Golf/GTI VI :: Rattle Noise While Moving And Turning The Wheel All The Way
May 22, 2012
2012 GTI, MT, 7k miles ... Now that I've determined the other noise I had is a wastegate rattle, I'm getting this lovely noise while moving and turning the wheel all the way, seems to only be when it's wet/rainy.

Noticed with the colder weather that when I first start moving and turning tightly, (lets say out of a parking space both backing out or pulling forward) there is a sound coming from the rear end that sounds like a heavy treaded mud tire rubbing on an inner fender. Tried to read up on it and most posts say change your Haldex fluid, but unfortunately I haven't found a thread that says whats happening. I haven't changed the fluid yet and will. (it is at 16,430 since the last change so its getting close as is). When I engage the parking break one click the noise instantly goes away. Am I hearing clutch chatter, pump going out, just dirty or low fluid?

So when turning my steering wheel i get this croaking noise. At stand still and while driving. Its annoying the heck out of me. You can hear it in the car and outside. What it could be? Power steering fluid level is normal.

Front sway bar bushings causing "clicking" noise while turning the steering wheel? Usually happens when I'm moving into or out of a parking spot and while I'm turning my steering wheel. I got the driver side, I believe, lower control arm replaced and after that i started getting a faint clicking noise when I'm turning the steering wheel.
The dealer, after multiple visits, discovered it's the front sway bar bushing causing the noise. They said it's really not worth the cost, since it's isn't a safety issue and the whole sway bar needs to be replace since you can't buy bushings alone. I want to get rid of the noise regardless of safety or not.

Noisy steering wheel. It doesn't matter where I position the wheel, I'm hearing clatter when going over bumps or when putting pressure on the wheel. It has no effect on steering. I think it's coming from somewhere inside the adjustment mechanism. I figure the dealer will need to take a look.

Hit a long 4x4 post on the freeway and bent a front rim. Was able to miss most of it but hit it with the right tires. It didn't hit anything under the car that I can tell. Got a new rim and moved the TPMS and tire to the new rim. Back wheel looks ok. Still have a low pressure light. TPMS was lit when I had the bad wheel out of the car but is now out.
Have previously had trouble with another wheel giving a warning when it was only a pound or two low. Checked all the wheels and added a few pounds to each and still have the light.
How do I troubleshoot the TPMS? How long should the batteries last - is this just normal life of the sensors? It's a 2009 model.
Also have some noise and rattles I didn't have before. Not when going straight but when turning and accelerating at the same time. Hoping its just some shields and nothing too serious... I looked and didn't see anything obviously loose so I need to dig into it a bit more.

97 F150 4x4 around 200k miles on it, Drove the truck to town today and it started making a screeching noise when I turn the wheel and moving at slow speed's It is not the typical Ball joint squeak, and they were replaced about 6 months ago. I also get a clicking squeak going down the road, everyone in a while from take of ill get a slide grinding or crunching noise. Also noticed that when taking a curve to the right i feel and hear a slight Bump but I don't when turning to the left/
Also it doesn't have the typical grinding noise of a bad unit bearing, there is a slight roar but Pretty sure that it is just the aggressive tire's... I am about to go out and Jack it up and have a look at it to see what it was. Also if I loosen the Cv nut on at the Hub that would show me if there was any play in the bearing correct? since the cv should keep the bearing's fairly tight even if they are worn?

On the r32 there is a rattling noise coming from the right rear wheel. It's a very tinny sound and is definitely a metallic noise. The weird thing is as soon as you his the brake, it goes away. Even if you just lightly press on it, it stops. I took the wheel off, looked around for anything loose and found nothing. It's super loud though and completely embarrassing. My e36 bmw does the same exact thing as well and has done so for years, but its much quieter and not as often. On the mkiv its almost constant and at every speed.

During low speeds when I hit rough payment my steering wheel feels a little more bouncy than usual. Also I am hearing what sounds like a rattle in the front of the car. The steering feels tight otherwise.

Have the HPA SHS installed now. Everything is aligned. Getting the worst clunk noise when moving the car backwards. The noise comes from the front right. Clunking with slight vibration felt in steering wheel. Also clunks when straightening out the wheel to move forward. The noise stops once I start going. What could cause this?

Noticed a noise coming from the front drivers side of my r a while back. I only hear it when going over bumps and turning right. It sounds like rocks are hitting each other. Best way i can explain it. I can barely feel it in the steering wheel too. I also changed my summer tires out for winters on Monday and noticed that the inner tread of my tire on the front driver side is wearing faster. Where to begin to look? Tie rods and ends? I gave the wheel a pull in all directions when the car was jacked up and there's no play. Don't think its a bearing. R is bone stock with 47k on it.

I am getting this weird clicking/ticking noise coming from the rear of the car. I might have to let someone drive the car and follow and listen for myself (but i dont like other people driving my car), but its definitely coming from the rotation of moving.
It is audible moving forwards and reverse. It speeds up as the speed increases. It comes from the passenger side and can hear it mostly from the sound bouncing off things from the outside. I cant feel it, its just an annoying sound. I still hear it while applying the brakes. Sort of sounds like flicking sound. Pads have plenty of life and changed my rotors about 20k ago.
I've read somewhere about brake pad spring busting but its still audible when the brakes are on so I don't think that's it.

When stationary and turning the wheel to the right, I get a popping noise coming from the front right suspension. It is not the subframe bolts or the endlinks (those were disconnected for testing). Car has been on Ohlins coilovers for 2 years and this just started. I've replaced the top mounts and the bearings. Tried Audi TT too mounts and new bearings again. No luck. If I loosen the strut mount bolt, problem goes away.
But obviously can't drive like that. Lifted the car on the right side so that the suspension was about half way compressed, turned the wheel and no noise. So it seems what is happening is that the metal insert in the top mount wants to move slightly, but it will only move so far. When the suspension is compressed, it sticks and then "pops" back into position. None of this makes sense as that part of the mount is not supposed to move and I have new bearings too.
I thought of placing some lube in the bottom of the strut mount where the metal insert comes in contact with the rubber of the mount.

Can you turn the wheel all the way while driving without it rubbing? I noticed today my tire rubs what I believe to be the inner fender. This can't be normal?

A few days ago my car started making a groaning noise when I turn the steering wheel. Sounds like it's coming from the middle of the car. Makes the noise whether the car is moving or not.

My girlfriend owns a '92 Plymouth Acclaim. We noticed a few weeks ago that there was a clunk/rattle noise coming from one wheel, and since it mostly happened while cornering, thought it might be CV joints or maybe suspension. She brought it to her mechanic who inspected the brakes and found that the rear shocks were bad, but sent her away without fixing anything. The other day, on a long drive, the rattle suddenly intensified, morphed into a loud grinding noise, and then the wheel fell off.
I think I'm going to have to confront the mechanic. The bearings apparently hadn't been repacked in some time, and were surely the cause of the rattle noise. I'm less concerned with the fact that he might have overlooked an obvious problem as much as neglected to properly service the vehicle.
Are brake techs supposed to check, then tighten wheel bearings or repack them if needed?
