Golf/GTI VI :: Metal Ball Rolling Noise In Rear Part At Moderate Speeds

Aug 8, 2011

Some of you may have seen my thread on my new car: [URL] ....

Its got just over 500 miles on it and I have noticed that at moderate speeds(40-50), if i turn, I hear a noise in the rear part of my car as if there's a metal ball rolling inside. I've already checked and there's absolutely no loose objects or any objects for that matter.

I checked the spare wheel bay, removed the spare, and found this beauty just sitting. Where it came from or why it was there.

Prius (2010-12) :: Metal Ball Rolling Sound When Coming To A Stop

I have noticed an odd sound when coming to a stop. It sounds like a metal ball or two rolling forward when I brake then roll back and hit something when i come to a complete stop. At first i thought it was just something rolling around in the center console but I haven't found anything. What is under the center console/drivers seat that may have something that could roll like that?

Passat (B6) :: Metal Part Of Front Wheel Scraping When Driving At Slow Speeds

When driving at slow speeds and when I go over a bump in the road, I'll hear something like the metal part of the wheel scraping something as its turning. Only comes from the front drivers side wheel. It's audible enough that people usually turn to look when I'm in a parking lot.

Took it to the dealer, they 'test drove' it. Said they couldn't hear anything. Then said that whatever I'm hearing is 'normal suspension noise'. So after leaving it a full day at the dealer, nothing has changed. Since when is ANY suspension noise normal? But I don't think its the suspension. What to do? Take it back? Take it to another dealer?

Golf V R32 :: Metal Grinding Noise In Rear

For the last week or so been noticing as I'm slowing down, brake or no brake, a metallic, grinding noise coming from the rear passenger side. Does not sound like a humming worn wheel bearing noise. Its pretty loud, almost clunky and not always consistant. Then the last day or so have noticed it on the right side. At higher speeds....faintly hear a ticking... The car has 48K on it.

Ford F-150 - 1997-2003 :: Metal On Metal Noise Coming From Rear After About 25 To 35 Mph

My father's 1997 F150 with the 4.6 two wheel drive, has me stumped again. I have a lot of mechanic knowledge but this one has got me wondering whats going on. Here is the run down. When you are driving down the road, it rides just fine and makes no noises from 0-20 MPH, after about 25 to 35 mph it makes like a metal on metal noise that is coming from the rear, and forces the truck to slow down, when you try to accelerate through this problem it has a bad bang and it wont allow you to speed up anymore, it does not seem like a brake issue (but I could be wrong) since it does not actually pull to one side or the other.

It seems like an equal force trying to stop the truck. I have heard rear ends that were going out and they make clunk noises or whirring noises etc, but its still some what driveable. I have checked the rear end oil and it does have oil in it, and its probably about an inch from the full level (but that shouldnt cause this issue im sure). My father wants a definite answer before we start tearing this thing apart to try and fix it. Since its mostly used to take trash off, and also get the kids down the dirt road to the bus stop.

Golf IV / Jetta IV :: 2003 GLS Steering Wheel Shakes At Moderate / High Speeds

Car: 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T

The car is starting to produce a heavy shake in the steering wheel when above 45mph up through highway speeds. The kicker is that the shake only occurs on-center, because turning the wheel just a few degrees off creates a relatively smooth result.

Checked the wheels for balance, tire wear [which is good, no cupping], lower control arm (LCA) bushings, and complete a lock-to-lock steering test on the ground to confirm steering rack mounting bolts are tight. What's the next pieces of hardware I'm needing to verify?

-I've checked the lugs, they are secure.

Car has springs and spacers.

Golf/GTI VI :: Screeching / Metal On Metal Noise When Engaging Clutch?

For the past few months, pretty consistently, whenever I engage the clutch from full stop into first gear (it does it when starting in second gear too; and reverse) there is a pretty obnoxious and loud screeching noise that I would liken to a subway/train braking or just metal on metal grinding situation. When I took the car in to Douglas for an oil change and APR Stg 1 flash, they told me it's just the brakes being cold, etc. After driving the car some more, I really doubt that it's the brakes and I can reproduce this regularly by slowly releasing the clutch and get the noise usually just before the gear engages.

That car has just over 16K on the clock and has never been abused. The clutch pedal feels fine and there is no issue shifting into any of the gears other than the noise. No mods other than the APR Stage 1.

Passat (B6) :: Metal Grinding Noise At Low Speeds?

Ok so 11 days into ownership and only slightly over 800 miles the car started to act funny. First the common DVD nav issue (no disk in drive message).

Second issue is a strange metal on metal rubbing noise when turning at low speeds (i.e. in parking lots). When I make a big turn (either direction) it sounds like either the brake calipers aren't releasing fully and is causing the pad and disk to rub, or something else is rubbing.

This actually happened once yesterday on the highway as well. going 75mph, a very loud metal on metal rubbing noise.

Seems to only happen when temps outside are below 40. It warmed up yesterday afternoon and the noise went away, but after it got cold again last night, the noise came back.

Golf/GTI VI :: Rear Right Window Keeps Rolling Down On Its Own

So today I detailed the car, as I am moving on to do the windows *(last thing). My rear right window started acting up.

1. I rolled it down to clean the top.
2. I clicked for it roll up and it did
3. 1/2 second later it rolls back down on its own all the way down *(well as far as they roll down on the back).
4. I click again once for it roll up and it does, but 1/2 second later rolls back down on its own.

So I walked over to driver side to use controls on that side and same thing kept happening. The only way to get it to stay up was to roll it up, and take the key out as soon as its up all the way. It kept doing it for some time, not sure what to do. I literally very lightly tapped on the rubber housing thats between the door jam and frame *(when you open the door) and window is now working fine.

I am about 150 miles of 36K

Santa Fe (DM - 2013+) :: Grinding Noise Coming From Rear Of Vehicle On Sharp Turns Under Moderate Acceleration

I own a Canadian 2013 Santa Fe sport AWD 2.0l turbo. Back in June/ July 2015 I noticed a poping / grinding noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when ever I made sharp turns under moderate acceleration. I brought my car into the dealer as it was still under warranty. They diagnosed the problem to be my viscous coupler apparently it was defective.

The part was ordered and replaced about 3 weeks later. After the warranty work was completed in still noticed a noise coming from the back end. I took my car back to the dealer. They found that the rear tires were "cupped" they recommended to get a 4 wheel alignment to solve the cupping issue.

In my past experiences tire cupping is usually caused by a worn out suspension component such as bad shocks. So to avoid conflict of interest I took my car to Canadian Tire to get the alignment checked and adjusted.

Sure enough the front wheels only were slightly out of alignment and a minor adjustment was made. No adjustments made to the rear. The technician advised me that due to the minor adjustment, the alignment would not cause my rear wheels to cup. The complete suspension was checked and no problems were found.

So...would a bad viscous coupler cause wheel cupping???

My Santa Fe had 48000kms at the time of the original noise was detected.

I do not tow a trailer or haul overloaded loads.

The majority of kilometres made Is done on highway.

The rear tires have now been rotated to the front.

Lexus GS 2006-11 :: Golf Ball Like Rattle Heard From Passenger Rear Side

I've been trying to pin point this golf ball rattle i hear from my passenger rear side of my car. I though it was the sway bar end links wearing out, so i changed those along with a pair of new rear struts as they were leaking.

I was still getting the that rattles when i drove on bumpy roads. I then though it was the sway bar bushings going out on me so i took the sway bar off to eliminate it all together.....WRONG AGAIN.

Ok, it must be something behind the bumper right? before i start pulling the bumper clips my spider man senses zoned in on the passenger rear wheel caliper that i had changed 6 months ago due to a rusted guide pin that i acquire while i was living in snow country New York.

I began rocking the caliper and to my surprise the damn thing was moving very loosely.

Time for some maintenance: Turned out that the lower guide pin on the 6 month old caliper was loose. Cleaned it up and tighten it with an Allen key applied some crc brake grease, installed new brake pads and hardware and that took care of that damn rattling.

BMW - 325 :: Steering Sticky On Curvy Roads At Moderate Speeds

I have a 2003 BMW 325xi wagon with mileage of 56k. In warm weather and when the car warms up, on roads with lots of alternating curves, at moderate speeds, on some right turns, the steering will offer a slight resistance and then give. On left turns, there is sometimes a slight loose feeling and a corresponding resistance when I straighten out after the curve. This intermittent problem occurs rarely in a parking lot, as if the workout on a curvy road is necessary to cause the issue. When it occurs in a parking lot, the "give" after the resistance is accompanied by an audible "thump". This noise presumably occurs all the time but is masked by the noises of the car in motion.

The dealer in my home town could not recreate the problem until the visit where I took the mechanic for a ride and the thunk noise happened once. They said the steering U joint was the problem and "Replace steering u joint and filter housing gasket and vanos oil line. Perform power steering flush".

After this work and a trip to the mountains, the problem seemed worse, with the issue spreading to left turns. I complained to my home town dealer, who offered not much more than his sympathies.

I took the car to a dealer near our mountain retreat. He said my home town dealer had not performed the power steering flush and that he recommended doing it, even though he doubted it would fix the problem. He did hear the thunk (he called a pop) when the car was on the rack, and he ruled out every issue but the power steering rack, which he says to replace. What steps can I take to ensure proper diagnosis?
