Golf/GTI VI :: Oil Leak On The Underside Of Engine
Mar 9, 2010
Had the "G" in the driveway and noticed a very small wet spot (definitely oil) on the garage floor today. Looked underneath and can see a wet spot (not very wet) on the underside the engine, but without a lift... can't get a good look to see the exact source of the leak.
With that said --- it's headed to the shop Monday morning. Oil level is good... so it's not a huge leak by any means.

Noticed oil on the underside of the engine last oil change, took to Ford dealer for repair under extended warranty. Got a call back today, stating the the oil leak is coming from a injector on the drivers side, and that the injector seals is not covered under warranty. I'm having an issue understanding that oil leaking out from around the injector is not covered under a power train warranty.

I drive my golf maybe 180-250Km everyday, and there are countless areas where something could occur but for about a month now I am hearing a strange sound coming from where I suppose the suspension would be, (I don't know for sure because I am in the car when I hear it) but its happening when i go over speed bumps, even going less than 10kph.... and when ever i hit a crappy road with a lot of potholes and bumps. it sounds like a scraping noise of like maybe the shock absorber or something along those lines. I would go to VW but the dealer in my area likes to void warranties, and is very difficult in giving away things for free/cheap. it getting consistently louder and is starting to worry me. should i be worried or is it a simple fix?

After a bit of a crunch to the underside, i've noticed some circular metal covering broke back and some wires are torn and exposed just behind the front passenger wheel on the bottom.

The underside coating is peeled off where the vehicle lifter makes contact. Is this normal or does this indicate the dealer lifted the vehicle incorrectly?
I went only to dear so far. It was done by the dealer. The bright metal is exposed. I did not notice rust yet.
I happened to notice the peel off while I was installing mud flaps myself.

My '10 Golf TDI started leaking gasoline this morning, found smallish puddle in the garage. Looked underneath and there was definitely fuel on the underside of the tank. Moved the car into the driveway so the leaking fuel can evaporate.
Not sure what happened. I did hit something on the highway yesterday, a piece of tire from a semi went underneath the car. Of course it's been really hot 100+ deg lately. Maybe a fitting has come loose?
I'm not going to risk driving it, but can't do anything about it until monday. I'll call the shop and see what they recommend, tow or drive.

Whilst driving on the motorway at the weekend I noticed a very load high pitched noise which seemed to be coming from the rear/centre underside of the car. It lasted for about 30 seconds and then went. It has happened before about two months ago and after the first instance I had the haldex and rear diff oil changed. On both occasions it has been very wet on roads with torrentian rain.

I was driving home and suddenly the underside of my car *popped* and it sounded like my muffler came loose. Very loud exhaust/turbo whistle.
Luckily I was very close to home and was able to pull in when it completely fell off and started dragging on the street. What part of my exhaust is this and what should I do to repair it?
I just finished fixing a ton of stuff on her and now she does this ?

My 99 Jetta is rattling. The noise comes from the front center of the underside of the car. It started out only when I was accelerating and would disappear when in neutral or after reaching 40mph. Now its when its idling and driving at any speeds under 40mph (I think it just gets drowned out above that speed). I looked under the car and saw that there might be a piece causing the noise but I can't figure out what it is. It seems to be in-line with the exhaust system and its a metal, cylinder looking piece that has uniform holes in it. I'm just trying to figure out what is causing the noise, if I can fix it easily or if this is going to be a pretty expensive fix. (It has 165k miles on it, is a 2.1 gas engine with the new body type).

So, I have discovered my first rattle in my GTI (8500 miles). Seems to be from the underside, sounds like a heat shield rattling, certainly sounds metallic. Did some spirited driving yesterday and hear the rattle today. Any target areas to check when I take a look under it?

Ok so I bought this 2012 f250 and I had a couple questions.
1. I checked the Frame for rust n it was fine. I didn't look at the other parts until I got it home. It does have some light to moderate rusting on other areas under the engine compartment. Ex axle, drive shaft, some of the steering components. Exhaust Manifold is pretty rusty though. What can I do about that?
2. I noticed a little bit of oil, not dripping, on the underside of the front of the engine. I do have an extended warranty so i hope it will cover that. It's pretty extensive of a warranty. I took some pics of the area where there is oil. What could it be?
Most of the oil is focused around there ...

I have a 2011 4-door manual GTI. 1200 miles. I have oil leaking from the top side of the engine. It is pooling just below the valve cover and spilling over onto the exhaust manifold and burning off. Just took it to the dealer who said it was a bad o-ring on the little access plug in the valve cover.
Seemed fine for about 20 miles. Now I have pools of oil hanging out in the hottest area of my engine compartment. The only time it seems to leak is if I let the turbo spool up. If I take a very gentle drive, it does not seem to leak. This is my first VW, I was a loyal Ford owner. Not even my '87 T-Bird Turbo leaked oil with 187,000 miles (just power steering fluid and coolant ).

Car: 2011 VW GTI MkVI
Mileage: 79k
Configuration: Stock
Warranty/Coverage: None
So I started my car last Monday and the check engine light was on. Didn't think much of it because the car ran fine and there were no immediate symptoms. I was busy with work this week, but noticed some changes in the car's performance over time so I waited till Thursday to have it scanned at AutoZone, which threw the following codes:
P 300 Definition: Random Engine Misfire
Explanation: Lean air/fuel ratio
Probable Cause: Ignition system misfire condition, Fuel injector fault, Engine mechanical condition
P 302 Definition: Cylinder 2 Misfire
Explanation: Vacuum leak on engine
Probable Cause: Ignition system misfire condition, Fuel injector fault, Engine mechanical condition
P 303 Definition: Cylinder 3 Misfire
Explanation: Vacuum leak on engine
Probable Cause: Ignition system misfire condition, Fuel injector fault, Engine mechanical condition
Prior to making any purchases I noticed that I started losing some pickup, primarily in lower gears between 2-3k RPM's. Praying that it was somehow just the coils/plugs I bought the R8 pack for both and replaced them this evening. Engine starts up and continues to misfire. I have not had a chance to have it scanned but it would appear it isn't the plugs or coils.
When the plugs were removed, there was an 'oily' substance on the threads, which also seemed like it could have been burnt off fuel or oil pushed up from the cylinder. Also 2 of the plugs seemed looser than the others and didn't feel properly sealed. New R8 install included proper plugs for STOCK application, as I do not run any tuning, and i installed with the appropriate plug grease added lightly to the threads.
I took the car for a spin with the R8 coils/plugs installed to compare it to how the car was doing prior the install. Car misfires and seems fine (relatively) at idle and revving to 2-3k rpm yields NO change. It is almost unable to accelerate up a hill, or go past 30 MPH without the car shaking and any gear higher than 3rd seems not drivable. I feel these are my potential diagnoses before i bring it somewhere and have it looked at.
In Order of Most Likely:
1) Fuel Injectors
2) Air Intake
3) High Pressure Fuel Pump
4) Electronic Leads for the Coils
5) Battery Needs Changed
6) Chain Tensioner Failure
7) Coils and Sparks are all Bad, and I am an idiot
I would prefer to do this work myself and can afford the parts. I just didn't want to be fooling around all month without a mode of transportation to get to and from work.

Recently purchased 2003 golf gti 1.8t that had a leak on left side of engine i think it was engine coolant hose flange it Didn't leak much and coolant stayed at 190. I took the car to a mechanic and he replaced the leaking hose but now the car rises past 190 at idle.

I have a 2005 1.8 TJetta GLI owned for about 2 months now. Gas cap warning pops up then goes away when I turn off the car then check engine light comes on. I've change the gas cap to new oem one changed the purge valve [URL] .... After a couple of weeks same issues again brought it to my mechanic he ran a leak detector and told me that there are Evap leaks. I read somewhere that I might need a need charcoal canister and a fuel tank.

My 2003 GTI 24V VR6 is leaking coolant pretty quickly from the passenger side of the engine compartment. I have a new water pump in hand. If I'm replacing the water pump, would it be smart to go ahead and order a thermostat and metal crack-pipe to replace at the same time that I'm having the water pump installed? I'd hate to get the water pump installed, and find out that the leak is at the crack pipe.

I accidentally scraped the bugger off with my ice scraper a couple of years ago. I was actually lucky enough to find it once all of the snow melted, and was able to just pop it back in. However, of course, that is all cosmetic, and is no longer functional. I would like to regain this functionality, but can't seem to find a way to access the nozzle from the under side of the hatch. It's an '07.

After 1-2 mins I turn off my car I hear a popping sound from under the car. Usually it goes after some sounds of cooling down the metal and ticking, and then a pop sound. Nothing during the driving. I did some research and found that it may be Catalytic Converter cooling down or the heat shield.

Passat (2012 3.6 SEL, 7500 mi) making a loud knock noise from the underside of the car. It happens, without fail, every time I pull it out of my garage, and often when I'm coming to a stop or pulling out of a parking spot, etc.
I have taken it to the dealer numerous times, only to have the "failed to replicate, operating as designed" on the service tag. The car has been in for so many other things, this is just another issue I mention to them every time. Since the other issues (aside from the rattles) have been fixed, I'll make this my primary concern...until something else wiggs out on the car.

I've been getting some "heat shield like" sounding rattle from the underside of the car when taking off. It seems to be coming from under the engine area, I don't think it's the heat shield over the cat since I've had that before and that was the first thing I checked, it's all tight. Is there another shield under the engine that can cause this?
