Golf/GTI VI :: Front Center Console / Ashtray Lid Will Not Close
Feb 21, 2012
As stated in title, it stays open half way. I was thinking just converting it to none lid one since I always keep it open, and I believe the non closing one would hold more items?

You know that little storage compartment with the electric socket (looks like an ashtray), well all of a sudden today mine won't stay closed. I've had it get stuck closed, but never stuck open, how to know exactly where the hinge is? Could it be stuck in the closed position? Or is it a spring or something? I know I could take it to the dealer and have it fixed but I really don't have time to drop it there.

I need to do various jobs concerning my center console (I need to change ashtray bulb!!). How to remove it, I've been told to start from the back (removing rear ashtray and cupholder).

The top half of my center console will not close and it appears a piece of metal broke loose from the locking mechanism. (See photos) ....
I have two questions. Is this one of those wear and tear items not covered under the warranty? (I have 13 months left on the OEM warranty). If it is not covered, do I have to replace the whole console or is there a separate part I can buy to fix it myself.

My ashtray opened and now will not close. I can push it in but it opens again. This probably requires me to take it out and I am not sure how to remove the ashtray.

My ashtray has been open for as long as I can remember because when I close it, it rattles. I have a Lariat with the center console. What should be done to fix ashtray rattle, pics would be useful.

I took this picture from the rear seat while leaning over the front seats. The two white arrows indicate where our front seats are rubbing the center console while we are seated. The rubbing makes a noise and will eventually leave a wear mark on the leather, the console or both. Any way to quiet the noise and to cushion the contact between the leather and the center console?
I'm looking for a product that is safe for leather that will decrease friction in this area so that the rubbing won't cause noise or leave wear marks on the leather. I'm only interested in treating the area of the seat that contacts the console so as not to change the overall appearance of the leather. Alternatively, I could treat the center console with a product that will make it more slippery.

I'm going to be hard wiring a protech cell phone mount at the center vents. I'd like to run a clean install, and ideally tap into the existing 12v socket next to the shifter. It looks like I'll need to take a fair amount apart.

I am having trouble finding on how to remove my center console. Looking for some instructions, preferably without taking out the seats.
Due to the clear stuff flaking off i need to repaint it so I've decided to give it a go and feel clueless.

It been a few days since I heard this extrange noise behind my center console, its very hard to describe, I though it was the CD exchanger of my radio unit but its not, sound similar. Has this ever happened to you before?

My R is an earlier model with the Aux-in in the glovebox. I cannot think of a more inconvenient place to put an aux in cable which is why they change it I am sure. I would like to reroute the existing one or at least add an extender cable from the glove box to one of the unused buttons near the ash tray.

How do you remove the shifter box from the center console for the 5 speed mk6? how do you drop it out of the car?

Is there a better option to the standard MDI insert in the centre console? I was sure I'd seen a photo of an insert that kept the MDI but didn't waste then entire console. Am I just crazy? I mean come on, it doesn't even fit an iPhone very well. I have to put the phone in head first and then bend the cable flat to close the arm rest...

About a week ago I noticed this weird noise that sounds like it's coming from inside of the center vents area/console.
The noise definitely only occurs when moving, or at least it seems that way. At idle there is no sound. The sound seems to get a little louder the faster I go.
It's kind of a "whirring" sound. It's not really loud and if someone that had never been in the car were driving they probably wouldn't even notice it. It almost sounds as if I have the heating/ac fan turned up high but I don't. The sound appears even if I have the heat/ac fan off.The heat/ac works fine.
It may have nothing to do with the heat/ac but I'm wondering if something could have got stuck in the vents from outside?

I just started observing this today. The center console cover often refuses to rise up when depressed to unlock . If I try about 10 - 20 times, while using the other hand to facilitate swinging around the hinge, it eventually co-operates. I removed the MDI connector to be sure it wasn't causing the issue

I have a 5-speed and my center shifter console is completely broken. I went to the junk yard and didn't find any manuals but plenty of autos. Is an auto console the same? It looks like the only difference is the boot/selector area.

Theres a loud rattling noise coming from somewhere inside the center console, where the shift lever is, that's annoying as hell! Sounds like a metal ball bearing bouncing around against other metal pieces. I put my fingers down there and touched everything I could to try to stop the rattling but I couldn't. I did not remove the foam insulation.

I am trying to figure out the best way to wire something from the ash tray area to the fuse box. Removing the trim is simple enough by the steering wheel, but I can't find how to remove the trim that surrounds the center console on the driver's side. Any pointers?

Completely stock, no swap. No motor noise when I click the buttons on forward, back, up or down. Nothing. Everything looks connected under the seat but not entirely sure. Fuse 1 and 44 are good on the side of the dash. This is for a 2003 Wagon with GLX interior and most upgrades from the factory. I need to move the seat in order to remove the center console/radio cage as it's blocking the armrest nut.

This morning I opened my center console armrest to tuck the iPod cord back in, when I went to lower the armrest it only dropped about 1/5th the total amount it would need to close. I fooled with it for long enough to know If I continue to apply more pressure something is going to break. The movement it has is smooth until the point it abruptly stops. I checked the owners manual with no luck, called the dealer service center which came up empty handed as well.

I have a mk4 R32 74k miles on it ... I recently brought the car to the dealer and I will never do it again !!! Never had any problems until now .. I brought it in for the radio and they diagnose the problem so they ordered me a new radio that's all they looked at and it's the only time it ever went into the dealership .. Today I start the car and I have a ticking noise coming from behind the center console radio glovebox area and I can't figure it out ?? I thought it was vibration from the motor so I gave it a little gas in neutral nothing ?? I turned the radio on and off still have the noise ? Turned on an off the climate control still have the noise ?? Don't know what it is ? Friends say it sounds like a relay that's coming on and off ??
