Golf/GTI VI :: Brakes Engaging In Reverse
Dec 8, 2010
I replaced my rear pads on Sunday and the car drives and brakes great. This morning I noticed when I backed into my parking spot at work that the brakes were engaging to the point where I was on a small incline and the car didn't roll at all when I let off the brake pedal.
This was my first time doing the rear pads on my MKVI and my first time doing brakes on a VW. Is there some extra step required that I'm missing? I know the piston was a PITA, definitely not used to having to turn a piston while compressing.

I've noticed an intermittent clunk which occurs when engaging the hydraulics brakes during reverse maneuvers. It happens with anything from very light to very heavy brake force and typically will happen before driving very far (backing out of driveway, out of parking spot, etc) but does not happen after driving (backing INTO driveway or parking spot). This has been occurring for a while now with no other symptoms (other than some shudder during take off which I attribute to a sloppy transmission bushing).
Front brakes were in great shape when I r&r them a while back to turn the rotors, didn't pull the rears apart but they look good, and I don't have any brake vibrations or issues when moving forward. I can't rule out a driveline clunk or suspension clunk either but the u-joints don't have any slop in them and no squirrely handling issues either.

I have a 2015 with 10k miles on it and every once and a while, when I come to a complete stop and shift into reverse, I take my foot off of the brake pedal and the car will sit there for up to 5 seconds. Then, it kicks in and starts rolling backwards. This has happened 6 times now. Giving it gas doesn't seem to work along. I took it to the dealer today for it's 10k service, and they cannot find anything wrong with it. There are no codes in the computer, the fluid is where it should be, and they think the Neuspeed Power Module has something to do with it. I told them it happened before I installed that piece. I can assure you I am not racing in reverse.

I am having a problem with my MKIV, @ 182k. I think problem first arose a couple months ago when reverse began not engaging on cold starts, so I would have to sit there 5-10 minutes waiting for car to 'warm up' enough for reverse to engage. This led me to taking it to a local tranny shop who I asked to change fluid only, which they did. Problem persisted however, but forward driving was noticeably much smoother. If that matters. I gave up on it, since I knew it was only reverse messing up, and started parking in reverse overnight etc.
Simultaneously I had a code for P0420/P0411 (the SAI incorrect flow crap which causes catalyst inefficiency) so I went ahead and swapped out the cracked SAI plastic hose leading to stock airbox, after doing so I reset the CEL and ran the car. And it ran like crap, I think it was in limp mode (i had never experienced this in my Jetta) from what Ive read, but not sure. So, I pulled to the side, and restarted car, let it sit, same problem. Finally, after 3-4 cycles it threw a CEL, which ironically FIXED the problem. It ran fine from then on. Made it home, hooked up scanner and CEL code was P0732, which I read elsewhere is a 'Gear 2 - Incorrect Ratio' meaning 2nd gear is messed up somehow.
So, overnight I reset CEL and today in the morning I let it idle for 10 minutes before taking off, immediately same issue, where car will not accelerate/ change gears it seems. Went back straight home, waited for CEL to display, and VOILA, runs fine again. Same code P0732. Running fine as of writing this. Problem only arose after taking a swing at SAI code and reset of CEL's. Once CEL lights up its fine.

2011 GTI (65k miles). Selective brakes intermittently engaging when grip is adequate. Only happens at speed (>50 mph) when turning, most often with change in pitch (uphill/downhill). Traction light flashes. Happens when ESP on or off, wet or dry. Plenty of tread on (snow) tires. Mild bearing noise has persisted for >20k miles. Two dealers and one third-party shop couldn't find anything wrong, including with bearings. No stored faults.
My suspicion: slow (non-critical) bearing failure causing bad ABS sensor signal/fault, causing ABS/ESP engagement, especially with change in pitch. Related but simpler: ABS sensor failure or bad connection. Pulling fuses?

I've started noticing this only when she's cold and I have to back out of the garage in the morning. I generally wait 5-10 seconds after I start the engine before going into reverse but lately I've noticed a muffled metallic 'pank' coming from the engine compartment when the reverse gear engages. I can't say I feel any 'thump' to go with it and I'm racking my brain to see if this is a new development and I have a possible transmission issue or if it's been there all along and I never noticed.

In today's show, a caller with a Ferrari noted that sometimes the transmission would crunch when engaging reverse. I've never had the pleasure of driving a Ferrari, but two Porsches I owned (in my single days) had similar issues. There is no synchro for reverse gear.(Ferarri may be the same) So if I idled in neutral to get the gears moving and then shifted to reverse quickly, the gears would crunch as they meshed. A little drag from the clutch not disengaging completely or the pilot bearing dragging would make it worse. Two solutions are
1)let the transmission coast down by holding the clutch in for a few seconds before engaging reverse, or
2) shift to second, then straight to reverse.

2010 Prius 52K miles... Not engaging in Drive or Reverse, Engine is not starting either. Got Message - Put in park , All the lights are ON , in the Dash .

When I reverse (and wait 3 seconds just to ensure the gears are engaged), on occasion I feel a stutter/kick.
To offset it, I will tap the pedal when reversing so its not continuous. What this could be?

So I took my car in last Tues (Jan 15) to get an oil change. I mentioned that whenever I let off the gas and let the car decelerate without engaging the brakes I hear an odd noise. The noise is more pronounced at lower gears, but there were no special conditions that I wouldn't hear it. After a couple of hours, they tell me that my catalytic converter needs to be replaced, something about it being loose.

Just recently, my '93 transport 3800 has started making weird sounds when engaging transmission , forward...and specially reverse. This is not a transmission problem. It sounds like there is increased torsional movement of the engine/transmission unit and it made me take a look at the engine while would shift in drive and reverse....it does lean much..impressive ..but in fact I do not remember having tried looking for that before...so I cannot compare.

The brakes on my 2007 LaCrosse do not feel like they are engaging when I am reversing and the car is cold (first thing in the morning or first thing after work). The pedal feels very stiff/hard and the car doesn't feel like the brakes are stopping it. Every time I apply the brakes after that first time, they behave fine. I had the front brakes repaired/replaced but the problem persists.

I have a 1984 Ford F150, has about 110,000 miles on it, been a outstanding vehicle. Recently, after I drive if for about 15 minutes, the vehicle feels like it's dragging something, like the brakes are slowing and steadily engaging without depressing them. And, along with this, a chemical odor is present. And if it is the master cylinder, does it make sense to repair considering the age of the vehicle and worth?

I have had this happen the last couple times I use my car in the cold. It has been around 25-30 F and when I pull out of my driveway the first time/maybe second time I touch the brakes it forcefully stops and feels as though only the front brakes are engaging. As I drive the car that trip it has yet to happen and the brakes preform normally. I am not used to disk brakes and I am thinking it is maybe that? The only other thing I could think of is that the brakes need to warm up a bit and pressing them still cold illicit that jerked response. I have read through a number of threads on brakes and I cannot seem to find this happening.

I have a 2008 F-150. When moving gear selector from park to either reverse or drive, trans has a delay engaging. After engagement, it runs fine, shifts ok, downshifts ok....

I recently had my wheel hub and bearing replaced. The mechanic said I might hear a little noise with the brakes but they'd work. Turns out that noise is the Anti-lock braking system engaging every time I use the brakes. It happens when the car speed gets low, maybe 5-15 mph. Also, if I'm driving slow in a parking lot or something, and let off the gas, that change in speed sets the ABS system on too, without my foot being on the brake pedal.
I've also noticed sometimes when the weather is very cold, the ABS light will go on and the ABS brakes won't work; just regular brakes. Is this something that I'd be able to solve at home? Could I possibly bleed the brake lines to check for any air ( although braking seems fine ) , busted fuse for the system, anything else to check before asking the mechanic?

So I noticed that my R32 is not engaging AWD at all. I can light up the front tires pretty good. I scanned the car on a VAG-COM and got one code under Haldex: 01155 - Clutch 04-10 Mechanicsl Malfunction - intermittant. What would cause this code? Now I've done some quick research and saw it mentioned that a bad e-brake or brake switch, aftermarket tail lights/wiring. I do have a euro switch/headlights/taillights with the rear fog wired up to work. I'm going to put it on a lift in a couple days to start checking stuff out. I just got the car a few days ago and would really like to get this sorted out before my first autocross event on the 17th.

The last time I drove my .:R, I was noticing something weird when I'd downshift from 6th to 5th. Usually when I'm around 40mph. If I'd downshift, then press the gas a little to accelerate a little, it would take a moment, almost feeling like lag before it would engage. It's kind of hard to explain. I was wondering if this had anything to do with some linkage problems maybe? I was trying to think of other problems, but I'm not too sure what else it could be.

I got a 99' Jetta gls 5 spd. I just replaced the transmission and now the car won't engage reverse from inside the cockpit. Reverse can be engage from inside the engine bay, but when the shift knob is depressed nothing happens. Linkag cables are in the correct spots.

My mother In law's a/c is not working. Last year I replaced the compressor, fcm, and pressure sensor and nothing. Well fast forward a year and I'm here again trying to sort it out. I unplugged the connector to the compressor and there is 2 black wires 1 wire has 6 volts (not 12v) and the others reads nothing. When I turn the A/C on the fans do come on.

Driving home yesterday and the ac wouldnt come on my 2003 golf. Worked fine day before. All fuses are fine. Small fan works but large one needs to be replaced but its been that way. Ac button works fine too. What else would cause the clutch to not engage? I believe the pressure is fine as it worked fine the day before.
