This thread is about suspension though. Ever since installing my B&G coils my car has been making all kinds of funny noises. Originally I realized that the the top nuts for my struts were not nearly tight enough... which led to one of my struts having about 6 or 7 threads completely stripped from rubbing against the mount and not being tight. Completely disassembled the front shocks, made sure everything was kosher, and filled the passenger side with some washers before tightening everything down like a mofo (by hand, no air!) a few weeks ago. All was good.
Now, flash forward to now and it rattles all the time. Driving straight is usually when it makes noise. I immediately assumed it was loose top bolts as I had the same noise previously. I went down to buy some loctite and more tools so I could do the fix myself. Upon inspection, the bolts are still tight as hell. Tightening them rotates the spring, I can feel feel it pop if I rotate my ratchet far enough as the spring finally gives from rotation.
I checked the sway bars, axels, etc.... and nothing. I even went so far as to wrap everything down there in blue masking tape, put the wheel back on, drove around a while (made the noise like 20 times) and then jacked the car up to look again... not a single scratch on the tape. Some of it was still not even 100% pressed down. So my axels, sway bar, etc... have nothing to do with this (at least rubbing wise).
After doing all kinds of research both here and in the MKV forum, I've decided that this is probably due to foobar strut bearings. I ordered some SKF ones from DBC and hope that they come soon... but until then I am still uneasy (duh, this car is my life) and can't stop obsessively thinking about it. Now I am beginning to doubt that it is the strut bearings because most people seem to only have the noise issue when turning their wheels. I have the noise issue all of the time, except when I am driving on the freeway.

Lately and quite randomly while going over bumps I am hearing a noise that sounds like one of my struts is loose. I checked both struts to make sure that they were solid in place and they are. I go over several bumps in my neighborhood and I can hear the noise, but at the same time I went over a speed bump fast and when the car came down there was no noise. Today I put the car in neutral to let it roll and drove over some reflectors with my right tire and the noise was a bit worse. I took it apart again just now and nothing seems out of the ordinary.

I just got a H&R Sport Cup Kit installed along with new strut mounts and bearings on my 2001 GTi. My front right side strut is making a popping sound whenever I accelerate or brake slightly hard and sometimes when hitting a bump in the road. What's causing the sound? Could it be I have a bad strut? Also the left side is fine and doesn't make noise at all..

Installed fk coils about 5k miles ago. I replaced the strut mounts and the bearing with new oem. I am not "slammed" by any means but a very mild drop. I noticed the strut caps are raised a little under load, can this be the cause of the clunking sound? The strut cap going down on bumps etc? Or could the strut mounts have already failed. Seems a bit premature to me. I guess I'll have to take it apart and take a peek.

Was tinkering on my car this morning, and at first noticed one side had a bigger gap than the other. Ok, I really need to change strut mount bushings, no big deal. Then I actually looked closer, and they both have some lean to them, but the drivers side is much more than the other one. Is this normal? I've never noticed any play in control arm bushings or anything. So what could be causing this? I would assume they are meant to sit flat but maybe not?

So everything is tight and aligned and all good, but I'm getting this deep squeaking rub noise coming from my front upper strut mounts, but all the bolts are tight, yet it looks like the metal ring inside the strut tower moves a little up and down when you rock the car a bit. And I can feel the rubbing vibration and movement of the mount when I put my hand on/in the strut tower while the car is rocked.

I just installed my brand new coil overs. I went to drop the car from the jack and as it lowered I noticed my strut mount fully popped out of the strut mount housing. I can't even close my hood. Did I do something wrong?

Setup: WRD Street Advantage Coilover kit. Installed and sit at 24.75" all around. 034 Density mounts and new bearings. 19,xxx mi.
7 weeks ago I installed WRD Street Advantage coils. The install went great, no problems. Drove a week or so and decided to replace the strut mounts with 034's density strut mounts and new bearing to get rid of the creaking sound at low speed. Ordered them and put them on this weekend. After driving it I realized the creaking of the old weaker strut mount was gone. However, I inherited a rough clunking or knocking sound (as if something is loose and moving around), which seems to be coming from my passenger side. This happens at all speeds and not specific to turning the wheel. I unistalled/reinstalled everything in the front 4 times and went through everything with a fine tooth comb, but can't find anything loose. All bolts are torqued to spec.
I even removed the sway bar end links and drove it, still there. So it's not the end links. I also tried using the OEM endlinks which are longer than the ones from WRD to increase the space between the axle and the sway bar, possibly thinking it was hitting and causing the noise. No luck, still there. The only thing I noticed is that with the car on jack stands the strut mount is tight to the body but I still have slight play in the spring and it's perch. Is that normal? I'm assuming under load it's tight again. So the only variable in my situation is the new Density Mounts and bearing, can these cause heightened noises due to the increased heardness of the mounts?

I have never had this to happen. The oil cam worked loose on my 2015 TSI and oil covered the engine bay. I don't know if this could cause any damage. I had only driven it from the gas station a mile and it happened in the driveway at home when I stopped. Smells terrible. I did not even mess with the gas cap when I gassed up.

I have a new 2015 VW Golf TSI Auto, it only has about 1200kms on it. This morning my girlfriend was driving it to the train station and the "EPC" and engine light both came on, she said it was very sluggish after that. I went to pickup the car and it drove normally without any lights on to the dealer - they told me to just monitor it and if it comes back on then I should schedule an appointment. I am just worried because this car is brand new.

Some replaced the rear shock absorbers with Bilstein B$ OEM shocks. One claimed it fixed the problem.
VW dealers and mechanic claim that is normal for the car , no repair necessary?!!?

My 2015 GTI is making rattling noises over small bumps. It sounds like a loose ball joint or tie rod end. I had the sway bar link recall work done. It's definitely a loose metal part rattle. My dealer can't look at it until next Tuesday.

I've seen a copy of the order guide, and I still can't figure out what the differences between 2015 and 2016 GTIs is going to be. Maybe I'm not reading it correctly, but it doesn't look much, if any different.

I got a 2015 GTI Autobahn, DSG, 5 door. Took delivery in early June. Love the car, has been amazing so far. Coming from an MKV GTI, a nice bump in power. One issue I've had is that I hear a noise coming when accelerating. It's almost like a 'whirring' noise. Not sure if this is what the new EA888 sounds like. I didn't notice this from the old MKV. I don't think it's a turbo whistle...I'm not going very fast. The car is in D when it happens. anything faster than 60km/h (40mph), I don't hear the noise, just 'normal' engine noise.
Is this how just MKVII's sound? I bought the car without test driving it...so not sure if this is an expected sound?
