I just got a new Golf TDI. I have about 500 miles on it so far. I recently went over a speed bump in the road and the car made an awful clunk sound sort of like the strut reached the end of its length reach. The car continued to make this klunk sound when I'd go over smaller bumps just not as loud. What this could be and how to remedy it?

View 11 RepliesEver since i bought my .:R (3weeks ago) there has been this 'squeak' or 'chirp' sound whenever i hit a bump or rough road. Car only has 22k miles on it so this is way too early for any noises to be coming up. I've spoken to a few friends and they think it might be the bushings or my suspension was installed incorrectly. What it may be?
View 20 RepliesMy 2012 Elantra with 10,000 km sounded like the rear suspension was bottoming out with a loud clunk whenever I went over a bad bump or heave in the road. It was the right rear shock, which was replaced under warranty. The car handled well so it wasn't as if the damping had disappeared. About 500 km later the left rear shock had to be replaced under warranty as the loud clunking as if the suspension was bottoming out returned. I'm not sure of the shock manufacturer Hyundai is using, but they obviously had/have a quality control problem or the shocks just aren't up to the job. I live in the country and drive a lot of secondary roads, but have never had shocks go like this before. Something in the internal hydraulic value circuit is going wrong.
View 1829 RepliesMy wife and I bought a 2014 Elantra with 30,000 miles on it. This is our first Hyundai and the car runs great, but the only issue I have is that whenever I go over a large bump in the road, the front suspension clunks and feels like it's coming apart. Smaller bumps or imperfections in the road are okay and the car runs smoothly over those, but the larger bumps and potholes produce an unreassuring clunk.
We've never owned a Hyundai before and we really like the car, but I was wondering if this is normal for the Elantra and if others experience this. I brought the car to the dealer and they checked everything out. They said all was fine and that it was normal. Is it?
I get an audible clunk/thud noise when I go over a dip or bump in the road. The sound only comes from the passenger side front wheel and only happens once when the car is cold. It almost sounds like a strut mount or something. I've just been living with it but recently the noise has happened when the car is warmed up. The driver side front does not make this sound. It is not the ABS self check noise that some people hear.

My problem I just noticed today in FL, 61 degrees out, is when I go over speed bumps my fronts make the very wet shock compression sound of KW v3's and then i hit my rears, going about 5mph and I hear a squeak sound. Now this sound is a problem sound, it sounds like somethings getting torqued or a rubber strut is moving or something, I can't really describe it. I hope it's not the shock gone bad!
I took the car into the dealership to check an odd noise that comes from the front of the car every time I pass over speed bump or road holes.
They say I have to replace the steering rack. Can it be fixed or have to be changed anyway?

View 3 RepliesSo I driving home from an day trip in rural OK today and while driving on an unfamiliar road I hit a bump (or to be more accurate two bumps). Now I'm not going to lie my butt did leave the seat however my car did not bottom out and I didn't see it as all that major of an event. However I stop at the next stop sign and turn the corner and I hear something clunk out from the bottom of the car so I stop and pick it up.
This is what I found in the road. I look it oversee "hella" on it and realize its from my headlights, shrug my shoulders and drive home. Once I get home i open the hood and this greets me

The only thing that kept this one from falling out is a lack of a hole.
Should I be treating this as a fluke and just put them back on? Maybe someone in the factory didn't tighten them enough? Or should I take the car to the dealer as is and mention it?
Towing with my 07 F150. I now have a noise all of a sudden. I worry that is the rear end going out. As I accelerate normal from a stop, I , for one feel bump-clunk sensation, as if I have a bad u joint. 2nd I now have a "whip whip whip" whirring sound, sound character speeds up as I speed up.
I hope the sound is the brakes, because I know they are getting down to the end of their life.
It's the front right wheel side that does it. I even removed all my mounts (trans, engine and dogbone)and inspected them and are in good condition. I went under the car inspected all the bushings like in the subframe and everywhere I could find one and they all look great.
What it does is if I hit little bump or even uneven ground the right side is like clunk clunk. Pretty much anytime the tire travels from up to down it feels like it slams down really hard.
It's really frustrating since I can't find the problem. Visually everything looks amazing. I am thinking could it be the mount/bushing on top of the strut. It visually looks good but I don't know anymore. I got KW V1...
Just did pretty much the whole front end suspension on my GTI. struts, bearings, mounts. control arm bushings. ball joints, tie rod ends. sway bar bushings and end links. Drove across the country and a clunk showed up. (most recent work was sway bar links and bushings).
I get a pretty hard clunk, usually when the right side goes over a bump (not always), and sometimes when the whole front end goes over a bump. Sounds like it is coming from the right side. You can feel it in the floor sometimes.
I went to the metal end links, maybe they are no good? I figure it's either them, or the axle on that side is binding sometimes. Boot on axle is fine though.
I've had my 2002 Golf GLS for about a year now. It has 127k on it and I absolutely love it! Saves a lot on fuel driving 100 miles a day for work compared to my Ram 2500 diesel!
Anyway, lately ive been hearing what I can best describe as a "clunk" or maybe the sound of metal hitting metal when I go over a bump. From what I can tell it sounds like its coming from the front passenger side. Maybe the rubber grommit on the strut tower is gone? I havent really checked it out becasue I havent had much time on my hands lately.
Also, ever since I have had the car the engine seems to run louder than what I expected for a VW. It has the 2.0 engine in it. Is this normal? It kinda hard to explain how its running loud but when its at idle and I have the hood up it just doesnt seem as quiet as I thought a VW motor would sound.
While driving my daughter home from daycare yesterday I went over a speed bump in the park and immediately noticed a dragging feeling / sound.
After some inspection, I determined that either my spring broke or the spring broke free from its mount on the strut and was now rubbing the back of my tire.
Anyway, I've heard of the springs breaking on these cars, and I need new struts anyway, and it's older to begin with, so I set about ordering a complete strut / spring replacement for the front.
On 1aauto I found this set, part number 1ASSP00874. They seem dodgy about whether this part is intended for the Outback as well as the Legacy. I can find sites that sell parts that claim to fit one or the other or both. In this case they seem to claim both.
I know the Outback trim was slightly raised from the regular Legacy, but I can't find any other parts.
So, I have a clunk that sounds like it's coming from the rear end, almost more of a knocking sound. It sounds to me like the driver's rear, but only hearing it in the driver's seat probably distorts my perception. The sound only occurs over bumps or uneven areas in the road. I've played with the end-links and they seem fine. I can't find anything visually obvious.

View 5 RepliesMy 2010 SF has 36000 km and I've noticed a "crunching" type sound every time I go over a steep ramp or a speed bump. The sound comes from the rear and never happens on smooth road. I took the car in for service last week and the dealership has ordered two rear replacement shocks -- they say it's premature failure.
View 16 RepliesMy car has developed a strange squeak from the front suspension when going over large bumps or speed bumps. Most of the time it only happens when i hit a speed bump with both tires hitting at the same time. It is a slow squeak not very high pitched but shouldn't be happening on a car with stock suspension components and less than 12,000 miles.
Why my car would be doing this, under normal driving conditions i don't hear any sounds. Its just when i go over speed bumps and large bumps on the road. It is also only from the front suspension.
So I changed my fuel filter a while back and I've been noticing a very mild knocking sound whenever I go over a bump. I didn't have access to a lift when I was doing this, so I attempted it with the car on the ground (worst idea ever - there wasn't enough ground clearance for me to even fit my head under there...). Everything is hooked back up as I thought it was originally (car runs fine), but now that I think about it I'm wondering if there's a bracket above the filter that should be secured within the hose clamp, along with the filter & the plastic piece that attaches to the filter. And if so, any tricks as to how I can secure the hose clamp to the bracket without having to remove the filter all over again? I had no way of telling whether or not there was a bracket... I could hardly see as it was and was more concerned about not damaging the fuel line clips.
