Gen 3 Prius (Audio/Electronics) :: Navigation System - How Does GPS Get Traffic Info
Jul 1, 2013
After a long trip this past weekend, I'm curious how the navigation system gets its traffic info. I received several traffic alerts (that were all cleared by the time I got to them).

Is it normal for a clicking and ticking noise to constantly originate from the JBL audio navigation system? I've noticed this noise while the vehicle is in electric mode at a full stop. The noise is also present while driving.
I checked the 4 disc cd changer and they are empty. I usually use the blue tooth system to play the music.

I can't figure out how to mute the navigation system. I found the volume control, but it doesn't have a silent option. How to do this?

Is there a way to use the navigation system when you are driving instead of having to stop to key in information?

I have a 2005 Prius the navigation system stopped working. When I press the Map button, the screen displays "the external system is not connected" also the voice came on and said voice recognition is off. Could it be a fuse or need to reset? It was working fine then just went black. I restarted the car a few times but still no work. Also where is the player at on the 05?

I recently posted that I was purchasing a low mileage 2007 Gen2 and had been told it was a base model. Actually, the seller was clueless about the options and had only had it for 3 years. Didn't know what a "Package/Type" was.
Before I got out of the driveway I discovered it did have the backup camera. However, as I began reading through the owners manual (my first operational Gen2, with a manual) and programming the radio and a few other features, I discovered that this was a Type 1 with backup camera. But soon discovered from the display and steering wheel that it lacked the Blue Tooth and Hands-Free ability. Something I have been wanting. I could live without the Nav System since I have a good system on my tablet that I take with me from vehicle to vehicle. Not sure how good the Gen2 Nav System is but have used it on my sons 2010 Gen3. Seemed ok but I'm hearing that you have to subscribe to the Nav software or is that just for updates?? Or is it just a couple CDs that I need to find??
Now that I have learned a little more about these systems, I looked at the two other Project Gen2s that I have and discover that a 2007 tired old (300k+ miles) Yellow Cab has both Nav and Bluetooth.
So, the obvious question is, are these Gen2s all prewired for the Nav System and Bluetooth and aside from the transfer of the Nav ECU from one vehicle to the other.

In June my Grandfather picked up a used 2010 Prius (not exactly sure what trim package it is? I think it's IV? It has heated front seats, voice activation, bluetooth, navigation, XM radio, NO sunroof though)
He honestly doesn't like the car that much, I don't think he knew about the "PWR" button that would make the gas pedal behave more like a standard throttle, but he is away on a trip right now so I am borrowing the car. I love it, and I'm going to show him the "PWR" mode when he gets back and see if that changes his opinion of the car.
ANYWAY I noticed when driving it that pressing the MAP button doesn't actually make the map display and instead changes the radio station? I did some searching and found that this may actually be a known flaw although from my searching it doesn't look like Toyota has addressed this?
I'm guessing the car is probably out of the original manufacturers warranty? Not sure if there might have been some sort of warranty from when he purchased the car pre-owned? I definitely plan to talk to him about this when he gets back because it is very annoying to not be able to switch back to the map easily. The only ways I have figured out to work around this is use the voice activation and say "show map" or to press the "DEST" button, choose a destination, and then delete that destination and then it shows the map.

I pretty much have my car all setup now, but one thing that I have not been able to do is receive text messages to where it will display on the in dash screen. I have the Solar Package / Premium Navigation system. As for my Phone, I have the Galaxy Note II with Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) and AT&T. My phone still receives texts while connected to the car's blue tooth, and I can view on my phone, but I'm unable to view on the in dash display, which means I can't send out the quick replies either. Is there something in the phone that I need to set up?

I have a base 2006 with CD only. I bought a OEM mid-line non-jbl mp3 prius radio (manufactured 2005) from junkyard and put it in. Initially there was the red triangle with excalamation and mfd dispalayed "red car with "problem" in it (since I disconnected park button). That issue fixed itself after couple of restarts.

I have all functions turned on inside menu options. I have Sirius xm subscription and they told me it's not a service they provide for Lexus. So I'm thinking its a service from Lexus, is this true ?

Just got a new 2012 Prius II today. Got in the car with my iPod "splitter" cable adapter (on one end it has the ipod connector and on the other end is the USB & Auxillary cables), my 6th gen ipod nano, and hooked it up only to find that the Audio info was not connecting to the screen. I found that you do not need this "splitter" cable, all you need is your ipod adapter. You can use the that auxillary cable for a Walkman or something ! Glad, I figured it out the first day or i'd be pissed trying.

I have a 2010 Prius five and I blew the warranty in the first year and a half. At 134k miles the navigation is getting a bit crazy. So while I'm driving (not using the nav) a side bar screen will pop up with a few boxes that say calculating and it will freeze my whole system for about 2 or 3 minutes even though I can still see my location tracking behind the pop up screen. If I'm streaming music that will continue but I can't change songs or volume or anything. It also lags when I get an incoming call so I can hit the transfer button but it will take about 30 seconds.
I tried to see if my car needed an update from the 08.1 version but can't seem to find any info on it. No actual answer.

Quick question, how does one delete navigation history, i.e., all, on the navi system?

My son loves his new 2015 Prius with navigation, but is annoyed by a feature in navigation. During a trip set, an alert tone precedes whenever the voice instructs to make a turn, followed by a double alert tone. Can these unwanted tones be programmed out?

This is my first posting in this forum, bought my 2008 Prius Tspirit. The GPS navigation is not working, not in car so can't remember the message. The previous owner stated he only used it locally so didnt need gps and said it just need a programmable disc. There is a gps disc in the car, every time i load nothing happens, nothing wrong with cd player as it plays music cds whenever i insert it.
The car has done 47000 mileage and i am based in london, uk. The rear parking works. its not huge issue as i have TomTom but nice to have orius in-built working as well.

2004. There is a Navigation button on the dash as well as on the steering wheel but the navigation does not work. I'm the 3rd owner, the person I bought it from got it 2 years ago and said that the navigation never worked for them.
When I go to navigation I get the current GPS coordinates on the top left, but a blank screen. If I plug in my address it shows a map of the streets around my house and maps my house, but no routing info. It constantly says that I am 600 or so miles from my destination, but the map screen is blank. Does the fact that navigation appears on the screen & steering wheel mean that the car did, at one time, have navigation? Included with the owners manual was a navigation manual and a navigation quick start guide, so I believe it did at one time have navigation.

I have a check engine light on. The code it's throwing out is P0455 which is EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large) My gas cap is on tight so it's not that. I'm not sure if it's my N80 Valve or if something else in the fuel system is wrong. For the record I did replace my fuel pump about 2 weeks before the light came on if that has anything to do with it.

I got a 2012 Prius two weeks ago.
When the map was on the screen, I went down a new section of interstate where the GPS was telling me I was going over grass or turn here from the grass to a city road. How do you update the map or should I continue to use Google maps on my cell phone?
Can you transfer cell phone Google maps to the Prius?

In my Prius 2005 BC, I enjoyed having the turn list posted on the right hand side of the nav screen. I noticed on my 2016 Prius Four ATP that all I saw were freeway exit lists and the occasional upcoming turn screen. I opened my trusty "Navigation System Owner's Manual" to page 199 and read about Map Mode. I see clearly that Option 4 is the turn list, but on my screen only the first 3 options are present. Is there some thing else that needs to be selected to have option 4? BTW: this is a US market vehicle.

My 2010 had a small compass to show north all the time in the upper left corner. When I add the compass on my 2016 it splits the screen which is a real mess.
