Golf/GTI VI :: Exhaust Growl When Let Off The Gas / Sputtering Sound
Jan 23, 2014
2011 stock gti. Was fine yesterday before work, then after work I noticed it sounded a little bit louder, and I hear the exhaust growl when I let off the gas. Car feels a little bit different too. Slight vibration under my feet it seems.
No codes or anything. I also noticed this morning when I pulled into the driveway over the little lip at the front of the driveway the exhaust made a sort of sputtering sound.

I was running errands yesterday, left the car for an hour, then got back in and noticed that the deep rumble of the exhaust that I love was suddenly gone. The car seemed fine when driving, but the wookie growl only showed up for a few moments. No CEL. What could be causing this?

So I washed my R yesterday, and then when I started to drive to the store and my car started to sputter and it would let me rev. I think I may have gotten water into the exhaust...but I'm not to sure what really happen.

Not sure where to even start this but ill try to keep in concise. 03 gli 24v 6 speed. 125500 miles. At about 123500, i start noticing this slightly growly bearing sound at idle, without the clutch pedal pressed. When you press the clutch pedal, it goes away. Waited a bit, and at 125k, i replaced the clutch, flywheel, and throwout bearing, thinking it was a bad throwout bearing. It wasnt that.
Next, after more research, it seemed the 02m 6 speeds have had some issue with input shaft bearings wearing out making similar noises. So, pull the trans back out, and send it to APTuning in PA. Have new input shaft bearings, upper and lower pinion shaft bearings, and diff bearings put in. Even though they said they saw no major wear to be worried about in any of them. And here we are, left with the same noise.
One of the guys at APTuning said they had a case with one car where the thrust bearings wore so bad it made for a similar condition. Where the car would make unpleasant noise without the pedal pressed, and would go away when a load was put on it with the pedal. SO, i guess what im asking is, is there validity to that? What are the chances my otherwise seemingly fine 24v has this issue and end play is so bad that is causing this noise?
The noise gets NOTICEABLY louder when the car is hot. Its almost silent on cold starts. But after 15 miles or so it can be heard almost voice level with the windows down when you're stopped and idling; it really hurts to drive it being a caring owner hearing it. The motor is still in the car with all accessories so i can't check the end play scientifically. But to be fair, if this is plausible, and is the issue, i dont think it'd take precision to tell.
I'm so deep into this, and thought I've ruled out everything yet the noise persists. Really at a loss..
Listen around :30 where I start to cycle the clutch pedal. When I press it, you hear the main shaft "spin down" and the noise go away. When I release the pedal again, you here the clunk and the noise again. Its also been sitting for 3 hours. Good bit louder when hot [URL] .....

Haven't had my Azera Limited 3.8L very long. Got it because I wanted a comfortable cruiser.
Because today, I was on a fairly short acceleration lane trying to merge onto a busy Interstate. As I was getting ready to slip into the only large opening between 2 vehicles, the rear one, a black Escalade, started to speed up. With the end of the short on-ramp coming up fast, I stomped on the throttle.
Didn't expect to hear the engine/exhaust growl so loud when the full 260 hp kicked in. Surprised me and my passengers. I know it's fuel injected, but the sound reminded me of the huge secondaries opening on a Holley four barrel carburetor. Wouldn't be surprised if the Escalade driver also heard it as my Azera jumped ahead an easily merged.

I have been having towing with the X. I have been getting a growl lately sounds like the front left wheel bearing. Today I jacked it up and did the wiggle text. I have a very slight wiggle in both wheels. Is a slight wiggle normal? I know the bearing on the left is more than likely gone as the growl goes away when I jerk the steering wheel. But I haven't heard any noise from the right side yet.

I have a 2005 Subaru Legacy wagon with 190k. The exhaust(original) has a tiny hole in a pipe that looks like Y and splits to the two mufflers.
Can some thing like this get repaired or do you have to replace the entire exhaust?

Every time after he shifts you can hear a crisp bhrrrt sound. Is that particular sound directly related to the tune the car has or is it something else?
I have an APR tune stage 2 and do not get these bhrrrt sounds after shifts. Or will I get these when I go stage 2+? Is it a DSG thing?
I've seen some UM and GIAC tuned R's sound similar. Leads me to believe it may be related to type of tune you have. Is this correct?
I currently have 42DD TBE with VWR CIA.

I have had the raspy sound both from stock exhaust and TT exhaust. Is this cat related? heads related? anyway to avoid it?

Second gear, I am going 40mph and I let off the throttle and start engine breaking. My exhaust burbles and crackle a LOT. Now, I love the sound. But just want to make sure it is normal. I just took my rear seats out, so I am not sure if it is louder / there because of that, or its just a coincidence.
I read a thread a while back where a fellas intake changeover failed and it started doing that really loud as well.

My wife just got his car and she loves it!. its a 1.8t 5 speed. Runs and drives awesome. She had 2 new beetles before this one with the same motor but they both had 2 1/2 exhaust from the turbo back. The jetta will be done soon but it has this slight growl when its idling sometimes. Doesn't seem like its every time or may be it seems more when its warmed up. We had just changed the timing belt and tensioner and water pump but we did it 2 days after we got it so I am not sure if it did it before or not.
Kinda sounds like a bad needle bearing where when you spin it and can feel little bumps in it...don't know if that makes sense or not. You can kind of feel it when your sitting in it but its hard to say because we just got it. I don't remember the beetles doing it though but may be the exhaust kinda made it less noticeable. It did have a code about exhaust something bank 1?? I am thinking the cat might be bad or the o2 sensors. i have more sensors im gonna try but when i do the exhaust I know the light will be on anyway.

On my mk7 manual, I'm getting a slight growly noise when I shift upwards, mostly noticeable from 1 to 2, a bit less from 2 to 3, and almost none from there up. Nothing when I downshift.
It's almost like a DSG fart, but much subtler. Happens for like a split second, just when I release the clutch, as if it the engine is revving up right when the clutch is engaging. But I know it's not engine related, because my RPM remains steady. Can it be the clutch slipping a bit before it fully locks? Not even sure if that's even a thing.

I took delivery of my GTI last Friday and I'm loving the car so far. Coming from a 2001 Miata LS, this car is so much smoother and quiet. I especially love the engine and the sound it makes, or lack thereof. It's barely noticeable until I stomp on the gas and then there's a lovely ... growl? rumble? I'm trying to think of how to describe the sound to friends who cannot hear it firsthand.
BTW, I haven't noticed the dreaded turbo wastegate rattle between 2-3K RPMs so, no, it's not that.

This morning on the freeway, I was going to pass someone in 6th gear, put the pedal down start accelerating like normal, then suddenly at a little over 3k RPM the sound of the exhaust gets a lot deeper and it accelerates a little bit harder.
I know that boost starts to really kick in at about 3k RPM, but I have never noticed the exhaust get deeper like that. I did it a few more times and it seemed to stop doing it. I didn't notice the tachometer jumping around or anything so I don't think it is clutch slip.

So I installed my intake....again this weekend and have been monitoring it to make sure it doesn't pop off again. When you first start up, there is a very loud growl coming from the intake that lasts about 20 seconds. I also noticed that the breather filter kicks in during this time as well. Is this normal? I would yes but want to understand exactly why...

I have a 94 ranger 4L. I am looking for a more loud exhaust sound in/outside the truck and at idle. I have had a cherry bomb turbo on it and it was ok but not loud enough for my liking. I just picked up a flowmaster 40 2 days ago and it sounds good but again just not loud enough for my taste and kinda a lot more. I was looking for a louder muffler that is not a glasspack and would like to stay under like 80 or so.
I also thought about getting a high flow cat which i think might make some more sound but was not sure. Im running the stock pipe which is 2" and end in back of the wheel on the right. I look at the Hooker Headers Maximum Flow Muffler which i thought would be louder b/c it's more straight through the muffler so it would put off more sound better. What would u recommend for something more loud ?

I just got a brand new 2008 F150 supercrew FX2 last wed. I love it, it's my first truck ever and I'm excited to drive it. I wanted to change the exhaust to something that has a low rumble and is deep, not too loud or anything.

I have a 95 f150, Eddie Bauer, extended cab, 4x4, 302, 285 tires. My question is this... What happens if I remove the second cat. I am trying to get a better sound from the exhaust and have been told the second cat is making that impossible. There is no o2 sensor downstream of the second cat, so I'm thinking the computer will never know its gone. Also how well this affect power. With the bigger tires, it's kinda sluggish off the line.

I have recently come across a strange problem. Only occurs after car has been turned off and sitting for 1-2 hours. Weather not affecting and sitting overnight, car starts normal and nice.
After the 1-2 hours of sitting, engine will turn over not the 2 or 3 usual times for ignition, but needing 10-12 times to finally start. Then it starts very poorly by making a sputtering sound and only idling at 200-500 rpms, instead of the usual instant 1000 rpms. This is very annoying and a few times the engine has turned over 10-12 times and didn't start at all. When a person starts the car up every 1 to 2 hours, say on a busy errand weekend, it pretty much occurs each time. When my wife uses the car just in the morning for work and at the end of the work day, it is not noticed for some reason....

I have a 2000 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV. 104,000 miles. Has always ran great. The last few days it has had a sputtering almost knocking sound that gets worse when put into gear or the ac turned on. I changed the oil and checked all fluids. Looks good. Only thing I had done was fill it up this past monday after a storm. My mother in law told me afterwards that the particular station always has complaints after rain and has leaks in their tanks. I'm assuming I may have gotten water into the system. Would this cause these problems? And is it ok to drive it out or should it be flushed. I've added a can of Iso Heat and am now down to 1/4 tank. I had planned on getting a little lower on fuel and filling up with Premium. I've never had a problem like this before so not really sure the best way to track the problem or fix it. Or it may be something else all together.

I just got a new clutch and clutch slave cylinder in my 1998 Ford Explorer. Driving it home from the mechanic, I'm hearing a sputtering sound coming from what seems to be the lower part of the engine compartment. It sounds like a VW Bug exhaust. I've never heard this sound before. It's troubling that it has appeared now immediately following a repair. I presume there is a outside possibility that it's not the mechanics doing, but that seems improbable. (The engine was revving high right before the clutch blew out last week, so maybe those brief high revs caused some damage? I can't imagine that being the case.) Or was there something in the clutch repair process that could have resulted in this?
I made a recording of the sound here.......
