Golf/GTI VI :: Clutch Rattles From The First Day
Jul 20, 2010
I've had my Golf for about two and a half weeks now. Since the first day, I noticed a soft rattle coming from the car wheel sitting in neutral with the clutch out. If I push the clutch in, it quiets down even further but is still existent. If it's in gear and under load no noise.
I bought the car with 48 miles on it IIRC.

So I have a issue at hand with a clutch I purchased and fly wheel. I bought a Spec Stg 2+ kit and fidanza lw flywheel. As soon as I installed it the rattle seemed a little harsh and would change noise levels every time I would engage and disengage it. Then the shifting became a issue about 1000 miles in not being able to get it into gear (thats what she said) the clutch felt spongy and not solid. So I just recently pulled it out (real men dont pull out). Everything looked fine...odd.
SO I contacted Spec and they told me after inspecting the pictures that the self adjusting pressure plate was mis-adjusted and stuck and needed to be put into a vice to release the springs to put it back to normal. Hence why I had bad shifting eventually etc. Had less than 10,000 miles on the set up...fml. Spec has been extremely useful but I do not have the funds to buy another clutch from them. So im debating on putting it back into my car after resetting the pressure plate or just getting another clutch kit from a different company. I was also told to just go back to the stock clutch and pressure plate with the fidanza flywheel

Im tentative to take the gti into service for a window rattle/rub because I know they will pull everything off the door and cause more rattles in resolving the window issue.
However, the issue is when the windows are all the way up or almost all the way up there is this "rubbing" noise, not really a rattle, coming from the top corner of the windows.
Its almost like they are forcing themselves up to far and creaking over every bump in the road. Its loud enough (and close enough to my ears) that its pretty damn annoying.

On my 2 door GTI, I had 2 rattles. One was coming from the door latch mechanism, and the other was coming from the black plastic b pillar trim. I picked up a can of "Blaster" silicon spray from Home Depot and sprayed just a little bit into the latching mechanism (on the door side). So far this has completely eliminated the knocking noise that I would hear in the door when driving over bumps.
On my drive afterwards, I kept hearing the infamous noise from the b-pillar trim, which seems to be a result of heat expansion when going from cold temp.... how the piece would sit there creaking when the car wasn't even moving. Anyways, I sprayed some of the silicon lube onto a q-tip and applied it to the edge of the plastic b-pillar trim that runs along the inside edge of the door. I guess I put enough on the q-tip to get it inside the edge of the plastic where it touches the metal of the door.
So far, my car is quiet as a mouse. It feels so good to have my car sound like the day I drove it off the lot!
Disclaimer: It could be a coincidence and perhaps the b-pillar had finally warmed up to a temp where it stopped creaking on its own, but it DID stop creaking as soon as I drove off after applying the lube. I'll post back if anything changes.

Have the APR RSC exhaust - developed rattles, specifically in one of the RSC muffler chambers?
I've had my exhaust installed for almost 6 months. About 2-3 months ago, I noticed a rattle from under the car somewhere. I finally got underneath the car a few weeks ago to check it out and the rattle is most definitely coming from the rear RSC muffler (right before the exhaust tips). I'm positive that's the source and I'm guessing that the welds inside for the baffles / walls that compose the RSC technology failed, and a piece is now rattling around inside. It only rattles at low RPM, but it's loud (especially in a parking garage) and super embarrassing.

So I finally decided to look into all the little creaks and rattles that the R makes while going over bumps in the road.
-Wrapped the latches of the rear seats in electrical tape, and put adhesive velcro (soft side) on the back of the seats where it meets plastic.
-Took apart the center console and put adhesive felt around the areas where plastic makes contact with other plastic
-Put adhesive felt inside the aluminum trim & Monsoon radio to stop shaking
So all those little fixes eliminated most of the rattling sounds in the car. All that I need to look into are the driver and passenger doors to secure whatever is rattling/shaking inside those panels. Something to do this coming week. I normally would leave these noises alone, but damn they drive me crazy like it's a form of Chinese water torture. I hope to have no more rattles in the following week.

I have noticed as it gets colder, my car rattles more. I keep hearing random rattles, mainly in the door panels. Looking for remedy apart from going up to the dealership?

I have a non resonated exhaust and when I get on the gas, the spindle that holds down the spare tire in the hatch rattles like crazy. It is so loud. I have tried removing the spare tire and also removing the cap that holds down the spare tire. Nothing works.

This thread is about suspension though. Ever since installing my B&G coils my car has been making all kinds of funny noises. Originally I realized that the the top nuts for my struts were not nearly tight enough... which led to one of my struts having about 6 or 7 threads completely stripped from rubbing against the mount and not being tight. Completely disassembled the front shocks, made sure everything was kosher, and filled the passenger side with some washers before tightening everything down like a mofo (by hand, no air!) a few weeks ago. All was good.
Now, flash forward to now and it rattles all the time. Driving straight is usually when it makes noise. I immediately assumed it was loose top bolts as I had the same noise previously. I went down to buy some loctite and more tools so I could do the fix myself. Upon inspection, the bolts are still tight as hell. Tightening them rotates the spring, I can feel feel it pop if I rotate my ratchet far enough as the spring finally gives from rotation.
I checked the sway bars, axels, etc.... and nothing. I even went so far as to wrap everything down there in blue masking tape, put the wheel back on, drove around a while (made the noise like 20 times) and then jacked the car up to look again... not a single scratch on the tape. Some of it was still not even 100% pressed down. So my axels, sway bar, etc... have nothing to do with this (at least rubbing wise).
After doing all kinds of research both here and in the MKV forum, I've decided that this is probably due to foobar strut bearings. I ordered some SKF ones from DBC and hope that they come soon... but until then I am still uneasy (duh, this car is my life) and can't stop obsessively thinking about it. Now I am beginning to doubt that it is the strut bearings because most people seem to only have the noise issue when turning their wheels. I have the noise issue all of the time, except when I am driving on the freeway.

The hatch rattle has been driving me nuts. I'd heard that the bumpers on either side of the hatch could be adjusted to fix this problem. I couldn't find a good howto on this, so I snapped a few pics.
Basically, if you adjust these bumpers so that they apply slight tension on the hatch when closed, it appears to stop the rattles that happen over low speed bumps. It's been a couple days, some pretty bumpy roads, and no rattles since the weekend. [IMG] [URL] ......
Tools Required
- One 3mm hex driver
- Two hands (one would probably do)
1) Open the rear hatch and note the bumpers on either side:
2) Note the 3mm socket in the center of each bumper, deep inside:
3) Insert 3mm hex driver into the socket, loosen (but do not remove) the screw:
4) Wiggle the bumper out -- I moved mine out about 0.5" or so. Retighten screw.
5) Close the hatch to test fit. The rubber bumper should be SLIGHTLY compressed against the stopper, but not mashed up against it:
6) Go take a drive. Tell the wife/husband/other that you need to test for rattles. Spend a few hours driving fast, just to be super sure.

I notice the door rattles a lot now, more noticeably over bumps. Also, I don't really turn my music that loud, but when it is I can hear the rattle as well. Any quick fixs for this? Or would it be easier to get the dealer to try to fix this during my 5000 mile maintenance?

Yesterday, the dealer performed the 20K service on my '11 GTI. A bit later in the day, I noticed that every time I turned left or right I could hear something rolling/rattling back and forth in the dashboard/cowl area. It's audibly going quite far, almost from one side of the car clear to the other. At first I thought it was on top of the dash, but there was nothing there. It's clearly coming from inside someplace, and I never heard it before the service. My guess is that something came loose when they changed the cabin air filter.
I called the dealership, and after blowing some smoke about my possibly having parked under an oak tree, they said to bring it back in, which I can't do until tomorrow.

The button on my e-brake handle rattles when driving, just the button, like there could be foam or something put behind the button on the inside of the assembly.
The previous owner had a paper clip jammed under the handle, but it made the parking brake application useless unless you pulled the clip out when you want to lock the brake into place, and then put the clip back in to get rid of the rattle, this was possible, but got aggravating, I just want to get in and drive, not mess with the parking brake constantly.

With 132k on the clock, motor has shutters at idle and rattles under acceleration even though seems pull smoothly otherwise - if that makes sense. Anyway, changed plugs and coil packs all without any results. No codes either from the computer. Shop thinks it could be a timing chain tensioner but after spending as much as I have to this point, can't really afford to just start trying things.

The past couple days when driving to school in the morning i've been noticing that my car starts to rattle and struggles to accelerate once I pull out of my driveway. Once i get to the next stop sign to take off the car runs fine like nothing ever happened. My check engine light doesn't come on though. I usually let the car sit for about 30 seconds to a minute before i start to move the car. Mods I have are Unitronic stage 2, Forge 007p DV with yellow spring, and 3" downpipe.

I am on my 3rd GTI, a 2013 GTI Autobahn, came out of 2011 GTI Sunroof/conv model. I have various rattling noises in this car. The sunglasses holder rattles all the time especially when i am listening to music with a little bass, the roof rattles a bit but that seems to go away if i close the sunroof shade, also my front passenger door rattles.

What would make a clutch switch keep going out? I've replaced it 3 times in the past year and at this point I'm pretty sure it's not bad switches. I currently have a UM NA tune with launch control which obviously doesn't work when the switch goes bad.

Just bought my first r 32 recently , had previously owned a 20th anniversary GTI, anyway guy i bought the car from mentioned the awd system was not working , recently was driving and clutch would not go into gear in addition to the haldex or awd not functioning . The clutch also kinda "stuck" to the floor .. Also I noticed some fluid on the undercarriage the day I brought it home . I'm pretty sure the car was beat on but there aren't many available up this way , and honestly I know I'm prob gonna spend some to get her road worthy again , Also felt like the car was operating in rwd for some reason and traction control light is on.

Since taking delivery I noticed right away that the clutch was too low (almost to the floor to engage). How do I go about adjusting the height a little higher?
