Gen 3 Prius (Audio/Electronics) :: 2011 - Amplifier Went Into Protect Mode And Continued
Oct 6, 2015
I have a 2011 non-nav non-JBL Prius, which I got used.
I first noticed this thing after installing an aftermarket head unit, and I could see that various connections behind the head unit plugged into it (including those going to the speaker), but I just left it be. I used a Metra wiring harness to hook up the head unit to the factory wiring. Since then, I installed aftermarket component speakers up front, an Axxess interface to get the steering wheel controls back, and recently an amplifier. I didn't, at that point in time, want to run new wire to all of the speakers, so I ran speaker wire from

I am in the process of installing my JBL-MS8 amplifier.
I am having a hard time finding a source of switched power. I thought I could easily access the cigarette lighter power. When I removed the side access panels, the seat heater vent was in the way.
Any good place to access switched power? Is there an easy way to get to the cigarette lighter power?

When my 2012 Prius II has audio in aux mode, for using the 3.5 mm aux audio jack, a super-loud and annoying buzz is created when I plug my laptop's power supply into the car via a 12V DC to 115V AC power converter plugged into either of the car's 12V aux power jacks.
I'm trying to listen to video lectures on DVD played on my laptop, feeding audio from my laptop to the car (2012 Prius II) using the 3.5 mm aux audio jack. I get clear sound when the laptop is running off battery. However, when I plug a 12V DC to 115V AC power converter into one of the 12V aux power jacks, there is a quiet and slightly annoying buzz.
When I then plug my laptop's power supply into the power converter (whether or not my laptop is connected to its power supply), the buzz's loudness and annoyance get magnified 10-fold, even if nothing is plugged into the aux audio jack. If the Prius audio mode gets switched to USB mode (with no input from the laptop), there is no buzz, so this seems particular to aux mode audio. (I cannot drive the car's audio from a video player on my laptop via USB mode, can I?)
I thought I remember reading a warning about this buzz and someone had a workaround, possibly involving some extra interface, but my searches on this forum aren't turning up anything. I plugged a surge protector into the power converter and got a mid-volume buzz, which went back to a full-volume buzz with the laptop power supply plugged in.

Ok, since I went in for a "free" Oil Change Navigation does not go into nighttime mode (dark colored background). What did they mess up to get me back in there to charge Toyota.

How to get the nav radio into setup mode using the light switch and pushing a button but I cant find it and I don't remember the combo to do.

I have it set to switch automatically, but at night it doesn't darken. I have to go into the map settings and back, then it updates or something and turns on the night mode. Does that use the light sensor, or the time of day?

I am enjoying my new (pre-owned) 2010 Gen III prius and it has been a pleasure so far. My only whine is that the navigation map mode is always in 'North up'' and 2D mode.
In this day and age of the GPS/MAPS world I suppose it wouldnt be too much to ask for a 3D view of the map and default 'driving direction up' mode? Also can the daylight mode be selected even at night or when the headlights are turned ON?

Prius iv with upgraded nav (sunroof package)...after a year and 15k miles, all of a sudden display stays on daylight mode at night. It is blinding! What happened and how can I fix it?

Are there two antenna's in this photo. The regular AM/FM antenna (stick) and the satellite antenna (small disk that is circled).
Is the circled item the satellite antenna or something else?

I've got a 2011 five with the tech package and the satellite signal comes in and out every few seconds. Hiss, music, hiss, music.
It does this until I turn the car off and on. Sometimes it takes more than once.
Changing to FM, AM, USB and back doesn't fix it. Called XM and they reset it 3 times and it didn't fix it.
It's been doing it at least once a week now.

I have a 2011 Prius III without Nav. It has bluetooth pairing, and pairs with the Galaxy Nexus phone (android) to make and receive calls just fine. However, there seems to be no way to play music through the phone? (I currently have an audio cable which I plug into my phone. But for various reasons, this is far from an ideal solution for me.)
I have contacted the Toyota dealership where I bought the Prius and they seem to think this does not work. However, can this really be the case?
(1) Is there something I'm missing in order to play music through bluetooth on my phone?
(2) If there isn't, what are my after-market options for doing so? (I don't need navigation or anything else.)

My JBL head unit keeps dying. My 2011 Prius Three, not III, is currently on its 3rd head unit, and this one is dying also. About once per year, the head unit starts displaying gibberish on the LCD, often with horizontal lines marching upwards. As the problem persists, the display gets worse. Finally, the buttons start malfunctioning. Pressing the power button might eject a CD, pushing a radio preset button might switch to CD, etc.

2011 Aux port only working on left side. Its not the cable. Plug port seams loose and wiggles. Use for Sat Radio hook up.

Within the week the head unit has started to glitch out. Doesn't seem to be any real issues with any usability- at least yet. I have a 2011 Prius II.

Can Display Audio's phone interface accept pauses or waits (P or W) in the phone number? My phone uses them for voicemail passwords, eg dial the number, pause a few seconds, and then dial the password. So far it does not work at all through the bluetooth interface when initiated through voice command ("call xxx xxx xxxx pp yyyy#") or through the car's screen. I tried to directly store a similar number into the Display Audio "stored" numbers but could not find an option for the P pause.

I Learned on a Toyota Avalon web page that you can force your audio system to reboot itself by pressing the power button for three seconds. On the Avalon, it only works on the "Limited" levels. I tried it tonight on my Prius Four and it worked. Great to use when your audio gets "confused" and you just want to clear it and start over.

I've been using MP3 CDs in autos for some years. Now I have a 2014 Prius 4 with whatever audio system is standard in that model. Generally all is good. But there is one odd thing: Whenever I stop the car, or it seems even pause the playback, it seems to restart so as to replay a few minutes I listened to on the last session.

Just got my 06 Prius. The screen shows that Audio Off. The radio doesn't want to turn on. What could be the issue. 06 Prius with nav, Bluetooth, JBL etc. Everything else seem to work except the radio. Fuse perhaps?

I presently use a 16GB USB drive that has about 240 MB of 2 to 10 MB mp3 files and it works well. The reason I ask is that SirisXM is going to drop my favorite channel (69) and I was thinking of making some large files of audio capture before it goes away. Large because its easier to make and play a few than many. There might be a file size limitation (not USB storage limitation) due to the amount of memory in the audio system.

Sometimes in the bright sunlight, I cannot see the audio display or the small AC display that shows which vents the air is coming out from. Is there any way to illuminate these displays? Will some LEDs around them work or make it worse? I'm driving a C two. I have no intention of upgrading to an aftermarket sound system; I just want a simple inexpensive way to see the info on the screen.
