Golf/GTI VII :: 2005 - Driver Side Rattle?
Sep 26, 2014
I have a 2015 GTI Autobahn DSG with about 3,000 miles that has always had a rattle that is more feel than noise coming from the driver side wheel area. The rattle is more "thunky" than "clattery" and I can best describe the feeling as if the lug nuts were all backed off 2 turns from tight and the wheel was flopping around over bumps. Strut Pucks are removed (I jacked it up and checked) and the car has been in for the strut recall.
The dealer did not fix the fuel line issue as they didn't have any parts but I don't think that is the issue here. I had the dealer check out this rattle but they said it was normal DSG operation. However, I only notice it on the driver side (both while driving and as a passenger) and it is pretty noticeable in stop and go traffic from 5-30 mph.

I have a rattle coming from my drivers door now that just started. It is quite annoying but I would rather fix it myself rather than bring it into the dealer.

I just replaced both driver and passenger side window regulators (they were about to fail but still worked) Prior to replacing them, my driver side door had a faint, yet repetitive rattle. I was under the impression a new window regulator would fix the issue. Needless to say, it didn't solve the rattle problem (though the windows are now firmly in place). I suspect it's coming from within the door panel itself. I've peeked inside the door panel without fully removing it and could find nothing. Maybe it's something loose that needs to be secured? I swear it's like Chinese water torture hearing that rattle and it's driving me nuts.
Edit: Holding the glass down, or holding/pushing on the door panel does nothing at all.

I was removing my rear headrests, for the first time, from my 2012 GTI today and noticed that both the passenger and driver side headrests rattle. It sounds like there is a broken piece of plastic rolling around in each of them. I have been hearing a rattle since I purchased the car new 6 months ago so maybe I have found the issue.

So I got a new rattle that I cannot find the source of. It's definitely coming from around/above the pedals. For some reason you only hear it when your cruising around 60. It doesn't increase with speed. It actually sounds more like a ticking. I've tightened the plastic guard above the pedals and the dead pedal with no results.

I have a rattle coming from the drivers front area. I'm not 100% sure but I think it might go away in warm weather. I had a tech drive along with me once a few weeks ago, but we couldn't hear it that afternoon. Yesterday afternoon it warmed up to around 65ish and I couldn't hear it. I only hear it at slow speeds (5-10mph) and only when rolling over light bumps, anything moderate to heavy and it's not discernible.
This is my first try at recording it and I think it sounds a bit less squeaky more rattley in person. Maybe more like a lost screwdriver in the a body panel or engine bay or something Or a loose strut? Or a loose rotor? (doesn't seem possible) Or the short shifter bouncing? (I have a forge SS, and once I was poking around looking for something loose in the engine bay and I jiggled that and the sound seemed close, but I don't see how that would be it.
Some good examples in the clip are at 15s, 28s, 52s, and 1:02s

Minor rattle when going over bumps! It sounds like drivers side rear... I have had a chance to check of anything in the car was loose (spare tire tools etc...). Found my problem, now I just have to confirm its the rear driver seat belt not resting correctly.
1. Intermittent rattle behind driver
-check rear seat belts that they are actually resting on the cushion loop.
-check rear passenger window switch.
-check door strikers
2. Bass rattle front doors
-check with dealer
3. Rattle at rear of car
-check spare wheel and tool compartment.

My wife's 2011 Gti (31k miles, dsg) has developed a bad rattle vibration at idle. It goes away when you press on the gas. At first first I thought it was just a bit of plastic rattling in the wheel well or engine bay, but now I'm suspecting the engine. It's coming from the drivers side and it sounds like the 'TSI rattle' turned up to 11. It's intermittent, but worse when it's cold.
Engine mount? Chain guides going going bad? I will try to get a video of the sound today.

So I had a persistent dash rattle that would mysteriously go away when my car was brought in for service. I took it in a 2nd time, again nothing. So I took the service adviser for a drive until it showed up... then it wouldn't stop.
Shop foreman drove it right after we got back and this time he heard it too... took 4 hours to re/re the dash trim and radio but they found some HVAC ducting was loose from the factory ( b4 work??) and rattling around. They put it back together and apparently put tape around the joints (like you would in your home - I guess from the factory the pipes just snap together). Car is much quieter now. Just hoping this issue doesn't come back in 4-5 years when the tape falls off? It also stopped an intermittent rattle coming from the right side of the dash.
There was also a wind buffeting noise around the drivers side doors. There is a TSB to address this now for 4-door cars. A minor adjustment to a seal and I was good to go, again much quieter. I'll have to see how it fairs at 130kph on the highway, but the buffeting I could already hear at 90kph is completely gone.

In the last few months my car has been making this crazy medium-weight rattle sometimes, meaning it doesn't sound like something really light doing it and it doesn't sound like something heavy doing it either. Its "history" went like this:
Noticed this sound that really seemed to be coming from the driver-side front, in the wheel well area, checked it out. Nothing obvious. Had the front of the car on ramps a couple of times, poking, prodding, grabbing/shaking things. All is tight. Then had it on stands; same routine, same results. It got a bit worse over time, though it doesn't ALWAYS do it! Sometimes it's quiet forever (on 90-minute drive last week, nothing). This evening, out for 20 minutes, lotsa racket. So it comes and goes. Nothing under the hood seems amiss, either.
At first it seemed to only be present when moving, like something rubbing or dragging on a tire. Nope. Then it seemed to be related to engine speed, like some under-hood component checking out and starting to fuss. That seems not to be the case anymore, either. Now, I've been able to discern that it's something come loose and VIBRATING (I'm pretty sure -- it just sounds like that), but I don't know what yet. I now hear it at idle, sitting at a light (sometimes) and it's definitely worse on rougher pavement than on smoother pavement.
A while back I realized that it must not be coming from outside and under the car after all, because putting the window/s down results in not being able to hear it at all, rather than being able to hear it better. This is true even at 5 mph, rolling along on a quiet street entirely for diagnostic purposes.
Earlier this evening (during the 20-minute out n' about), I note that it's not coming from the driver side anymore; it's more like the whole front of the car. Really seems to be under the dash. When I first figured out that it's NOT outside/underneath, I took off the panel under that side (three Torx screws) and poked around. Didn't find anything obviously loose, etc. I've ruled out the glovebox, its door, and the center console, by holding on to each while rolling. The sound is not quite in the correct spot to be from any of these, either.

While driving, the drive side door makes a creaking/clunking/rattle/popping noise. Its so damn annoying. It's all the time, if you roll the window down it doesn't do it as loud, but its cold out..

My GLX 5 sp. wagon (>120K miles) has performed superbly. However, I've recently noticed a "rattle" in the driver's side front suspension. I had the constant velocity joints replaced about a year ago (boots cracked/leaking before I caught it...) and while replacing them, I had them do the front control arms but NOT the struts. When the rattle first started, it was only noticeable while turning right on rough pavement in cold weather. And, I jacked us the front end and checked the suspension parts visually and by yanking on them manually - no visible or detectable "play". And, whatever it is doesn't seem to be affecting the ride appreciably and handling is the same as always - no wobble or drift. Would the strut itself - or strut mounts - cause such a rattle?

I have a 2011 sonata with 72000 Km on it. As I am driving at highway speeds I notice a rattle from the drivers side towards the door. I can't quite locate where but have tried pushing trim and I can't stop it. Took it to the dealer and was told there was nothing wrong and no rattle. On a trip yesterday I noticed the rattle stopped as I braked. So I then applied very light pressure on the brake pedal. So light it did not come off cruise. And the rattle stops. What is the likely cause? I want to be prepared with some ideas when I take it back to the dealer.

I recently purchased a certified pre owned 11 350 AWD and am noticing a dash rattle on the drivers side. It seems to be on the dash above the tachometer. If I apply pressure(w my hand) it seems to go away.
I know rattles come in all shapes and sizes but where would you start?
Here's a night pic: Only had it a few weeks.
This is what I have done so far.
20/10 Tint
6K Low Beam Headlights
LED Parking Lights
Quick question: By replacing the HID low beam bulb do I lose the headlight turning adjustment feature. It doesn't appear to work now.

I have a rattle in my drivers side front hub. I primarily hear it when I hit small bumps. With the hubs locked and in 2wd, the rattle is gone. Could this be just the hubs where replacing them with warn manuals would fix it or is it likely more involved?

My 2014 Camry XLE has the drivers side door rattle. What is it inside the door that rattles?
In comparison, my 2012 Corolla LE was built in Japan and was just as quiet as a mouse inside.
This is the only rattle. So small and so persistent. It comes and goes, sometimes lasting an hour, but when it is gone it is definitely gone.
I can tap on the panels, open and shut the door, run the window up and down and yet it continues to rattle. Then, all on its own, it disappears. Sometimes for days without making a peep or a squeak.
It is not the Seat belt, nor is it anything attached to the seat belt. (If anything should be rattling it should be at the seat belt pillar adjustment).

I've noticed this of late. An irritating rattle from the driver's side door, but the key is that it only happens when the temps are cool. If the car is warm/hot due to being out in the sun, there is no rattle. This tells me it's something resolved when heat makes parts expand, but if I can stick something in that will stop the rattle altogether, I'd prefer to fix it.

My 2012 Prius Plug-In has a rattle in the drivers door. It is only noticed when I am driving slow in EV, perhaps 25 to 40 mph, with the drivers door window up. Put the window down an inch and it goes away. Warmer weather seems to increase the rattle.
