Golf/GTI VI :: Vibration / Resonance And Cyclical Pulsing At 65 MPH
Sep 18, 2011
I have a 2011 stock GTI with DSG. 7,000 miles. I just noticed the car has a resonance / vibration / cyclical pulsing / cyclical drone at EXACTLY 65MPH and again at 75MPH. It feels like the pavement has rumble strips every 100 feet or so. I feel it in the floorpan and slightly thru the pedals. You can also hear it- mid-pitched- like a higher male voice tone. It pulses about every second or slightly less for about a half second. It is slightly faster at 75MPH than 65 MPH.
There is NO shimmy in the steering wheel. It is rock solid stable.
I can't place if it is coming from the front, rear, left or right.
Happens in every gear- regardless of RPM.
Happens the same turning left vs. right.
Happens with and without AC on.
Happens with and without the brakes on and/or parking brake on.
I rotated tires front to back with no difference.
Of course, I spend most of my driving time at these speeds and it is making me CRAZY.
BAD WHEEL BEARING??

Coming home from vacation, I noticed a cyclical vibration in my '96 Volvo 960. The cycle shortens with increased speed, and specifically at 85 mph it would swell to a peak and then smooth out to disappear over ten seconds. It's not real noticeable, steering wheel slightly shakes and you can feel it in your feet. At 80 mph it was about a 15 second cycle.

I've a little over 60k on my '12 Golf TDI and I think it's time to replace the brake rotors and pads (a lot of vibration and pulsing under moderate to heavy braking). I'm looking to replace front and rear rotors at the same time, but have a question about the rear rotor size:
Websites like Tirerack & Partsgeek give several options for the rear rotors - 256mm, 260mm and 272mm.

Getting a weird resonance around 1,500 rpm? Noticed while driving at town-speeds. For a while I thought it was coming from the subwoofer, but I now know, it's the engine.
Car in motion, I engage the clutch, and watch the tachometer needle go down. Just as it passes 1,500 rpm I get this deep, bass noise from the engine. For about half a second, then it fades as the needle goes further down. I can replicate it while parked, at idle, by just pushing the throttle enough to get the rpm at that range. Boomy.
On cold days sometimes the engine runs around that range until it warms up, which makes the car sound really kick ass. In fact, someone heard it in our office's garage the other day and commented that my car sounded "too powerful for stock"...
It's by no means a "bad" noise, in fact I kind of like it. But I'm still wondering if it's a sign of something suspicious.

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. I've been getting a pulsing vibration which feels like the left front. It starts at about 40mph and gets worse the faster I go. The vibration completely goes away with the slightest left turn on the freeway. It vibrates on acceleration and deceleration, in neutral and in gear (5spd manual). I've currently replaced the front struts, strut mounts, pads and rotors, left front wheel bearing, tie rod ends, had the front end aligned and the tires balanced.

Ever since the day I bought the car, it has had a highway speed pulsing vibration. This vibration manifests once you cross about 90kph, and pulses like a sine wave.
Think of it like this - OOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOO - where big O's are vibration and little o's are absence of vibration.
I have had the wheels and tires rebalanced several times on various machines over the years in attempts to rid myself of it. The original owner had theorized that the car was so heavy and had sat on its aftermarket rims in one spot for so long that the wheels had bent, which does not appear to be the case. The dealer has experienced the symptoms but cannot find a cause...though I fear they are less knowledgeable about the car than I am. I note that several people on the forum have had vibration issues due to drive shaft bushing failures...but in skimming the relevant threads, none of those people characterized it as a pulsation OR a constant issue that I saw.
I wouldn't say the pulsing was fast...think 4-5 seconds of vibration and then 4-5 seconds of peace.

My car is approx two years old. I bought it in the beginning of 2010. I rotated my tires about 10,000 miles ago after not rotating them for over 20,000 miles. initially the dealer said it was cupping on the tires but I have driven them since for close to 10k miles.
The same issue persists. Whenever I drive the car and it gets to around 30-40 mph accelerating or coasting I hear a very audible noise that almost sounds like pulsating vibration in the front of the cab. I've brought it to two different dealerships and they have both said it is the tire needing rebalanced but I somehow doubt that is the case.

2014 Subaru Crosstrek XV CPO purchased December 2015.
Last month I slid out on a heavy snow day (no snow tires, I know!) on a left turn and the front passenger wheel struck the curb forcefully enough for the wheel to be angled outwards about 15-20 degrees when steering wheel was straight. Lower control arm was wrecked, had it replaced and alignment done by the local subaru pro. He noted that the caster was now 0.5 degree off, which he noted to be "within specifications". He said it's not a big deal, but if I wanted it fixed, I could have the frame pulled at a frame shop to correct.
I'm just happy to be driving my rig again, but I notice a somewhat low-pitch, pulsating, vibration-like noise whenever I make a left turn at a certain angle. It seems to resonate when I hit a "sweet spot" of speed/turn.

I own an '02 Passat 1.9 TDI 130, approx 100k on the clock, runs like a dream apart from one thing:
A resonance has appeared at about 1500-2000 rpm. Sounds like a knocking of an airbox or something, had the car on ramps but no luck. not the exhaust or anything obvious like the engine cover.
Happens both when moving and standing still. not too loud but enough to anno. What it could be? worn engine mounts? the lights shake quite a bit a tickover....

What this sound is / caused by? This is my Dad's Golf, the sound subsides after the engine warms up a little. It runs fine, power and all. I took off the top timing cover, nope that wasn't it, no rubbing as the sound persisted. Thinking maybe an injector o-ring? The car has 130,000 miles and change on it.

Just got this new 2012. However, I can kind of feel this sort of `pulsing` sensation coming through the seat while driving (can feel it in the driver seat and passenger seat. Almost like the wheels are out of round or something.

After almost 12,ooo miles, I'm starting to experience some kind of buzzing resonance that come through to the dash, console, and can feel it in the gas pedal. It's weird because it will happen when accelerating and decelerating too, but not it's not a constant occurrence. I wondering if the motor mounts are loose? The ICE runs great and the transmission seems to be operating as smoothly as ever. It's just odd that this started just recently.

I've got about 27k on my GTI, and have just noticed some faint, but odd steering / power assist issues.
Relevant mods - koni coils. Have had these for about 15k, recently raised for winter travel, then lowered back to 24.25 ftg. Conti DWS with about 3k on them.
Anyway, other day (while in brief winter height) at parking lot speed, slight turn, I noticed a very faint pulsing through steering wheel. Was not there minutes later.
Lowered car back, drove for a few days, nothing unusual.
Drove from SF > LA yesterday and had an odd feeling at speed on freeway. It was like a bit of resistance turning the wheel off center. Almost like there is a center detent, which i have never noticed before. Once off center, all feels normal. It was super windy out and thought that was causing this, but continued throughout drive.
I don't think that this is the tires, it's more mechanical than that.

The brake pedal on my Golf 4 GTI 132KW pulsates when I put my foot on the pedal going over uneven terrain without pushing the pedal in.

My wife's car is a 2010 Camry XLE, 4 cyl/AT,which we bought new and like very much. It gets stellar fuel economy at highway speeds (35 MPG is not unusual if terrain is flat).
It has 52K miles (all the kids live at least 400 miles away...) and I've been bugged by a "whump whump whump" noise from the right rear for about 5K miles. I thought it was an alignment/tire issue (tires have 25K miles, OEM crap tires wore out w/ 26K miles). So.... I had it aligned, though it wasn't terribly out of spec. I had the tires rotated (to see if the noise would move to a different corner of the car to id or eliminate a tire problem) and I'm still getting a cyclical noise from the rear right.
At low speeds it's very noticeable and gets lost in the road noise at higher speeds.
I had an identical problem with a Maxima several years ago and hub/bearing assembly fixed it. Is there something I'm missing? Or, is the consensus a wheel bearing/hub assembly.

I have noticed a very mild cyclical humming noise at exactly 70 mph. Initially I thought it was the original Bridgestones but it continued after I had a new set of Michelin PSS mounted. The noise can only be heard if the car is on a smooth road and the radio and AC are off. I was wondering if it may be a wheel bearing or issue with the differential. Not sure. Its not a big deal but would like to get to the bottom of it if possible.

I have a new 2010 Prius so am getting used to a different driving experience. One thing I have noticed is that between 55-65 miles per hour I hear a cyclical engine noise every one to two seconds. It is a hum followed by another hum. The noise is not constant but has a one or two second delay between hums. But this cycle is constant between these two speeds. Is this a normal engine sound? If so, why do I notice it only between about 55-65 miles per hour? A technician at a Toyota dealership told me that the 2010 Prius has 26 onboard computers to detect any problems. He said that if there was an issue a red triangle would appear on the display to alert me to any type of problem. I am about to make a 3,000 mile round trip in the Prius and need to know if this cyclical engine noise is cause for concern or just a normal part of the electric/gas engines operation.

We've got a 2011 Santa Fe V6 that's putting out a low pitch cyclical whine at speeds between 5 and 15 mph. It could be making the sound at higher speeds but if it is the engine/wind noise drown it out.
If you're coasting or braking and drop below 5-7 mph, the noise cuts out completely and abruptly. Makes noise regardless of A/C running or off. Sounds like a motor turning on and off. Never makes noise while parked and revved, only while moving at low speeds (stop and go traffic, driving through parking lots, etc) - and is just loud enough to drive us crazy wondering what it is!
Dealer service center checked it out for 3 days - 4 different techs drove it, all heard the noise, but none knew where it was coming from. When you're driving, it seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine.
On a side note, we first started hearing this noise after we got it back from dealer service, where they replaced the TPS and A/C compressor. I'm wondering if it could be from something they had to move to access the compressor?

I swapped my fluid and ever since I did that my clutch and brake pedal are pulsing/vibrating only when I start the car. It almost feels like ABS pulsing but on both pedals and the car is obviously stationary.
I followed the procedure from the manual and did all 4 corners and slave.
Brakes work fine/clutch is fine...
I must have done something to upset the BRAKE system?

I have recently purchased a GLI and am in the process of resurrecting it. One of the main issues I am having is when I get up on it during acceleration I start to feel a strong pulsing. I have found that it only will do this in hot weather and it does it in every gear. I work at a volkswagen dealership and have asked other technicians if they had any clue and nothing. I am going to have a pressure test done to it to see if it could possibly be an intake problem. Everything on the car is stock and I don't want to upgrade anything until I figure out what this it.

I need to determine what this sound is. We just got an 07 Certified Pre-Owned Passat with about 30k miles on it. We've noticed a pulsing, rhythmic sound when going above 50mph. Some observations:
The sound starts literally at 50mph and is present at any speed above that.Sound is speed insensitive. It is a constant rhythm at any speed above 50mphSound is NOT present when in Park and revving the engine ( I think this rules out the turbo, not sure)Downshifting to 5th and 4th gear does not make the sound go away
I'll list some more if I think of any. I'm a noob with the 2.0T but have the tiptronic transmission in my MKV Rabbit and have never had any issue like this one.
Here's a video I recorded: [URL] ....
I suppose I should've started filming at 50mph, as opposed to a constant 80 in the video. The sound is the same though. You should be able to hear it starting in the first 10 seconds. The sound at 40 seconds is just me rolling down the windows.
Last week the breather valve was replaced because it got stuck and was making a whiney whistling sound. Dunno if that would be related.
