I just noticed that at idle there is an obvious but not really loud whistling sound. I have no CEL. Is there any simple way to check for a vacuum leak or something? Maybe something through VCDS?
View 6 RepliesHigh pitched noise when car is running at idle and when not on the gas. Whenever I accelerate it goes away. Pitch/Loudness seems to be higher with RPM's. Could be coming from front of the car.

I read some other posts about this and fully disconnected my aftermarket radio. I'm pretty sure it is not a ground loop as no power to HU shouldn't still create the whistle.
What I have:
I have an EIP aftermarket street exhaust. I checked the exhaust to see about the flapper, but I don't believe I have any of the items involved - maybe I'm wrong. After some more reading it sounds like a vacuum leak as it goes away upon acceleration. I need identifying what vacuum hoses are still in place/clamped off with having an aftermarket exhaust.
I do not have a CAI, just a K&N drop in.
4601 DBP, just under 35k on it. At idle, i hear a slight whistling almost like squeaking. I took it to my independent tech and he showed me that if he removed the dipstick for a second while idling, the noise stopped, due to lack of vaccuum, so he believes its in the pcv system. I am still under powertrain and obviously federal emissions 8yr 80,000. Go start your R and listen at idle inside the car for a whistle or squeaking noise that seems like its inside the passenger dash.

View 11 RepliesI am having an issue with my 2002 GTI 1.8T. I have tried searching for an answer to this, and found a couple things saying maybe it could be the secondary air pump but wanted to get more opinions before I go shell out money to chase this problem.
When I start up the car in the morning after having it sit overnight, the car does the normal thing where it increases rpm's to about 1100 to warm it up. During this a loud "whistling" noise can be heard. Once the car is warmed up a little bit, the rpm's decline to about 900, and the whistling sound goes away. When this happens though it almost sounds as if a valve or something is closing causing the noise to go away.
Also, I am unsure if this is related to this, sometimes when I am driving, I will be accelerating and the car seems to stop accelerating as strong as it was, boost goes down from around 8 or 9 psi to about 4 and I seem to lose power as if I had let off the gas some. When I put my foot further down the car accelerates harder again and boost goes back up.
I have already changed spark plugs, cleaned MAF sensor, and run the 3m 3 part engine cleaning kit through it.
My first VW was a 2001 4-door Golf (Silver), traded to 2003 GTI (Silverstone), traded to 2006 Jetta Wagon (Blue). Then the wagon was traded for a SUV. Well last week, I have decided to pick up my 4th VW. It's a 2012 CSG 4-door GTI.
After driving the car for a week, and putting on 350 miles, I heard a high pitch continous "whistling" sound from the engine. Took the car to the dealer this afternoon. Tech came out and loosened the coolant reservoir. I heard a "pooof", sound of air build up. The tech said VW is aware of this problem. Something to do with the water pump bearing. It has to be replaced. They took the car in to replace the water pump.
I have a 06 2.0T and noticed last night when stopped at a light, a loud whistling noise was heard. When I would accelerate, the noise would go away but when coasting, it could be heard again. Is this the diverter valve? Is it easy to change?

View 9 RepliesI just noticed this ever since it started to warm up outside. Usually between 4-6 ticks (the lights that light up when you change the power), the whistling is the loudest. It's a very annoying noise and I can't pinpoint the issue. I was thinking it was maybe just some air turbulence within the vent, but even when I put the air to go on the floor only, I still hear it. Wondering if it's something worth taking my car in for. My gf and mom heard the noise as well, so I'm not going crazy. I also compared the air conditioning to my gf's Elantra GT an hers was completely quiet, with no whistling noise. Have this whistling noise with their air conditioning on? It's not really "loud", but it's clearly there. Really is noticeable when I switch between power levels of the air condition.

It's very strange. The heat seems to work just fine and I have no VAG COM errors. What this could be or how to fix it?
View 19 RepliesI have an 05 Excursion that has a rebuilt stock turbo on it, installed before I bought the truck. I installed a 3.5" downpipe/4" after exhaust with no cat and no muffler about a year and a half ago. It seems like suddenly my truck is whistling a lot more than it used to at idle. I'm not unhappy about the whistle sound, just wondering if this is possible (i.e. turbo vanes sticking or something else) or if I'm imagining things.
View 5 RepliesI have noticed that at highway speeds, 55 + MPH, there is a whistling sound coming from outside the car, I can hear it more on the driver's side of the car. I checked all the rubber parts on the two doors and everything seemed to be in place. Is this normal? I probably only noticed it because I had the volume on the radio really low, but the whistling sound sounds like it's right in my ear. I got my roof wrapped so I thought maybe part of the vinyl came up and was causing that but the wrap is sound in place.

Kind of alarming considering the car is about 1 year old with 12k miles. Taking it to the dealer for a tire rotation and a oil change next week, I'll have them check it out then.

The whistling sound is fairly straightforward but there are little details that are weird.
I noticed maybe 1 or 2 weeks ago that the car would make a whistling sound, not a high pitched one but a fairly middle-high sort of tone. It would make this sound when I put the car and drive and maybe just start to gas it but NOT all of the time. By the time I am at a regular speed it has gone.
But sometimes when I slow down the sound will return and go away when the car has come to a complete stop. But this is not a constant pattern. It is on and off. Only recently could I say it has become more frequent but even then I hesitate.
Also the sound seems to definitely be coming from under the hood possibly from the back of the car but I think front may be more likely.
I read briefly on a few car/car repair forums that it could be anything from an AC compressor going out, a vacuum leak, fan belt, bad water pump, among others. I tried turning the AC on, which I have kept off for pretty much the entirety of the Summer and I heard the sound only once when I resumed driving. BUT, when I revved, the engine seemed noticeably louder; almost like it was laboring though the car drove just fine.
One other thing. Before it sounded as if the origin of the whistle was coming from the passenger side of the car. Just as of today it sounded as though it originated from the driver's side. So I'm really confused now. The car seems to drive just fine and the engine the day before sounded good if not great. I'm hoping it is nothing related to the engine.
*Few Notes:The oil was changed in June. The tires were replaced recently. Though the sound started before this. I was however driving on a really bad passenger side tire for a while.There is a short on the panel that contains the left turn signal. The bad bulb was changed and I plan to find a new panel as soon as Monday.
I have a 2007 passat and it makes a whistling sound while idling or when I am driving except for when I am actually pressing the gas. Additionally the EPC and check Engine lights came on. What the problem could be? This is my first VW and I am really just use to Honda.

Sometimes, she'll rear and balk continuously --- even more loudly --- depending on the outside temperature and her level of activity. I need to get her fixed, but live in the New York City area and am a broke graduate student terrified of getting ripped off. Do you think it's just belts? My transmission (sometimes I can feel the noise in my gear shifter)?
