Gen 2 Prius :: High MPG With Wheel Covers Removed
Jun 4, 2012
I have removed the 15" wheel covers from my 2012 Prius since they interfered with accessing both the lug nuts and the tire stem (what a stupid, cheap wheel cover design), and replaced them with 2.5" center caps to protect the axle threads from corrosion. Although I didn't rigorously compare mpg before and after removing the wheel covers, on a recent out-and-back trip with the new center caps installed, the Prius averaged 56.5 mpg on a hilly, 240 mile course, at a speed of 66 mph (dry road, not very windy, air temp about 75F, cruise control employed, no hypermiling techniques). I was quite pleasantly surprised at the high mpg (even better than I typically get with my 07 Prius on that same trip), and can't imagine that the mpg could be much better with the wheel covers on.

I always thought the wheel covers on my 2012 Prius IV were dorky but wasn't willing to spend to upgrade them. Then I got a flat tire, and you have to remove the wheel cover to take the wheel off. Wow, the naked wheel looks GREAT! Blackout metal with nice spokes. I had seen Prii with similar setups on the road and had assumed they were a customization or an upgrade.
The only problem is the lack of a center cap, which is really only apparent when looking at the wheel straight in from the center, which hardly done. So I pulled all four wheel covers off and stored them. Have others who have done this seen any negative consequences? Especially to not having a center cap?

Have the 06+ 5-star wheels and hear the wheel covers rattling when the top is down? How to correct?

I've had my Blizzard Pearl 2016 for about 5 weeks and about 2500 miles. Today I took it through the automatic carwash and while I was wiping it off afterwards I found I couldn't get the headlight covers completely clean. It looked like there was a drop of moisture on the inside and also the beginnings of the micro-scratches/haze I had on the inside of my 2010 Prius after 5 years or so.

Yesterday I want under my 2011 for the first time . Successfully installed an engine block heater ! when I was under there I noticed an opening in the plastic that covers bottom of the motor compartment It was under what looks like the transmission on the driver side of the car . I was working through the access door to the oil filter of course. Is there supposed to be two doors under the car and one just is not been replaced ?

The engine under cover had the oil door removed before I bought the car. Purchased used in 2012 (CPO). The cover hangs down in the middle now. The car was already past the mileage for the engine under cover TSB.

I've removed 3 bolts ( Headlight assembly removal)and loosened the number cover to be gridlocked by something I cannot see or just a bit more friction than the amount of force I'm willing to give for fear of breaking something.

How to remove the light lens that covers the headliner mounted door lamps? The one that covers the 3 lights with the 2 side switches in the top center. I bought LED's for the lamps but can't see how to remove it without butchering it up.

On Monday evening my wife left our 2010 Prius Gen III without pressing the "off" button. She took the keys with her and she claims that she locked the car.
On Wednesday morning I noticed that the dashboard panel was switched on and I deduced that the Prius has been running all the time, with the ICE engine kicking in now and then to keep up the Hybrid battery level. A quick call to my dealer confirmed this, and also the fuel consumption average was in line: 14 l/100 km on a 20 Km trip (my average is 3.9 -4.2 l/100km...).
I was very surprised to discover that the Prius does not switches off when the key is removed (i.e. taken far away from the car). This seems to me a sort of engineering flaw.

My 05 will pass the 230K mile mark sometime in the next week. I have been tolerating a high velocity (65+mph ) vibration [for about the past six months - maybe more] that I can feel through the steering wheel. When driving at 55 mph, there's no vibration whatsoever.
It could be that the Ecopia 422s that were installed two years ago are causing it or it could be a bad front wheel bearing. The Ecopias have 45k miles on them and realistically don't have much more life left in them (60K tread wear warranty). A couple of them are a little more than 1/32 from the wear bars.
To those who replaced their front wheel bearing(s). What were the symptoms up to the time of replacement? Was it something you could sense when driving or was it found during an inspection with the front end raised?

I installed seat covers which required removing my entire rear bench cushion. Now I can't get it to snap back into place. It's the 2 inserts beneath and in front of where each passenger's crotch would be that are causing the trouble.
To release said snaps, I had to pull up with a lot of force, so I figured to snap them back in, I could just slam my knee down right above but no dice -and I made full use of my 163 lbs and gravity multiple times.

I finally installed fog lights this past weekend.Mine is a Kentucky made Camry, so no covers for the fog lights. I had to cut them out, and I do not believe that no matter how careeful you cut the light holes it will ever look good as good as a factory bumber ready for fog lights. I was ready for the imperfection Especially considering that my dealer asked for around 1600 dollars to install fog lights.
make sure you clean and sandpaper the inside of the bumper really well. It held the brackets so strongly I was surprised. Electrical was a breeze .. I used an existing grommet thingie to slip the single cable in, but I am not happy with that. It is going through the side of the grommet and it might/will let egine gasses into the passenger compartment for sure. I will most probably get the original turn stalk and the relay and use the original wiring afterwards. Right now I used the wiring that came with the kit.

The fabric has been falling off most of the interior pieces, so I figured I'd start with trying to reglue the fabric on the A-Pillars. I searched the topic & found threads that said to remove the airbag emblem by prying gently, then remove a screw behind that. So I gently remove the emblem & find I have snapped off the 2 posts holding it in place, & there is no screw behind the emblem. What is the removal procedure?

I took my car in for its first detail (while mine, that is). How to keep the front vent covers open with the car off, for purposes of cleaning the vent directional slats. The best I could figure out in a hurry was, with the key in accessory or the engine on, to switch climate to manual (direct air) to open the covers, set the fan to lowest speed (one light segment above off,) and position the vent switches to furthest left light illuminated (again, one position above off.) Is there any way to keep the covers open with the car, or at least the HVAC fan, off?

How to remove the plastic engine cover that covers the engine? I'm know some of them are just held in place with friction plugs and only require a good tug, but I've thought that about other things in the past which have resulted in expensive noises.

I have a 2000 Intrigue 3.5L 155,000 Mi ... Oil use has been about 1 QT at 3000 miles since 120,000 miles. Before that I wasn't keeping track.
The valve covers were leaking pretty bad and could be smelled burning off. I replaced them along with my P/S pump. There also was fluid in the engine valley that I believe was P/S Fluid..
I changed the oil and I was 1.5 Qt low at 2,000 miles. So it is suddenly WORSE. Even though I replaced the leaking valve covers. There is also currently not fluid in the engine valley. I park in the same place every night and do not notice a puddle. Also there is no noticeable blue smoke from the exhaust. Just a little white as it is winter.
I am looking for where else the oil could be going that it doesn't leave a puddle on the ground.

The bumper cover on my car was replaced due to deer damage. I just noticed the headlight washer covers don't retract themselves all the way unless I give them a little push by hand. Can this issue be fixed?

Every once in a while one of the headlamp washer covers will be open when I park the car. When that happens I just push it back into place, but it would seem that there should be some sort of auto-retract spring or something to keep it from gravity opening. Is there a spring that might be missing on mine?
