Golf/GTI VI :: Shift Knob Is Very Hard To Move When Car Is Parked
Oct 28, 2013
I am experiencing a very weird issue ... at least in my opinion with my DSG on my 2012 mk6 GTI. I am not sure if this is the DSG "clunk" but when parked uphill/downhill and going from P to R the shift knob is very hard to move. When switching it, it almost sounds like there is some metal grinding. This happens when the car is parked once again uphill/downhill in 99% of the time. There is some very rare instances when the DSG acts the same way when i park it on a leveled street but extremely rare once again. Should I be worried? The DSG has been a great transmission so far, no issues what so ever except VW's flash.

Been having trouble shifting into any gears on these chilly mornings in VA now... The clutch has been sticking on its way out when I release it and the gears don't want to engage unless I really push hard on the shift knob.

The other day the plastic top piece of my shift knob broke off (that had the shift pattern painted on it) and it made me once again want to replace the stock shift knob. I was considering buying one, but other than TWM I can't find any that I really like, so I want to machine one myself. My biggest problem in planning right now is what metal to use, SS is nice but expensive, and how to attach it to the leather and the stick. The only way I can think of attaching it to the stick is with set screws which would be hard to drill.

This has been bothering since the day I got my R. When im in 6th gear and let off the throttle I notice my shifter jolt a bit. Is this normal?

I went to the golf ball, but I am thinking of going back to OEM. Looking for a heads-up about the process?

I recently purchased my R32 and the previous owner installed a short throw shifter. The knob and aluminum ring look like they are installed correctly but the boot won't stay up next to the aluminum ring. I originally thought that it would just either snap into place or it would need to twist to lock it into place. I've looked at and I can't figure it out. How it is supposed to attach to the aluminum ring?

I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra with approx 155,000 miles on it(I don't know if that matters). The car started ok at first. When I put it into reverse, I noticed that it was really hard to move the gear shift(which it's normally really easy). I put it back in park and let it sit for a minute thinking it just had to warm up a bit more.
When I tried it again, it was still hard to shift, but this time when it got into gear I heard a loud clunk. This scared me, so I put it back in park and turned off the car. Now it won't start. All of my lights(headlights, dashboard lights, radio) come on, but the engine won't turn over.
I don't know if any of the following is relevant but I'm putting it out here anyway just in case it is: The battery is only a year old(and since all my lights came on, I don't think it's dead)I had an oil change on Saturday. The belts were replaced a few months ago. My check engine light is on because of an O2 sensor.

I have a 2014 GTI 6MT, and am trying to figure out if, when I got the car 3 months ago new, the shift knob was loose, or tight. Right now, I just noticed it has the lateral rotation (left/right) maybe 1/8" or so. Just can't remember when I got it, if I noticed that.
Shift knob had lateral rotation when you got your car, or shortly thereafter?

Is it normal to occasionally feel a little vibration or feedback in the shift knob when putting the car into reverse? It happens whether the car is in the "Warm-Up" phase or not, and seems pretty random. Happens about 25% of the time. It doesn't last but a tenth of a second, and it just barely makes an audible noise when the window is rolled down. This is my first manual transmission car so I just don't have the experience to 'diagnose' this. And no, I'm not trying to put the car in reverse while the car is still rolling forward.

So after owning my R for just over a week I've noticed that when I accelerate hard or let off the throttle the shifter seems to move quite a bit. Is this normal with the stock mounts or is it something I should have looked at? I know the stock mounts are rubber to aid in isolating the vibration of the engine but it seems like the shifter moves a little more than I would expect.

I've got a 1.8T 2004 automatic and the problem I'm having is the shifter is harder to move since the weather's been colder. It shifts very well and is responsive, it's just that I have to pull it harder to select P, R, N and D. D is especially hard (no pun intended you sick minds! ) to select, the shifter kind of stays in neutral but shifts after a bit. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Side question: is the rear defrost supposed to turn off after a certain period of time? My 2002 golf does it but the jetta doesn't.

How hard is it to replace the sunroof slider? Mine is making a clicking noise and hard to move on the drivers side. Does the headliner and sunroof need to be removed?

First the wife crushes the underbody on a huge rock cutting a corner. Now she spilled a whole pop down the shift lever, and its glued shut - it will hardly move. I know how to get the console off, but How do I take just the 'shift knob' off? I need to get the flexible piece underneath it off so we can wash all the parts.. I have the upper console part off.

I've got a 2001.5 v6 passat w/ auto and my shift knob has this cool burl veneer on it. I think it's real wood but it's pretty thin and it's got cracks on the front and the back. I can't see any simple way to remove the stick so that I can try to glue it. How to do that. But it's a standard tiprtonic shifter ... probably the standard on that model.

I am trying to remove the shift knob and the steps are entirely different than the DSG knobs from the GTI; You take just the boot off (not the assembly) then underneath is a hose clamp which needs to be removed. (this is not on the GTI version); I cannot figure out how to get this clamp off; I guess you need hose clamp pliers? And then do you need a new hose clamp? Won't it ruin the clamp?

How to remove the OEM "golf ball" shifter on a 20th AE? I tried everything but it still won't budge. Is there a trick to removing it? Is it a tight press fit or does it screw on?
I have the latest edition of the Bentley repair manual and it does not cover this shifter knob.

I was looking through the DIY and I couldn't find one that just removes the knob it self. I know its all the same steps to remove everything but everyone just swapped the boot and everything. I want to keep my boot and just change the knob to a solid glass ball.

I originally wanted to change my shift knob...... but now, I am thinking of changing the whole thing to buttons.... *it's "fly by wire" anyways right?
as an example, how about fab'ing in the buttons from a tesla roadster? here's a pic ...., (it's a tight fit inside the car!)
