It sounds like a plastic on plastic rattle coming from the dash area. The sound comes loudly through the vents, so I am thinking it is something under the hood. Bumps make it much worse. No relationship to whether I am on the throttle or not.

It just sounded like marble got sucked in the intake or 2 thick plates banging. I am pretty sure its not the heat shield for the filter also because i tried holding that and looked at that part. Went under the car too but i cant pinpoint where its coming from but maybe inside the engine?

I also got a pronounce rattling at 2000 rpm when I let go of the gas that's located maybe at the bottom passenger side. I am thinking fuel lines?
Is there a difference in the engine sound between a stage 1 and stage 2? I like my stage 1 with APR intake as it is so I'm concerned I'll be changing it if I go to stage 2 with the intake.
View 15 RepliesThis previous weekend, my buddies and I finally got my FK coilovers installed on my GTI. I have heard that people say there is a little bit of rattling upon them getting properly seated. Well it has been 4 days of driving and now sounds like the rattling has gotten worse! I took it into a local suspension shop and they couldn't put a thumb on it. We in-turn found out that my rear hub bearing was going out and has since been replace. Having issues with coilovers? I have contacted the company that I purchased them through already and am awaiting feedback from them.

I just went APR Stage 1+ (APR hpfp plus VWR intake) and am loving the noticeable power gain from Stage 1. But under hard acceleration I'm getting a strange noise (sounds like wheelspin or tire screech and sounds like it's coming from the front tires) when I disengage the clutch to shift at higher (5K+) rpms. It is not metallic sounding (it sounds like burning rubber) and lasts for a split second then goes away.
For those of you who've had tuned GTIs, it essentially sounds like what my Stage 1 GTI sounded like when too much torque was going to the front wheels and I spun my wheels before I got traction.
It doesn't happen as I re-engage the clutch and it doesn't happen any other time (quick but not WOT acceleration or normal driving). It also didn't happen under hard acceleration before I went from Stage 1 to Stage 1+. Furthermore, I'm not having any issues with difficulty shifting or engaging gears at any time. My R is 1 month old and has ~1K miles.
I've searched the clutch/transmission troubles thread, and other threads, but haven't come across other sounds/symptoms that seem similar.
At first I was thinking it was just a split second of wheelspin from too much torque as the AWD kicked in, but that doesn't seem to make sense (or does it?) since it only happens when I'm disengaging the clutch. Any thoughts before I start thinking the worst?
I have a 2012 mk6 and did stage 1 APR about 3 months ago and loved every single moment of it. It made a huge difference on the car but like all good things they don't last forever so it was time to move to bigger, better things so I went stage 2 this weekend ( apr stage 2 carbonio, APR downpipe and reflash ). I installed it at a VW dealer in Mount Prospect, IL, same place where I got my stage 1 installed.
When I drove off with the car everything seemed to be just fine and the gains were noticeable. Later on as I was cruising I started hearing a rattling noise coming from the front of the car, right under the DSG shifter. I was thinking it could be one of the clamps that was used to install the DP, I didn't get a chance to look under the car yet. What it might be? This morning when I turned on the car, I did not hear the rattle...
2012 GTi DSG... In low rpm when I have the gas pushed down and to get it up in speed to it sounds like in metal rattling around or like a plastic bag and you are smashing it around.

First off, everything feels great. very solid mounts especially when compared to the spongy stock ones. definitely gets the job done.
Here's my question, is it normal to hear a lot of noise chatter coming from the clutch when not engaged? when my foot is on the clutch it goes away, and when i take my foot off a lot of noise starts coming from it. as far as i know, some clutch noise is relatively normal but I'm not sure if a lot is. also, when i start the car, the starter has a deeper, louder, more pronounced tone to it. not sure if that is normal or not either.
Having problems with sunroof cover making noise when going over bumps? It just sounds like the plastic is making all the noise.
View 8 RepliesI have been doing some research on why my 6sp MT makes a weird almost "Plastic Grinding" noise when shifting from 1st to second on cold days when it sits overnight. It has been getting under 40 degree that last couple days and it seems to go away after just a few minutes of driving. It only happens from 1st to 2nd. I have been told its normal and just because the trans fluid is thicker when cold.

My R's only got 5,400 miles on it and I just lowered it Saturday on H&R Springs and when I turn my steering wheel like 3/4 either way it makes like a clunk noise at lower speeds only....any other part besides strut top mounts and bearings? It sounds like its coming from the right front.
View 9 RepliesBeen hearing a plastic sounding tapping noise when I ride over very bumpy roads. Turns out the floor panel in the trunk has some play and it's not padded. Well I wedged a towel Between the floor and the trunk lid and the tapping is gone. I was able to duplicate the sound by lifting and dropping the sliding floor in the trunk. Anyway I'm thrilled car is supple and quite over bumpy roads now. I went over every bumpy road I could find; nice and planted and quite now...

The service Advisor called back to tell me the ECU was fried and because it was Modded (APR Stage 1) it is not covered by warranty.

Well a picture says a thousand words so that plastic cover?/roof tonneau?/whatever is rattling when the top is up. Its a bit annoying when everything else in the cabin is tomb quiet so im going to try to remedy it tomorrow with some adhesive silicone. The same stuff that prevented leaks into my trunk will now be used to stop rattles (I hope).
View 5 RepliesSo when I bought one of my cars used I noticed a plastic rattle coming from the dash. Removed the dash sprayed some silicone and sealed with rubber and that fixed it. maybe 2 weeks ago another very annoying rattle developed which you can hear when the ICE start and you accelerate...and now you can hear it even when you are cruising on the hwy. I thought it is from the dash again but you will see that even without the dash it is still there.

7 weeks ago I installed WRD Street Advantage coils. The install went great, no problems. Drove a week or so and decided to replace the strut mounts with 034's density strut mounts and new bearing to get rid of the creaking sound at low speed. Ordered them and put them on this weekend. After driving it I realized the creaking of the old weaker strut mount was gone. However, I inherited a rough clunking or knocking sound (as if something is loose and moving around), which seems to be coming from my passenger side. This happens at all speeds and not specific to turning the wheel. I unistalled/reinstalled everything in the front 4 times and went through everything with a fine tooth comb, but can't find anything loose. All bolts are torqued to spec.
I even removed the sway bar end links and drove it, still there. So it's not the end links. I also tried using the OEM endlinks which are longer than the ones from WRD to increase the space between the axle and the sway bar, possibly thinking it was hitting and causing the noise. No luck, still there. The only thing I noticed is that with the car on jack stands the strut mount is tight to the body but I still have slight play in the spring and it's perch. Is that normal? I'm assuming under load it's tight again. So the only variable in my situation is the new Density Mounts and bearing, can these cause heightened noises due to the increased heardness of the mounts?
Instead a set of VWR springs yesterday on my GTI. Initially driving it, everything seemed fine. After about 20 miles and taking an off ramp aggressively, I noticed a squeaking noise from my drivers side when I go over bumps. I cannot pin point what may be causing it.

View 2 RepliesI have 2015 GTI PP which had the APR Stage 2 with downpipe done about two weeks ago. I pretty much babied it the first week and couldn't believe how quick the car felt with a tiny little bit of throttle.
However, when I floor the car, it accelerates slower than if the throttle is slowly pressed to the floor. If I floor it and then back slowly back off the throttle as I near the upper RPMs the car starts to accelerate like it should have in the first place. The car is a total rocket if I slowly press the pedal towards the floor but if I press the pedal to much towards the floor the car slows down its acceleration that is until I start to slowly lift the pedal.
I'm at 5000ft elevation and its been pretty hot in the 80-103 F degrees. The gas out here is only 91 octane and the car has the 91 octane tune. I have tried gas from multiple stations and even tried an octane booster with no noticible improvement. I went to go log the car with my VCDS and found out that this new car uses a UDS ECU and none of the APR codes on their site match up.
Looking for a compiled list of UDS codes that actually log something useful? Or have a list that corresponds to the APR list of codes?
Gotta love Turbo weather, but my stock clutch is at its limits. It has never missed a beat rowing through the gears, but I can't roll into 5th and 6th anymore. Car feels considerably faster in the colder weather. May be time for a clutch soon, at 70K anyway.
