25k miles, recently started getting this noise from the front end when going ~15mpg or less. Decreases and increases with wheel speed and loudest when coasting to a stop sign. Sounds like a scraping disc brake, however brake pressure doesn't affect the noise. Started happening after last service when they rotated the tires. Haven't had the chance to inspect anything yet.
View 7 RepliesNot sure if it's related to the crappy weather we've been having here in the NE, but I've got this terrible rotational scraping / grinding noise coming from the front end (sounds like the right corner). At first I thought it must be the belly pan or a fender liner came loose after driving through snow / ice but everything looks fine. Only occurs when moving, under load, it's affected by steering a bit. I'm watching two little kids I haven't been able to get the wheels off for a closer look.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2004 Saturn Vue, V6, FWD with ~170K miles. It has a rotational noise coming from the front end that I can't find/fix. My regular mechanic has replaced both front wheel bearings, the rotors and brake pads. Tires have ~35K on them and no noticeable uneven wear. They were rotated and the noise didn't go away. Mechanic thought it might be transmission, but transmission shop disagreed, but couldn't suggest an alternative. The noise is speed dependent. Initially you had to be at highway speeds to detect it, but now you can hear it at 25 - 40 mph as well. Best description is a "whoop-whoop" sound. You cannot hear the noise if the car is parked and you rev the engine.
View 1 RepliesI'm hoping to see if there is another solution here. I just hit 100k on my .:R and it has developed a vibration that increase with speed front right. I have done a few things already including the following: swapped out winter wheels for summer, had summer wheels re-balanced (both are hub centric). Both lower control arm bushings on L&R side (both were original), new ball joint front right (it was wiped), new hub assembly/wheel bearing front right, re-torqued all the sub frame bolts to spec, inspected tie rod end - appears OK, inspected strut mount - appears OK, strut and coil appear OK, neither CV boot is not torn. replacing the wheel bearing made it quieter but the vibration is still there. It feels like the worst possible unbalanced wheel and the vibration is exaggerated under a load. I'd try a CV next but I'm having a hard time sourcing a front right CV.

Several months ago, when turning left, regardless of speed, my wife starting hearing a noise. It is not a knocking or harsh grinding noise, but a low grumble (I don't have a great word for it). It's definitely rotational, it doesn't get any louder as speed increases, but it obviously happens more often. It seems to come from the right side of the car, I originally thought it was from the wheel, but just now I had it jacked up and had a neighbor who works on cars look at it with me and now I'm not so sure.
When I described the problem to him, he first thought it was a CV joint, or possibly ball bearing. After a few minutes looking under the hood, he quickly ruled those out. Boots were in great condition, and he remarked that everything seems to be very solid around the wheel.
I thought that noise was a result of weight shift to the right side of the vehicle when making right-hand turns, but we had the car up on two jacks stands placed on the jack braces, turned the car on and gave it some gas with the wheels turned left, and you can definitely hear the noise with zero weight on the wheels or axles. When you straighten the wheel, the noise subsides.

I've experience this one twice, a few weeks apart: cold start the car, and in the first 100 yards or so I'll hear a tapping noise that's clearly rotational, varies with speed but eventually ceases. Sounds like it's coming from front passenger wheel well area, and sounds like a stick or some sort of debris is stuck in the wheel. Both times I've inspected the area and found nothing whatsoever.
I live in an apartment complex area, park in a lot always in reverse so I'm always going from park to drive. The area I live in is wooded ("Pine Barrens" region of Long Island) but the roads are paved so it's not like I'm driving thru wilderness.
My R is making a noise I don't think I've heard before.
I've been listening to my Borla exhaust to figure out if it's rubbing on the propshaft. I'm pretty sure that's been sorted, but it still 'sings' a little bit. I'm guessing it's some sort of resonance...
Anyway, while I'm listening carefully, I hear a noise that sounds like 'rotational dragging', almost like a parking brake is dragging a little bit, but no screech or anything. It's particularly bad (though still subtle) when everything is cold. It's been colder here lately, 30-40F.
At moderate speed, 30-40mph, I don't hear the noise under throttle, but when I lift throttle, I hear the dragging sound. It might be that it's always there, and just being masked by engine / exhaust noise. Or it might make more noise when I lift.
It seems to be coming from "under and back" of the driver's seat.
I am running an upgraded Haldex with the switch set full time on 'race'. I had the 40K service at 40K, and I'm now at 76K.
I have a 2013 Subaru Impreza with 23,500 miles on it; all service done at dealer, by the book. Brought car in at 22,212 miles for rotational noise in front right tire area that becomes noticeable at 35 mph and syncs with speed of wheel (especially annoying at highway speeds). tires were at 6/32, inside edge 'slightly chopped'. Alignment was done; right rear toe out of adjustment. the noise remained.
returned to dealer; manager took a ride with, said he heard the noise, said tires (the originals) might be made of softer rubber and wear faster, or it might be a wheel bearing starting to go. he did a visual check of tires and measured tread. they replaced the right bearing. Noise still there.
Returned to dealer, they road tested , heard the noise, ran car on lift and 'traced to center of transmission', ordered a Subaru remanufactured transmission and installed it. the noise remains . I was especially shocked at replacement of transmission! (car is still under warranty so it's not costing me anything but grief and aggravation at no resolution).
I have always felt the problem is at the wheel, but i'm no mechanic. they are the experts. Could it be a problem with defective brake parts that somehow are rubbing or if the lugs are tightened too far could that bend something. I am not a street racer and I drive like I plan to keep the car for a long time!
When I called (after the transmission replacement) about the driver one-touch window not working, the desk guy told me how to reset it (very easy) and said that they'd forgotten to do that. I told him that the noise is still there and he said "well, it could be coming from the roof rack" (I have non-Subaru cross bars on the roof rack and a fairing. I thought that comment was lame as the crossbars have been on since 2013 and I've heard no rotational noise from them. However, to 'rule out', I will remove them and take a drive.
I told desk guy I was going to drive the car for a week or so because conditions have not been optimal with bumpy roads and weather to be completely certain. several days have passed since that conversation; the noise is still there and once I've driven without the crossbars on, the car is going back.I am hoping for feedback on what to tell them to check next.
I have a scraping noise which sounds like it is coming from the front end but only around 10 to 20 mph. It can only be heard when driving down a quiet street, next to a building (mcdonald's drive through) or in my parking garage at work. Always makes the noise, it sounds like it something was scraping on one of the rotors.
Purchased car in August with 26,000 miles from a non VW dealer --- first mistake. Two days after signing papers showed signs of valve body issue. Took it to VW dealer near work and after two days they finally got OK to replace valve body and all is good. About 5K to 6K miles later started hearing the noise. At 36,000 the tranny started shifting hard and having problems up shifting occasionally, would rev up really high and then finally go into gear. Took 3 service visits for the same dealer to be able reproduce it and then they finally figure out they left out 2 liters (their calculation) of fluid when doing the valve body, so it got driven 10,000 miles while 2 liters low. They basically acted like they were doing me a favor by adding the fluid they left out in the first place and said only time will tell if there is any damage.
Took it back to the same dealer again for the scraping noise. Supposedly 3 people drove the car and never heard the noise. CEL came on yesterday and I decided to try a new dealer and have them look into the noise while it was there. Did a ride along with the service writer and tech. Writer is pretty sure he heard the noise and tech wants it back after the holidays to road test more and try driving in some quiet areas.
It has been determined that the car does not make the noise if there is no weight on the front end. I have jacked it up and spun the wheels and first dealer claims they had it on the lift in drive and could not hear. New dealer is thinking bearing noise that is only heard when bearing has weight on the front wheels or something to do with the CV axles or something in the tranny. If it is the tranny well we know who's fault that is.
2007 Prius w/ ~90,000 miles. So my wife was driving home and reports she hears a thunk of some sort, and then a scraping noise coming from the front of the car. She drives it home and I take a quick peek. Nothing dragging underneath, sounds like it's coming from the tires, so probably brake-related. But here are some additional clues: when I reversed down the (very short) driveway (at very low speed, <5mph), I heard the scraping. I then put it in D to go forward, again at low speed, and heard the scraping and then something went clank, like something was shifting in the other direction. Whenever I change direction, the clank sound and more scraping. Also: when the car is off and I'm gently rocking it back and forth, I hear squeaking, like springs of a bed.
View 3 RepliesNoticed this morning that my Honda Civic is making a metallic scraping noise while moving -- happens when not braking. Appears to be coming from the left front. I noticed it at very low speeds. It isn't exactly the "wah-wah-wah" grinding sound that changes a little in pitch as the wheel rotates that I'd expect from a bearing. I've been through a bunch of Youtube videos from people diagnosing various wheel- and brake-related problems and haven't found one that matches mine yet.

View 2 RepliesHere is a link to the audio [URL] .... It makes this noise, whether I'm at idle or running, granted it seems to be happen more when moving, its quite intermittent as it stops sometimes. I replaced the serpentine belt a month ago, so it can't be that. Its coming from the front of the engine. Sounds almost like the fan bearings or something below that is scraping. I've turned off the heater and it still does it, but the fan is spinning all the time, so I'm not sure what is going on.In the background you can hear cars going by on the overpass above, but I'm focused on the grinding noise. Car is not moving, its in park and makes the noise when moving also, with gas or at idle.
View 3 Replies2000 Mercury Villager. Noise in the left front wheel area only. Listened to both sides and zero noise on the right side. It's a metallic scraping noise. It's increase frequency as you speed up much like a train does as it speeds up. And stops when you push on the brakes. Doesn't seem to be related to steering.

Happens most at high speeds when going over bumps. it's a Toyota matrix 2003 with 163k miles. We're on a car trip and are wondering if we need to address this now or if it can wait a few days.
View 2 RepliesMy R32 has got about 9,400mi on it, and for the past 3k miles or so, i've been dealing with this metallic scraping/rattling noise coming from underneath the car. When I took it to the dealer, they said it was the exhaust flex pipe, so they replaced it under warranty. Next day after picking the car up, same noise. So i took it in again this morning and they are saying its the flex pipe again, and they don't know if it is fixable.
They are talking to VW tech assistance, and trying to figure something out. I really love this car, but if VW says there is no fix for it, I'm weary about possible future issues without fixes too. Apparently it has something to do with the length of the flex pipes and the material its made out of. He was saying one possible solution is stiffer engine mounts. We'll see where this goes.
I just had a new downpipe installed and now I am getting a horrible scrapping noise when coming off a dead stop. I got under the car and looks like the downpipe is touching subframe heat shield. My question is should i take it back and have them make some clearance or is there a quicker solution. New downpipe and subframe heat shield.
View 2 RepliesSo... Took my car into a tire shop (tire pros) to get a screw pulled out of my front left tire... And after they finish the job - the guy comes up to me and says "your front brakes don't have much life left." I said, "I know I'm planning to change them in the next couple of weeks"...
He then said, "well I think your sensor just went off, when I pulled the car around.." I said "okay", got in the car and drove off - no brake light what so ever.
Anyways, A few hours later when pulling my car around the corner on the way home - I noticed that I am all of the sudden getting a random scraping sound from the front-right rotor anytime I turn the well all the way to the left at slow speeds...
I'm not too worried about it - just want to make sure these guys aren't trying to sabotage my car! The only thing that kills me, is that I didn't have the sound before and no all of the sudden I do? I'm assuming they somehow slightly moved the pad, causing it to somehow squeal - I'm just not exactly sure what they did...
When I drive the 1991 Stealth for an extended period - more than 50 miles, at least, the car intermittently presents a loud rotational banging sound from the passenger side front end. If I depress the clutch peddle and decelerate, it slows down/stops. It is not a continous noise, and it only comes up every so many months. I have taken it to mechanics numerous times, and there have been guesses/fixes to address the problem, but it is still ocurring. Other than this, the car is in great shape and runs great!
Here is what has been done to the car that is relevant:
New Rack and Pinion Steering,
New Tie Rod(s),
New Brake Pads, Transmission Rebuilt, valve re-work.
It does not happen continuously, so it does not seem like it would be a CV joint., When it first starts to come on it is noticed most when turning. But then it gets louder and just does it even when going straight. When the problem first started happening, the transmission had been done within a month or two prior, and I noticed one of the transmission bolts was missing (front center bottom). I was told at that time this was not the issue and since the place where the bolt goes in was stripped, nothing cold be done to replace the bolt, except to take out and replace the entire mount.
I have what feels like a rotational vibration (front to back) during mid to hard acceleration in 5th gear (60-65+mph) and its driving me crazy trying to figure this out. I can slightly feel it under hard acceleration in 3rd gear as well.
I have tried two different sets of wheels (both after market and stock) with no luck. I am starting to think it is in the motor and not the suspension... Or could it be the trans? What can I check/inspect to get how to tackle this?
Info on the car: 2003 Wagon 1.8T 5sp. 40k miles
Its a rotational squeak, that sounds like its under the cab or possibly left front tire. The truck only has around 25k miles on it. I recently had a 2" leveling kit installed, 35" tires, and rear airbags installed (within 5k miles). I checked the universals and they seem to ok and there is no noticeable clunk. I am hoping its something small.
