Have a whirring/wheel bearing metallic rubbing noise at 70-80 mph, 6th gear (manual transmission). It's hard to pinpoint the location but it's from the engine area! I heard about water pump failures but thought I'd hear that all the time not just at speed... MKVI GTI ...
View 15 Replies2006 Ford Focus with an ongoing wheel bearing issue. Earlier this year I heard a repetitive whirring noise from the back right, figured it was a bearing, brought the car in for repair. The shop confirmed and replaced the bearing.
3 months later, I heard the same noise. I brought the car to a different shop (I had moved since) and they confirmed that it was the same wheel bearing that had just been replaced. They said it may have been faulty. They attempted to repair it, but the noise persisted. They actually ended up putting the new bearing on the driver's side rear and swapping out the old bearing that was on the driver's side with old one on the passenger's, which is the only way they could get the noise to stop entirely. (This confused me)
Fast forward two months and the noise is back on the same side - passenger's rear. The shop is telling me that it is unrelated since the new bearing was technically put on the other side, however, I am thinking that the same thing keeps happening whenever any bearing is put in the same spot (passenger rear). My question is as follows - what could be happening in the passenger rear that would cause bearings to continually fail?
So after doing wheel bearings in the car. both front and back. I'm still getting the "wheel-bearing hum" sound if you will. Don't know how this can be possible with all brand new wheel bearings and hub in the front passenger side. other hubs were fine. I do need tires which will be ordered soon/ alignment im sure.

So I jacked up the rear and found that there was play in the passenger rear wheel.. The bolt holding the hub together was tight..
View 2 RepliesOk, so my 2007 F150 Lariat super crew cab has been at the dealership for a week now with them claiming that a part is on back order. How hard is it for them to get in a right front axle?? Granted, it was in there for other stuff too (which they can not give me a straight answer on if they fixed or not cause they are claiming the technician hasn't done the write up on it yet). My main concern is that they are screwing me around or that something happened to my truck. I am planning on stopping by there on Wed. morning after I get out of work.
Are these trucks known for bad front axles or was there some kind of a big recall on them?
Other things it went in for was the radio having the CD's cycle through when you first start up the truck, but does not happen like that all the time. Black plastic driver side front door hinge is cracked exposing the metal reinforcing part. Whirring/bearing type noise when you first start up the truck when it is cold and sits overnight (which they claim they can't hear yet waited to bring the truck inside and check it out at 3PM when they had the truck overnight from the night before when I dropped it off.) and the front driveshaft not fully disengaging when the truck is in 2wd. Almost seems like the vacuum locking hubs are still engaged.
I replaced all the bearings and put in a rebuilt transmission and still have bearing like noise , seems like the front, directly increasing with speed . Same in neutral, no change with turning or breaking. Getting worse over the past few months.
View 1 RepliesI have a bad wheel bearing but on the highway my steering wheel shakes. It is only on the highway not down residential streets. I'm pretty sure it is the driver's side wheel bearing. I already balanced my wheels and everything.
View 5 RepliesSo on my girlfriends 2000 echo I get the classic bad wheel bearing noise/vibration on the front left (driver side) wheel. Worsens under load (right turn) and goes away when unloaded (left turn). I've replaced left side bearing, CV axle, brake rotors/pads and the noise still persists. My next thought is maybe the ball joint but humming/vibration tells me something out of rotational balance. Bearing in the transmission? I don't know. I'm stuck.
View 5 RepliesMy girlfriend and I just bought a 2011 a few weeks ago. We test drove it a couple times ourselves, and had our mechanic take a look at it and drive it also. Everything looked and sounded good. Not sure how much it matters, but it's a Certified Used as well.
A couple days ago, returning from a 45-minute drive which included some short stretches of gravel road, I noticed an oscillating sound. It's definitely not a noise that was there when we bought the car. Unfortunately, my cell is apparently bad at capturing audio, so hopefully my description will be enough.
The noise is very faint, almost inaudible, at low speeds. Between 30 and 35 mph it gets much louder, peaking at about 33. There's some vibration through the accelerator pedal also. Above 35, it fades pretty quickly and I can't really hear it at 50. The sound itself is 3 beats on, 1 beat off, about every second. There's a slight difference in pitch between each beat.
If that isn't enough to go on, let me know and I'll give the recording another shot and upload it if the noise is audible.
I took my car in for what to me sounded like a wheel bearing noise. Dealer thinks the culprit is brakes need to be replaced. In addition to needing brakes I was told i need a throttle body service (service agent says it's needed every 15k for carbon buildup) and also a fuel tank vent filter ("needed every 2 yrs") are these legit repairs I should perform or is this a dealer shake down?
View 15 RepliesAlright a few weeks ago I had right wheel bearing replaced...noise still there... Had tires balanced, rotated, checked for capping. The dealer hears the noise but can't tell where its coming from.
The sound is classic wheel bearing Whoop Whoop Whoop and I can control it when I turn to the wheel right and left. This will be the fourth time its in the shop.
3 days ago I noticed a whirring noise coming from inside the front nearside wheel arch . I thought that it would stop when the engine cooled down but on checking at various times over the Easter weekend it runs continuously . It is not the radiator fan , more like a motor or relay that won't shut off .
View 14 RepliesI have a noise I think maybe the front end but not sure it sounds like a wheel bearing noise it's becomes faster as I accelerate it does not increase in noise and by the time you get to 20 mph it disappears, it also disappears when ou tap the brakes or barely push the brakes I had the brakes inspected it's good had the wheel bearings check out even though they said it's a sealed bearing unit they did their test and the wheels made no noise...My car is a 2005 Camry 4 cyl.
View 11 RepliesGot a "wheel bearing noise" emitting from my 2007 Sonata with a 5spd manual. I've replaced front and back wheel bearings with no noticeable change in the noise. I then rotated the tires with same result ...no noise difference. Lastly after much reading I was convinced one or both of my cv axles were at fault so I replaced both of them and unfortunately the moaning roaring noise is still very much there. The only thing I can think of at this point is that one or both of the transmission's CV support bearing is bad. I've depended on this car for a long time and it has given me great service but with 170K miles on the clock I'm afraid the tranny is going to give out and strand me in possibly a unsavory part of town..
View 4 RepliesSo just to sum it up. Past few days I had been hearing a grinding/clicking noise from my left front tire. I had an accident on that side a few months back. Went to the mechanic and they said it is most probably the wheel bearing and possible the hub also.
They took it apart and changed the wheel bearing. After two days of getting the wheel bearing changed the noise is back. It is not nearly as loud but it is definitely there.
What it could be? Could it be the hub itself? I have a 07 Sonata with 100k+ miles on it
So my ranger was having a textbook wheel-bearing noise at around 50mph....when I turned to the right the noise went away implicating a passenger side wheel bearing.
So I replaced both of the hub bearings on the pass side and noticed that the front axle shaft u-joint right behind the spindle was really bad and was going to change it but couldn't get the spindle off so I said screw it.
Took it for a drive and the noise is still there. Could a worn u-joint possible replicate a wheel bearing noise? I am used to them making a clicking/popping noise while turning when they're bad, but not a whirring sound.
1993 ranger 4x4 manual locking hubs.
I have a 2006 VW Golf with 140,000 miles. Last week took it to the shop to have a wheel bearing replaced. Mechanic also replaced the wheel hub. When I left the shop I discovered a new problem that had not previously been there. Now the Anti-lock brakes are kicking in at the very end of a soft stop on smooth, dry roads and even in my garage. This happens about 20% of the time, but never during a hard stop. I took it back to the shop on Monday and mechanic could not find anything and was perplexed. The question is whether the ABS sensor could have been damaged during repairs and is the car safe to drive?
View 14 RepliesSince the Prius is my wife's primary car, I can go a long time without driving. I recently have been driving it more, and it seems to me that it has the sounds of a failing wheel bearing. Between about 30-40 MPH there seems to be a distinct rotational noise that sounds to me like a loud wheel bearing from the front end. The sound seems to get quieter as I go faster, and at 60 mph + it seems normal.
My wife didn't notice any difference, but she drives the car everyday so maybe she didn't notice the gradual increase in noise. I know it's not tire related, because I just swapped tires. When I did, I didn't feel any play in the front bearings or feel any roughness when the wheels were rotated.
