Golf/GTI VI :: 2011 - How To Reduce Noise
Dec 14, 2010
I test drove a 2011 GTI today with my dad as a possible car to buy once I graduate college. The interior was very Audi-esque and overall it was very balanced and enjoyable to drive.
The one downside (and possibly the single reason I might not buy this otherwise excellent car) was the drone it makes whenever you get on the throttle. If it pushed you back in your seat I might not mind (I understand the point of the GTI is more sensible rather than rocketship fun), but it just seems like it's making a whole lot of noise and not really going anywhere.
Is there a way to reduce this noise, short of sound dampening the entire car? I really like everything else about the car, but I couldn't imagine a long highway drive or being out with a girl and everytime you want to pass or accelerate it sounds like you're taking it to 8,500 rpm.

How can I reduce the road noise I get on Mazda MPV? My dad once put a layer of extra carpeting on the floor and firewall of an old Metropolitan with remarkable results. Would that work for a minivan? Should I just use some left over carpet?

2011, GTI MKVI, 36000 Miles. A whirring noise began to occur at about 33,000. I took it into a dealership. They concluded that it was tire noise. So I lived with it for a little while, then replaced all 4 tires with Nitto Motivo (so not an overly aggressive tread). Got the car out on the highway and I'm getting the same noise. Took it in to another dealership, they thought tire noise, but I had informed them that all 4 tires were replaced two days before. Now they are scratching their heads. When I brake between the speeds that the noise occurs I get a slight vibration in the brake pedal. You can feel it in the floor boards, but not in the steering wheel. The noise is coming from the front passenger side.
Fortunately I took it in before exceeding 36k miles, so they kept the ticket open until this is solved. I have read in other threads that people have had similar problems, but they generally have gone away after replacing tires. Could it be a wheel bearing?

Just recently I've noticed my car making a whining noise. I have a 2011w/ DSG, Stage 2 APR w/ DP and K&N Filter. I've researched some cases of the whine coming from intake but using just the K&N I doubt it's that. Plus the noise just started recently and the filter was put on 4k ago. I read somewhere that it's a leak in the exhaust??? What it could be?

I have noticed that when I have my ac on, I can hear the turbo spool and release noise (pshh sound) more prominently. I drive a 2011 GTI MT. Car is bone stock.
I was just curious to see if this is normal or indicative of a boost leak? If it was a boost leak, would there be a CEL?

Ever since day 1, I noticed my wife's 2011 TDI/DSG make clattering/rattling noise during low gear changes (1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd gear), it sounded like a diesel engine's clattering/clicking but a little louder at gear changes. I mentioned it to the dealer at 3month/3k checkup and they test drove and say it's normal. Is it really normal?

I have an 11 GTI, got it about a month ago new. I noticed ever since I first drove it, when the tires are cold, and I maneuver in slow speeds, I hear a sort of rubbing noise over pavement. It almost sounds like when you drive a car slowly on an inside floor, like on a dealer's showroom - is it normal for them to do this? PSI is at the recommended levels, nothing seems to be rubbing. I think when the tires warm up the noise goes away, and especially at higher speeds it is not there.

My 2010 GTI, which I bought in April of this year, has begun to rattle, mainly coming from the back part of the vehicle. I have taken it twice to the local dealer and of course this rattle mytsteriously goes away when they take it out on a road test.
One rattle area seems to be coming from the sunglass holder (sidenote: why the hell would they design them so bloody small? I mean, they barely hold any kind of sunglasses), but the main rattle is definitely coming from the back, possibly trunk area.
This is my first VW and I have been told the nature of a VW in the winter is that it rattles.

When I close the passenger door with the window down the glass of the window makes a noise like it is hitting metal. The noise is the loudest when the window is all the way down and becomes less loud gradually the further the window is up when the door is closed. It does not make the noise at all when the window is all the way up.
Found a few websites that illustrates how to remove the door panel but that seems to give you access to the window motor not the window itself.

The car is a 2011 GTI 2dr w/6 speed, 12,000miles, cat back exhaust and that's it. Recently when I get into my car in the morning when it is cold (social not that cold) and either put it in reverse or just take off from first the clutch makes a really loud whining noise. Generally, it will go away after a few minutes but sometimes it doesn't go away even after the car is warmed up.
The thing that is weird to me is the clutch isn't slipping at all, even on a hard pull. I know that VW's clutches don't have reputation for lasting that long but I would be pissed if they said it was my fault seeing I drive it nice 9 times out of 10. On another note, I had my leaking water pump replaced a couple weeks ago, ever since then after the car warms up something is making a loud noise that sounds exactly like when your ears are ringing. I popped the hood and it sounds like it coming from the rear of the engine bay but its really to hard to pinpoint exactly where.

2010 wagon is doing great as my daily commuter and a long distance hauler for my wife and two kids on weekends, but I'd love to cut down on the floatiness and fore-aft body motion over swells. I put Bilstein HDs and a rear stabilizer bar (really a torsion beam stiffener) on my old 2000 wagon and left the springs stock after I'd read on these boards the idea that the B5 was under-dampened, and though the changes were big improvement and good compromise. People seem to like to touring cup kit, but I don't particularly want to drop the car and would like to preserve as much of the ride quality as possible.

I have a 2001 Civic LX; I would like the clutch pedal travel distance to be far less than it is.
As in most manual cars, I find that the clutch pedal travel is mostly useless. That is, once the clutch is fully engaged, the pedal still has a goodly way to go before it hits the stop. On pedal depression the inverse is true. As modern hydraulic clutches are self-adjusting, this once-necessary extra distance is pointless.
(I would rather clutch with my ankle than my whole leg. If I could cut the pedal travel in half (or more), I would like that very much.) Is this possible? How would I do such a thing?

How to reduce some of the sponginess in a brake pedal? I've already checked my brake fluid level, am positive there is no air in any of the lines. Looking for fixes to solve my issue of having to put my brake pedal to the floor before the pads start to grab the disc?

Seems like I read something on this site about being able to adjust the air suspension software. I'd like to see if I could reduce the body lean a bit more than the current "sport mode".
