Just on my way home during the last few turns down the underground parking, I found the steering wheel column making some squeak noise. Is there anything I should check before bringing it back to the dealership?
View 6 RepliesMy car is 2 months old. About one week ago, I began hearing a subtle clicking sound when turning the steering wheel fatter than 45 degree on either side. At first I thought it came from the turning signal mechanism doing "double clicks" since it sounded merely the same albeit being a bit quieter, but now I think it emanates from just behind the steering wheel.
Since then the problem got worse, not louder but more frequent. Maybe its just me being more aware and looking for it, I don't know. Also this weekend I changed my set of wheels for 18" with low profile tires, coming from the stock 16" vw mags. May not be related since the problem started before I changed the wheels, but since it got worse.
2008 R32 with 17k ... What might be causing this sound which is just a faint clicking clicking sound that happens intermittently when driving.
I have an appointment at VW dealer tomorrow but they do not want to take ownership as I have replaced the head unit and have steering wheel controls for my Alpine IVA 505.
It is not electronic as the controls are solid state and the can bus adapter is behind the head unit. It seems mechanical but what could it be? I definitely notice that at a stop when rocking the brake that create the start of the clicking sound .
So the car was making a strange creaking noise from the column (the point where the wheel attaches to the column); then on a drive up north, i noticed that the horn had stopped working. Shortly after, the airbag light and warning came on, and I lost all power functions to the wheel (phone and radio control). Cruise, etc, all still work.
I'm guessing that the power harness took a dump, but unsure. Car going in on this weekend.
I have a squeak that developed in the steering column whenever I turn the wheel. It is as if something lacks lubrication. It does it in all steering positions. I guess next step is to open it up and see if I can get closer to the source so I can hit it with WD40.
View 6 RepliesHave a seat and/or steering wheel that squeaks? If so did your dealer fix them? I have a driver's seat that squeaks when it adjusts for both entry and exit. It sounds like the leather is rubbing against something. The steering wheel squeaks during turns. I have about 3500 miles on my rig and the seat squeak appeared about 800 miles ago and the steering wheel squeak appeared about 500-600 miles ago.

View 12 RepliesI know this can bring many speculations. I've recently install new 034 strut mounts and new bearings. Stiffer mounts and the new bearings took care of the "compression" noise going over bumps. The bearings were shot.
Just returned from a trip, driving the R now I've notice a slight creaking noise while making left or right full turns at slow speed. I haven't noticed it at high speed yet or maybe its because our cars are pretty loud with an aftermarket exhaust but i don't suspect there's noise going straight.
I tried to see if there's anything out of the ordinary. I noticed that the driver side spring moves slight while the steering wheel is turned either left or right. I suspect that this slight movement is causing the spring to rub on a rubber component of the wheel bearing thus causing the noise.
I'm looking at an R32 with 58k miles. When I turn the wheel side to side when the car is stopped, I hear a creak from the suspension. What is making the noise and how expensive is it to fix?
View 3 RepliesI have been cruising vortex for the last month and finally pulled the trigger on a low mileage Red R32. I am quite excited and love driving the car around.
First, when my sunroof is fully open there is a great deal of reverberation at speeds of 30mph plus. In fact you can feel the whole headliner vibrate. However, if I push the sunroof wind deflector down just a small amount everything is just fine. Is there some adjustment to that wind deflector?
Second, when I test drove the car at first the car started up normally with no unusual noises, but since I actually purchased the car, the car makes several squeaks while the motor is turning over. The dealer tells me this is normal. I took the car in because of the squeak and they found a bad water pump bearing cause they heard some other noises with the engine idling, but that the squeak upon startup is normal operation. That doesn't make sense to me.
I have a rubbing sound that seems to be coming from the steering column when turning. Don't hear it outside of cab just in the inside.
View 4 RepliesMy steering wheel has a squeak when turning either left or right slightly from center.. I usually notice the squeak while stationary or parking. It's louder and more noticeable when it's hot outside.
Listening carefully, it seems to be coming from inside the steering column, not from linkages or joints from under the car. Looking for a exploded diagram of the steering column components, perhaps it's just a U joint (tilt?) that needs some lubing to make it quiet.
I did a search on all three of these and did not find anything.
1) Odd noise coming from steering column while turning.
2) Vanity mirror on driver's side, the lid/flap thingy does not stay open.
3) Trunk only opens when using key. Using FOB of door button does not work. You can hear movement but it does not open.
I just had an alignment done and the steering wheel is turned counter clockwise a little. I know very little about alignment. I know the terminology and what it means and i heard the the rear camber and toe isn't adjustable on mk4s. I did lower my car,only about one inch though.

So when turning my steering wheel i get this croaking noise. At stand still and while driving. Its annoying the heck out of me. You can hear it in the car and outside. What it could be? Power steering fluid level is normal.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2002 F250 diesel, the key will turn to acc. but not on. It feels like it is hitting something in the column. I tried moving the shifting lever back and forth with my foot on the break, as I turned the key but it would not turn. I am thinking the tumblers are OK because it goes into acc. It feels like their is some lever that is not releasing the shift lever, because if I turn the key hard the shift lever jumps. What is wrong, or how the interface between the lock tumbler and the shift lever works?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2007 Lexus ES 350 ultra that I quite enjoy, it has 182,000 miles on it and as time has gone on it has developed this noise in the steering wheel and steering column that I cannot diagnose, it's a noise that I have posted in a video : [URL] .....
I'm fairly mechanically adept and inclined but I truly don't know what this noise is caused by, it sounds like it is in the steering column itself. Normally I would say it has something to do with suspension but since this happens whether I'm moving or stopped, I think it is just a worn or loose piece but I don't know where or what.
Front sway bar bushings causing "clicking" noise while turning the steering wheel? Usually happens when I'm moving into or out of a parking spot and while I'm turning my steering wheel. I got the driver side, I believe, lower control arm replaced and after that i started getting a faint clicking noise when I'm turning the steering wheel.
The dealer, after multiple visits, discovered it's the front sway bar bushing causing the noise. They said it's really not worth the cost, since it's isn't a safety issue and the whole sway bar needs to be replace since you can't buy bushings alone. I want to get rid of the noise regardless of safety or not.
I saw some pics of MPG calculator right on top of the steering wheel column. It was black and believe it displayed 2 sets of numbers.
View 5 RepliesSometimes my steering wheel squeaks. It sounds like plastic rubbing against plastic. The first dealership said the compartment under the steering wheel was rubbing against the column or something inside and that they made an adjustment and the sound stopped. It didn't. The second dealership told me they couldn't figure it out unless they heard the sound. Since it's not every time I drive, sure enough it made no noise at the dealership that day. The head of the shop looked into it and couldn't figure it out. He dry-lubed behind the steering wheel to get to a spring back there. He did the same for where the steering column comes into the car at the bottom of the car. Good for a few days. Squeaking back today.
View 9 RepliesI bought a one-owner, 50,000 mile Buick Lucerne in February. Yesterday I heard a squeaking noise from the steering wheel/column and it is there today. Does this mean I need to lubricate or replace the lower seal on the steering shaft?
