Golf/GTI VI :: Dirt / Debris Around Oil Fill Cap?
Jul 31, 2010
Noticed the dirt that collects around the oil fill cap?? What are you all doing to get that stuff out of there. Mine was filled with loose dirt when I was checking my oil today and didn't want any of the dirt to go down into the cam area. Looks poorly designed.
I noticed most of the dirt when I took the cap off. Seems like cleaning with a cloth would just push it into the cam area.

While I was changing the oil yesterday, I also changed the fuel filters. The primary filter had some debris that was confirmed by a magnet to be metal. I have seen a little bit of this all three times I have changed the filters. The filter itself is very clean, but there remains a small amount of metal slightly more coarse than filings.
I don't really have any concerns that it could be coming from the HPFP because that is after the secondary filter and would not be returned to the tank. Also anything from the HPFP would have fouled several injectors by now. I don't even think there is any iron in the pump.
I guess it could be useful to put a magnet in the water separator reservoir, but I don't even know what good that would do since the debris is large enough that it is being caught by the filter and of course the secondary filter is even less microns. It would just be nice to know where in the world this stuff comes from.

What I should use to fill the holes on my front bumper? I know how to get paint to make it blend in but what should I use as a filler?

I have lost fuel pressure within 10 minutes of a fill up. I have an APR Stage2+ set up. I have added octane booster . Fault codes are showing loss of pressure. Is it possible my HPFP rebuild has taken after like 15K miles?:bang head: Also could be clogged fuel filter or injector I am aware.

I just replaced my radiator in my vr6 jetta. I've replaced my coolant before, with this same problem, but it never affected anything and did not find any answers. But here's the deal. It filled with about 2 gallons of mixed coolant. No noticeable air bubble sounds, coolant flows back into the reservoir. I opened my top rad hose and poured coolant in also. It is not overheating. My heater is also hot, no problems there. It just seems suspicious that my car takes so little coolant, and runs just fine. I also flushed the system with my garden hose, and let all the water drain out.

I have a 2013 GTI manual 6 speed with 18K very gently driven miles. Yesterday I noticed coolant on the garage floor and checked the reservoir which was below the fill line.
Went to dealer this morning .....bad water pump. I asked if this was unusual for such a new car with low miles and service writer said yes. After googling water pump failures of GTi's I learned this was not the case.

I had the PCV valve replaced around 60K, then at the next service they wanted to do it again (not reading the records that they had already done it). Then at 80K they wanted to do it again, I declined. Today it was in for 85K service and they said "the PCV valve is dirty and needs to be replaced." The advisor told me after the initial replacement at 60K the interval is 20-25K miles.

This morning I went to the self serve junkyard to pull some parts, in a hurry to get back to my car I place my tool box that had some oil, grease and dirt on the bottom of it, on to my rear seat.

That tiny strip of glass under the rear spoiler is so poorly designed. Dirt got trapped on it so easily and it gets worse in the rain, it's like frosted glass.

I have a 2010 elantra with 60000k that I always had the required maintenence done on it. 3 weeks ago I took it in for an oil change. I just biticed a few oil spots in ground on passenger side and checked my oil level. When I pulled out the dipstick the re was dirt on it or something. its never been like that before. What could cause that? Seems like it happened after the last oil change. Also could the leak be from the oil filter? Heres a pic of the rag after I wiped the stick.

I think the door when closed leaves too much space for dirt and mud to accumulate. Especially combined with the fact that the car has no mud guards. Usually wont complain about something like this but this happens just a day or 2 after detailing the car.

Just back from a 300 mile run back in light to moderate rain. Car performed beautifully running probably 95% at speeds of 70 or 65. 45MPG with a/c on and cruise where I could. Considering the added drag of plowing through water, I figure that is pretty good especially since I was not driving to maximize MPG, I was anxious to get there and into my own bed.
Got home and went to unload it and noticed a band of dark dirt perhaps 1" wide on both rear doors conforming to the rear edge of the door just forward of where the door edge meets the door pillar.
Was never off road or in a construction zone. Doors were closed normally. Rest of car clean except for a few bugs that were fatally attracted to the lights.
Is this typical? Or a sign of misalignment? Caused by some air being evacuated from the car's interior?

My 2003 Honda Element sometimes generates a vibration that feels just like driving down a washboard dirt road. You know one that the ridges are very close together. This only happens around 40 MPH with a load on the engine. At first I thought it was a wheel, tire or suspension issue. But I can make it stop instantly by pushing or releasing the gas pedal. So this leads me to think it is transmission related. This is a automatic. I would like to see the car sometime but would not feel right about passing on this problem without knowing the cost to fix it. Stumped in Seattle.

2002 4Runner 4x4, 180K miles. I bought this car about a year ago and don't know anything about its history before that but it seems to be in good shape.
About every month or two I take a trip that includes driving a few miles on a dirt road. It is a graded road in pretty decent shape. What has happened about 6 times during the year is that the CEL comes on while I am driving on the dirt road. The car continues to run well. When I get home and hook up my code reader the code is always P0420 Catalyst efficiency below threshold.
To save everyone the trouble of looking that up, this code indicates that either the upstream or downstream A/F Ratio sensor is bad. If both sensors test good then it is probably a bad cat.
What is different here is that after I clear the code, the CEL stays off as long as I stay on paved roads. So to summarize, I don't get the code every time I drive on a dirt road but every time the CEL has come on it is while I was on a dirt road.
So it seems that something about driving on a dirt road causes the CEL. Two obvious things you get on a dirt road are dust and vibration. What could be causing this? I did a visual inspection of the whole exhaust but did not see anything obvious such as cracks or leaks.
And of course I could live with this if I have to since it comes up under such limited circumstances. I just like to keep my cars running properly.

We have an 07 F150 XL reg cab. Having problem with the doors rattling going down a dirt or bumpy road. They sound almost as if door weren't shut rite even though they are slammed shut. We took it in to the dealer and they said they adjusted and replaced door stops but we still have the same problem. plus they said they could not duplicate.

So, I assisted my sister in finding my nephew a used car and everything looked great on the surface as well as mechanical. We get the car home and the SRS light comes on.. I started digging into why and find there is dirt dust all behind the dash and side panels around airbags in back and pretty much everywhere below the surface.
Digging into the service records I see they did have to replace a fender liner which might have been a port of entry for all the dirt and dust. Apparently the young driver was putting in mileage on dry dirt roads without a fender liner.
I did caution against buying this car previously, even before looking at it, because it was a teenage driver, there was a minor wreck into driver's door and repairs had to be made for him running up on a curb as well. But in their desperation for a car.. they asked me to check out the mechanics of it.. i did.. they looked good.. but I missed all this dirt dust and now i feel bad.
Anyways, how to go about cleaning out all this dirt dust behind the dash, and panels of the car? I worried if I leave it there, he will experience additional expensive electronic issues.
Was thinking of taking off some side panels and dash off, and using a vacuum with a brush head to try and get it.. I could use compressed air.. but perhaps that may be potentially harmful to other electronics and connections?
As for the SRS light, i was able to count the light flashes in dash to get code 8-3 off of the flashing SRS light and a 7-1 off the ABS light. Referencing those: "Internal Failure of SRS unit".

I'm suspecting a small valve cover gasket leak. I've noticed dirt starting to accumulate near the alternator side of the front valve cover, there is dirt on there stuck to oil, I don't see any wet oil but its so minor the dirt just sticks to it. 107k miles here. Seems to be a common problem. I think Downhiller had a large oil leak, source unknown around his crank pulley area. You wouldn't think a car this young would leak oil. It's not bad, I havn't had to top any off I just like a mildly clean engine.

I just got a 2007 Prius and using it mostly on a dirt/rough road. My problem is that there is a metal cranking noise coming from under car and trunk. This is nit happened when i drive on a good road.
I already asked the mechanic to check sway bar, shocks, struts, and brake. They said everything is okay except the front left strut boots which is already worn out. But the strut itself is still in good condition.
I'm OK everything except the noise. Already replaced new tires but it doesn't work....

My 2016 Ford F-250 has 14,000 miles on it. I took it in for its second oil change today and came away with big problems. When the mechanic pulled the dipstick out he found it covered with a guncky dirt like material. He said he had never seen anything like it. He changed the oil and checked it again with more gunk coming out. I drove it to the nearest Ford house where a mechanic pulled the dipstick out and found the same thing. He said that he had never seen anything like it. Every time he pulled the dipstick out, it had more coated on it.
