So, I have discovered my first rattle in my GTI (8500 miles). Seems to be from the underside, sounds like a heat shield rattling, certainly sounds metallic. Did some spirited driving yesterday and hear the rattle today. Any target areas to check when I take a look under it?
View 6 RepliesI have a major rattling sound from under my car... it sounds exactly like a heat shield. I have been up under my car 5 times and I can not find a loose shield anywhere. the cat insulator mesh is still in perfect condition and it now seems the sounds is coming from somewhere in the back of the car, perhaps the muffler area.
This car does have the flapper mod done... could there be something inside the muffler itself? the car only has 40k on the ODO and I have not hit anything or do not have a dented muffler. As a fellow VW'er I do not want to be the only one running around town rattling...
Looking for a cure for a heat shield that continually loosens, and causes a annoying rattle? I have been up under the car and re-tightened the suspected shield a couple times, the screw that holds the clip is not damaged, and the clip itself is not damaged... and on top of it all, I can never quite get that clip on tight enough to stop the rattle all together. is there a tool to get it tighter? i use micro needle nose pliers that fit and tighten it that way.
View 24 RepliesI drive my golf maybe 180-250Km everyday, and there are countless areas where something could occur but for about a month now I am hearing a strange sound coming from where I suppose the suspension would be, (I don't know for sure because I am in the car when I hear it) but its happening when i go over speed bumps, even going less than 10kph.... and when ever i hit a crappy road with a lot of potholes and bumps. it sounds like a scraping noise of like maybe the shock absorber or something along those lines. I would go to VW but the dealer in my area likes to void warranties, and is very difficult in giving away things for free/cheap. it getting consistently louder and is starting to worry me. should i be worried or is it a simple fix?
View 3 RepliesI have a 42 DD tb exhaust. And so far I've used a 3" exhaust clamp over the last hanger (after the muffler) which raised the exhaust all the way up against the heatshield, eliminating the rattle over the rear axle beam. But the exhaust was rattling against the heatshield.
So I bought 15 ft of exhaust wrap and wrapped the section that comes in contact with the heatshield. It worked a bit but it still rattles a little! I hate this rattling! How to get rid of the rattling? Should I just use more exhaust wrap?
Got a rattle from the car, I think it's the catalytic converter heat shield. Looking for any pictures of what it looks like? I don't know if it is a full cover on our Toyota's, or a half cover. I will post a picture of what mine looks like now that it is rattling later today. Hoping it's an easy fix.
2009 Corolla CE 1.8L.
My 99 Jetta is rattling. The noise comes from the front center of the underside of the car. It started out only when I was accelerating and would disappear when in neutral or after reaching 40mph. Now its when its idling and driving at any speeds under 40mph (I think it just gets drowned out above that speed). I looked under the car and saw that there might be a piece causing the noise but I can't figure out what it is. It seems to be in-line with the exhaust system and its a metal, cylinder looking piece that has uniform holes in it. I'm just trying to figure out what is causing the noise, if I can fix it easily or if this is going to be a pretty expensive fix. (It has 165k miles on it, is a 2.1 gas engine with the new body type).

View 14 RepliesOrdered my TBE couple of weeks ago, installed last week. I have been running the 100 octane tune for an entire week. Decided a couple of days ago to put it back to stock to see the difference. When I was running the 100 oct, I was pretty much on it the whole time. When I went back to stock I noticed some heat shield noise so I took it back to have them take a look. While on the lift I noticed a lot of soot in three different places.

Is there a more simple answer that it could be? Keep in mind I claim very very little mechanical knowledge.
I am going to my dealer tomorrow for something unrelated and I kinda want to get a head start when I go to talk to the service dudes.
I can't recall whos makes them. What are our options? I have the VMR intake if that matters.
View 16 RepliesI have a CTS Turbo intake and have recently purchased a heatshield. It did not come with instructions. I tried installing it this weekend and it was a no go. I'm assuming the pieces for the factory engine cover in the rear is what the heatshield needs to replace to bolt on. I couldn't get those off for the life of me.

For the past week or so, I've been noticing a hissing sound coming from underneath the car near the front driver side area.
It almost sounds like air being let out of a tire. It only happens when the car is turned on, and the sound is there when the car is in park or in gear.
Not noticing any change when driving the car.
The catalytic converter shield is tack welded on the front end but free on the rear end. There was originally some braided wire packing at the rear to keep the shield from rattling against the pipes. Mine was deteriorated and had been damaged, I think, when I sustained some oil pan damage last summer -- big jolt to the system when running over a muffler on the highway.
The fix is simple. Bought a foot of 3/16" braided stainless steel cable. I used about 8 inches and layed in the lower bead line on the catalytic converter shield (see picture below). You can see a bit of the cable thru the gap in the upper/lower shield on the left side. (1/4" cable would be a better fit, but this will work for a long time.) Cost: $1.84
The local VW parts man dug out an exploded drawing of the system but it showed NO parts or packing for this problem.
I am very mechanically inclined and up until now I can usually hear a noise and know exactly what the problem is, given enough time to listen..
The best I can describe the noise I am hearing, sounds like a cross between heat shield rattle or a syncro somehow stretched out and is loosely spinning around once in gear.. Hard to explain, but all gears shift perfectly..clutch was replaced at 102K and I am currently at 130K. Also I might be crazy but it sounds like I am starting to hear the noise in 3rd as well. I would post a sound clip, but its so faint it doesn't show up on my iphone..
The reason I am throwing it out there, is because half of the seriously trusted mechanics I know say it sounds like a bearing in the tranny going out, the other half, (3 of 6) can't even hear what I am talking about but its there.
I have a 2011 RX350 and recently noticed rattling sound coming from inside the glove compartment.
I think it comes from the plastic cover of the aircon filter at the back of the glove compartment. This cover seems bit loose even when installed back properly and the vibration (especially when driving over uneven roads) is causing the rattling sound.
I know it's a minor problem but the rattling sound can get irritating at times. My temporary fix is to push back the heavy owner's manual on that cover to prevent vibration.
Yesterday morning taking off out of my driveway I heard a ticking sound. Kinda metal on metal sounding. It sounds like middle of truck underside. Only on acceleration. It does also clunk at times or ping when I put it in gear.is this u joints? Hopefully not rear end. Its a 2000 limited ex. with the v10.
View 7 RepliesI got a heat shield that just will not stop causing me grief. When I installed the headers and pipes I had a heat shield that was too close to the passenger side pipes. I bent it down some to clear the pipe and got rid of a nasty metallic sound I had on the throttle and making left hand turns. Well that little sound returned last week and I crawled under and looked and sure enough the heat shield was touching again.
Who knows why maybe a bit a spring sag. So yesterday I bent it down a little more. Today I start getting a nasty clunk on dips and especially when on a bump why turning. I crawl under there too look and find the same heat shield now has a huge gouge on the under side of it where the leaf spring near the rear bushing is smacking it. I'm sure Ford put it there for a good reason so hate to remove it.

17524 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating; B1 S1
P1116 - 000 - Open Circuit
The O2 sensor wire disappears above the heat shield above the exhaust. I am used to (Audi 1.8T, 2.7T, 2.8) seeing the O2 sensors coming up with plug on firewall.
Where is the O2 sensor wire going to.
I normally by the generic Bosch O2 if the SENSOR is bad (cut and splice), but suspect that maybe the problem (open circuit) is further 'upstream'.
Obviously, I am a TDI (and Golf/transverse engine) newbie, so bear with me.
I just had a new downpipe installed and now I am getting a horrible scrapping noise when coming off a dead stop. I got under the car and looks like the downpipe is touching subframe heat shield. My question is should i take it back and have them make some clearance or is there a quicker solution. New downpipe and subframe heat shield.
View 2 RepliesMy 2010 GTI, which I bought in April of this year, has begun to rattle, mainly coming from the back part of the vehicle. I have taken it twice to the local dealer and of course this rattle mytsteriously goes away when they take it out on a road test.
One rattle area seems to be coming from the sunglass holder (sidenote: why the hell would they design them so bloody small? I mean, they barely hold any kind of sunglasses), but the main rattle is definitely coming from the back, possibly trunk area.
This is my first VW and I have been told the nature of a VW in the winter is that it rattles.
